About Velotric...

I need to bleed my brakes. Should be simple right? Except the brakes on my fold 1 plus don't appear to have a relief valve as far as I can tell. So I head to their website to look for instructions or any useful information.
Spoiler: there is none.
You might find some articles that appear to be well-meaning good advice, but it is merely surficial knowledge, lacking any depth to be actually useful. It's all high-level AI slop missing critical details.
What's even worse is the obvious SEO manipulation. Worse yet, some articles have absurdly incorrect information.
These aren't casual mistakes. They are complete ignorance.
Take for example this article (until they take it down):
https://www.velotricbike.com/blogs/story-landing/mechanical-vs-hydraulic-disc-brakes
It may seem legit at first.
You may start to notice what I'm talking about, around the second, third or fourth time they regurgitate the same bland information, worded slightly different. That's called SEO manipulation.
In that article, take special note of the exploded view diagrams for the mechanical and hydraulic brakes. Don't merely glance at them, read the labels and look at what the labels point to.
The longer you look at them, the worse they get.
This is not an isolated problem. The more time I've spent trying to fix issues that have come up with my bike, the less I ever want anything to do with the company that made it.
Even requesting support is a major pain, requiring you to take pictures and/or video of your problem before you can even submit the problem. There's a way around if you dig around their help center long enough. Still, that's not the way to do support. I've read many posts and comments here about their support and how it is lacking, if not at times openly hostile to customers.
What the company actually offers: a low cost ebike with impressive stats combined with atrocious support, excessive online shilling and manipulation, misinformation about basic ebike maintenance, non-standard parts (i know, there's no standards but I should be able to find a relief valve or instructions on how to bleed their brakes or easily find a hanger replacement for the derailleur) that might fall apart within the first 1-2k miles of use, a few nice parts mounted with cheap plastic (i.e. the taillight) which breaks, sending the part directly into the drivetrain because it was wired on the inside of the mudguard, I could go on.
It's my first ebike. I love riding it. It's fast enough for me (avg is 20mph, top speed ever is 43mph), is comfortable to ride, can make it up the hill I live on (2k feet at average 4.2% grade, with a ~8% driveway that's always wet) and has other neat features but all those positives go right out the window when I'm stuck trying to find compatible replacements or trying to DIY anything or riding in city traffic and having a mudguard mounting tab snap.
Even the folding, the main reason I got the bike, is not done badly but the bike weight and awkwardness of it all, makes it useless for getting it up my apartment stairs. The folding ability is only useful when something breaks and I have to have someone pick me up who has a vehicle it will fit in. Like when the key needed to change batteries, broke, (like it was made of pewter /s), incapable of withstanding the pull required to remove the battery, which wont come out without turning the key while pulling it firmly.
Frustratingly enjoyable. I love it but I hate it.
End rant. Thanks for reading. I hope you have a nice day.

AI, probably ChatGPT, wrote this post. Parts of it, at least.
Botched_Euthanasia@reddit (OP)
Naw, 100% human written. typed technically. i don't need assistance to write and i don't even use spellcheck, haven't for years. What makes you think I'm AI? Do I need to send a blood sample to prove i'm flesh and blood or will a dick pic suffice?
UsernameTaken1701@reddit
All the one sentence paragraphs in the first part. Especially this one:
“That’s not A. That’s B” is a classic writing pattern in chatgpt text.
Don’t know why you’re bringing up DNA samples and dck pics. I didn’t say you are an AI.
Botched_Euthanasia@reddit (OP)
I mean, if not for the caveat in the last sentence, that's pretty much exactly what you said.
if you can't figure out why i brought up dna and dick pics, then i can't help but want to question if your comment reply was written by ai, but since this is reddit, i probably should have appended the /s sarcasm tag in the case of neurodivergency. i normally would investigate further by looking at a user profile but yours is private.
as for the A/B pattern, that happens to be a classic writing technique used to produce an emphasizing effect. lots of humans still do it.
it's almost as if ai was trained on human writing... human writing that is still public at least. /s
i wonder if this means that by keeping my profile public, while more and more other people go private, ai will start to sound more like me over time. what a nightmare that would be...

> I mean, if not for the caveat in the last sentence, that's pretty much exactly what you said.
I guess "an ai logged into their Reddit account, navigated to this sub, and wrote a post" is one (incorrect, but valid) way to interpret that. Another (correct, and equally valid) way to interpret it is "a human logged into their Reddit account, navigated to this sub, and pasted in the text they prompted an ai to create".
> as for the A/B pattern, that happens to be a classic writing technique used to produce an emphasizing effect. lots of humans still do it.
Well, not only do lots of humans still appear to do it, there's been a huge jump in the last couple of years. I wonder why that is?

That is an unsourced bar graph that doesn't really say much. What large company's were included? Which documents count, like is it just tax filings or does it include text messages and emails of employees? Is the increase at the right caused by people using AI or is it because the surveillance state has grown exponentially and can read more communications now?
Probably a combination of the two I'd guess.

Source is this Barron’s article. But I’m losing interest in this discussion and it’s clear that being right is very important to you, so okay.

Thanks for wrongfully accusing me of something, then trying to make it seem like I'm the one with the problem, when you're the one who made a mistake.
I choose my words very carefully, so yeah, it's important to me to be right when I'm being accused of using a slop generator. Have a nice day.

Well, the truth is, more people are going to be exposed to chatgpt's (et al) writing than to your writing, so as long as your writing reads like chatgpt's, there's a chance people are going to think you used chatgpt. Unfair, but you might need to get used to it.

and if you call um thery wont know what youre talking about. Id check for a nearby dealer or a shop that will bleed/repair the brakes..but you should be able to tell them the brand/model..

From another comment I made on this post:
Krostovitch@reddit
I want to help you, firstly take a second to ask if any of the issues you are having could possibly be a result of a blind spot in your knowledge.
Take those and write them down, take some time to look into them.
Then take unresolved issues and bring them to a local bike shop.
Bring the objective issues to them and get their opinion before launching into any of what you have seen so far.
You might be surprised at what answers they have for you.
I can tell you that there is no "relief Valve" on any bicycle brake system from Shimano to Hope.
The Brakes that come stock on the Velotric Fold 1 and Fold 1 Plus are sus at best: they seem to be Clarks or Logan (known to fail). However, I have serviced literally hundreds of these at my shop and not actually seen them fail on this model. That doesn't mean yours don't need work, just that it is statistical outlier by my reckoning.
Have the bike shop make the case for you to Velotric, they can provide impartial objective quality evidence to the Velotric Support team. I can say that Velotric are hit and miss at times, but a good jargon filled letter from myself usually sets them straight...
Cheers

so far velotric has not responded but i will try again as i only messaged them once about the brakes. they were responsive when i messaged them about the battery and were helpful then. i did not get a response when i asked them about the derailleur.
i've taken the bike to every local bike shop within my range, except the one i bought it from because they were clased the day i went. they are also the farthest from me and almost exactly the distance a full charge of a battery gives me. the other shops have been less than helpful.
one i went to when i had a flat and they sold me an innertube that isn't even close to what i needed (i have 20x3 inch tires, it was a 27 inch tube)
another shop, the owner seemed to get offended that i brought my bike there, since it was not a brand he sold.
the last store was actually very helpful, but also very swamped. it's that time of year. last time i went was a week ago and they said they were backed up at least a month. they also said they couldn't help me with the bleeding because they don't carry the brand. they got me the right brake pads at least, plus they've been helpful before with other stuff. i'll try to get to them again.
as i understand it, i just need to get air out of the brake line. i have a kit for that and it has a connector that fits to the opening by the levers, i just don't know where to inject mineral oil. i tried following this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsqlEYJeLQU
and also other videos. they usually have a release (relief? drain?) valve by the caliper that seems to just pop open but mine don't have that. they have a hex bolt maybe but it is on so tight i don't think it is it. the rest of the bolts connect it to the frame as far as i can tell.
thanks for the tips.
OutboardTips@reddit
Look at brakes, take name off brakes, watch you tube video on how to bleed those ones.
Botched_Euthanasia@reddit (OP)
There is nothing on the brakes that say brand, model number, nothing, other than 'mineral oil' and a warning about not turning two bolts in particular. I've watched a dozen videos but they all look different than my brakes and all had relieve valves.

love my fold 1 plus so far. unfortunate to hear their lack of support. my LBS recommended it and i’m banking on them for maintenance and any other issues. i hate the battery removal, i bent the key early on. i rarely fold it too
