Anyone else returning to church now that you’re in your 50s after a long period of not attending?
ThisusernameThen@reddit
Their starfish album was good. Wouldnt return to their back.catalogue tho.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
No. but I also don't have any issues with people that choose to do so.
Paint-by-numberrs@reddit
That's a resounding no.
big65@reddit
No, organized religion is do much more corrupt now than the 80's when I left that the only way I will ever consider going is in chains.
moneyman74@reddit
Imagine asking this on Reddit! lol
ServiceKooky1323@reddit (OP)
What does this even mean?
moneyman74@reddit
In general people on Reddit have an extremely negative view of religion. This thread is about what I imagined 90/10 no.
bkward@reddit
You know, I've been thinking about it. Mainly because I need new friends, but I am far from going. I still haven't fully processed my feelings about church as a kid. I haven't been inside a church in 35 years
Fit-Narwhal-3989@reddit
Nope.
FLT_GenXer@reddit
No, not even a little tempted.
While I do enjoy reading about religions and belief systems, I have no desire to be a part of one again.
I am confident that they cannot answer the questions I have.
AiringOGrievances@reddit
Learning about the history of religions and religious beliefs is a great inoculation against being religious.
Jew-zilla@reddit
I’m Jewish, always have been. Raised that way and have zero interest in converting to a different faith. I agree with your statement. I don’t like to use the word “religious”. I prefer the word “observant”. As I started to learn more about the history of Judaism, and the Abrahamic faiths in general, I have become less observant. I don’t eat pork or shellfish, and I keep the high holidays, but I don’t go to services every week. There’s no one right way to be Jewish. There’s even the concept of both secular Jews and agnostic Jews. I find myself leaning toward the latter.
Havacookiewhydontcha@reddit
Yes! The history of all of the cultures, religious beliefs and politics of the ancient world is super fascinating to learn about. None of that history bears any resemblance to “going to church.”
science_nerdd@reddit
💯 how I feel too
EntrancePotential595@reddit
Nope.
oldirishfart@reddit
No. They tried to brainwash me, but my mind was too strong for them. Proudly atheistic since 12 years old.
QueenMumof4@reddit
Take it from someone who was in church until about 5 years ago...enjoy your time outside, meet friends for coffee on Sundays, keep your whole paycheck and do real good for real people, spread peace and love. That will give you much more than a church ever will
No-Property1871@reddit
This… absolutely!!! 💯 I live to help people but I don’t need to do it visibly, or in public, or because someone said I should. Church seems to be bursting at the seems with hypocrites and those who want to judge so many for social issues but never look at their own lives. And of course, the money…..
CalOkie6250@reddit
LeadingResearch9528@reddit
Hard no here. Never went, and never will.
MuddyPig168@reddit
Nope. My parents tried to raise me as a Jehovah’s Witness. When I legally could make my own choices, I left and never looked back.
I don’t begrudge anyone else for their choices but I can’t go back
heruskael@reddit
I've heard it's gotten real weird since I left them in the 90s.
MuddyPig168@reddit
That’s what I’ve heard as well. I was out in the early 90s
tanhauser_gates_@reddit
Nope. Refused to do catholic confirmation as my first adult act even before I turned 18.
I am not going back later in life.
SBInCB@reddit
Nope.
LayerNo3634@reddit
Never quit. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the light. My best friends are church friends I've known more than 20 years. Daughter moved and started attending a new church. They have welcomed her with open arms. They even hosted a baby shower for her, even though she is new. Any church we have visited while traveling has always been very welcoming.
TheJokersChild@reddit
I'm spoiled for any other churches after my last one. Pastor was openly Gen-X and peppered his services with '80s references and stories about his growing up in the '70s and '80s. Can't really do a traditional church after that one.

I attend UU services since they align with my way of thinking and it's about as nondenominational and unchurchlike that a church can be. Regular Abrahamic services? Fuck no. In general I find most churches to be badly out of touch at best and dishonest to a large degree.
Character-Salary634@reddit
Nope, not gonna do it...
However, I have come to appreciate the traditional values and "rules" of life a lot more as I get older. I think the restrictions and shame we put on ourselves led to the prosperity and stability of America and we are in the process of losing a lot of that ground as America "loses its religion" and is culturally watered down more and more with non-Christian immigrants People used to hold each other to higher standards and (a healthy) shame was a part of that structure. We also shared a lot of the same morals. Now... "Morals" is a dirty word and everybody has permission to do whatever they want - in the street if they want to. And now You are the weirdo for calling out disgusting behavior...

I don't understand your last sentence. What is the disgusting behavior that people who call it out are called weirdos? Dare I say they are being shamed. Shame all the way down.

Nope. If anything I’m staying further away from religion given how crazy these nutters have become in recent years. To me all religions sound stupid.
Primary_Company_3813@reddit
I attended church in my 20s when I was newly married. Walked away after divorce. I have thought about returning, but I'm a different person and it no longer has meaning for me. So, it's a nope.
notabadkid92@reddit

Adventurous_Bad_4011@reddit
I think about going every once in a while. More for the community than then religious aspects. I find that many of my views and mores have basis in the church I grew up in. The episcopal church is two blocks away . I pass it all the time. Maybe I go this Sunday and see it it aligns with how I feel.
Muted_Evidence1311@reddit
This would be motivation too. The community. One thing I truly miss about my younger years. Being able to rock up at my local milk bar for a chocolate bar and hanging out for a chat with the shop keeper and customers.
Adventurous_Bad_4011@reddit

SausageSmuggler21@reddit
I left the church during high school. Now I'm too old and they won't let me back.
omibus@reddit
I left church in my 50s. Lots of reasons. One part was never really fitting in no matter where I went. Not just me, my entire family. We just could not connect with people, most people found us weird or strange. We did home groups, Bible studies, kids were in youth groups, I served on boards, played music, etc.
Telling sign was that everyone we did connect with…left.
Last straw was me getting Long Covid. I get seizures a lot now, and I have a tic disorder. I can’t handle crowds and loud music anymore. And the response from other people was “didn’t you pray about it?” Which is insulting.
So now I’m primarily in a wheelchair, people barely talk to me anyway, and the ones that do talk to have a permanent pained look on their faces. Which is understandable the first time, but annoying on the 50th.
So we stopped going, and they quickly stopped asking about us.
Grafakos@reddit
Nope, but in early retirement I've taken a few physics classes at the local university. That's as closed to religion as I'm willing to get, and even then I'm skeptical of string theory and severely doubt that we have the full picture for quantum mechanics either.
C43CE@reddit
Hell no. I’m not quite 50 but I grew up Mormon and went to a few EV Christian services later on and fuck all that shit.
But my wife is Christian and it’s not a source of friction. Nobody cares.
PerpetualRestart@reddit
I have a brain and use it consistently, so no. Religion is a scam.

PeriwinkleWonder@reddit
Oh hell no. I'm a recovering catholic who hasn't been to church since I turned 18. I stopped believing probably when I was 7 or 8 years old. But I had to do 12 years of catholic school BS.
Wen-Mal68@reddit
Yes. I thought after leaving for close to a decade I would never return. But a friend of mine invited my wife to a church she and her husband and my wife and I left 25 years ago. My wife enjoyed it. I asked if her husband was going and he asked if I was going to come. We both returned because we missed the friendship and the people who had pushed us to leaving have all either left or most have died. Glad to be back. Bible says we are supposed to assemble with like minded believers. Church isn’t a necessity, you can assemble otherwise, but it feels great to be back in the house of the LORD and the building my wife and I were married in.
GumRunner0@reddit
No, and a fuck No at that, I'm an adult, and I am not scared of death, we will all experience it . Religion is control and is pure filth
Whole-Ad-6893@reddit
Nope. Organized religion is for suckers.
Logical-Mirror5036@reddit
I quit going to church the instant my parents stopped making me go. I may have arranged to have a job that "conveniently" needed me on Sunday mornings though. I'll occasionally go to a mass if it's high church for the beauty of the ritual, but it's rare. Once every couple of years?

PurpleTangerine78@reddit
No. I stopped going after my kids went to college. I felt it was my duty to expose them to it, as my Mom did for me, but when it was just me, I stopped going. It’s been my experience that you can’t “just” go to church services for refuge anymore, without people trying to press you into service on committees, fundraisers, Sunday school, etc. That’s not my bag anymore.
Astronaut6735@reddit
I left in my late 20s, never to return.
butterflygardyn@reddit

canuckEnoch@reddit
Hell, no.
I wasted too much time in church as a kid before I developed critical thinking skills. Why waste more time there now as the clock ticks further from morning and on towards nightfall?
SteveLivingroomCO@reddit
The more I learn about Christianity, and all modern religions, the more I realize they are dangerous control mechanisms that do more harm than good.
There are good pastors out there, but religions are gross.
oldirishfart@reddit

No-Property1871@reddit

Western religions have been nothing but detrimental to human society. Nothing but division, hate and worse. Which, really is sad, if one were to actually follow the teachings. I've gotten more 'spiritual' as I've aged, but also exponentially more against organized western religions.

I did a year ago. Not so much for the literal religious context part of it, but more for the community. The church I joined has amazing outreach programs and volunteer opportunities. No, and won’t. For me only, it serves no purpose. I was brought up in church, taught to treat people well and take care of others. I do that to this day. Taught my kids this. We give back and do good deeds. I don’t need to give my time and money to a church to tell me to do the things I already do. But that’s only my feelings.
I also have an issue getting past the self serving hypocrisy of a church. I don’t look down on anyone who goes to church and makes it part of their lives, but I have separated faith from religion and am much happier for it.

I don’t think I can do funerals at this point. Not even my own father and mother. We show up to the reception (most of the time) and give a gift. I have zero plans to step foot in a Mormon church between now and my death.
