Way back in the day, there was a version of a “saturday night special” law, a law meant to ban ultra affordable firearms.
Some people argued thst cheap guns were only good for criminals to use as throw aways. (Classist gun grabber bullshit, but moving on)
Part of the scheme was to ban imported guns based on a number of factors, and minimum WEIGHT was one of them.
Weight, because while pricier pistols were made of steel, cheap pistols were often made with zinc alloys. These pistols would be lighter, and so a weight test was a way to ban them.
(Note: when you hear of “melt law” states, same concept. Zinc melts at a lower point than steel so some states ban pistols that deform at a center temp)
End result, because the PPK was so small, it got caught below the weigbt limit and was illegal to import.
Walther got around this by releasing the PPK/S
The PPK/S is basically a PPK slide, with a PP lower reciever. (The PP or Police Pistol is basically the standard, full duty sized gun the PPK was based on).
A lot of purists (me included) dislike the PPK/S because its

Barring the Bond memes, the first handgun I EVER fired was a West German Walther PP (import ban banned smaller models such as this one).
Shot it with my grandfather who was a GIANT James Bond fan, and it’s one of the first things that got me into guns. Good vibes man.
