Front end swap
Posted by captian_car_guy@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 71 comments
I have a 92 camaro rs v6 5 speed manual. I'm looking to swap the front end to first gen from the fenders forward. I can stick weld and gas weld. I'd prefer it to be all metal and look like the attached picture. Anything anybody knows about these two cars that would make the swap easier would be greatly appreciated.
daxxo@reddit
That is so AI, I mean those tyres, never seen AFOOR OOOOO, Gemini logo bottom right and your jack is escaping underground because it's ashamed of that fucking stupid long frontend hood thing.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Dude, everyone knows it's ai, they also know it's just a cheap look at what could be should I decide to do the front end swap. It exists souly to get a general idea. I think you might have misunderstood that part
DaWayItWorks@reddit
Thought the first pic was a BMW front clip at first. You should do that instead. Go for broke or don't go at all
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
I've never been to big into bmw's. Don't get me wrong they are cool cars but I'm more of a late 60s early 70s muscle fan
DaWayItWorks@reddit
Me either lol just tryna be funny
largos7289@reddit
what in the unholy hell are you doing?!?! Besides it can never be done like the picture.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Course not, the picture is ai. It's just a low effort render to give the idea of what could be
Thirsty_Comment88@reddit
That first picture is cursed
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Ai is shit but imma do it anyway

He needs to stop doing that with the camaros face

Imma do it all over the Camaros face
anonymouslosername@reddit
I mean...it could be worse ...
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Admittedly, I am an idiot but this hurt to look at
anonymouslosername@reddit
đ that was kind of the idea
Mike_9128@reddit
Thatâs what I was thinking lol
segelflugzeugdriver@reddit
I'm guessing you're 17 and have big dreams which is cool and all but yeah.... Let's get a grip here. Have fun with what you have, put a v8 in it and go from there.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
20 actually. I got automotive certifications and 5 years in a restoration shop. This is nothing new to me I just wanted to see if anybody else has done it so I don't have to plan from scratch
texan01@reddit
That front overhang is out of proportion to the bluff front end.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Ai is unfortunately limited, I don't intend for it to hang that far in real life
zeed88@reddit
That wonât be easy, with stick weld will make it harder, body isnât aligned similarly to both and you need to merge them together seamlessly, the metal will warp and shift and expand and shrink and you will end up with your wight in bondo, but it is doable
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Alot of bending and wire or gas welding
PSYKO_Inc@reddit
Don't.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Do

You'd have to remove the crash bar and cut off the frame horns that hold it. Then you'd have to figure out how to attach the lights and the grille because the stock 3rd gen lights attach to the fenders via a plastic/fiberglass bar under the bumper cover. I don't know how the 1st gen camaro mounts it's lights but I'd assume they bolt to the rad support bulkhead, which is very inset to the 3rd gen hood.
I did a similar thing with my 3rd gen and a mazda front end. I kept half the crash bar and half the bumper cover and bolted the lights to the rad support it's very inset
Attaching the lights and grille would be easy, but the hood will be too long and the front end would be near impossible to fit unless you're doing something scratch built. You'd have to be good at bending sheet metal.
And an arc welder won't help you at all in this project. I'd get a wire welder if you decide to try this.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Thanks, I did end up deciding on wire welder, my intended plan is in the updated text
RustBeltLab@reddit
Dude, step away from the welder.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
Nah
zeed88@reddit
Its AI
Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot@reddit
Yep, they swapped those "Radial" wheels for nonsense.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
The coopers were dry rotted and I needed the car drivable so I went with what was in stock at the local shop

Gemini, specifically.

shogun100100@reddit
Feels like the 3 bar light ones would suit the body better than the round ones
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
I have the same opinion but AI is limited. I'm going to do a scech to get a better idea
CamelotWarrior@reddit
Man, I thought this was a picture of your work. DANG it looks good. Man, if you have the patience and know-how, friggin send it, man. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't or shouldn't. The worst that can happen is you gain experience and possibly ruin a car. Cut, weld, fiberglass and bondo to get your concept. Your next attempt will be better and you could make some good money at it. My fingers are crossed that you nail this project.
captian_car_guy@reddit (OP)
UPDATE I'll probably buy some new 1st gen fenders to not ruin perfectly good factory fenders. Cut the front half off the 1st gen fenders bend and weld them at the front of the existing fender. Go from the hood forward maybe buy the (Harwood Fiberglass Bolt-On Hoods for 1982-1992 CAMARO - HWHD-12104B. HRD-B-12104) and call it a day after paint rather than tearing into the actual fender. I've got experience stick welding and gas welding. 5 years in a resto shop and some certifications. It'll be pricey but I have a plan now.
Juicy-Meat-69@reddit
If a car had a mullet. This is what it would be.
Heavy-Focus-1964@reddit
why from the fenders forward? the body lines are not even a little bit similar. how are you planning to blend a round 60s fender into a square 80s door? youâd have to adapt the hood too and hope the front wheel would land in the same place.
in your mockup it looks a lot more like itâs all 3rd gen right up to the grille and bumper. if you really do this, that would probably be your best bet. remove the front end of the 3G and figure out a way to make the 1G front end sit in its place and blend into the 3G body lines. a fiberglass build from scratch might get it done
DrEnd585@reddit
The 60s fenders arent THAT round in person admittedly, you COULD blend it with enough panel work
Heavy-Focus-1964@reddit
i don't know. they look similar if you cross your eyes, but with body panels it just takes 1/4" to look weird. the 1st gen's wheelbase is a full 7" longer, and the front wheelwell looks to sit at a healthy few inches forward from the doorline compared to the 3rd gen. i don't know how you'd adapt a fender for that.
where there's a will there's a way, especially with unlimited resources. but it's not an ideal first bodywork project, i can say that much
-RB26-@reddit
Idk what anyone else thinks, I really like this. Iâve always had a thing for those old mustang looking Aston Martinâs, and this is just as cool. Given you put some led tail lights or something on it
HeadOfMax@reddit
Do it and post when it's done.
Mercuralis@reddit
None of the first gen parts you want align with or swap with the third gen chassis. It would have to be entirely custom. The catch is that if you have all those components in front of you, youâre better equipped to answer your own question than anyone on the internet. Youâre essentially forging your own path here.

pooo_pourri@reddit
Yeah dude youâre probably going to need to fabricate your own front end to make it line up. Thereâs no way the dimensions on a first gen front end will magically line up on a third gen

I seem to recall watching a youtube series on this very subject from one of the Saturday morning power block guys

I thought this was already swapped with e30 from this angle lol

I could see that
Madder_Than_Diogenes@reddit
I don't know why you'd bother. The 70s and 80s Camaros look better than the 60s ones (perhaps an unpopular opinion).

I couldn't tell what the hell I was looking at when I first looked

Better option would be making a tubular chassis for the front and make a custom flip hood.
rwhart@reddit
A 2nd Gen front swap might⌠might be better.
juwyro@reddit
Nothing easy about this.
