When did microwave popcorn stop being terrible?

I remember back in the 80s and 90s, microwave popcorn was pretty much inedible. Anyone else remember that? It was coated in a synthetic, vaguely-butter-tasting industrial byproduct. Disgusting. My mom used to buy it, and my parents and sister would eat it, but I wouldn't touch it. For me, it was air-popped or nothing.
I became an air-popping popcorn maestro pretty fast as a child, because I was the only one in the household who'd take the time to make a proper bowl of popcorn. I can still make the most perfectly-seasoned air-popped popcorn you'll ever have.
And I spent most of the past few decades avoiding microwave popcorn, because of how awful I remember it being. But I tried some recently, and... it was pretty good. Not coated in biohazardous butter-flavored sludge. Just quite reasonably lightly oiled and salted. Not quite as good as air-popped, but not too far off. Certainly doesn't feel or taste synthetic in any way.
Was there some major shift in microwave popcorn technology that I missed? Because I'm kind of flabbergasted by this.

I remember us switching from an air popper to microwave early/mid 90s
Blue_Star_Child@reddit
We switched to an air popper years ago. All the microwave popcorn now is oily and tastes like chemicals. I wish I could get movie popcorn whenever I wanted.
Senior-Drawing-4304@reddit
I also switched to an air popper but wish I could find a good microwave popcorn that was filled with bad ingredients

AMC extreme butter is the best I’ve found.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Yeah, about that:
Popcorn Lung
More reading
impliedapathy@reddit
The reason popcorn lung is so rare is because it takes high level, acute exposure to diacetyl (which gives that signature buttery aroma). There’s only 1 known case of popcorn lung from consumer products and the dude that got it inhaled fumes from 2 bags a day for nearly 10 years. Fear mongering helps no one.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
No one uses diacetyl anymore anyways.
impliedapathy@reddit
Right. They removed it from all major brands somewhere around the mid 2000s I think
OppositeRun6503@reddit
Mid 2000s hasn't happened yet as we've still got 24 years to go until 2050.
impliedapathy@reddit
Don’t be that guy. You know exactly what I meant. Pedants are insufferable. Fine. Mid aughts.
Exciting-Argument-67@reddit
Get you an Orville Redenbacher popcorn maker. I thought it was the dumbest, biggest waste of space when my husband brought one home.
It's grand. We use it all the time. Much better than microwave popcorn.
HappyKadaver666@reddit
Hmm my experience is opposite - I used to love microwave popcorn and now I think it tastes like chemical trash. I figured it wasn’t the popcorn that’s charged, it’s me. A lot of food seems to be getting shittier these days - probably to accommodate rising prices. I highly doubt microwave popcorn is better now - but glad you’re getting the chance to experience something tasty regardless.
Farty_mcSmarty@reddit
Unrelated to your question but I remember around 2003, having some microwave popcorn that was called “corn on the cob” popcorn and I stg it was the best microwaved popcorn I ever tasted.
I don’t think it’s made anymore but I can eat the shit out of some actual corn on the cob
I’ve always wanted to get into making my own air popped popcorn but it felt like such an overwhelming endeavor to get the proper machine and ingredients. One of these days I’ll revisit it
EliteJoz@reddit
Is it just me or was Rainbow Pop actually really freaking delicious and we've just been missing that for decades?
delldarlin@reddit
I've long since gone back to making it on the stovetop like my mom did. Pan, fat, kernels, lid, heat, pop pop pop, don't let it burn, season as you please, yum.
thehakujin82@reddit
Air popper, olive oil, salt.
delldarlin@reddit
Air popper not found. [A]bort, [R]etry, [F]ail?
thehakujin82@reddit
Oh, it’s in the pantry on the floor, behind the plastic pitcher in which we used to make the orange juice (from concentrate).
seriouslysocks@reddit
I bought orange juice concentrate a few weeks ago.
Probably won’t make it, but I’ll pull it from the back of my freezer ten years from now and feel all nostalgic.
BillyBattsInTrunk@reddit
Same! I used a mixture of coconut oil and ghee. Mwah!
Milkweedhugger@reddit
I used to love making popcorn this way. Good quality kernels, coconut oil, a sprinkle of sugar and salt…. Until about six months ago when I cracked a molar on a half popped kernel. Getting old sucks.
YcemeteryTreeY@reddit
I stopped with the microwave popcorn when I found out how toxic the popping bags themselves were. They can give you alzheimers because of the heavy metals? No thank you
Blue_Star_Child@reddit
So my husband used to work for Weaver Popcorn. If you've never heard of them them that's ok. They do have thier own line of microwave popcorn but they also produce Popsecrect microwave popcorn there too. Indiana is the world's producer of popcorn. We have Orville Redenbacher too.
Anyway, Weaver is a massive producer. My husband told me if the packaged popcorn comes through the machines with a defective like no exp date or not sealed correctly or not oil in the bag it get put aside. And then all those rejects get sent to pig farmers as food and the pigs eat them bags and all!
MalevolentThings@reddit
You know that whole GMO thing that everyone is always so up in arms about and ready to blame for every little health concern in their lives? That's why. Even the "no GMO" labels are basically lies.
Blue_Star_Child@reddit
Yeah. Corn has always been GMO. Native Americans were the first to start it.
Rubik842@reddit
You can microwave normal popcorn in a paper bag or pyrex bowl with a plate as a lid.
GretaGreen3@reddit
Yep me too! Who knew you didn’t need all that greasy waxy butter oil to make popcorn.
coffeecat551@reddit
GenX passersby here. The first microwave popcorn that I remember coming out was made by Pillsbury (c.1980?) and it needed to be kept in the freezer. You put it into the microwave still frozen, set the timer for 5 minutes, and prayed to the small appliance gods that you'd get a few bites of edible popcorn among the burnt kernels and the plethora of "dead maids." It smelled wonderful if you could catch it before it scorched. The taste was... sadness and salt.
Olelander@reddit
…but they kept at, with that American spirit of ingenuity and industry, and microwave popcorn became the WAVE of the future!

I got so tired of the taste of microwave popcorn that I switched to an air popper. And then drizzle it with real butter.
Milkweedhugger@reddit
I used to love microwave kettle corn, but now nearly every brand uses sucralose (Splenda) instead of real sugar. Total bummer for those who choose to avoid artificial sweeteners.
sdavidson0819@reddit
I have a Belgian friend whose parents visited the US and absolutely hated movie theater popcorn. They just couldn't understand how we could eat it when it was so salty and greasy.
Then I visited Belgium and one of the coolest things I saw was a vending machine that popped it hot and fresh to order -- but it was "lightly" sweetened with the most cloying artificial sweetener. The joy of finding such a novelty was replaced with utter disappointment.
hamburgler26@reddit
I've been using a Whirley Pop and always have a box of Flavocol and it makes the best popcorn and doesn't take much more effort compared to a microwave bag. Haven't bothered with microwave in years.
I feel like it was always kinda half assed compared to any other method if you take any amount of time to do it right.
ShillinTheVillain@reddit
Plus the Whirley Pop is fun. I got it as a gift and use it more often than I thought I would. Which is maybe every 6 months when I remember that I own it.
Emannuelle-in-space@reddit
I assumed I’d just gotten used to it
MinivanPops@reddit
Food researcher: Consumer preferences.
Popcorn profiles from 1994 were very salty and buttery, especially away from home.
Bagged popcorn (Boom Chicka Pop) at Costco changed all that. Very light popcorn is perceived to be higher quality, but it's actually very profitable. It takes ingredients to create a convincing movie theater style popcorn. Very light popcorn is cheaper. Bagged popcorn weights much less than bagged chips, making logistics cheaper. It's a perfect Costco high margin product, so they gave it a lot of support.
Because it was Costco it was prestigious. Bagged popcorn not only became popular but also cheaper to make.
Broken-Sarcasm-Meter@reddit
I feel like it used to burn a lot, like it was super easy to make a bad bag that was burned. I don’t know if it’s experience or better quality but I haven’t burned popcorn in a while
phalangepatella@reddit
What I remember is the smell. It absolutely disgusted me.
Now it almost smells good when it’s popping.
FUWS@reddit
It might be other way around and popcorn back then was more natural ( not as tasty) and now we have frankin-popcorn. If it tastes too good, then it’s chemicals doing the trick.
Im basing this on actual corn on the cob now vs how they “ used” to taste….
Chicken and corn have lost all flavors due to GMO and antibiotics and it’s just synthetic food pretty much at this point.
LtPowers@reddit
You're just throwing out buzzwords and appear to have no understanding of what they actually mean.
Antibiotics have no effect on the flavor of chicken.
Corn, like a lot of other produce, has been bred for longevity and appearance rather than robust flavor. You could call that genetic modification, but it's really just selective breeding.
FUWS@reddit
No I’m not. It’s a buzzword to you but it’s something I’ve experienced and I can go get a free range chicken vs a store bought, antibiotics super caged chicken and it will taste different. You can see the size of the chicken difference from mass producing for fat ass Americans who’s been eating nothing but caged, stressed, injected with antibiotics chicken all their lives and think thats what it’s been tasting like. Its not a buzzword you just think it is because thats what you had all your life.
You just never had actual normal chicken.
LtPowers@reddit
You don't know what I've eaten.
No question a free-range organic chicken is going to taste different from a standard one. It's not the antibiotics, though.
VaticRogue@reddit
I think something about the technology really did change. I remember it being like 3:30-4:30 to cook now its like 2min flat. Am I crazy in remembering it that way?
Parisian_Nightsuit@reddit
Never knew is stopped being terrible. Always HATED the smell of microwave popcorn with that fake butter scent. It permeates the whole house.
If popcorn is made in my house these days, it’s kernels on the stovetop, tossed with a little butter, salt, and a chile powder blend. Crazy good.
Vargen_HK@reddit
I’ve found that the best popcorn is loose kernels in a microwave popper. Then I flavor it with butter and salt afterwards.
Hot air poppers leave the kernels a bit too spongy.
Stovetop is too easy for my ADHD brain to burn.
The microwave makes the best popcorn kernels; the issue has always been whatever they’d put in the bags to flavor it. So I flavor it myself with real butter. There are brands out there that have gotten good at flavoring the bags, but it’s cheaper to get a jar of loose popcorn and I know the toppings will be exactly what I want.
Maker_Matt@reddit
I still use a stir crazy myself, microwaved is still not as good and it really doesn't take that much more time.
Ok_Industry3016@reddit
Whem our taste buds changed lol
desertdweller2011@reddit
i haven’t owned a microwave in nearly 15 years and whenever i do eat regular microwave pop corn at someone else’s house, i can feel that chemically tongue feeling.
LtPowers@reddit
The what now?
desertdweller2011@reddit
the feeling of whatever is in that bag that coats your tongue lol
Mysterious_Fennel459@reddit
I've never liked popcorn.
solomons-marbles@reddit
Yeah, umm… still is. Read the ingredients and google popcorn lung.
imhereforthevotes@reddit
What? It still sucks.
Plus-Pomegranate8045@reddit
It depends on the kind you buy. I bought some generic brand butter one recently and it was coated in the same grainy sludge butter as you describe. I think the difference is today there are more options, including the ones that have light butter, which avoid that sludginess.
Rust_Bucket37@reddit
It's been a few years since we've had microwave popcorn. My brother in law grows his own popcorn among many other things. So we have an air popper and pounds of popcorn.
Deep-Interest9947@reddit
Theres like a million kinds of microwave popcorn so I don’t think your one experience is representative. Most of them are still pretty gross and coated in fake butter grease. I like the Orville Redenbacher “Naturals” one for its lack of greasy coating.

Did he ever come back from picking up the gallon of milk and pack of smokes?
full_of_ghosts@reddit (OP)
Yeah, this seems reasonable. The one I tried was a "natural, organic" brand with brown paper packaging designed to look "healthy" and "eco-friendly." Probably not a stretch to believe it's one of the better ones, with fewer synthetic ingredients.
Still surprised me, though. The mere mechanics of it -- that automatically unfolding, inflating bag -- is thoroughly associated with terrible popcorn in my mind.
Kellzy1212@reddit
Yep. I either buy this one or the lightly buttered one. The others are waxy and gross.
BillyBattsInTrunk@reddit
Growing up in NYC we had a supermarket chain called "Waldbaums," and their own signature popcorn RULED in the 80s. They used coconut oil, it was fantastic. Then some jerk's fat-phobic theory ruined using natural oils and fats (looking at you, Ancel Keys).
Moxie_Stardust@reddit
I don't remember it ever being terrible.
Funkopedia@reddit
Your just bought a bad brand that's all.
The real innovation is in the microwave though. The timer never worked right cause a timer was all it was. Still had to watch that thing like a hawk. Now when you hit the popcorn button it magically knows exactly when to stop.
chicacherrie82@reddit
Really? I grew up on microwave popcorn and loved it. I've eat air popped for years now and recently had a pack of microwave popcorn and it just did NOT taste good.
