Do you change the timer setting on your toaster?

I wondered why sometimes I need to put my bread in the toaster twice, and my partner revealed that they change the timer setting depending on how toasted they want the bread each time. I’ve never done that before. I’d just put it back in if it wasn’t done enough.

Yeah, toast on 4, potato waffles twice on full.
HenryFromYorkshire@reddit
Now wait just a minute. You can do potato waffles in the toaster? I know what I'm buying from asda this weekend.
ratfancier@reddit
I did this for a while after learning you could cook them that way, but eventually my toaster started getting gross. Before waffles, cleaning the toaster was just a case of emptying the crumb trays, shaking out the slots, and maybe quickly wiping down the outside, but I think over time, minuscule amounts of oil spit off the surfaces of the waffles onto the interior of the toaster, and every surface gets gradually coated in a thin, sticky layer of oil glue and then crumbs, and it's just impossible to get clean. Which wouldn't matter that much, but it smelt a bit nasty and bread would get stuck.

I did wonder about this, so thank you for the heads up. I'll stick with the air fryer I think then.
TheMasalaKnight@reddit
I’ve been doing them in the toaster for 25+ years but I think they’ve added it officially on to the packet now. It was the safest way to cook them when I was a kid and hungry.

They're waffley versatile.
Gold-Perception-8021@reddit
I turn it up for crumpets and midway for toast
I-Like-MTB@reddit
Damn controversial. I like to think I toast both my crumpets and bread to normal levels, but if I forget to take my crumpet out of the toaster it’s brunt
HotSpacewasajerk@reddit
This is the way
Matterbox@reddit
Ours has a timer. I’m a number 2 kind of guy.
SnooDonuts6494@reddit
I can't remember if it has a setting knob. If it does, I suspect it seized up decades ago.
Smeeble09@reddit
I always have it on roughly 2½ which is the right amount for things I'm toasting.
If I wanted different levels of toast for different items I would adjust it rather than double toasting.
SteakSandwichSideEye@reddit
I thought it was a heat setting, not a timer 🤷♂️
Superspark76@reddit
It is, the dial changes the resistance of the element to increase and decrease heat. The toaster taking more or less time is a coincidence.
Jenkes_of_Wolverton@reddit
It pops up the toast after a set time, regardless of how raw or burnt it is. Smart toasters are next generation sci-fi fantasy.
nikhkin@reddit
It changes how long the bread is toasted for. It doesn't change how hot the elements get.
The numbers are fairly arbitrary, though.
OmegaPoint6@reddit
Depends on the toaster, if it has a button for frozen bread then likely there is a 555 timer in there
Ok_Cow_3431@reddit
How is this even a question, yes i adjust time timer depending on what's going in there.
Do you adjust the time you cook things for on other methods like the hob, oven, grill, microwave or air fryer? Or do you always look at it after a set period of time to see if its done or needs to stay in?
NortonBurns@reddit
What if it was done too much?
MeteorSwarmGallifrey@reddit
Put it on the negative setting.
NortonBurns@reddit
the de-toaster… or should that just be the breader? ;)
thesaharadesert@reddit
You don’t want to ~~over~~underdo it though lest you end up with a pile of dough
taulish_paul@reddit
Or wheat in a field.
Jeggasyn@reddit
Pile of doh!
vipros42@reddit
I adjust it based on the thickness or the type of bread product. The same way I would appropriately adjust the settings on any device to suit the occasion. For instance, I put my car into all of the different gears at the appropriate time.
SnooCakes1636@reddit
You don’t drive a Honda Jazz then 😂
taulish_paul@reddit
Back that truck up. Powered by Worther's Originals doesn't seem so stupid with the Straits of Hormuz shit-show.
Jeggasyn@reddit
Just used to be called The Strait of Muz, until your mum went through it.
Soggy_Detective_4737@reddit
I always check to see if anyone's changed the setting. I like mine on full blast.
sihasihasi@reddit
Of course I do. Different bakery products take different amounts of time to toast.
BaBaFiCo@reddit
Yes. Different things need different levels of toasting. Why stand their watching or putting it back down when I can use the dial to adjust?
Original_Bad_3416@reddit
A rustler burger bun needs level 4, toast level 3 and crumpets 6
FornyHucker22@reddit
I just got a fancy new toaster with lots of settings and options so I have been playing around with it

Lonely-Job484@reddit
That's how many work - lever to lower/raise the bread, and then turn the dial to set the toasting time.
nikhkin@reddit
Of course I adjust the dial. It's a basic function of the toaster.
Once I know the setting I like, I twist it to that setting whenever I use it to make sure I get the toastedness I like.
Blue_wine_sloth@reddit
I like mine very lightly toasted so I put I to the lowest setting and do one full toast then 10-20 seconds of another toast.
Lessarocks@reddit
I do change it. Sourdough takes longer than my usual standard wholemeal.
ooh-sheet@reddit
I have to adjust it each time as I have a kid who thinks slightly warmed bread qualifies as toast, I’d be there all day pushing it back down to just do its time again.
Rubberfootman@reddit
I treat it like the shower temperature - it is my responsibility to make sure it is correct.
EvrythingAndNothing@reddit
What about for potato waffles? Whack it all the way up!
Superb-Ad-8823@reddit
The first slice is never right
Calm_Set_9433@reddit
Yes I put it on low and my Husband changes it to high and we flip flop between the settings.
Deep_Pepper_5405@reddit
I change the timer and if it still not good I might but it in again for a few seconds. I use frozen bread quite a bit so it needs different time than fresh bread.
Difficult_Bad1064@reddit
Get a 4 slice toaster. Each person gets one side of it.
