Who else misses the very iconic era of Romanian music? We seriously need to bring this kind of music back.

No, we should start listening to Slovak pop music from the 70s and 80s, it was amazing.
ILikeOldFilms@reddit
We actually don't need to bring this kind of music back.
This is me talking as a Romanian.
I really liked the old pop music from Romania that was made between 1998-2004.
Something changed after 2004. This techno-dance-pop shit started to become popular.
It might sound good for foreigners, but the old pop was sung in Romanian, it was really relatable. But I think the Internet started to be a thing and the target audience was not locals anymore.
It's also about the lyrics, about what the actual songs are about. I find the old pop quite diverse in thematics. This new dance is quite stereotypical. The old pop was catchy and melancholic in the same time, the old pop, was exemplified in the demo video, is about a guy that looks hot; btw, the song is just Inna saying Oh-beat-ooh-beat-ooh

It makes me sad this is considered 'iconic' when we have bands like Phoenix, Cargo, Bosquito. Heck, even Voltaj in its later configuration was producing much better music.
Though, I guess it's still better than being remembered through Salam sau Babasha
Sector3_Bucuresti@reddit
It's iconic because it had great success overseas. No one's heard of Bosquito in other countries.

I preferred the previous era, the first wave of Romanian hits that started with O-Zone's Dragostea din Tei and bands like Akcent and Aktiv.

sjolnick@reddit
She came to my high school's spring festival in Ankara lol. Inna and Shantel, it was crazy. Must've been 2011 or 2012
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Thatās pretty impressive that she performed at a high school. I donāt think that usually brings in a lot of money for performers.
sjolnick@reddit
Yeah, it was mind baffling. I heard they also brought Teoman in the previous years - one of the most famous musicians in Turkey.
Nermin Mehmet Cekic Anatolian High School was a nice lycee, required very high entry points, had amazing student-made large graffitis on all the walls, locsted in a left-center & opposition voting neighborhood and was influenced by that, but I read on the news that after Covid, Erdogan's party did a crackdown with a newly appointed principal and removed all the graffiti, brought a strict conservative dress code (there was none before), forced attendance to some religious events, destroyed the culture.. the festivals were already gone in the previous years, as the Party had already banned all youth festivals and spring events, even in universities. I no longer live in Turkey but, really miss those free days..
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Wow, thatās crazy. Those times are gone. Do you still live in Ankara?
sjolnick@reddit
Unfortunately (or fortunately?) no, I left Turkey as soon as I graduated that school, I've been living in Estonia for a long time now.
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Cool! Iāve never been to Estonia, but Iāve heard quality of life is very good there. You have to go where the winds set your sails. Have you visited Romania?
sjolnick@reddit
Btw nice nickname, the oldest known bird!
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
When I was a kid, this fossil inspired me to study science.
sjolnick@reddit
Yeah, it's pretty good! The economy has been tough since the war in Ukraine started, and the locals in countryside are struggling due to that, but I love that it's extremely safe, quiet, clean and religionless, can't complain much really. It's a beautiful place to visit for a 2-3 days vacation if you find cheap tickets.
Sadly no, I haven't set foot in the Balkans yet, been able to visit less than a handful of countries so far. However, every year I try to go to at least one new place, and this year it'll be Denmark just next week. Though I've had Romanian neighbors growing up, and now some colleagues. They're really fun people and good friends. Someday I hope to visit!
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Nice! You should definitely visit. Iād like to go to Turkey at some point too, but I live in the US, so itās far away.

Fun fact, I was in the same hughschool as Inna, her nickname was Piti, and she had gapped front teeth. I had a classmatr that dated her. She was just a normal girl back then, also she was super short.
Substratas@reddit (OP)
OMG SPILL THE TEAAA!!! ššš
Funny, some people in Albania used to say āpitiā as a baby talk for the word āshpirtiā, which means sweetheart (soul, literally), when they talk to their friends or partner.
IntenseEnema@reddit
Well the earliest memory I can recall of her was when she was a fake red-hair(like the chrome red bot the red red),with curly hair(if memory serves me right she had natural curly hair). We finished the Economic College of Mangalia, she was class 2006 I remember correctly.
Substratas@reddit (OP)
Idk why Iām imagining her biopic now with the narrator saying āPiti had gapped front teeth, curly red hair & a dreamā šš

I think this type of music won't be coming back charts anytime soon.
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
People want it back tho
St_Ascalon@reddit
I like any type of music, I'm not against it. I've even heard Inna or stan's whole albums before. But you have to check global trends. When Romanian popcorn was popular, similar type of positive electronic club music (gaga, kesha, katy perry, hell even fuckin pittbull) was popular in America and global. But now pop is changed even those big names either floped(katy) or had to reinvented(gaga and kesha) themselves
Archaeopteryx111@reddit
Yeah, pop music used to be more fun.
Happy-Hour88@reddit
You're looking at the past with rose colored glasses, it was trashy music that makes songs from 2020 like Blinding Lights, Say So and Dynamite look like Mozart. If anything the earlier Romanian hits from 2003-2005 by bands like Akcent and Active were better.

That music sucks. First, it's in some Borat English that's embarrassing. Second, it's devoid of any soul or melody or even rhythm. Balkan beats are 1000 times better, and 100000000 times more authentic than any of they Eurovision type slop sung in bad English by illiterate village girls.
LingonberryDizzy6633@reddit
Essentially you're right. It's a generic pop melody paired with a hot girl that went viral at the right time.
Double-Aide-6711@reddit
I feel for you, man. You're not even sensitive to the vibe of Inna's music as a Romanian and Balkan. Life must be tough.
fk_censors@reddit
I prefer Sinan Hoxha 10000000 times more, if that makes sense. It's more authentic and not so forced. At least he knows the language he is singing in, and it sounds so much better to my Balkan ears. There's nothing Balkan about Inna and that type of music.
Double-Aide-6711@reddit
The accent and atmosphere are very Balkan, it's certainly not folk pop, but the influence is still noticeable. At no point does Inna give the impression of not being from the Balkans.
