What are things that every person in Dallas should experience?
Posted by Crying_in_99Ranch@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 301 comments
Basically what things would you miss if you moved out of state or what things you have to experience to consider yourself officially a local.
Doesn't have to be that interesting even something like eating at Braums or getting late night tacos.
Fun-Ganache-9312@reddit
Moved to the west coast about 5 yrs ago. Dallas native but you can't go wrong with most any Tex mex, & Braums for sure.. hahaha. Nothing else really but the TX State Fair and football at least once. There are some great scenic areas in the hill country -- However, I'm an ex Dallas native and biased now due to politics. Can't beat the West Coast though and we travel from the SF Bay Area all the way up to Washington often.

Truckyard in Dallas, Hutchins bbq in McKinney, Legacy Hall in Frisco.

A good EF3 or EF4 tornado, in addition to a good hood wrecking hailstorm.

In the following days, a knock at the door of a roof repair sales person.
saplinglearningsucks@reddit
we were in the neighborhood fixing your neighbors roof caused by damage from the recent storm, do you mind if we take a look at your roof, it's free!

“We’re taking care of Roger and Susy down the street…” foh with the fake name dropping

Fortunately if you’re not home you will receive a phone call from a kind gentleman letting you know he will be in the neighborhood tomorrow and has no problem stopping by to inspect your roof.

I don't remember it since I was 3 at the time, but my childhood home in North Dallas – near Midway & Royal – got hit by the May 1976 tornado that was the strongest known to have hit the city at the time, and tore off part of our roof.
While we moved away not longer after, the same area also hit by the October 2019 twister, an EF-3. Multiple houses less than two blocks from ours were destroyed.
I know the old saying about lightning not striking in the same place twice, but I guess it doesn't apply to tornadoes.
TacosNGuns@reddit
My old hood. Went to Walnut Hill Elem

Living in a place where your tax dollars are actually used for improving things where you live and not for making the ruling party for the last 30 years and their mega church buddies richer.
Medical-Orchid4215@reddit
The realization that most of the people around here rolling Escalades and G-Wagons aren't really doing any better than you. They are leveraged to their eyeballs and one financial mishap away from ruin.
Source: I see credit reports and apps for a ton of business owners around here and the amount of people making $X per month and somehow spending $X + 15% per month is mind blowing.
Broad_Mushroom_8033@reddit
I'm in my early thirties, no debt, have about 380k in investments/cash. Make just over 100k, I rent, and have a 2025 paid off car. How would you rank me.

After_Term5658@reddit

It seems that I poked the hornets nest a bit with this.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
You are top 10% (minimum) for your age group in net worth. Closer to top 1%, for your age group, but I cant' say for sure. For the entire US population (all age groups), you are in the top half in net worth and top 20% for individual income, top \~50% or so for family income.

TransportationEng@reddit
Donut spot kolachies are okay, but there are a few better places.
littlemachina@reddit
If you ever drive towards Austin, there's a little town an hour and a half from here called West, TX with a famous kolache spot called The Czech Stop. They're great. Lines can be long but they move fast and it's worth it!

Just wondering - with La Madeleine being a national chain, why would that be a can't miss for Dallas? It's like saying "OH man don't miss the Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme next time you're in Albuquerque!"
bugattibrito@reddit
La Madeline I think originated in dallas
sisterfunkhaus@reddit
Their food sucks now. Many years ago a lot was made in house. They used to roast rotisserie chickens in house. In the mid 1980's-early 2000's the food was pretty stellar for fast casual. Now it's just not good, like so many other places.
AwHellNawFetaCheese@reddit
Did not know that! Even so as I mentioned in another comment. Chipotle started in Denver, I'm not gonna to say it's "something every person in Denver should experience"
Cheese_wiz_kid@reddit
I live in Denver and it’s always the first place I take my out of town guests

raucus_one@reddit
La Madaleine did start in Dallas but with all due respect it is a shadow of it's former self. In the 80s and early 90s, it's breakfast was unrivaled. Their tomato basil soup made Dallas "best of" lists consistently. For me, there is nothing that stands out about it. I hope it does better in the future as I have fond memories of the place.
etiennegeaux66@reddit
Indeed. The original on Mockingbird by SMU. In the 80s there, all employees were from France

Do people really feel that way? I don't eat it all the time but it's one my go to's if I'm going to do fast food and have literally never experienced this.
Though I eat a decent amount of fiber on a daily basis so a rogue bean in my lunch doesn't make me shit my pants.
RepulsiveInterview44@reddit
I have purposely not eaten there since ~2011. Former coworker worked at Aetna full-time setting up corporate insurance policies. Told us how the Yum! Brands (Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, etc) policy was taking forever because there was a fight over an exclusion for Hepatitis A coverage because of the prevalence of employees not washing their hands after using the damn bathroom.
AwHellNawFetaCheese@reddit
Hot damn well I don't blame you. I assume there's despicable shit like this imbued in every product I buy so this wont deter me, I'm also vaccinated so.

Thanks for the recommendation. I miss the Austin vibes and yearn for it. So this should be suffice until I can return south.

Ice skating at the Galleria, walking around NorthPark, the Holocaust museum, Thanksgiving Square, Old City Park, Oak Cliff Nature Preserve, Trinity Center Audubon, definitely the burger from Lee Harvey’s, and live music in Deep Ellum.

The Dallas world aquarium is gorgeous and a beautiful sight for plant lovers too. Meow wolf in grapevine is a cool art installation and there’s a storyline to it too! Frozen alcoholic yoohoo as double wide. I’d also recommend KBBQ too, Korea town has a ton of authentic spots.

As someone who moved away. All the pro sporting events, arboretum/white rock lake, state fair, reunion tower, a night out in deep ellum, a night out bar hopping in Oak Lawn, Cowboys Red River on a Thursday night, wandering through Central Market, driving way over the speed limit on DNT with a great playlist, driving on 635 late at night, a good patio brunch, Campisi’s, Pappas steakhouse, Dallas Tex Mex restaurant of choice, 6th Floor museum, and the Perot museum, Honorable mention to the Ft Worth water gardens.

The Chapel of Thanks-Giving Square. I'm not religious but it is truly a beautiful monument with an inspirational stained glass ceiling that almost no local even knows about. That square itself is already well maintained, but it could be much more of a gathering place if people went more.

Road rage for no apparent reason. Unsolicited and unwarranted honks from impatient drivers. A big jacked up truck literally riding in your backseat down the highway (because 100 MPH isn't fast enough...). I love home!

Burgers from Wingfield’s in OC. The entire experience from parking, to ordering at the counter (don’t forget the red Koolaid) to eating in your car & hopefully making it back home safely is an adventure. Best damn burgers though!

I’d miss the state fair. As expensive as the food and rides have gotten, the shows are still great and entry is affordable on weekdays with all the promotions. I grew up on the east coast with only rinky dink county fairs with fried Oreos as the most exotic thing to eat. The Texas state fair blew my mind the first time I went.
I also associate the state fair to the end of our long and miserable summer since most years I’m in a hoodie by the time the fair comes around.
