I did made a post last year and shared with you some photos of my very first and hopefully last cylinder head porting in hope to get some advices. which actually led to a comparison between blue balls and intake ports 😂
Well yeah, it took me a while to make the correct tools andz finish the head.

Polished intake ports is nothing that you should do if you dosent invest in real good injectors and a correct tune of the computer. Rough surface makes the air/fuel mix better due to the fuel will atomize better. Polished is only better for engines that going on high rpm all the time like drift cars, dragrace, rally cars etc.

Will run a standalone ecu, better camshafts, etc.

I know a guy who got really drunk one night at the track and claimed he had almost 20k in a blueprinted motor in his spec Miata. He was getting gaped on straights anyways bc he was coming out of corners bad.

Put custom suspension on, immediately slam the car to the ground, max spring rate, shock rate, rollback rate. Can't understand why it handles like shit.
IISerpentineII@reddit
I did the exact opposite in one of the Forza Motorsport games with a Datsun. Swapped in a GT-R drivetrain and upgraded everything except the springs and shocks, and left all suspension settings at default.
I was very nearly popping wheelies every single time I upshifted (sometimes I did). It was absolutely hilarious outrunning a Bugatti Veyron for most of the Mulsanne Straight on Le Mans with the rear end bottomed out the entire way.

I had a black and white exige, with panda graphics. I would blip the throttle and try to smoke tires sideways for a whole lap.
I could've dialed in the suspension, but then I would have nothing to talk about on Reddit, twenty years later.

I read somewhere that since gran Turismo doesn't (or at least didn't, haven't played any of the newer ones) simulate brake fade, that brake upgrades would worthless. Most of the cars could lock up the tires on stock brakes. So you're not going to get anymore braking force than that.

Oh man this is such a flashback xD thanks for that laugh

I rent the garage from a lady who was the wife of the deceased owner of a company that used to manufacture joinery, windows, and wooden furniture. However, after the company went bankrupt and the bank tried to take over the entire complex, the case has been dragging on in court for years because nothing is officially registered.
Honestly, I’d love to stay there forever, because there are no family houses nearby and I can literally make noise at 3:00 a.m. without anyone calling the police—and even if I do, they can’t enter since everything is fenced off 😄

It's not a jag but e91, and golf sport wagons are around if you can find them, both available with a manual.
LabyrinthConvention@reddit
I'm even seeing them sell under 10K which is nice. I finally found one and I'm honestly surprised how much I'm enjoying it. at 15 yo inherently a bit of a project but not crazy.
KillerKian@reddit
I have one too and I fucking love it. Unfortunately spun a bearing but I picked up a used motor with half the miles on it as the original. I'll rebuild the original someday but I unfortunately don't have the space to do so right now.

And what is the difference in flow?
While they look good, my initial reaction says its too far for performance gains as some texture is good for airflow.
HunterShotBear@reddit
Not only good for air flow, but the turbulence created by slight texturing aids in fuel atomization as well
DNA_Gyrase@reddit
I dont think the turbulence from texture would matter very much if at all, especially on a port injected motor where the fuel is being sprayed on a hot valve and vaporizing all in a few miliseconds. If a port is relying on turbulence of air to help atomize fuel, then there are some fundamental issues with the setup (carburetors etc.)
sl33ksnypr@reddit
I think it's also about how the air swirls into the cylinder. The fuel atomizing is probably not much of an issue as you said, but getting it and the air into the cylinder equally can help with efficiency (power and mpg).
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
I haven‘t built one. It‘s a street build.
Thee_Sinner@reddit

rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
Googled it, came across jafromobile only!?
Thee_Sinner@reddit
Yeah, he’s got a number of videos about porting and polishing heads
FreeMoCo2009@reddit
Looks good, but don’t polish too much 😬 The lumps and dents in castings help keep airflow turbulent and help with mixing the fuel/air combo going in, which makes more power 👀
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
The polished ports are the exhaust ports. The intake ports are 120 grit finish.
FiatTuner@reddit
knifing the devider is a no no
how much did you shorten the guides? for the high rpm/street builds you would prefer to sacrifice 10cfm for the longevity
that aside, it's nice to see porting work :)
do you have any info on what you done? aka raised port roof by 1mm and such?
any before and after measurements?
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
Knifing divider been reading about that some say it‘s ok some not. I assume it‘s depending on the spray pattern of the injectors. At the moment I got Subaru Legacy 3.0 Injectors which have 12 spray nozzles, pretty sure the fuel will be enough atomised for better mixture.
I removed the exhaust guides and bought new ones as I don‘t want to have issues with stability loss and heat transfer.
Huh I‘m pretty sure my English vocabulary won‘t be enough if I try to explain everything what has been done.
I did not remove that much of material as I was bit of afraid not to overkill it and risk power loss.
I’m quite sure I did remove 2-3mm material all around. Took care about all sharp edges (steps), short turn radius has been done by hand and long sandpaper strips to create a smooth surface to actually keep/increase the flow speed before entering the combustion chamber.
In all, I just imagined/compared the ports to be a super miniature slide and went that way to improve and clean the fuel air mixtures track.
FiatTuner@reddit
read more, remember, the most aerodynamic shape is a tear drop, big boost and a lot of other stuff may require a different approach but for the NA stuff make it as similar as a tear drop
usually, even the stock 20y old injectors in the slowest of the ports attomize well
keeping the speed up is the key with 16v heads, especially NA in a street form
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
Where have you been 365 days ago? 😂
Thank you for your advices!
FiatTuner@reddit
shit
I'm all for the backyard things but you should read more, I have a few books to recommend if you want
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
Thank you for your offer bro, gotta continue with the build, a lot of work still waiting for me…
66NickS@reddit
Hopefully you didn’t polish the intake sides… you want surface texture there to prompt mixing and reduce fuel dripping out of suspension/sticking to the walls.
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
Rough intake side, polished exhaust side. New valve guides for the exhaust valves.
FACE_MACSHOOTY@reddit
What's the flowbench difference show?
seamus_mc@reddit
That perfectly polished intakes don’t necessarily flow better because of boundary layer physics.
The change in shape can add power but polishing to a finish can actually go back the other way.
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
The polished ports are the exhaust ports.
KnownSoldier04@reddit
That’s for heat rejection, more than flow characteristics. In principle, less area by being smoother means a bit less of Exhaust heat goes in the coolant.

Curious what tools/ attachments did you use? I’m planning on trying something on my 2.5 5 cyl
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
Got myself some valves, cut the stem and made a 2-3cm cut on one side. I used mostly sandpaper for rotary sanding machines as it has a cloth instead of paper backside. Triangle shaped strips for sandpaper rolls, shorter strips for a double sided cca. 6cm strip (flapping) And some different grit sandpaper sponges cutted in strips. Ofcourse I did use a dremel too.
LVBeatzMusic@reddit
POLISHED CHAMBERS TOO 🤤🤤🤤
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
Bit of a flex 🙃

Increased velocity in the chambers may help mixture swirl, also looks sick lol

Looks good but the big question is does it flow better? It may flow more, but maybe not every valve lift. It may be a dog now at low rpm.
Did you measure each port and make them exactly exactly the same?
There is quite a bit to be gained or lost just in valve seats and angle and widths. Even the shape of the valve stem in the port has an effect.
rocko_garnier@reddit (OP)
I made myself a outside caliper measuring tool. And for the intake ports I used the exhaust valve as reference. Every new step has been done to each port.
