I grew up in the Northeast. I used to go to lots of shows (90s) in Conn., Western Mass, and Boston area. Are there any Nigel Six or Mephiskapheles fans??
I saw Against All Authority at The Rat in Boston . I do not think I have ever seen anyone play music so fast in my entire life. It was wild! I was also a big fan of The Amazing Crowns (formerly The Amazing Royal Crowns). 1965 G.T.O. is a great start if anyone wants to check them out.
I was just listening to them last night at work, that and Choking Victim. My ex got them to play with his band in Buffalo NY where I'm from back in 2002. It was such a small venue that we had to turn people away. At the end of the show when we were taking care of payment to the bands Stza was seriously asking where to score some crack 😂 Honestly it was one of the best shows ever!
It’s really great too. So is Let’s Go. I just think AOCTW is a little better paced and consistent. I know that some people find the production a little too slick, but the remaster sounds amazing.
Nice! I was always on the wrong coast. Drove up to Chicago to see The Vindictives once, but overall, I was always in the wrong place for most of those bands.
I saw a band in Honolulu, they did an absolute pitch perfect cover of that entire album. Front to back. I was shocked at how good it was. I wish I knew the name of that band.
I still have my Op Ivy shirt from when I was in 10th grade, and it’s still wearable in public outside of the gym (that’s where all of my old band shirts eventually end up)
For some reason a couple of weeks ago I needed to hear sound system. And then suicide machines. Bands from when I was a kid end I haven’t listened to in years and I still know every single word
I was at the airport bar a few weeks ago and sat next to middle aged guy with a horn case talking to a good looking 30- something woman. He got up to leave, and she stopped him to ask if there was a way she could hear some of his music. He sorta mumbled something to her and skedaddled to his gate or whatever. There was a bit of silence, then she leaned over to me and said "That guy just told me is band is called .....The Cherry......Poppin' Daddies?"
I said "Oh yeah, they're locals. I used to work on one of their vans."
She said "Oh, I'm not from here, just stranded for a day, so I don't know them. I think the name is kinda funny. I don't care, and now I know what I'm listening to tonight!"
I told her they were totally a big thing in the 90s during the Ska and Swing revival craze, but it was probably a bit before her time. I asked what she did that had her stranded at a tiny airport.
She kinda blushed a bit and said ".....sales."
I said "Stuff needs sellin', that's a perfectly fine career. What do you sell?"
She blushed again. "Well, you know when like....you....or someone like you, maybe a little older....goes to the doctor....." ::Makes finger in hole gesture::
"Well, I sell a test that makes it so you don't have to do that...."
I said, "That's a damn honorable career then, and I appreciate what you do! Also, that's pretty funny.... Both of y'all were embarrassed to say, but both are kinda in the same field. He's a cherry poppin' daddy, and you prevent daddies from getting their cherries popped!"
Too bad I had to catch my flight too. She was a pretty rad gal.
A friend of mine used to play in Mustard Plug! It made him kind of a local celeb for some of us. Interestingly, his musical interests pivoted considerably & he moved onto more "indie" pastures in his mid-20s.
The VERY FIRST concert that I went to, without being accompanied by my parents, was a show at Fitzgeralds in Houston featuring MU330 and Less Than Jake.
My eyes were opened to a whole new world that day. Man... what a time to be alive.
Dan Potthast from MU330 has had a pretty cool career. His solo project Dan P and the Bricks was very good, and he's been a touring member of Jeff Rosenstock's band on and off
Back in the early 00’s I randomly found a song on line wore or Kazaa or whatever that I was obsessed with and it made it onto a few mix CDs that I no longer have. I have completely forgotten the song and the band but I was reminded of them when I first heard Maneskin.
It’s been driving me crazy that I will never remember what song/band this was.
That song also reminded me of something I couldn’t put my finger on when I first heard it. Kinda reminded me of Reef, “Place Your Hands” but it’s just his voice is vaguely reminiscent
I went on Spotify and listened to every band and song I could find hoping it would come to me. I feel like it was a European group but I’ve never been able to narrow it down. I wish I could even remember a lyric or something!
I know that feeling. This song popped in my head last week from back then and I cannot figure out what it is. I have a lyric, I have a basic melody for one part, but I posted in two different subs here and nobody has any clue. I also tried out local Facebook group thinking it might’ve been a local regional band when I grew up, but nobody seems to know what this is
Dude, this conversation prompted me to just google it one more time for shits and giggles and I found this 4 year old reddit comment that solved this for. I was completely wrong about everything I thought I remembered about the band hahahaha.
Amazing! I’ve tried everything to find mine, no idea what my next move is. Best lead I have is it might have been a local/regional band that was getting airplay but I can’t find anything about the band it might be
I was just getting into music in 9th grade in 2000 and my buddy that was in the metal scene gave me a less than Jake cd and swore me to secrecy that I didn't get it from him. I didn't understand until I too got into the scene a year later. But I still listened to Jake when I wanted to because fuckem
Funny story, I won the blueberry pie eating contest at my high school job at a bakery, then my friend showed up to the concert with blueberry Smirnoff. Didn’t end well.
Maybe. I thought he’d changed it to Strictly Underground by then, but maybe not. My timelines are fuzzy from then. I can’t remember the owners name, but he was friends with our boss at Blockbuster (Dj Raz) so i think that’s how we got invited. The store moved to Sarasota Square at one point.
The Christian alt kids at school got me into FIF and although I wasn’t religious, I was obsessed with them for years! I’d found out about them right as they broke up, and then heard they were doing a farewell tour. I lost my damn mind. Saw them in Salem, OR at the armory in 2003.
They weren’t my first show, but they were my kids very first show (post reunion) at Levitt Pavilion in Denver. I’ve seen FIF more than any other band, probably nearing 40ish times, and I ran “security” for the KY show during their farewell tour. They are absolutely amazing human beings, besides making fun (and meaningful) music.
100%. I saw them 2 or 3 times here in the UK in the late 90s/early 2000s and was shocked at how good they were live. Got to meet them once and they drew nipples on my Bert and Ernie backpack. They wanted to draw genitals too, but I was like 17 and said my mum probably wouldn't approve.
I also mentioned that I loved that I Think I Love You was at the end of one of the Scream movies and they were like "Sorry, what?". They legit didn't know. Hope they got their money lol.
I worked crowd control at a LTJ show in San Antonio many moons ago. They were awesome and it was the only show I had to stop someone from rushing the stage.
If you are talking about Shirley Manson of Garbage. She is still great, still making music with "the boys", and has a podcast. And still as unapologetically beautiful and outspoken as ever.
Also, too many bands and fun ska memories for me to list, but one of my all time favorite tracks is the Inspector Gadget theme song by Ska King Crab.
Eh. It's not really though. The band I was in played first and second wave Ska stuff. The third wave stuff was more punk-like. Our audiences were a weird mix of folks.
Yeah, I was asked to explain it to someone born around 2000. I said kind of poppy or peppy punk music that you would hop up and down to in place while horns are playing. She got it right away.
Fun fact ska was invented by a Jamaican reggae band. We saw them in Albany a few years ago. They played for free, even. Brb, I'll get you their name. Because they rocked.
Reggae comes after ska on the timeline, so it's not accurate to say a reggae band "invented" ska. Reggae did emerge from ska and they have very intertwined histories, especially before they left Jamaica.
So they lied to thousands of people when they said they invented ska? And it documented on YouTube and Google and other sources. But they lied, because you know better?
No need to get defensive. That user isn't wrong. It may be that the band your referencing is claiming to have invented a version of ska? There's been several differing waves. Here's a pretty good article on the origins.
No, the innacurate part was calling them a reggae band I guess. Reggae didn't exist when ska came onto the scene. Maybe I'm not saying something right? Are you really arguing that reggae predated ska? That's just not true. That's all I'm saying.
I loved ska in the '90s! I was a sheltered Christian kid but ska even made it into Christian music. The W's and the OC Superstones were fun. I went to a local Irish fest and there was a live Irish ska band that was a blast. When I caught up on the mainstream music I'd missed out on it was fun to hear the ska influence in No Doubt.
I'm sorry, but the video guy has no idea what he's doing. He reminds me of today's kids who wear a Korn tee while doing a stupid dance on tiktok....to Korn.
He was too ... gentle. Trying a little too far to be cool. And barely did a skank.
Oh, shit, it's this guy, I didn't actually click play until now. He's TikTok famous for, like, pointing at stuff while a song plays, I think. So yeah, I'll bet he's never skanked.
I can tell you from recent experience that skanking is a young man's game. I went to a Pietasters show not too long ago and discovered that my body does not work like it used to.
Bruh. Is Steve still the lead singer? He went to my university a couple of years before I did, used to sleep with one of my friends when they came back for shows.
But - you did it didn't you. You crushed it out there, sacrificed your body, wore earplugs, and knew that Tylenol was waiting for you after the show. You did this because you aren't the tool in this video! Skank on!
Yeah I mean I had one good song in me. Back in the day the only band to outlast me was the Toasters. They showed up like they were ready to pull an 8 hour day. They played I think their entire discography in 1.5x time. Even their merch was just work clothes. They wanted the whole crowd to know they were adults and we were children.
Unintended Consequence. Every time I recive a notifcation that somone commented in this thread, I see that cringe-ass video. This guy almost certainly tried to impress his HS crush by learning Jewel on guitar - but she ended up dating the Blue Meanies kid, so he held a grudge up until he posted that video.
"you haven't heard about SKA?!? Your parents are such NERDS. Hey Johnny, go in the backroom and change the store music to Reel Big Fish! No way, they're not on Spotify. You'll probably have to search Napster. Ope! My bad, Napster doesn't exist anymore. My Y2K-self had a brainfart. I'm so OLD. So Chad, what are you doing this weekend?" - probably, definitely this guy
This was me in the pit last weekend. I went to see Goldfinger, and an all-star ska band called sullvn opened and played this song. I'm 43 and I don't care. It's my art
Not sure if you’re paying attention to the last wave and what they’re up to. Dickie Betts is a crazy anti-vaxxer, Monique Powell is a Trumper that kicked all of the original members out of the band, Gwen Stefani is selling bibles with her country musician husband. Orange County California is MAGA to the core and that’s where so many of the 90s “ska” bands originated.
Please I have been begging for 4th wave ska since the pandemic started, i was following a one man ska band for a bit on facebook but he was young so he probably left lmao
Go see streetlight manifesto on their tour this year and you won’t regret loving ska. There is a so much terrible ska. But the good stuff is amazing still.
Mine are London Undergrounds with the checkered soles and skull. I found someone selling them https://poshmark.com/listing/Vintage-Y2k-London-Underground-Black-and-White-Oxford-Creeper-Shoes-68b0c69d2981af649957a86a
Gwen Stefani and No Doubt back when No Dout was cool and I guess you can call some of Green Day ska but I could be wrong - other than that I didn’t pay attention to it as it was pretty garbage (lol) music
We had the buzz bake sale 12 bands 12 dollars they played just as the were blowing up, especially this song, always loved that royal oil song, get of the horse man
That god damn tempo and their guitar is so fucking good. 1956 g.t.o. song. is just so intense. The whole album is intense like heroin aka their first song.
In Back to the Future I think Marty should have played one of these songs when he shows how throbbing music can be.
throw back a bottle of beer! cherry poppin daddies and big bag voodoo daddy. i will always have a soft spot in my heart for it. i even on some swing dancing competitions as a college kid back in the day... until i left the whole thing behind bc my college boyf cheated on me with another swing dancer who became his swing dance partner and that was the end of the era. oh so 90s
I worked at a clothing store that rented tuxes from like 2001-05, and I fitted so many dudes for zoot suit-style prom tuxes. 😂 Two-tone saddle Oxfords, watch chain, suspenders, hat, the whole nine.
I just looked up where to take lessons a month ago. I have looked up where to learn swing dancing randomly over the last 30 years in every state that I have lived in and have yet to take even one lesson...lol I could've been amazing at it by now!
Weirdly, it was my fault listening to all of that big band that got my dad swing dancing, which got his new pianist wife into jazz and now she does New Orleans style jazz a lot. Still love some Benny Goodman.
me: excited to go to a swing event at a local hotel that year. Live Tommy Dorsey and Benny, and a dance floor!
Reality: event was full of 70 year olds sitting at tables and taking about victory gardens and ration books, and 16 year old me in a swing skirt and two tone shoes.
My daughter was like this ever since she was a baby. I left a toxic job to be a haus mensch, and if she'd get fussy when I put her down to fold laundry, the pastels and synth music of Miami Vice would chill her. She bops her head along to NoFX and sings along with the Dropkick Murphys. If it's energetic and off tempo, she loves it!
Saw the Bosstones and Reel big fish a few times lol Saw the Bosstones at an HFStival in DC or MD. Can’t remember which year it was. They were awesome! B-52’s played that same year I think. I can see a ska revival happening for sure.
I'll be honest, I never got into this stuff. I remember it being big in like, my junior year of high school. That year I was really into Garbage's Version 2.0, Offspring's Americana, Pearl Jam's Yield, and stuff like that. But I thought of ska as music for Old Navy commercials.
I was literally in a ska band. We opened for the band (The Pietasters) that opened for these guys at a show. Greatest show we ever played. The Pietasters completely dominated the stage. It was hilarious. They had a smoke machine and lasers. MMBT just did a regular set. Also a good show but Pietasters were a surprisingly tough act to follow.
This song made me hate Ska in the dumbest way. Remember when MTV would play actual music videos. Remember.
Imagine falling asleep to Love Line, then being abruptly woken up by this song. From that day forward Ska could kiss it.
some of us are having a ska present. and rocksteady and reggae. realizing who did some of the songs these white bands covered for the first time. it's nice.
Some of us have a ska present! Lots of great bands under Bad Time Records like Catbite and Kill Lincoln. Great Mexican and Chicano ska like Left Alone and Voodoo Glow Skulls. Second wave still out there representing like The Selector. Political ska like Jer. Lots of other English ska like Call Me Malcom, popes of chilitown, the Skints.
For people who aren’t aware there is still a vibrant ska scene, even if it isn’t mainstream (aside from the Interruptors)
I remember when this was the worse fad. I was in a band. We were playing rock and they came to me saying we’re gonna start playing ska…. I protested and eventually left a band I started. The group replaced me and last another month or so.
Ska was awful
This is simply a great song though. I loved it when I was a child and still do. Never heard of this genre ska but the song by itself is a masterfully written song.
I love Ska. But I heard something one day that made me laugh. “ Ska music is the sound in a 13 years old head when they get an order of mozzarella sticks.” I don’t know why I remember that.
Bosstones are ska adjacent. They are a little heavier with an extra shot of rock, blues, and especially punk. Some of those ska bands are downright dainty!
Ska shows were so much fun! I saw Reel Big Fish play in a shitty basement venue before I knew what ska was and it altered my brain chemistry. They were giving out the red 35s of Take on Me. I wish I still had mine.
Less Than Jake and Voodoo Glowskulls got a lot of my spending money in college, either in buying CDs, or going to shows. Although a healthy amount went to beer at those shows as well. 😂
Second wave 2 Tone ska is fantastic! The Specials are one of the greatest bands ever.
3ird wave ska in the 90s wiad the refuge of band students, which is cool 'cept the music is cheeky-ass fuckin' family friendly dork music. Not my cup of tea.
But bring on the second, or the first wave. That's the good shit.
Reel Big Fish and Save Ferris were some of the BEST live shows I have been to in my entire life. Of course I was in high school at the time and had the energy to skank. I will die on this hill though. It’s a fun genre.
Skanking Pickle, Hepcat, The Toasters, The Skeletones, The Specials, The Skatalites, etc ... Such a great and weird time to be a music fan. So many good shows.
Saw them tour in 2001 in NYC. I remember the tour was called "crouching fish hidden finger" w/ goldfinger. RxBandits opened and soon became my favorite band. The thing thats got me now is thinking about how a Chinese language arthouse film was so mainstreamed in 2000, the title could be satirized by ska/punk and everyone got the reference. I can't imagine a film like that film landing that broadly with culture every again. I guess it would have to be meme'd first and then the collective reference point and awareness would be from the meme not the film itself.
Geez, I remember MTV did "SKA-turday" and everyone 'dancing' like they 80 yr old geriatrics at the rec center.
My Ska band did a show that day, Colin my singer made fun of MTV and we promptly did our set while our fans 'skanked', the club thought they were moshing and threatened to shut us off.
I got to see them about 25yrs ago at a place called the Nite Owl (obviously they played that song), and then 20yrs later saw them again at a free show at a park venue just down the street from where they played previously.
I was into original Jamaican ska, but I didn’t really get into much ska revival outside The Soecials. I was thrilled to see it at the time though, watching a (at the time) 30 year old style from a tiny Caribbean island blow up was awesome.
to borrow a phrase from another genre - It wasn't a phase. I still pickitup in my 40s, my back may be paying for it, but thats why i pay for the reserved seats when i see streetlight manifesto now.
Man when I was a kid my dad drove a cab, somebody left a CD binder of the absolute weirdest fucking music in there and he was unable to return it to them so he passed it off to me. That’s how I got introduced to the mighty mighty bosstones. There was also some weird a cappella shit and amateur new age concept albums. Wild
MC Lars has a song called "This Gigantic Robot Kills" about a kid building a Giant Robot and sending everything back to 1996 and bringing back 3rd Wave Ska. I love it.
Why not use a decent song and one where the lead singer isn’t a POS?
“The Mighty Mighty Bosstones broke up in January 2022 shortly after frontman Dicky Barrett was linked to a song produced for a Robert F. Kennedy Jr. anti-vaccine rally.
The controversy centered on Barrett’s anti-vaccination views and involvement in promoting the "Defeat the Mandates" rally, which led to the band's sudden split, according to the Phoenix New Times and Rolling Stone.”
In high school ( class of ‘97) I parked next to a guy who has his car covered in stickers for Ska bands. Operation Ivy, The Specials, Goldfinger, Bosstones, it was like a few dozen stickers at least. And then of course one NIN sticker too,
Random third wave ska recommendation: Thumper. Their album, No One Left the Disco Alive, is more atmospheric than any other punk ska album I've heard. I lean metal in my tastes, and clearly someone in Thumper does, too, because there are some killer guitar riffs on the album. I saw them live on the album tour and it was a top memory from high school. I rarely hear Thumper included in conversations like this, so I'm chiming in.
I'm not ashamed to admit I was a fan of bands like Cherry Poppin Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Royal Crown Revue, and the Chicago locals Mighty Blue Kings
Some people listened to, y’know, real ska music from Jamaica (and still do).
I play classic ska (Desmond Dekker, Ken Boothe, Lee Perry) every morning in my class and the kids love it. Don’t worry I have a class playlist that the kids get to choose too, but we always start with ska every morning. It just starts the day off on the right vibe.
Just when I thought I had moved away from listening to Ska, I got a job at a bar in NC, and they'd book a lot of Ska core bands, and man, Florida was really putting out some good stuff in the late 90's, like The Spitvalves and the Supervillains. Those guys were fantastic.
In a technical sense though
no one associates it with that era, the origins are typically associated with the 60s. Also you sound like a complete asshole.
I'd check out Jeff Rosenstock if you want some good modern punk that occasionally dips into Ska. He did a full Ska rerecording of his album No Dream a couple of years back
I love the Mighty Mighty BossTones. My brother is six years older than me and he got me into them when I was a kid in the 1990’s. I’ll be 42 in October and he’ll be 48 in December. We both still listen to the Mighty Mighty BossTones.
The main reason I ever saw ska bands live was watching my friends punk bands lose to them at the Battle of the bands... Oh well, at least they beat the rap rock band.

Back in the early 00’s I randomly found a song on line wore or Kazaa or whatever that I was obsessed with and it made it onto a few mix CDs that I no longer have. I have completely forgotten the song and the band but I was reminded of them when I first heard Maneskin.
It’s been driving me crazy that I will never remember what song/band this was.
therealpopkiller@reddit
Do you remember anything else about the song?
buffysmanycoats@reddit
Literally nothing but there’s something about Maneskin’s Beggin’ that instantly reminded me of it.
I think the bad name might have started with an S but I don’t know how confident I am even in that.
therealpopkiller@reddit
That song also reminded me of something I couldn’t put my finger on when I first heard it. Kinda reminded me of Reef, “Place Your Hands” but it’s just his voice is vaguely reminiscent
buffysmanycoats@reddit
I went on Spotify and listened to every band and song I could find hoping it would come to me. I feel like it was a European group but I’ve never been able to narrow it down. I wish I could even remember a lyric or something!
therealpopkiller@reddit
I know that feeling. This song popped in my head last week from back then and I cannot figure out what it is. I have a lyric, I have a basic melody for one part, but I posted in two different subs here and nobody has any clue. I also tried out local Facebook group thinking it might’ve been a local regional band when I grew up, but nobody seems to know what this is
buffysmanycoats@reddit
Dude, this conversation prompted me to just google it one more time for shits and giggles and I found this 4 year old reddit comment that solved this for. I was completely wrong about everything I thought I remembered about the band hahahaha.
I hope you have similar fortune.
therealpopkiller@reddit

Zealousideal_Dish494@reddit
They weren’t my first show, but they were my kids very first show (post reunion) at Levitt Pavilion in Denver.

Fun fact ska was invented by a Jamaican reggae band. We saw them in Albany a few years ago. They played for free, even. Brb, I'll get you their name. Because they rocked.
worksnake@reddit
Reggae comes after ska on the timeline, so it's not accurate to say a reggae band "invented" ska. Reggae did emerge from ska and they have very intertwined histories, especially before they left Jamaica.
bountiful_garden@reddit
So they lied to thousands of people when they said they invented ska? And it documented on YouTube and Google and other sources. But they lied, because you know better?
AFWolverine@reddit
No need to get defensive. That user isn't wrong. It may be that the band your referencing is claiming to have invented a version of ska? There's been several differing waves. Here's a pretty good article on the origins.
https://acousticmusic.org/research/history/musical-styles-and-venues-in-america/reggae-ska-and-rocksteady/?srsltid=AfmBOoqK9Kb0EXMuc9_n2KI7XAmTAu4lTmxwX6SINSdlPim7hyKMLkGk
worksnake@reddit
No, the innacurate part was calling them a reggae band I guess. Reggae didn't exist when ska came onto the scene. Maybe I'm not saying something right? Are you really arguing that reggae predated ska? That's just not true. That's all I'm saying.

Skank on!
card-board-board@reddit
Yeah I mean I had one good song in me. Back in the day the only band to outlast me was the Toasters. They showed up like they were ready to pull an 8 hour day.

Weirdly, it was my fault listening to all of that big band that got my dad swing dancing, which got his new pianist wife into jazz and now she does New Orleans style jazz a lot. Still love some Benny Goodman.
mysecretissafe@reddit
me: excited to go to a swing event at a local hotel that year.

ThomasSirveaux@reddit
I'll be honest, I never got into this stuff. I remember it being big in like, my junior year of high school. That year I was really into Garbage's Version 2.0, Offspring's Americana, Pearl Jam's Yield, and stuff like that. But I thought of ska as music for Old Navy commercials.
darthdelicious@reddit
I was literally in a ska band. We opened for the band (The Pietasters) that opened for these guys at a show. Greatest show we ever played. The Pietasters completely dominated the stage. It was hilarious. They had a smoke machine and lasers. MMBT just did a regular set. Also a good show but Pietasters were a surprisingly tough act to follow.

Obligatory plug for Joe Gittleman (the bass fiddlemans) work, both solo and with the Kilograms. Signature Bosstones sound sans Dicky Barrett.

One trend that I am 100% glad isn't making a comeback. I cannot believe this stuff was ever popular.

This plus that random resurgence of swing in the mid-late 90s.

Wasn’t there a ska band that had a dude that just danced on stage, played no instrument and didn’t sing?

I love the Mighty Mighty BossTones. My brother is six years older than me and he got me into them when I was a kid in the 1990’s. I’ll be 42 in October and he’ll be 48 in December. We both still listen to the Mighty Mighty BossTones.

The main reason I ever saw ska bands live was watching my friends punk bands lose to them at the Battle of the bands... Oh well, at least they beat the rap rock band.

Was never into ska, but it's cool to look back on.

I mean, my screen name is a Slow Gherkin song. I'm quite content saying I still have an occasional Ska present

Not specifically a past, it'll come up in context when I get the hankering.
