If you're just being a grammar pedant, bug off. If you actually don't know why outbound leg is worse, jetstream pushes east, often there's a pretty substantial headwind on the way, and a tailwind on the way back.
Sometimes I'll do a flight in MSFS from LA to Hawaii in Concorde and it's kinda funny when you pass by other airplanes like 20,000 ft below you and going half the speed
Airlines do use larger aircraft on some routes, United sends ten 777s per day to the islands. But those 300 flights a day are from 6 different airlines from 40 different cities to 4 different islands. Many of those city pairs are only 1 flight per day and usually don’t warrant equipment upguage.
The multiple Alaska flights on 737s are annoying. If you have that much demand... and since you own Hawaiian, why not use the A330s? The costs have to pencil out, and the experience would be so much more enjoyable for the passengers.
Well until last year all Alaska had was 737s. Now they inherited Hawaiians aircraft but also its route network, many of their the A330s still need to operate to Asia and the South Pacific. The 330s still run heavily to major west coast cities.
Move the Alaska mainline flights from the coastal cities (SEA, PDX, SFO, LAX, SAN, etc) to the Hawaiian fleet. And increase the use of wide bodies to serve those cities and provide a better service than is even remotely possible on a 737. However service to smaller airports, like PAE, can remain on AS mainline and use a 737.
I mentioned it in my other comment, but this is already basically what they do. There isn’t PAE-HNL service, but SFO/SAN/LAX/PDX/SEA/OAK-HNL all use at least one A330. Some of the bigger connectors like SEA and PDX use multiple. Then some longer flights like PHX/JFK-HNL do so as well. Smaller airports like SJC and BUR + off-peak frequencies use the A321s and 737s. The problem is there aren’t enough A330s for all of the missions. They also need one for HND/KIX/SYD/PPT-HNL international flights.
And where do all of these additional A330s come from? All of the cities you mentioned already have A330s flying there. If you want double the A330s on these routes they have to end service elsewhere.
The A330 current mission is to cover the void left when Alaska reassigned Hawaiian's 787s. Basically international flights and routes with high demand freight where a widebody is a requirement.
They only have 24 A330-200s, which are already deployed to routes that require the gauge or distance (e.g. SEA, LAX, PDX, JFK to HNL). Hawaiian decided to go in on 787s instead of expanding the A332 fleet, which is frankly too much plane for the Hawaii mission
In addition to the other points being raised about how new their widebody fleet is to them, and how early they are into merging their operations, I also want to ask: How is that annoying? Isn't there also a benefit of more/smaller flights, so that passengers have a lot more options for travel throughout the day, instead of shoring up all passengers from a given city into one or two flights? I think it would be especially important for people in the islands hoping for a not-terrible connection to their final destination once they're on the mainland.
If you do end up going ask the pilots or flight attendants if they have trading cards! Some pilots have trading cards for different aircraft and has different specs about each one on it. I found this out before going from VA-DEN-HI-CA-IL-VA managed to get 5 cards from my travels.they are cool to collect!
Talking to some of the pilots not all carry them since they have to purchase them themselves. Other airlines also have cards, delta for sure has cards but supplies them for the pilots at no cost. Hawaiian Airlines doesn't have any cards as of last summer. Never hurts to ask tho! Enjoy your travels!
i personally love the 757-200. it is often called “the sports car of the skies” because it has the highest power:weight ratio of any commercial passenger jet — it rips through the sky, and the takeoffs are a lot of fun.
it’s a narrow body jet though (only one aisle down the middle), so if you are traveling with kids, you might consider a different jet, as it can feel a bit claustrophobic for some on long routes.
huh. interesting. thank you for correcting me and I will edit my post. lie flat on that plane and route is one of my favorite commercial airliner routes. 🙌
ARTHUR: Chaps, my galley’s been burgled. They’ve taken the trolley, er, the duty free, the microwave, even the hot water boiler.
DOUGLAS: Sorry, Arthur, that was me. The lighter we keep the plane, the less fuel we need, so I’ve off-loaded all unnecessary dead weight. Speaking of which, how much do you weigh?

fresh_like_Oprah@reddit
Those triples and Hawaiian's A330s are about the only way a non-revver gets there anymore. A small single aisle to HNL is a miserable ride in coach.
Sasquatch-d@reddit
Not always. Last week I flew a completely full 777-300 HNL-SFO. 40 nonrevs left behind, not a single one got on.
Not caused by a cancellation either, it was full a week before I flew it.
It’s common for demand to far exceed available seats.
fresh_like_Oprah@reddit
The classic is you can get there but can't get back. These days I usually non-rev there and use miles for a real seat back.
There was a story that once NWA flew a 747 over just to get all the stranded non-revs back to work...don't know if it's true.
Sasquatch-d@reddit
I’ve heard that story before too but I’ve never verified if it’s true haha

Flying two 737s is cheaper than one 777.
The main advantage of flying 777s to Hawaii is the ability to carry additional cargo, not passengers.
