thank you dr med merdeauxfraises, but have you considered that coffein and other compounds in coffee stimulate the bowel and thats why for most people it makes them want to poop? if i or most people in the world had ibs wed get diarreha from coffee not just the urge to take a dumb

I actually am a doctor with a PhD specifically in gut health 😅 A single coffee shouldn’t be making you poop. If your bowel is that sensitive, it’s not regular. Men often are ashamed to discuss this or have normalized this among them but no food in a single, normal-sized portion should be sending you to the toilet within 30’. I’m not being a smartass or anything, the underdoagnosis of IBS in men is a big issue and bowel cancer stats are rising rapidly in young populations so leaving things untreated is not good.

What do you think is causing the uptick in bowel cancers? Just general inactivity due to smartphones? Low vitamin d levels because a lot of people rarely go outside? Ultra processed foods (probably more of a problem in America)?

Honestly, I strongly believe it should be kept alive as a tradition. Cup reading was so tightly tied to the move from girlhood to womanhood, and it is a practice the strengthen the sense of community and belonging.

While we obviously have moved on from actually believing this, I still think that it is a practice that must be kept alive.

This is not properly done. When you drink your coffee do not drink the last sip. Then swirl the coffee a bit to loosen the coffee grounds at the bottom. Put the coffee plate over the cup and carefully turn it over and the plate and the cup down. Wait for a few minutes while the coffee drips on the sides of the cup and in the plate (this is the time you gossip about the neighbourhood news).

Lift the cup carefully and start reading. Start from the opposite side of where the drinker drank the coffee. This is about things about further from the drinker (remote friends, acquaintances). As you move closer to the drinking point it becomes about close family and the drinker. From the top to the bottom of the cup it refers to the future. Top is about things about to happen, bottom is about more distant future. The darker the bottom the more ominous the future.

Then you start recognize patterns. Rivers are paths (literal or figurative). Bubbles and dots are news or rumours.
