To those who've been huge fans of music since the 80s, what's that song put out in the last few years that surprised you by triggering that 'put this banger on repeat' burst of excitement?
Posted by cherry-care-bear@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 378 comments
We're really lucky to have immediate access to music and songs from any genre anywhere on the planet, practically, right at our fingertips. I stopped listening much to the radio in like 2015 and just thought sticking to my faves from the 90s would have to do. But then I started listening to this one song, R-and-B out of the UK and I was blown away! My internal love for music burst into new bloom. And now I play some songs 12 times in a row just because; LOL.
iputmytrustinyou@reddit
“New Disease” and “Die for You” by From Ashes to New.
“Impose” and “Specter” by Bad Omens.
“Apologies” by Three Days Grace.
All of these songs have been released in the last year, and I listened to them obsessively waiting for the full albums. I find myself humming /singing each song daily. These are my anthems for 2026.
whither_wander_you@reddit
Saw AtN and TDG open fir Shinedown a couple years ago and DAMN DUDE what a good show they put on. All staples in our workout Playlist for sure, but just damn good music. I know its not a new song, but Riot is probably one of my absolute stop and stare songs ever!!!
iputmytrustinyou@reddit
Man, I am so envious - what a great line-up! I have never seen From Ashes to New or Shinedown. How are they in concert?
Three Days Grace was so much fun in concert! I finally got to see them last year with Breaking Benjamin. Riot had 45-year-old me jumping around like I was still in my twenties. The energy on stage was so great and the crowd was having a blast. My sister-in-law and I had so much fun she ended up getting us tickets to see them again this year.
whither_wander_you@reddit
we won tickets through the hubs work and it was amazing. all three bands we awesome live and I would gladly pay to see them all again!!!
whither_wander_you@reddit
When the Darkness Comes - Jeris Johnson (he also has a cover of Kiss From A Rose that I LOVE) Bang Bang Bang - AJR Maniac - Stray Kids artist is Arankai, and everything I've heard is straight 🔥

Anything by Ren Gill, Pete and Bas, or Stray Kids.

YES, Stray Kids. I got a super random recommendation for Maniac and I have not looked back! everything just an absolute banger!!

Falling In Reverse - Watch The World Burn
rythmicjea@reddit
Blinding Lights - The Weekend. Most of that album really. But that song really gives a synth pop vibe that just scratches the brain right.

It's the best 80s song that's not an 80s song.
Obi_Wan_Benobi@reddit
Starboy for me.

The album is sooooo good. I love After Hours the title track. Really shows off his vocal chops. I made a house remix of it:
https://on.soundcloud.com/bxtYltTotrmABNlt2f
rythmicjea@reddit
Yeah. Deep into lockdown I went out driving blasting the album and it got to this song and the cars around me all started vibing while we waited for the light to change. It was one of those really cool cinematic moments.
dryocopuspileatus@reddit
What is the album called? I’m only finding the single
rythmicjea@reddit
After Hours. Released in 2020. Starboy was also a good album. And his Super Bowl performance was really good too
Kiwi_lad_bot@reddit
Ooh thats a great choice!
OoT-TheBest@reddit
It is a banger for sure, but experienced it at the gym on repeat. After 3rd listen it was obnoxious. Still love it though, when it pops up.

Olivia Rodrigo - Good for You. So many Veruca Salt vibes.
imalasagnahogama@reddit
I’m old man that yells at clouds guy, but when I heard vampire by her I liked it immediately. She’s got a good vibe.
rengregory@reddit
If you're starting at Vampire, you're going to enjoy the journey. She clearly has so many '90s modern/alternative rock infuences.
Cold_Appearance_3702@reddit
You beat me to it. Like a damn SOCIOPATH! 🤘🤘🤘
C_est_la_vie9707@reddit
She has so many awesome songs with 90s influence.
Scooter_McGavin_9@reddit
When people are surprised to learn this old man likes Olivia Rodrigo I tell them she makes 80's power ballads and 90's alt-rock which is my sweet spot. I am looking forward to her third album coming out next month.
C_est_la_vie9707@reddit
Chappelle is 80s, Olivia is 90s. They have the same producer so maybe that's why.
Scooter_McGavin_9@reddit
I would argue Driver's License and Vampire are more in the vein of 80's power ballads than anything in the 90's (outside of November Rain).
CTMechE@reddit
Yes.
I'm more of a Xennial but I have never felt more seen than when this article popped up a couple yrs ago:

bakedveldtland@reddit
Love her and Chappell Roan so much. They both caught me totally off guard, I wasn’t expecting punk/alt energy from those two little pop girls. Total breaths of fresh air.
MFDoooooooooooom@reddit
Fuck, I completely agree! She came on my Spotify radio and I had no idea who she was and I was enjoyed the shit out of her. I'm vaguely aware she's quite famous now, but whatever. That shit is just straight up good fun music.
IAmNotAPersonSorry@reddit
bad idea right? has me in a chokehold right now. I’ve been trying to figure out why I like her so much lately and it’s totally the Veruca Salt sound.
MFDoooooooooooom@reddit
Yes absolutely! That's the song that grabbed me, too.
IAmNotAPersonSorry@reddit
The all-strings cover they use in Bridgerton is really great too, if that’s your jam.

Plus, pretty much anything Kendrick touches, especially the Black Hippy era ('Control' is phenomenal).
I'm pretty much exclusively into hip hop, and I've discovered a ton of newer artists through their guest appearances on tracks by the old guard of my youth. Busta Rhymes and T Pain are particularly good in this regard.
Then there's the tracks by youngsters, featuring OG rappers, so that's another way I've discovered newer artists. Eg, Conway the Machine had Ludacris on 'Scatterbrain', Denzel had T Pain on 'Troubles'.

Bad Bunny Tití Me Preguntó and a lot of his other songs. I am musically trained and anything trap doesn't really get me in music quality feels, but the compositions of his songs are so bizarre, fun, with a great melding of old and new (with obvious appreciation for lots of musical and lyrical influences). I like it.

pug_fugly_moe@reddit
The best band I’ve ever seen in person, and I’ve been to A LOT of shows.
You can tell they love their job. There is nothing they would rather be doing in that moment than playing to an audience. Many bands don’t convey that, and they convey it even more than most bands that do.

For the first time in years, I had to completely stop what I was doing (no 'second screen viewing' or staring at the phone or doing something else) just to immerse myself in the brilliance of this song. I replayed it about five or six times in a row upon first listen. That song gave me the same sensation of listening to Hurt by NIN or Nutshell by Alice in Chains for the first time. I'd forgotten what that sensation feels like. Stylistically, her music is a bit like Tangerine Dream with vocals. It's so hypnotic.
Here's the full performance if anyone is interested in hearing it:

Caught her tour last year in LA. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Esja holds a special place for me, but all her albums are great.
Nostalgia and Ghosts are on regularly these days.

I generally stick to rock/metal but I love all music. The newest song on repeat for me lately is Ella Langley Choosing Texas. Its very old school country and I can't get enough of it.
_EvilD_@reddit
Mannequin Pussy - I’ve Got Heaven. The whole album. Has some Hole vibes but a bit heavier. On repeat for me for months.
1b - Tropical Fuck Storm - Braindrops. Perfect Aussie band. Somehow even without the accent you can tell they’re Aus. Has some B-52’s vibes.

Transports me straight back to the 90s. I can't put my finger on the influence, but it's definitely there

I don't know if it came out very recently but "High Priced Shoes" by the rapper Prof. It's vibin' like a rap "Don't Stop Me Now" lol. I've also been exploring a prog band from England called Henge. Both songs were viral in my YT shorts feed, and when I explored these artist's libraries they have nothing but bangers.

I know a lot of people don’t like them, but I agree. They’re not metal as it is today, but they have so many good songs that are kind of like successors to 80s glam rock

edasto42@reddit
I make a top 50 every year since 2016 so I can stay on top of new music and every year there’s amazing stuff.
Every year a Charli XCX song has made a top 50, except 2025 (she didn’t put anything new out).
The artist Hatchie has made my top 50 a few times. Her song ‘Stay With Me’ was on repeat for awhile.
Only Child by Tierra Whack is fun af
Sweet Spot by Kim Petras seems like a leftover Daft Punk track that just bops
Future Love by Ride is on par with anything from the 90’s they put out
Pale Waves and the The xx’s first couple albums are classics. Also Jamie xx’s first solo album has some great ones.
I can go on and on. I listen to more new music than old stuff and am pretty aware of what’s going on. Basically I can look at any festival lineup and not be bewildered at who is on the lineup.

Mary on a Cross was my gateway drug but Impera was the album that hooked me. I have never fallen in love so hard and so fast with a band as I did with Ghost. It ticks every box of my classic heavy rock tastes and my GOD, does Forge have range as a songwriter.
