Interesting how fast some people change once they hear ebike

Riding around a lake near me earlier today, I stopped for a break and someone came over to ask what kind of bike I was riding. They seemed pretty interested at first, said it looks good, but once I said it was Venus, an ebike, the energy kind of dropped. The vibe I got was basically, "Oh, we're not really in the same lane." I'm not mad about it, I just find it kind of...interesting. But anyway, I still love mine and it feels really nice to ride in such nice weather:)
Illustrious-Can-7482@reddit
lol same energy when I walk into a job for the first time. They’ll see my motorcycle helmet and ask what kind of bike do you have? Once I say e bike it’s game over lol

legit made me snort. was like oi blame the law, I'd wear a furry head instead.

Someone passed me on the road and yelled at me “that’s cheating!”
He yelled it from a car…
People just seem to be so ready to shit on ebikes
Wales147@reddit
I get that too. Yells get a car! Iv got two on the drive at home but I hate driving so I ebike it to work everyday. Nothing comes close to riding home at 6am off a night shift when the sun is just coming up
Vast_Yak_9709@reddit
I got 1 better getting off @4a.m. with no traffic whatsoever

god I love this lol. The fresh air, sound of crickets, extended maneuverability/360 vision, as long as you have a goated ass battery, god couldn't have created a more glorious combo.

Pretty-Yam-2854@reddit
This kinda doofus guy that is in one of the clubs as an officer at my campus and is in a handful of my classes who is sometimes nice to me told me it was cheating 😭 bro im just trying to enjoy my eMTB.
mmeiser@reddit
You have to remember that a significant portion if the population drivers their cars everywhere with no self awareness and what's worse these people call themselves "bicyclists". I should know, I used to be one of them. Now I am whatever to the concepts of what they call "bicycling". Bro I stole about 5000 miles a year from my car. I still road bike and fat bike and mtb with imunity and maintain the same shape as ever without doing "training rides". It is fucking cheating. My "base" from commuting to work is such that I need very little high stamina riding to maintain my "edge". It's all about the cardio. It's still all about the cardio. I also xc ski, snowshoe, backpack and paddle. My passion is multi day travel by anything but car. My oersonal records are 350 miles in 48 hour on meat bike and 267 with 27000 vertical feet in 34 hours by ebike. I love that eniking has emoowered me to tour with imunity in the appalachian foothills of my home state. I have a personal love of riding every single gravel road and finding every 12% or better grade. Eco mode on my mtb is billygoat mode, anything more is just more fun. It allows me to aovid spiking my heart rate into zone four and five which allows me to ride for 10-12 hour stretches without as much fatigue.
ASS_LIGHTBULB@reddit
Bish whet?
mmeiser@reddit
For some reason my autocorrect turned impunity into imunity twice. i fixed a couple other mistypes and now it makes some sense but f-ck it. The point was lost.
dirtcamp17@reddit
User-2550@reddit (OP)
Yeah exactly. I'm just choosing a way to get around and exercise that actually works for me. I don't really see how that's cheating. My ebike makes riding much easier to stick with, especially with all the little hills around here.

I was locking my ebike up at the supermarket and a guy on a normal pushy rode past and yelled "Cheat". I was like "Ok" he then turned around and came back and says "I called you a cheat because yours is electric" I replied "um ok cool" he stared at me for like 10 seconds then rode off. He was a little bogan cunt with a mullet in a wife beater I just racked it up to jealousy lol.

"Bro reading on e-book isn't reading"
cool, didn't ask. I will ask though, when's the last time you even read a book physical or otherwise?
The amount of gate keepers in every hobby is high, but honestly most gate keepers I run into aren't even part of the hobby, it's just filthy casuals with strong opinions
Sensitive_Paper2471@reddit
i tried ebooks, realised print is cheaper (second hand purchases) and went back.
gnarfleeze@reddit
Ebooks are free if you just sail the seven seas. No real ethical conundrum if you're already buying second hand since the author and publisher already see no money from your purchase.
Your other option is to use libby which allows you to take out ebooks as a loan from your local library, Kobo e-readers can certainly connect to it but I think in certain places modern kindles can too.
outdatedboat@reddit
Once upon a time, there was a website with free downloads for any ebook or audio book you could imagine.
I'm fairly certain the site was shut down due to legal reasons. But, man... It was amazing while it lasted.
It's a little more difficult now. But, still pretty simple to get free ebooks/audio books.
webre@reddit
I still have a friend named Anna, boy she has an archive
Burn_u_up@reddit

I was gifted a used kindle and its a bit complicated to send such seven seas sourced ebooks there and the reading experience on an older kindle to me is worse than an actual book somehow
AnonUser3216@reddit
Libraries have ebooks for free.
outdatedboat@reddit
You didn't look/try nearly hard enough. Ebooks are ALWAYS going to be the cheaper option. If you know where to look.
They're free to those who know.
YobaiYamete@reddit
Yeah the price is high if you don't "obtain" them. Usually what I do is buy hardcovers for my shelves then find one of the many ways to get them for free. You can often use your local library card to rent them

Where do you live where this is a problem? Here in Sweden e-bikes are normal. Basically the only people commuting on manual bikes are the Lycra covered middle age dudes with questionable sunglasses.
BIG_SCIENCE@reddit
North America is the only place that hates bicycles and associates it with being homosexual or a weak bitch
Cuntonesian@reddit
What if you bring your AR-15 on your bike?
BIG_SCIENCE@reddit
Thats an easy answer. Then youre a homosexual with an AR-15 on an e-bike. You can't put truck nuts on an ebike. You can't "roll coal" on an ebike???
whats it good for? just transportation???
Cuntonesian@reddit
I’ve got two evokes, an e-scooter, an electric moped, electric car. Even my stove and heating are electric. I recycle everything. I’m basically the gayest man alive. My wife and kids are a front.

kashuntr188@reddit
I'm guessing it's north America. US and Canada people have a weird view of what bike riding should be.
Ill_Cheetah_1991@reddit
I have only had that once, said seriously anyway, since getting mine in 2011
At the time I was on the home run of a 20 miles ride starting and finishing at home
The bloke that said it was loading his clean MTB onto the back of his car - parked at the side of a canal
Thing about ebikes is that doing 20 miles 3 times a week on an ebike is worth more than 2 5 miles rides a month on a "normal" bike
If you do 20 miles 3 times a week ona normal bike then great - but I can't (or wouldn't anyway) so it is better to do what I can on an ebike in very low power levels
Powerful-Ice-4579@reddit
They hate them until they get one. I've seen it.
drkodos@reddit

I think the oil/gas/car cartel is terrified of ebikes and the like. There's an active misinformation campaign to prevent us from saving tons of money that typically goes to them for transportation

Wales147@reddit
I commute to work on my ebike, there's a 2mile climb of over 500ft. If i didn't have my ebike I'd take my car. No way would I attempt that on a normal bike
Straight-Month269@reddit
Same. 9 mile commute with 1000ft of climb either direction.
Wales147@reddit
Yep that's no fun on a regular bike when you then have to work all day
Putrid-Magazine-3001@reddit
I love when people say stuff like this to me. I just ask them the difference between a cadence and a torque sensor. If they dont know then I tell them they dont know enough about ebikes to talk about them.
analogpenetrations@reddit
Yep. Dealt with it. My ebike is a cargo bike tho.
I have it kinda decked out with cool parts that are more conventional bike parts- LOOK pedals, Surly Bars, Brooks saddle, Paul Components stem...
So as much as they might wanna be uninterested... The "coolness" of my parts always makes a bike snob give it a 2nd chance.
GetOffMy3Inches@reddit
Had a city bus get mad I passed him so he was flooring it in the bus with everyone on board lmao I was able to beat him till the part where the bike lane ended and it was clear he won't gonna stop so I just went to the side walk lol then flew passed him at the light.

TheFakeSociopath@reddit
The problem is that the term "ebike" is not only used to describe actual ebikes anymore, but pedal-less electric motorcycles as well. Therefore, people interested in human-powered bikes lose interest when they suspect that you can just push a button to go forward without any effort.
S0PRAN0OO3@reddit
I recently bought an ebike and it changed my life. Im almost 50 and working to get in shape. Yes motor is helping me but I am absolutely peddling the entire time. I haven't been so excited to ride a bike since I was 5! Fk the haters.
neverfakemaplesyrup@reddit
The weird thing is Americans especially just seem devoted to the idea that cycling is either a toy or a sport. If you're an adult, the only reason to bike is as a sport. So they see ebikes as cheating. Its silly.
You even see it with motorcycles- an otherwise fuel efficient practical method of transport- deemed as dangerous toys.
I've even had arguments with Cyclists (tm) over protected bike lanes. They argued Real Cyclists can easily go as fast as cars, so they don't need sidewalks or lanes. And if you can't go that fast, you're not a Real Cyclist.
Substantial-Oil-7050@reddit
Unbelievable!
anonlite@reddit
personally i take pride in ebikes being separate from other bikes categories lol
Necessary-Break5978@reddit
Some people think it's cheating because you can ride faster because you have a motor, some of us do have medical condition that makes riding a normal bike difficult, having a ebike makes getting around a lot easier
kashuntr188@reddit
In other words you are cheating. Hahaha.
People that ride bikes can get super arrogant about it.
Jjayguy23@reddit
So, in other words, people need to mind their own business and allow others to enjoy their lives. It’s so simple, but people love to be divisive.
kashuntr188@reddit
Not in the same lane.... Of riding bikes?
For real. Bike riders are very arrogant. Just go in any sub of a city and see how intense bike riders get.
Yes our infrastructure is bad for biking, but a lot of the times they aren't helping the conversation. It's like when I once told bike riders they shouldn't wear black at night when riding and I got told that they should wear whatever and it is the cars that should see them. True, but why not make it extra obvious for drivers? Why not do your best to increase your own safety.
People that ride their bikes can really be unreasonable
ThisShine5865@reddit
I ride a heavy, scooter like ebike used it to commute recently to work over winter and sometimes I do food delivery on it for some extra money.
I also ride a drop bar road bike for sport and enjoyment.
And last summer I did lots of riding and even bikepacking on a folding brompton bike.
They are all different but they are all great things. People just need to learn how to enjoy different things... As long as you follow the rules on the road and ride sensibly it's all good.
Rubes2525@reddit
That's the funny part, I've never seen one ebike rider follow the rules at all. They are always zooming past with blatant disregard for pedestrians, other bikes, and cars alike. And people wonder why there is a snobbery against them.
hept_a_gon@reddit
I've never seen... blah blah blah
Lies!
greybeard1363@reddit
You haven't seen me. Ebikes are not allowed on sidewalks near me. But, because of heavy speeding traffic near my house, for the first block or so, I use the sidewalk for safety. When I see a pedestrian on the walk ahead, I will pull off onto the grass and wait for them to pass or ride around them on the grass slowly. I moved onto the grass yesterday when a kid on a fat tire emoto came speeding toward me. He looked surprised.
tokin247@reddit
You haven't seen me 😊. A lot of us ride with courtesy and respect when around other people, dogs, kids etc... anytime people are in a path I slow down quite a bit when I pass. Fingers are always over the brakes until I'm clear. Can't paint everyone with the same brush. There are always going to be bad apples that bring negative outlooks to the activity. (I blame e-motos)
AreWe_TheBaddies@reddit
This. My ebike is for commuting and errands. My acoustic bike is for weekend fun and exercise.
Grawlix_TNN@reddit
How did you find doing deliveries? I'm considering doing door dash for a bit of extra cash too.
ThisShine5865@reddit
So from my perspective here in the UK, it's a decent part time thing for a bit of extra income. Wouldn't do it full time, it's super unreliable. Earnings depend on time, weather and how many other riders are around. There is also loads of people doing it who accept any crappy job even if it makes no sense financially.
hept_a_gon@reddit
That's because they haven't ridden an ebike before.
wturber@reddit
I ride both kinds. I've always liked bikes. All kinds. And people who also like bikes get an immediate bonus point in my book. And if they ride regularly, they get one or two more bonus points. I suppose I'm a bit of a snob in that way. :\^)
FewStill3958@reddit
E bikes are great. I'm researching them now to replace my ancient REI Novarro.
The only thing that chaps my ass is occasional bad behavior by riders who want to treat hiking trails like motocross events. Please don't run me over and go easy with the throttle to avoid ripping up the trail. That's all that needs to happen for us all to be able to hold hands and sing Kumbaya.
AdFeeling6882@reddit
Is it possible that you’re hiking on OHV trails?
FewStill3958@reddit
Nope.
I think a lot of these might be Emotos that I mistook for Ebikes though.
AdFeeling6882@reddit
I have an Emoto, I see ALOT of kids riding them now. You’d likely know if it was en Emoto though. The chain/motor makes them pretty loud and they look exactly like dirtbikes. If you’re seeing an Emoto on a trail that is clearly marked non motorized then it’s probably teens that don’t really represent the e-bike/Emoto community. There is a lot of young kids ruining it for the rest of us adults who use Emotos responsibly.
FewStill3958@reddit
I don't blame the kids. They aren't the ones buying them. The parents who let them run wild with what's the equivalent of a small displacement dirt bike are jackasses for sure.
When I was young there were a handful of kids I knew who were responsible and were allowed to use quads on private property unsupervised. They were the exception though. Nobody let there kids run wild on busy streets and parks like I see now. Sure, riding a pocket bike in the desert ain't likely to hurt anyone. That's not what riles me though.
My most shitty encounter was a young adult who almost ran over my 3 yo godson on a nature path in a park that doesn't even allow bicycles. It took a phenomenal amount of self control not to grab and slam that dipshit.
AdFeeling6882@reddit
I don’t blame you lol. I would have done the same. In my area(Reno, NV) there’s a lot of mountains and BLM land. So a lot of the trails are mixed where there is OHV trails and then a lot of small trails that branch off of them that are MTB/ hiking trails only. I run into a lot of people that try giving me shit for riding my Emoto on what they thought was a hiking trail when it clearly isn’t(even though I go very slow when passing them). Even had a dude try and run In front of my bike after jumping from behind a bushy area. I think the issue is there’s a very large amount of misinformation out there on a very new market. Parents buying kids them thinking they are ok since they are electric(some parents obviously know better). Kids going out doing bad shit behind their parent’s backs. There are kids riding them to my son’s elementary school almost daily. So basically not even the schools know that they aren’t meant to be ridden on public roadways. Anyways, my point is that the people you have these issues with definitely aren’t law abiding motorists, and you should 100% call the police on them. They ruin it for the rest of us because we all get grouped into the same category a lot of times, and when legislation catches up with the market they will over regulate as they always do. I have several e-bikes that I ride responsibly with my kids. I have an Emoto that I ride responsibly, and I hate to see the general public look at PEVs more negatively than they already do. Good day, friend 🍻.
FewStill3958@reddit
I'm in Oregon, so very few OHV except the coastal sand dunes and out in the high desert. It's mostly the urban interface stuff that gets a little out of hand around here. Portland is still a little wild. If I actually got the police to show up for a someone being stupid on a trail I'd have to buy a lotto ticket for sure.
I hear you though. It sounds like you're a good steward. Some people get weird no matter how hard you try to be polite.

I got my first ebike one week ago. We bought it to pull the kids trailer and my daily commute. For that intent it works marvellous. I live in a windy area and not having to fight headwind after a 12,5h shift at the hospital is a game changer.
But for any sportive use my hardtail is faster, lighter and my fully is way more fun to ride offroads.
Imo bikes have their very own niches and usecases nowadays. They "one for all usecases" bike doesn't exist and you have to find the one that fits your niche. Or find the n+1 one to find all your niches. I am at 4 and 3 frames sitting in storage and waiting for reconstruction.

In the last six years, I've seen a change as more people from the traditional cycling world are accepting e-bikes.
There are also several cyclists I know who say they will never touch an e-bike themselves, but they are not against them. They recognize that e-bikes get more people on a bicycle in the outdoors and, in some ways, can also slightly reduce the amount of cars on the road.

With crossed arms if you're good enough
Lucidlie@reddit
I ride an euc nowadays so I'll pass them backwards with my arms crossed just for you
redditorialy_retard@reddit
Hahaha I can pass them on my ebike while dancing or arms cross. We can tell them that the flesh is weak and machine unyielding

People are hateful about everything these days. The most disturbing part is they're taking it out on the little guy. Every ebike rider is essentially the little guy.

There’s definitely a real frustration underneath comments like this, especially around how polarized things feel online. But it’s also worth separating online noise from everyday reality.

I mean I get out and touch grass a lot myself. I see it in reality too. Often there's a flat out disregard for life. It's very disturbing.

Eh, least they weren't mean about it, all the same purists of all kinds suck. Even saw a video about one who is kinda responsible for why biking infrastructure sucks so bad in America. https://youtu.be/pRPduRHBhHI

"Motor shaming" bigots
Dismal_Minute809@reddit
Have met that kind of people too. I just kinda ignore it. Your ebike is pretty! How's it been riding around your area?

People are different, why care?
