Which car would you pick for 35k?
Posted by MarchTop6194@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 311 comments
I grew up loving cars, I’m in my early twenties and I am looking for a very fun car that won’t need repairs every few months (previous car was a nightmare Audi). Budget is \~35k and I look for a depreciation sweet spot of 30-60k miles.
Turns out there’s over twenty cars that fit that criteria for me
I want to know what you all would pick in my shoes:
* 2017–2020 Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400
* 2016–2019 Chevrolet Camaro LT1 / SS
* 2022–2024 Toyota GR86 / Subaru BRZ
* 2018–2022 Ford Mustang GT
* \~2017 BMW M240i / 340i / 440i
* 2008–2013 Chevrolet Corvette C6 base
* 2019–2021 Genesis G70 3.3T
* 2018–2022 Kia Stinger GT
* 2022–2024 Hyundai Elantra N
* 2010–2020 Nissan 370Z nismo
* 2009–2012 Porsche Cayman base
* 2020–2023 Cadillac CT4-V
* 2019–2022 BMW X3 M40i
* 2010–2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS (5th Gen)
* 2014–2018 Jaguar F-Type base
* 2017–2020 Mercedes-Benz SLC 43 AMG
* 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost
* 2023 Toyota GR Corolla
* \~2011-2015 Cadillac CTS-V, ATS-V
* \~2018 Ford Focus RS
* \~2023 Nissan Z base

I had one... The hype just didn't live up to anything.
It was slow, cramped, and just not anything honestly special.
I replaced it with a C5 Z06 that was 1,000% more fun.
Khoanigsegg@reddit
Have you driven one at the limit? The consensus and through experience, it’s one of the best drivers car around that price range. Front mid engine, double wishbone, very very lively motor, and engaging gearbox. Even stock it’s great. Once you set one up properly it’s very hard to beat for the money.
PrometheanEngineer@reddit
Yeah, and it was totally "fine"
It was the fastest autocross car I've had, but it wasn't nearly as fun as a bunch of other cars I've owned
My C5 Z06, blob eye STI, and even my MS3 were all more actual fun.

S2000 will be my choice also, such a good car for the money.
But from his list I will pick the New Z in performance for the rear LSD or the C6 Corvette in manual 08+ for the LS3, those are fun cars but the harmonic balancer has to be replace no matter the mileage, the factory ones wobble after not many miles.

Not a fan of BMW or Mercedes but this is a pretty solid list. EERIELY similar to the cars I was cross shopping before I got the GR86. If you can head to a CARMAX if available in your area and try test driving some of these. But for me it came down to the GR86, Focus RS, Jaguar F Type and Lexus RC F. And the only reason I didn't get the other 3 is because used they all costed more than a brand new GR86. And Toyota offered me a unheard of interest rate in this economy so I couldn't say no to that.

Dont know your financial status, but i recently was in the same boat. Had the same budget and considered/test drove a lot of the same cars that are on your list. Is it gonna be your only car? Don’t forget to also factor in mpg, practicality, insurance cost, repair cost, etc. I ended up picking up an older brz for way under my budget, only 10k.
DJScaryTerry@reddit
Out of what you listed, the cars that will be the most fun while having the least repair bills and, most importantly, not get you killed are
370z, Elantra N, brz/86 (I think they fixed the oiling issue)
undarant@reddit
A friend of mine recently sold his Elantra N and bought a 981 Cayman S. He's a proper driver, did quite a few track days in his EN. And he said that one of the biggest things he retrospectively learned after getting the Porsche was just how good the Elantra N actually is. After he had the reference point of daily-ing a car that's better in every way, he said it was shocking how solid the EN would perform in hindsight.
OP, do with that information what you will.
Ghost_with_no_name@reddit
I have a year left on my lease and I’ve been reading so much about the Elantra N that I can’t wait to at least test drive one, let alone buy one
undarant@reddit
They're pretty amazing cars. I think too many people get hung up on the "but it's still a Hyundai" thing. I think the Elantra N is Hyundai's serious first step in kind of restoring their name. It's not perfect, but it's a car that changes the landscape of cars at its price point.
JMPhotographik@reddit
Oiling issue doesn't appear to be fixed, but I just picked up a new GR86, so I guess I'll find out in a few thousand miles. I'm still 100% planning to pull the pan at 5k miles at least to check.
drpepperfan69420@reddit
the oiling issue is mostly about people who tracked their cars. If you're daily driving your GR86 like a civilized human being, it'll be fine
sssozi@reddit
Not an issue. I drove mine for 40k in 1.5 years. No issue.
Indication5151@reddit
It’s not an issue I assure you. Just half quart overfill and call it a day.
DJScaryTerry@reddit
If you must continuously add oil to your brand new car to keep it alive, you have a problem.
Ancient_Manner_2650@reddit
They don’t burn oil…the oiling issue is just mitigated a little by overfilling the engine with oil, something that is very common on track cars.
DJScaryTerry@reddit
I thought the new ones had an issue with oil consumption not the same oil starvation in corners the old one had? Am I mistaken?
Ancient_Manner_2650@reddit
I didn’t even know the first generation had that issue
But no, no oil consumption issues just oil pressure from taking hard turns on one side, forgot if it’s left or right lol.
fcwolfey@reddit
The first gen issue was people putting R compounds on for track days without upgrading their oiling system with baffles and they would drop pressure in high G corners. For normal street driving it wasn’t a real problem
JMPhotographik@reddit
Nope. No consumption, but starvation and the "RTV issue" are still a thing.

100% the 370z. Some antisway bars is all it needs for the canyons.
morganlandt@reddit
If you’re suggesting the Ecoboost Mustang why not the RS? Same power plant with AWD and a manual. Plus the limited run of them lowers depreciation.
DJScaryTerry@reddit
Because of the many issues they had, including lifting the head. There are quite a few things a seller can hide, just not a really safe buy.
The EcoBoost mustang he wants is a newer one and doesn't have the same issues. Totally different revision of the engine.
Pinkys_Revenge@reddit
As an ex-370Z owner, if you want to get serious with it, make sure there are good solutions for camber adjustments and the shitty rear differential. When I had mine (when they were new) there weren’t any good aftermarket solutions yet and it kinda sucked.

On the list you provided the Gen 2 CTS-V is probably one of the best options. I have 1 (2012 sedan) with full bolt ons, + E85 since 35k miles. 680 HP at the wheel. 120k miles now and only thing I ever have to do is change spark plugs, and fluids (includes diff fluid).
My friend also has one that he did the same full bolt ons + a cam + E85 and his is close to 200k miles now and he has had zero major issues as well. Pretty much same maintenance items as me but he has had to change some worn out suspension parts by this mileage point in his.
Find a stock one with good maintenance records and you should be golden.

Lotus Elise will bring more smiles per gallon than any car on this list
laylowlazlo@reddit
I’ll give you a breakdown of your list from my perspective having sold most of these cars.
Infiniti Red Sport 400 - Pass due to turbo issues with those motors amongst other things
Camaro LT1/SS - Cool to get the Corvette motor, I would not settle for LT1 over SS. I would pass though due to very high theft rate, you just hear about it less because the Mopar community is much more vocal and larger
GR86/BRZ - Compared to most other cars on this list you are getting half the car for twice the price. The GR86 experience really isn’t so far off what an original Scion FRS provides for $12K
Mustang GT - Good bang for your buck but not special and will depreciate. I see GT’s as regular traffic, especially when GT350’s exist for not a whole lot more
M2/3/440i range - The motors are known to be reliable, and this is being told by their values which have spiked once this became known. However, you will wish you got the true M experience VS M-lite. You are in F80 territory, get the M3/M4
Genesis G70 3.3T - Quick but numb. Still wary of engines past 50K miles. Will depreciate hard like any other Korean car, they are not immune
Stinger GT - Same complaint as G70, quick but numb. Still has Kia issues and Kia depreciation
Elantra N - Just no, not in the same vain as the other cars on your list. Replace with Civic Si or better yet Civic Type R.
370Z Nismo - Cool car with good platform that will hold its value. Does suffer from high theft rates
Porsche Cayman Base - Good car but not worth getting over the S
Cadillac CT4-V - America’s latest answer to the M3 is pretty cool from what I hear, but I can only judge off the ATS-V sedan’s I have driven. Theft can be a concern just like it is for Camaros
X3 M40i - This car only makes sense if you are looking for a compromise. Judging by the other cars on this list, this doesn’t seem to be the case so I don’t understand why you would want to consider this over an M340i, in which case the same complaints still apply
Camaro SS 5th Gen - See earlier Camaro notes
Jaguar F-Type - Not the car if you don’t like dealing with reliability issues. With the way Jaguar was/is setup, think of them as basically Land Rover Coupes and Sedans. They use the same engines, transmissions, and a lot more components. Suffers from the same depreciation as Land Rover cars as well
Mercedes SLC 43 AMG - Like my notes on M340i, I am against lite versions of cars. AMG means V8, you know it does
Mustang EcoBoost - You will wish you got the V8. Do not consider, this is the Mustang for people who don’t care about cars
GR Corolla - Cool car, interesting motor, only time will tell how they hold up. Good depreciation curve being a Toyota, but at the end of the day you are still in a Corolla
Cadillac CTS- V, ATS-V - Yes and Yes, 2 distinctly different engines that live up to the V name. Be wary of high theft rates
Ford Focus RS - can have reliability issues, hard to find not thrashed
Nissan Z base - not a special car in my eyes
I would highly consider a Lotus Elise. They can be very reliable with the Toyota 2ZZ setup and you will have a truly special car. I speak from experience!

Wow #1 comment, thank you for this
KoenigseggAgera@reddit
Since you’re considering its competitors, you may consider an Acura TLX A-Spec.
norwegiangreen@reddit
I was going to suggest the Acura TLX! I’m in my mid-20s similar to OP. I’ve first learned to drive in a 2017 Honda CRV. I also had a 2021 Passport for 2 years. I really loved the Honda experience and the reliability, but being young I wanted a sporty, sexy car. The CRV is the opposite of that. The Passport is just so excessive for a single guy.
I looked into Acura as it’s the luxury/performance wing of Honda. I loved the TLX higher refinement and quality interior and exterior, in addition to the same reliability as Honda. Personally, I find Acuras to be more sporty looking and better for a younger person than Lexus (I think the stereotype is Lexus = older person car). The 2021+ Acura TLX in any trim has a undeniably sexy exterior.
I just got a 2021 Acura TLX Advance with 41k miles. I had to pounce on it quickly because the Advance seems to be a very rare trim and I liked the extra luxury touches over anything extra sporty.
Coming from a compact and midsize crossover, I don’t mind the size of the TLX at all. Really the TLX is a midsize sedan. It has serious road presence, despite being a sedan. I don’t feel unsafe driving it, as it’s around 4,000lbs. Trunk is a very good size and fit my CRV trunk weather mat perfectly. The rear seats are extremely comfortable and plush, but legroom might be tight for people over 6 feet tall. The second row is absolutely useable, despite what some things I saw online. The front row is extremely comfortable and spacious, I actually enjoy the touchpad because fingerprints on my previous touchscreens used to bother me a lot.

I quite literally could not think of a dumber answer than this. You like hatchbacks and you like wagons. Wagons are rare and that's fine, the definition does not need to be expanded simply because you don't find them very often.

C7 base in manual really is the whole package. What’s great car. If I wasn’t a sucker for MR2’s I’d be saving for one.
PossibilityTotal191@reddit
Mr2s are nice and yes manual is the way, sadly because of how much i drive for work plus how much traffic im always in and because of the 2 options i found when i get my c7 z06 it will be auto :/ sad but at least its still a z06
pieindaface@reddit
Idk man. There are worse places for traffic, but driving in the DC area in a manual is not bad at all.
Even then, I found there is practicality of having a cheap reliable automatic car. I drive my MR2 whenever I want. Work, grocery run, date night, whatever. If I don’t want to, I just drive the Camry. It gets better gas mileage and is quiet and easy to drive. Don’t compromise on your 10% car just so it can be your 99% car. Unless you only live in the city and only have space for 1 car, you won’t want to drive it everyday anyway.

I had a 2007 S4 but the 4.2 v8 motors where trash, absolute hell hole I got myself into. Young and dumb. 15k in debt and needed a new 5k motor. I learned how to put a motor in a car tho at 18 🤣
Now I’m onto a 2021 A4 45 Premium Plus, it’s using the tried and true EA888gen4 motor, same EA888 platform as what’s in the Golf R’s, and I’ve been seeing nothing but praise as the only weak spot is the water pump around 60k going out. Other than that, some 2019 and 2020 A4’s I’ve seen it 250k already surprisingly. Fingers crossed for myself hahaha

They had what seems to be creative names for pretty much all the big 3, some survivors for sure, but that was a boat station wagon the was supposed to make you feel like you were an estate owner cruising around checking on things with 12 kids in the back and standard luggage racks that would come in handy for going on vacation at your other estate properties. Could also handle a couple of Coffins in the back by collapsing the seats if you were leaving your estate for the other side. Then we got mini vans and that's pretty much what got us where we are today with the invention of the SUV that covers a lot of what the wagons and vans did, but not quite the same flair in there names. Country Squire really makes you connect with the theme. Ok I will STFU now.

The only vehicle on that list that might be trouble free is the corolla.

Craziest part of this list is how old you’ve gotta go on a lot of these models to get them down to $35k….. seems like yesterday some of these were $35k new. Nice list tho. Good luck choosing!

Fifth gen Camaro is the answer. Great looks, great power, reliable, and even has a backseat. Don’t even bother with the Toyota 86/BRZ…a civic si would smoke you.
Temporary-Chest-3111@reddit
Having just bought a 3.0si, I’d suggest a Z4M Coupe if you’re not a roadster person. Hydraulic steering, S54, manual transmission and quite a bit of traditional BMW character.
Also, if it’s a weekend car are first gen Lotus Elises available where you are? They’re hitting just about 35k USD here these days.

The c6 corvette is a stout choice. Probably one of the most raw drivers car on your list. They’re old cars now so they will have things that need fixing. Worth it though if you are willing to deal with that.

I have owned a 5th gen camaro SS for 12 years and it has outlasted everything while being the most hard driven vehicle. I have, and still, autocross it every month and take it to track days where my husband also drives it, so it's out on track all day long. We have owned so many cars and the Camaro Just. Keeps. Going. I have spent more on tires than I spent on the car at this point. I service it myself and everything is so easy, parts are easy to find and cheap. Off the top of my head, other cars we have owned to compare against: 1999 subraru impreza, 2002 impreza, 1991 miata, 2001 sonoma, 2004 crown vic P71, 1986 toyota supra, 2008 C6 Z06, 2011 Cayenne Turbo, 2016 2 series, 3 series E36, Pontiac G6, 2015 dodge charger SRT8, 318 E30, many street and dirt bikes.

Get a focus ST, super fun and a morale engine in the focus RS, torque steer and front wheel drive is super fun and just switch out the winter tires and no problem at all. You don’t even need the big turbo, but that can up the game, but the stock turbo is so small that it spools up almost instant instantly and makes coming out of corners just a riot.
DJScaryTerry@reddit
The focus ST and rs both have the same engine problems, most people I know with one have replaced the engine.

I don't really like newer cars as my "fun" cars. Sure they can be fast and I can view 378 cameras around the car but I find the act of driving the vast majority, boring.
As close to your requirements, I'd look at something like a VW Scirocco, Audi S1 but what you think is very fun may be wildly different to myself. What are you looking for when it comes to fun?
