I apologize for making fun of Volvos.

I’m a diesel technician and I hate that super truckers don’t realize that the “plastic automatic aero junk” trucks are better than their beloved Kenworth and Peterbilts. Volvo and Freightliners are extremely reliable with proper maintenance.
confused_shrew@reddit
I’ve had my 21 KW T680 for 490k problem free miles. However I’m also a mechanic and stay on top of maintenance
daemonescanem@reddit
Ive driven Mack's most of my career and they hardly ever break down on me. Company got me a new one two years ago, havent had an issue.
Hell hit a turkey vulture few weeks ago and it barely dented the grill screen. Another 18 inches higher and I would have eaten that sucker.
Own-Load-7041@reddit
Naw, no apostrophe dawg. They're not for plurality.
Blue_Veritas731@reddit
In fairness, with auto-corrupt these days, you never know if it's their mistake or a tech mistake.
Fractured-Justice@reddit
To be fair, Mack trucks have always had the reputation of being these nearly indestructible work vehicles
unloader86@reddit
When I was in the oilfields, my company had Mack's. We put those things to the absolute test. They rarely broke down.
West_Imagination3237@reddit
My frenkinsteiner's opti idle is crap. Steering alignment is a headache to correct , and I'm still make money. I miss Pete.
Sterling_____Archer@reddit
Yes, but Freightliner comfort is awful.
datdudeuheardof@reddit
Do you know why my KW T680 doesn't want to build air pressure at low speeds with a trailer? Driving around warehouses 10-15 mph I keep getting stuck blocking other trucks because i can't build enough air for about 5 minutes to be able move. I have told the shop people at multiple terminals and they can't figure it out because they think it's fine without a trailer connected.
pardipp@reddit
air compressor can’t keep up, or you got water in ur air tanks so u have less air, or ur trailer/truck has a air leak. i drove a 2019 KW and the only issue i had with it was that it wouldn’t go into gear because they zip tied the wiring harness for the transmission so tight that when it got hot outside it just melted it. they fixed it for free tho so idc but def gave me a mini heart attack
datdudeuheardof@reddit
I'm thinking it might be the air compressor, they did a leak test multiple times and it's completely fine without a trailer. I know it's not the trailers because it does it every time. Also tried draining the air tanks and getting the air dryer filter changed. Doesn't leave much that could be the culprit, maybe they just don't wanna spend so much to replace the compressor? My KW also has transmission probs, sometime i have to put it in reverse before it will go into drive, and occasionally it will not shift driving on the hwy temporarily. I miss my 26 freightliner from my last company. KWs are only good brand new in my opinion.
sundvlsean@reddit
Could have a small air leak in one of the air bags or the leveling valve.
Foxlen@reddit
Idk about Volvo cuz Ive never worked for a company than runs them, always hear good things about them as highway only trucks
But ive never encountered a reliable freightliner , their off the lot quality control its nuts bad
A company I was working for bought 5 2024s new, we had 4/5 trucks break down in less than 48 hours of using them (2 of them being westernstar 47x.. basically same thing)
Their transmissions fail at colder temps (freightliner said to use manual mode and run higher RPM to avoid failure)
None of the trucks could go more than week without some sort of failure
One of them had complete failure electronic wise and had to be towed back to freightliner
If other new trucks are worse that that, why does anyone buy new trucks?
But dont listen to me, im an off highway driver, aero trucks are all garbage to me, regardless of reliability .. mud and street trucks dont mix lol
Jacktheforkie@reddit
Here in the uk we use exclusively the aero ones, they easily hit 1 million plus miles, highest I’ve seen was at something like 2 million
emdefmek@reddit (OP)
Oh now i love my t680. To be honest for major issue in 309k miles.
Subject_Tip7629@reddit
Volvo is by far the cream of the industry when it comes to new trucks, drove one for two years before going local and the only reason why I don't miss it is because I now drive an 03 KW 700 with a C15 under the hood, absolute beast my old lady🙏
Fellthefox@reddit
I love my 26 Volvo but it's held together by hopes and dreams lmao.
It's gotten better with software updates.
Most issues seem to be fixed by just turning off the battery for a few minutes.
Woken up twice to the truck saying I no longer have brakes. Battery switch.
Collision prevention and company provided safety camera went out. Battery switch.
Radio out. Battery switch.
No bunk heat. Pulled fuse and put it back in (probably could have just hit the battery switch).
Have to turn on and off the load box alot to be able to use the bunk plugs.
Trucks currently leaning towards the driver's side by like 2 inches. Shop refuses to tell me why it's doing that / can't find the issue. Told me all Volvos do that. Not fixed by the battery switch lmao.
Love the truck, only real complaint is I can't keep the opti idle (or what ever Volvos version of it is called) engaged if I leave the truck
Outlandah_@reddit
Apology accepted. Now go do a lap around West Virginia
clindh@reddit
Nah. My stock d13 will out pull any other motor at 80k. I blow past dudes on grades
Outlandah_@reddit
Did I…ask…?
clindh@reddit
Found the old, grumpy Peterbilt driver
Outlandah_@reddit
I unfortunately drive one of those now, but I was technically a young Volvo driver for most of my career so far.
Acrobatic-Ad-4354@reddit
what about freightliner?
wittywillync@reddit
Freightliner is the worst driving truck on the road, in terms of comfort.
RKGamesReddit@reddit
I'd argue that title goes to the International LT - damn steering wheel isn't center with the pedals and chair. It's definitely fucked up my back.
Exact-Leadership-521@reddit
My international has the steering wheel ahead of the seat. But this freightliner I'm in has it off to the left and it's hard on the spine. And the brake is too close to the gas, can barely get my toe on the gas and gotta look down all the time to see if I'm on the brakes too
TheAnishmal@reddit
I drive a LT every day for work. It’s by far the worst riding truck I’ve ever experienced
Jeep4x420@reddit
Trying driving a Sterling. Factory exhaust so loud the turbo has your ears ringing at the end of the day. The dash bounces INCHES up and down over bumps. So much vibration and noise you feel like you got ran over at the end of the day
ReBearded@reddit
You should try a freightliner argosy, freightliner comfort dialed ALL the way down
Mine became the truck of thesius the amount of parts it went through
Outlandah_@reddit
Not when International exists.
pianodude01@reddit
Who willingly drives a freightliner?
Acrobatic-Ad-4354@reddit
bc of its part availability and ease of repair?
ieatassbutono@reddit
Yea but the downside is it’s a pile of shit to drive
Jeep4x420@reddit
Went from a beat to death Sterling to a Cascadia. The Freightliner is absolutely awesome to drive.
justin19833@reddit
To be fair. Sterling is the worse trucks ever built. So moving to the second worse truck built would feel like an upgrade.
Wolfleader09@reddit
Ain’t the CB slang for it “Freightshaker”?
HashnaFennec@reddit
I started my career in a freightliner and often when backing uphill, especially while turning, it’ll send all the torque into shaking the tractor instead of turning the drives. It felt like Clifford the big red dog had picked me as his next chew toy.
Wolfleader09@reddit
…. That’s a very helpful description, thank you lol
BonusHour8693@reddit
Must be Christmas time with all those lights
Whitehoneybun666@reddit
I drive a Volvo and hate it I almost quit the job when I got assigned a Volvo these trucks are pos
Adventurous_Issue155@reddit
Every volvo I get in doesn't make it pass a week with out a shop visit. It's always stupid things
Khar0n@reddit
Volvo Daycab is the most comfortable truck I ever drove, ours had the massaging back in the seats lol.
Spitfire954@reddit
Man, I drove 3 damn days with the seat back just airing up and down constantly on me. Annoyed the hell out of me. I get back and tell the shop about it… “Oh, did you hit the massage button?” “The what?” I had no idea.
Murkdonalds@reddit
I forgot about that feature- brings back memories lol. Red trucks with yellow lettering lol?
Rare_Indication_3811@reddit
Before it go down it will give you 3 months of codes and check engine light, then another check engine and 60 minutes to find a spot to park. Kenworth will just majestically stop in the middle of the intersection on 3:55pm
Spitfire954@reddit
To be fair the sensors and lights are the first (and only) thing to break on a Volvo. Mine is fine until I hit a bump and the dash lights up like a Christmas tree. I call the shop, “oh yeah, that truck just does that, you’re good to roll.”
yadabitch@reddit
“Engine derate in 53 minutes” bro
DavidSpy@reddit
Looks like the new 48 volt system generation. Haven’t seen any at my shop yet but they are only a bit over a year old now.
damnitdavid@reddit
I started letting my regen run every morning after letting it run all night. It quit doing that to me.
kakarota@reddit
I love volvo I truly do but I hate that they went full digital and their mirrors seem smaller to me on the new trucks. Previous Gen volvos all of them are reliable, comfortable, easy to drive, and their mirrors are fucking huge which make backing up sooo easy.
AlbeitTrue@reddit
There is no need to insult any brand or model. Different trucks are built for doing different stuff
Ill_Aside_5662@reddit
I've been driving the same Volvo since 2020. No major issues until this year with the SCR system. It runs very smooth.
I believe the repair was around 3k but I'd consider that good with 6 years of driving, no other work besides usual maintenance.
We had a Cascadia before in the fleet that was always in the shop. Sometimes you just get unlucky. Although brand new trucks will always have some kinda problems imo until the truck gets broken in.
whodat209@reddit
Just shut the truck off for a minute and then start it back up. My kw was doing that was just glitchy.
robs104@reddit
Paccar steering wheel stalk issues ftw!
w3stvirginia@reddit
Complete and utter pieces of shit. How they keep making this trash and companies keep buying it is unbelievable. Mine only has 130k miles and is on its 4th shifter stalk. When I was due for a new truck last year, all they were buying was KW and Peterbilt. I picked the KW because they order the Peterbilts with massive sleepers, tiny ass mirrors , and extra aero pieces that I don’t need or want for my basically local route. What a mistake. I should have kept my old truck until they resumed buying other brands. I straight up don’t want this buggy trash anymore. Next time it’s going to be a Volvo or a Freightliner.
Brisk907@reddit
The neo kws have the weirdest computer glitches.
Kaioken_khan@reddit
So derate if its because of running out of pig urine ( def ) you would need a forced regen if youre tcs and or abs lights are on it could be a easy fix related to the abs speed sensors ( the wire going into each wheel usually held by a bolt ) remove the sensors out and clean them make sure none of the wires are bent or freyed put the sensors back in then locate the transmission speed sensor unplug and plug back in do this while the battery is unplugged remove the negative or red connections
lord_nuker@reddit
Should have been driving a Scania
EelChato@reddit
If it ain’t a long nose and giving me 3 football fields per gallon I don’t want it 🦅🇺🇸🛢️
lordwreynor@reddit
My cousin went to a Volvo and she's like a reformed drunk. Won't shut up about it.
pinkypie80@reddit
😂😂😂 Or a vegan.
Fatguy503@reddit
Or a crossfitter....
Apmaddock@reddit
As a wrecker driver, I fucking hate Volvos. Everything on them is just different enough to be an extra pain in the ass when trying to get one prepped to tow.
dank_memes_911@reddit
Went from a 579 to a Mack anthem, best decision I ever made in trucking.
Outlandah_@reddit
I have never seen or heard anyone else say this 😂
Fractured-Justice@reddit
This is the one thing I hope stays as an optional feature and not something we all have to get because I just don't like digital dashboards. Like they're neat and all, but I don't want another thing that can break
thedailyworkwr@reddit
I drove a volvo for 2 years. God i miss it. Now I drive an international. Its like hitting rock bottom, literally thats how the suspension feels.
FloppyTacoflaps@reddit
That's a kw
stateside_irishman@reddit
Exactly. It broke down.
FloppyTacoflaps@reddit
Like a driver every truck breaks down every now in then, it's how often it happens where your concern should lie.
AdventurousLawyer646@reddit
Lmfao. Kw fan to I die, but that was an on point response! I hate all new electronic controlled trucks.
possibly_lost45@reddit
I've been driving Volvo trucks the last 10 years and anytime I get in something else it's like going from a Cadillac to a chevette
wittywillync@reddit
Same thing I tell all my buddies lol. It's hard to go back to another truck after being in a ride as comfortable as a Volvo.
Capt_Cyral@reddit
Don't get me wrong... I love the Star Trek franchise.... but, I don't want it as a dashboard.
whodat209@reddit
Volvo still suck
TonyTrucking@reddit
It’s ok we forgive you
