Which Balkan country do you think has the most spectacular mountains & mountain views?

I don't think Croatia gets enough love when it comes to our mountains, probably because we're more know for our beaches and we have the lowest highpoint in the Balkans, but we still have some stunning mountain peaks and views.
This is the Sveto Brdo/Babin Vrh mountain in the Southern Velebit range in the Lika region of Central Croatia.

The Alps
Environmental-Sun291@reddit
Right, I knew that...ok a random valley there.
perrcel@reddit
And that's how this valley looks if you looked behind. I was there last year and it's beautiful. Actually this valley is called Krma valley.
Revolutionary-Lab126@reddit
This is Vrata valley. What you're looking at in the middle left is Triglav's North Wall (Severna stena Triglava), the highest mountain in Slovenia with 2,864m.
Vrata valley is a great starting point for several 2,000m+ mountains.

This is another view point on Triglav (from Bovški Gamsovec)

The 7 Rila lakes, Bulgaria.
KPlusGauda@reddit
I actually followed this guy on Facebook, but then I realized that his photos were so heavily edited that it became annoying. Even a random village looked like a fairytale. Which tells about his talent, but I want to see places, and not imaginary world.
0neManSquad@reddit
If I have to be honest the edit is awful. It looks super unnatural. In reality is way more beautiful.
The OP photo (Albanian Alps pic) is heavily edited as well, btw.
KPlusGauda@reddit
The edit is imho interesting, not awful (but I respect your opinion), and yes, in reality, especially when you are there (and maybe in spring, when there is a mix of green, snow, sun and clounds) is much more beautiful. But check his (Vladislav's) other works. I think he does a great job, it's just so detached from reality I actually came around to almost hate it lol.
0neManSquad@reddit
What's beautiful and what's not is entirely subjective, of course, but I don't like it. I this looks way better
0neManSquad@reddit
This too
KPlusGauda@reddit
Agree 100%, and thank you for the photos
Quizzar@reddit
Noticed from the first seconds that the photo is oversaturated and distorted. I bet the lakes are beautiful, but that's not how they look
KPlusGauda@reddit
Yup. He should post pre- and after- editing photos lol
Btw all of these places in Bulgaria are really beautiful, just in more natural way lol
shurdi3@reddit
/r/ShittyHDR
KPlusGauda@reddit
Not just HDR, he somehow plays with depth or height or call it whatever it is, so things look more spectacular (higher or steeper) than they actually are. All of the places are still beautiful in real life, tho.
baconwrappedpikachu@reddit
Yeah that’s such a pet peeve of mine. Over-editing photos in a disingenuous way is such a bad habit and it really sets people up to be disappointed when they see magnificent places in person, which is sad.

I am still looking for Romanians who have been to Hoia Baciu forest 😅 Anyone?
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
Bubba I've been there many times.. Is nothing special. Just a forest...
kamarjera@reddit
Yeah right. Why would you go there many times then? In your dreams?
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
Cause it's a popular recreation area in my city Cluj, plus i lived in a neighborhood that was close to Hoia Baciu.
kamarjera@reddit
But have you been there at night?
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
Like any sane person, I am sleeping and not walking in the dark in the woods... Especially when we have a bear problem...
kamarjera@reddit
Of course. Don’t go into the forest if you’re afraid of the 🐺so the folklore wise men say…or a bear, in your case. But you might missing out, because things after midnight sometimes are not the same as in recreational daytime.
gabrielatr3@reddit
I’ve been in Hoia at night. Nothing special. Actually there used to be parties until sunrise and nothing happened to anyone. It’s just stories that it is “the most haunted forest in the whole world”. I’m not sure how it got this name because I can’t recall hearing about any paranormal activities happening in it. Probably it started as a joke and it got attention and then people continued saying that because many tourists showed interested in it. If you want to visit Romania/Cluj-Napoca only for this forest, don’t. You’ll be disappointed.
kamarjera@reddit
Its’ Wikipedia page says that the Hoia-Baciu Forest is a “hotspot of paranormal phenomena” .
Romanian Society of Parapsychology imply that Hoia-Baciu pertains to something called “bioplasma", four dimensional space, ectoplasm, and unconscious projections of psychic energy 🤷🏼♀️Sounds so interesting, but of course it may all be just an ‘urban legend’. Those night trips are not cheap either. Ok, thank you! I guess I’ll stick to Ghost Adventures documentary for now. The forest is also the setting for the horror video game Deadly Quiet 😅 Visiting Romania remains on my list, though!
gabrielatr3@reddit
Romania has a lot of beautiful places to visit so I hope you’ll get the chance to see them❤️
kamarjera@reddit
Oh, I’m definitely coming❤️Would you suggest summer months or early autumn for hiking trips in the mountains and woods?
c0sf-fkr@reddit
I grew up in that city...if you go there on a Friday night and hear any movement after midnight, I can guarantee it's young people...erm...partying
kamarjera@reddit
Did you ever hear some strange stories about what’s going on in that forest while growing up there? Like people gone missing? I guess I’ll just have to go there and see by myself while visiting 🇷🇴
c0sf-fkr@reddit
Stories, yeah, absolutely. The area has a lot of history so of course there is a lot of folklore. As a kid I once got lost myself in one of those forests as I wanted to hike from Cluj to Turda over the hills and through the gorges and slept the night in a forest...other than an annoying owl waking me up, it was actually quite peaceful. Though, this didn't happen in Hoia...that one is too small to even get lost for a significant amount of time
kamarjera@reddit
Brave kid! Good for you not to be afraid of the woods 🦉Romanian folklore features so many interesting supernatural creatures, like Muma Pădurii: “Mother of the Forest” I was reading about. I like how their names sound:) Samca, Capcaun 🧌And people are stuck on literary invented Dracula!
c0sf-fkr@reddit
P.S. if you're really interested in that kind of stuff, a couple of book recommendations for you:
Romanian legends and folk tales: Riddles and Proverbs - by Petre Ispirescu - this is a collection of local wisdom, stories and riddles
And from my favourite Romanian author (Mircea Eliade) you have History of Beliefs and Religious Ideas, butthat's not just about Romania
There's also...Romanian folklore and its archaic heritage - but this is more of an academic cultural and linguistic comparative study
kamarjera@reddit
“Romanian Folklore and its Archaic Heritage A cultural and Linguistic Comparative Study” costs 137.18€ online ! Why?
c0sf-fkr@reddit
Wtf? Really? I think you ca just find copies that "fell off a truck"
kamarjera@reddit
It’s at Greek booksellers. These additional 18 additional cents does my head in 😂 just make it 138 already. Copies that “fell off a truck”? Alright, this is going to be some search.
c0sf-fkr@reddit
Sail the high seas? Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum? Not sure how to explain it better 😂
kamarjera@reddit
Or hit the route 66, and a bottle of tequila? 😂 Anyway, let me know if you by any chance randomly stumble upon it.
kamarjera@reddit
Thank you so much for recommendations! I will order that book on folklore wisdom 🙏🏻 I know and read Mircea Eliade. I took a comparative religion course at college and studied his theory of eternal return. I also love Emil Cioran. Recently re-read his Tears and Saints.
c0sf-fkr@reddit
Yeah, but I've been hiking and camping in those hills and mountains since I was 3-4 and still hike the Carpathians at least once a year...I just love the area.
You have loads of these supernatural folklore beings beyond that in the region...you have: moroi, strigoi, iele, pricolici, samca, zburător, balaur, crâsnic, etc.
There's also one that I think is quite specific to the region, I haven't heard of it outside of the Cluj, Maramures and Bucovina areas called Marțolea if you're interested in quite specific folklore
kamarjera@reddit
Wow Martolea is one powerful entity! And descends on Tuesday nights…So interesting why is it Tuesday? Poor women! Her punishment is just so brutal 🤯 Is there a heavy metal band by the same name? I love how Maramures sounds too. Need to research all hiking trips there day and night 🏔️
c0sf-fkr@reddit
Yeah, but you need to take it with a huge pinch of salt...it's mostly supernatural stories made to help with survival...for example there was a really old legend my grandad told me, I can't remember the actual story, but it was basically about feeding the spirits of the forest during the winter, so you would leave food offerings...in practise what that did was sustain the deer population that would feed the wolves so they wouldn't attack flocks of sheep or children.
In fact a lot of the Romanian folklore was about either survival or scaring people into having as many kids as possible so the populating survives harsh conditions, diseases, and almost continuous war for about a couple of millennia
kamarjera@reddit
Yes, but those ancestors of yore did survive in the harshest conditions, and one of the reasons is that they were viscerally tuned in with nature. What we call supernatural for them was natural and there the wisdom lies. Your grandad’s story is very touching. They knew what they were doing. It was my grandfather who introduced me to the woodland, too.🌲
Usual-Trouble-2357@reddit
Random ass forest. Close to the largest Transylvanian city. You can walk to it from the city.
It's nothing. It's just a random forest. I once got drunk there with some friends and we told creepy stories and got scared out of auto-sugestion. That's the most exciting thing about it for me.
mihai2me@reddit
I once built a big ass bonfire on the edge of it, took shrooms with a few friends and blasted brain rotted hard style meme music till 7am. We fought with burning sticks, raced in the dark and ate the weirdest fucking snacks you could imagine that were hoarded by our super autistic mate.
Best fun I ever had in a forest my whole life 🤣
kamarjera@reddit
Fighting with burning sticks!😆this sounds like fun, at last. Did you dare to go inside the forest? Tripping on mushrooms while there must be something else 🍄
mihai2me@reddit
Yeah, whenever we'd run out of wood for the fire we'd go into the pitch black forest to gather more dead wood, and we only got small RGB studio lights to see with 🤣
kamarjera@reddit
What a night! 😂 I bet you scared the shit out of those UFOs supposed to be hovering there 👽
kamarjera@reddit
Bummer! Here come the downers first. So it’s nothing. Not even beautiful?
Usual-Trouble-2357@reddit
It's a forest. Not an impressive forest. A bog standard forest with a couple of trees that grow a bit weird.
Zer0_on_reddit@reddit
It's a random forest, nothing special but nice
kamarjera@reddit
Well, I am interested to explore it during forest night hike when it is supposed to be special 👽
Dry-Drawer150@reddit

kamarjera@reddit
Oh, I don’t really care much for ‘Top- whatever’ things or places. Looking for unique experiences. I love nature and paranormal and the photos look so intriguing, so I seek a perspective from someone, especially locals who actually have been there 🦇

Yes, Eastern-Bosnia is awesome.
Also the Slovenian Alps.

KPlusGauda@reddit
Correct me if I'm wrong but this is a man made lake
Keke_Papaya@reddit
Yes, Uvac Lake is an artificial lake. It was formed in 1979 by the construction of a 110-meter-high earthen dam on the Uvac River.
KPlusGauda@reddit
Thank you. It's easy to recognize a man-made lake once you see the coast having a visible, sharp line around the water.
Keke_Papaya@reddit
These "entrenched meanders" were formed over millennia as the Uvac River carved its way through the limestone rock, creating sharp, serpentine bends that turn up to 270 degrees. Only thing that is artificial is water level that is now permanently risen.

I understand that, I was exactly talking about the water level

As a mountaineer, that has been to quite a few balkan countries, this is my answer: every mountain has its charm. That said, Bosna is a bit boring and I was not a fan of serbian mountains as well. My top pucs: Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro. Also the border area of kosovo, albania and macedonia is very nice.
IndividualAction3223@reddit
Why boring may I ask?
peacokk16@reddit
Dont take it wrong, it is really nice, but I miss the the big rock formations and sreep walls of the alps, velebit, durmitor, greek mountains...
Arrietty6@reddit
This is the only right answer. All of the Balkan countries belong to different mountain ranges and are magnificent. Some of them have old primeval forests, some of them have amazing waterfalls and rivers, some of them has amazing hiking trails... But most importantly - all of them are still mostly untouched by human hands.

ThickCaterpillar9867@reddit
I live between Austria and Albania and trust me Albania is 1000 times safer, look at robberies and at murders statistics(which are still very low most happens between criminal groups) but robberies are inexistent ,most of our criminals are already outside Albania.

The water and surroundings are indeed beautiful but the management of the place is disastrous. It's the same in many places in Romania. They don't take care of the nature there and everything is made for instant profit, not for a long term sustainable touristic destination.
The guy who got us there by boat was drunk and forgot to take us back. We went back with another boat and when we arrived they started fighting about who should get the money for our trip.

Bulgaria has 4 mountain ranges in its territory with amazing variety of landscapes
Dreadscythe95@reddit
Sorry I didn't mean to sound like that, I love Bulgaria, I have travelled the whole country.
I meant that Bulgaria has the smallest mountains in height compared to the rest of the Balkan countries, which are extremely mountainous.
dwartbg9@reddit
Mind checking the rankings for tallest mountains in Europe as a whole? And which is the tallest mountain in the whole Eastern Europe?
Dreadscythe95@reddit
Shocked at this. I just l looked. For some reason they don't feel as harsh as Albania Montenegro Boznia but I was wrong.
Greedy_Being_8328@reddit
What do u mean even Bulgaria ? Of course Bulgaria has great mountains not just nice u are just biased
Dreadscythe95@reddit
I didn't mean it that way it was a misunderstanding, look my other comment so I don't have to write it again.
fatgirlcuddler@reddit
Parts of Montenegro look utterly insane, whether or not you're into forested jagged mountains that look like jungles in the summer, or alien, serene karstic wastelands. Bosnia is similar too

How do you define a mountain? I would say the heights overlooking the sea on many Greek islands are unbeatable as far as mountain scenery goes.
Mandalorian860@reddit
Bulgaria and Albania for sure. As a whole , they have the most mountains over 2,000 meters high in the entire region. Montenegro and Greece have some beautiful mountain ranges as well.

Montenegro, by far. You can be on beach and in 2 hours on mountain that needs winter jacket. And is safer and more hospitable then Albania and there is no posibility to be killed and your organs harvested.

"Safe and more hospitable then Albania and there is no possibility to be killed and your organs harvested"
Completely untrue claims there.
Albania is both known for hospitality, and enjoys some of the lowest crime rates in Europe. Claims of organ harvesting Albanians are completely unfounded.
Dear-Ad1582@reddit
In 2 ours you cross the country.

The part for beach and mountain is also valid for Slovenia
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
Montenegro (almost all of it) and Albania (part bordering with Montenegro - Prokletije).
Ujemegaz@reddit
For example, Kotor has similarities with Vlora. Only in these two bays i have seen such blue sea water.
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
Kotor Bay is amazing, yea. I didn't mention it as I don't really count it in "mountain views" albeit getting up to the Mount Lovcen via cable car is once in a lifetime ezperience
Inductiekookplaat@reddit
I went to Kotor a few days ago and the cable car was closed... Opening in May :/
Montenegro was beautiful tho
BeatnologicalMNE@reddit
How's Vlora in May btw? You just gave me idea for a short vacation in May. :D

Albania and Montenegro are quite close on that front. Especially the border mountains between each other.

The fact that they have this famous national park and it's name means 'bedroom' in Romanian and then basically ALL the fucking mountains have some sleep-related etymology(all Romance for some reason)....they're not beating the allegations.
