My ifr checkride hours was in 3 weeks and the dpe just called asking if i could do it on sunday.
Biggest curveball questions send them please !

If you just planned an IFR XC flight, and your magnetic course is 181, but the radial of the victor airway you are following is 176, are you picking an easterly or westerly altitude for that leg? Why do you think they are different?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
different degrees because of where true north is in comparison to magnetic north (variation) . i would fly the altitude assigned for where the destination is
mctomtom@reddit
They are both in magnetic. The difference is the VOR had a different magnetic north when it was built and charted, and magnetic north is always moving, but the charted v-airways degrees don't change. This is called magnetic declination. You always chose the charted degrees that is on the v-airway to choose your altitude.

What's the difference between LPV and LP plus V?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
LPV Has vertical guidance and LP+V has ADVISORY vertical guidance, not to be trusted as much as LPV
Mother-General-2177@reddit
Plus v will fly you into a mountain..
DeerSimilar3688@reddit
I fail to understand why this option even exists. Likely the cause of the TBM accident in Steamboat Springs earlier this year...
Mother-General-2177@reddit
I’d argue negligence caused it but the +V certainly helped
DifferentIntern6311@reddit
Plus V stands for plus violation because the FAA doesn’t care if you were “following the advisory” and bust an altitude
saml01@reddit
The second one results in a lot more interesting YouTube videos.

Be able to describe how the GPS constellation works
What is RAIM, when is it required, what is needed to pass a RAIM test.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
Receiver autonomous Intergity monitoring, requiered when gps is my main navigation source, to pass a rain test i need more than the 4 minimum satélites giving me location data throughout the length and route of flight
TxAggieMike@reddit
Review Seth Lake’s vsl.aero YT series on decoding the IFR ACS.

johnisom@reddit
You’re approaching KTVY, coming in on the localizer approach for runway 17, circling to 17. How do you execute it?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
you mean circling to 35?
johnisom@reddit
no, we're going 17
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
doesn’t make sense to circle 17
johnisom@reddit
DPE gave me this on my checkride
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
i’m so confused
johnisom@reddit
Happened to me and I nearly busted because of it. I was confused and initially picked localizer minimums instead of circling minimums. What you’d do is circle for left traffic 17.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
i assumed the minimums obviously change because of the chart but how do u make left traffic if ur on final? VCOA?
johnisom@reddit
I said circling 17. My DPE gave me this scenario during the actual checkride to satisfy the circling approach criteria
Atheist-Prophet@reddit
Here's one that I still honestly don't have a clear answer to: In the aircraft that you are going to be flying for your checkride, are you capable of flying an approach that has a Radius to Fix leg on it?
Example approach at KCRQ: https://aeronav.faa.gov/d-tpp/2604/05310RRZ6.PDF
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
😳😳😳 that’s not an arc?
Atheist-Prophet@reddit
It's not a DME arc, it's something different called a radius to fix that I believe is only found on RNP approaches (which flying GA we won't use because it's never authorized). Someone please correct me because I'm still learning myself - Apparently there's some nuance where you aren't allowed to hand fly these and need like a GTN 650 coupled with an autopilot to be able to do them minimum but I saw some forum posts that you cannnn hand fly them but you need a digital display like a G5 paired with the GPS because the way it presents is as a constantly changing DTK.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
i have dual g5s so maybe i can, ill ask today
johnisom@reddit
How long before your ETD, and how long after, can you pick up your IFR clearance? Assuming you already filed it.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
30 minutes before, i need my ifr clearance, what do you mean after?
johnisom@reddit
Bingo on the 30 mins before. For after, if I file this morning for a 12:00 estimated departure, but I call up ATC after 12:00 to pick up my clearance, how late after 12:00 can I do so?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
2 hours

3 modes of GPS and when do they switch?
jack_the_pilot5436@reddit
Explain when your able to descend below a DA
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
never unless it’s an MDA and i have the three things, i commented them under another reply, and i can only descend to 100 above TDZE
Atheist-Prophet@reddit
I think there's some specific thing about never descending below an MDA unless you have those things, but a DA it is expected you will descend below it briefly when going missed as you in a descent at that point. (This was asked on my IFR oral a few weeks ago)
mctomtom@reddit
Yeah, and don't go missed until you hear "minimums" or are actually at minimums. I see students go missed above the DA sometimes. Examiners don't like that.
jack_the_pilot5436@reddit
Exactly
jack_the_pilot5436@reddit
As the comment said below, the decision altitude is just that. A decision. Once you hit that altitude you make the decision to go missed or continue. But when going missed the plane will not start its climb instantaneously. The point of the question is to see if the applicant has a true understanding of what a DA is and the differences to a MDA
mtnflyer1@reddit
What's a VDP and what's it used for?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
visual descent point, where i can descend past the MDA only if i have the runway in sight
mtnflyer1@reddit
Visual Decent Point. Yes.
So if you have the runway in sight beyond the VDP, you cant descend below the MDA to land?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
if runway is in sight yes i can
mtnflyer1@reddit
So what's the purpose of having it if you can just descend past it? What information is it telling us?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
vdp ensures no CFIT until flying down to 100 above tdze
mtnflyer1@reddit
Not quite. I'll give you one more shot. Think about why it's in the location that it is.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
if you don’t have the runway in sight by the VISUAL DESCENT POINT you go missed, the purpose is to give you a glide path to touchdown
mtnflyer1@reddit
So close. The visual descent point is where the glide slope meets the MDA. You got that part but you do not have to go missed upon reaching it.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
good oneeeee i’ll come back to this tonight

What button could add a $1,000 cost to your education?
Fulcrum58@reddit
Can someone elaborate on this? I’m training in g1000 so I’m assuming it’s either forgetting to hit the suspend button or arm the approach mode to fly an RNAV approach with the autopilot?
123456789simerk@reddit
g1000 should automatically do it for you
Odd_Entertainment471@reddit
It’ll go to green needles for you, where the 430/530 won’t but on BOTH, you still have to push the SUSP on missed or pay another $1,000! My 430/530 set up reminded just last week that it won’t go the green without a button push (nor will the a/p fly the slope without pushing the “APPR” button……. Sigh…..
Bluevette1437@reddit
Forgetting to press SUSP or switching to green needles on a VOR, ILS, or LOC approach
Fulcrum58@reddit
Okay so just making sure your CDI is on the correct nav source for the approach, thank you.
TxAggieMike@reddit
Correct.
It is permitted to be on a GPS source (magenta needles) to start an ILS or LOC approach.
But at the proper point, you need to be on raw data (green needles).
Not switching can be a reason you earn a Notice of Disapproval (NOD) and must retake your ride.
Switching between the two is done with the CDI button.
DifferentIntern6311@reddit
Do you find DPEs are okay with using bearing pointer on pink needles when shooting a VOR approach? Legally 100% allowed, probably a great prebrief item

I’d suggest you say you really can’t do it Sunday, if you need. If you’re prepared though, go for it! Some things you could run into would be questions about circling, when can you descend past minimums, how far do you have to stay from the AP while you circle, how do you know an aircrafts category, and what do during circling when you lose the airport to clouds/missed. Good luck!
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
circling is used in case the runway for the approach is unusable, for reasons like weather etc, i can descend below minimums if it’s and MDA and i am descending constant rate, the visibility is not less than minimums on the approach plate and i can see one of the 11 runway ALS lights, i circle at 1.3 from the runway, th aircraft category is in the TPP and i cross check with my POH, in circling and i go missed i fly the assigned missed approach if practical.
jack_the_pilot5436@reddit
It’s not a distance you maintain from the runway. It’s a minimum distance from the runway . It’s considered a protected area and is the only way you can be safe from obstacles or terrain
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
the 1.3 miles?
jack_the_pilot5436@reddit
https://ifr-magazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-28-at-11.58.26-AM.png
This a good picture showing that its an area you are trying to stay within, not maintain the outer ring of it. Although the imagine is base off of the standard charts
jack_the_pilot5436@reddit
Yes. And also the 1.3 isn’t just a 1.3. It’s determined by category and altitude based on if it has the white c in a black box by the circling minimum. Although only time will not be 1.3 is if your landing at an airport with a landing elevation I think above 7k. Then it goes up to 1.4
dph8819@reddit
You are waas equipped. Assume you need an alternate. Your preferred alternate has a TAF showing 600’ ceilings at your ETA and has an LPV approach. Can you use it as an alternate?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
yes but no less than 600’ ceiling or i will need a different alternate
dph8819@reddit
Good guess, but it’s incorrect. LPV is treated as a non-precision approach for alternate planning purposes.
It’s a bit of a trick question, and I didn’t realize it until a day before my checkride.
It’s in the introduction to alternate minimums in the TPP. Only ILS, PAR, and GLS approaches qualify for 600-2.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
🤦🤦
Imaginary_Amoeba3461@reddit
Not a question, but if you feel you are not ready, delay it especially if you’re going for a career and aren’t just flying recreationally.
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
i am ready i wanted it asap been training for way too long
Misterslate@reddit
When do we need to file a flight plan?
ThatLooksRight@reddit
Well, before Sunday, I guess.
Misterslate@reddit
For weather conditions,
And also what does filling a flight plan get you.
ThatLooksRight@reddit
Hopefully a good start to the checkride on Sunday!
fly123123123@reddit
Probably not. OP won’t be legal to act as PIC under IFR, so they can’t legally file a flight plan.
jtyson1991@reddit
I filed right in front of my DPE for my ride. Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?
fly123123123@reddit
Honestly unsure.
Helpful_Corn-@reddit
My IFR DPE made me file under my own cert. I think he was basing it on the same reasoning as the student being PIC on the PPL checkride.
fly123123123@reddit
Interesting. I also got to enter actual IMC on my checkride. Never filed explicitly though — requested a clearance for a TEC route from ground.
bgrant902@reddit
This happened to me for my private ride. Very stressful but you’ll do great!
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
same! but i love the pressure
14Three8@reddit
When are we required to file an alternate? What if we don’t have waas?
What the requirements for an alternate to be legal? What if we don’t have waas?
Horror-Quality-578@reddit (OP)
when the destination airport 1 hour before or after ETA time, has less than 2k feet ceiling and 3sm visibility i need an alternate, if i don’t have waas the alternate must have a precision approach, and have at least 600 ft ceiling and 2 sm visibility at ETA, if there is only a non precision it must need 800 ft ceiling and 2 sm visibility

I guess the only other thought is that you don't have to accept the earlier date. They probably got a cancellation and are trying to fill it, but if you feel like you want the extra practice, don't accept and just wait for your date. If you are ready, then send it! Good luck!
