Aerospace Engineer in the private sector. Plenty of sponsorships, but it’s quite literally rocket science.

I’m an Aerospace Engineer and my job is classified
EasilyExiledDinosaur@reddit
Most are careers. 100%. Ive met many old people and every single one of their carers were African. Dozens of them.
All spoke great english. All accepted minimum wage and awful hours. They sre the only ones to accept it. They get skilled workers visas.
Informal-Preference8@reddit
That's actually quite sad, especially for them
EasilyExiledDinosaur@reddit
Believe it or not, they were all quite happy with their conditions. British people wouldn't tolerate it though. Mainly from unpaid transport times between clients and lots of unpaid overtime is guess.
But for them, its a lot better than their home countries would probdide. Not sure what self rightous people are downvoting me for being right. But hey, this is reddit.
EngineeringOblivion@reddit
How are they on minimum wage if they are on a skilled workers visa?
Old-Brick8218@reddit
It's on the immigration salary list and the threshold is only £25k.
Additional_Egg_6685@reddit
I think it’s mad that we have industries at are in high demand and we aren’t training them internally. The idea of bringing people in as a stopgap to fill a skills shortage is fine but once identified this gap needs to be filled with young British people who are desperate for good jobs.
CouchAlchemist@reddit
Your statement makes a massive assumption that there are people who have the skills to learn but did not get a chance. You cannot teach or train anyone to love math or programming and perform problem solving on a daily basis. Training is very expensive as someone with 0 programming language will take atleast about 500 hours to become good enough to work for a large enterprise. To train someone, you need a senior person to spend an equivalent time which means for a company that's a loss of 1000 hours. Nobody has that level of time or money and small to mid size companies won't exist if this becomes mandatory.
To bypass all this, get someone who has atleast got foundational knowledge from uni and can be productive within a week. Else look outside and give th job to right fit of a person.
ICanDanceIfIWantToo@reddit
You not seen the state of the job market..... and the list of jobs you can get a skilled worker visas for.
It's a scandal at this point
Additional_Egg_6685@reddit
If we are willing to bring in outside work we should be willing to subsidise learning and development of skill.

The rich landlords and homeowners need constant immigration to create artificial shortage of housing and pump up rents and house prices to increase their wealth.

I am a Software engineer working in Finance
InterestAdditional49@reddit
If only I was intelligent enough to become a software engineer unfortunately that’ll probs never happen
Aggressive_Pin941@reddit
It’s not that hard. Trust me.
InterestAdditional49@reddit
I honestly really do doubt it’s that easy to start learning it
Aggressive_Pin941@reddit
I work in development. Mainly in the devops space. It’s not easy, but it’s not that hard either. Same as getting muscular. It’s about being consistent. Can it be done? Yes. Assuming you have around average intelligence. I did a comp sci degree (and that was hard cause I’m meh at maths) so you may or may not need that. it takes time money and effort but it’s not hard.
Ambitious-Elk-3350@reddit
People being whiny and saying that are great, because it means those of us with balls just learn it, get jobs and earn massive salaries.
Seriously, though. The UK still has a developer shortage because too many Brits think it's "too hard". I've even had to interview some of them, who have the qualifications but no confidence and no willingness to even try.
I did some beginner workshops for newcomers, but I quit because I was sick of the attitude. Who signs up for a course just to sit there and go "I'm a big dum dum, I could never do it."
Yeah, alright.
bored_toronto@reddit
It's the "I'm terrible at maths" mentality hard at work. Plus making fun of "swots" and "boffins" at school.
these_metal_hands@reddit
It's not that hard tbh. Especially these days with Claude

Social Worker here. Based on recent stats there are 6000 vacancies. There will always be shortages and a need to fill these roles. Training more people will not be enough as the job comes with a lot of emotional toll resulting in retention being a challenge.
Vemyx@reddit (OP)
and these jobs provide sponsorship despite not having met the required salary?
ConversationHairy363@reddit
The roles exceed the required salary threshold as social work is highly in demand with fewer people interested in filling the roles despite the training opportunities and pathways available to help people qualify sooner.

Academic here, but I’d say those sponsorships have dried up in the last years and not many Universities are hiring anymore..
Prestigious_Wash_620@reddit
The two jobs where it hasn’t dried up are financial analysts (who generally work in banking) and doctors. But doctor numbers are likely to fall a lot now they’re prioritising British graduates for training positions.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/immigration-system-statistics-data-tables#sponsored-work-visas-by-occupation-and-industry
I’m not on a skilled worker visa but this should be helpful. It shows visa grants by job, industry and nationality. Worth breaking down by quarter as Visa grants have fallen a lot.
It’s missing data for part of 2024 (and the earlier data is in the older spreadsheet at the above link). This is because the government changed how they classify jobs.
Both-Technology-7881@reddit
software engineer in fintech
I’m looking for a job change and have spoken to around 35 recruiters in the past month who are not willing to sponsor… i’d say there are plenty of opportunities if you don’t require sponsorship. It’s wild out there.
Scared_Step4051@reddit
because there is no shortage of UK generic software engineers and it is laughable it ever ended up being eligible for sponsorship, thankfully people are waking up to this
Interesting_Buddy_18@reddit
psych/economic degree students who decide to do a python course on udemy in the midst of their degrees are not software engineers as much as they would like to be
Embarrassed_Yak_7609@reddit
I am here on a visa in tech and last year got offered a role at a company that said they were looking for 6 months and I was the only person they were interested in. So while you may think there isn’t a shortage, a degree of skills on paper doesn’t always match what’s needed in the job
Vemyx@reddit (OP)
Well, at some point there was, i still speak to a lot of tech people who made it here on skilled worker visa even recently.
