Configuring roof rack system on my camper shell
Posted by IceCreamGang@reddit | overlanding | View on Reddit | 5 comments
I recently got a free ARE shell for my 17 Silverado. I am wanting to get a roof rack system for a platform and maybe a tent in the future. The shell has tracks already on. I went to a local off-roading shop and they quoted $800 for Yakima towers, bars, and landing pads. If I were to put a platform, would I still need cross bars? Really just trying to figure out what kind of components/attachments I would need for this configuration.
I'm obviously new to anything overlanding, so any help/advice would be great!

Those tracks on your ARE shell are standard C-channel style. If going with a full platform, you don't need separate crossbars. Platform feet bolt straight into the track. Check the track load rating first, most ARE shells with bolt-on tracks are 200-300 lbs distributed static. If you want an RTT down the line (120-160 lbs + occupants), you may exceed the track rating. Some guys reinforce with internal crossmembers bolted to bed rail clamps to transfer load to

You don’t need Yakima cross bars for a roof platform—your existing shell tracks are enough.
Only need track-compatible mounting feet, then mount the platform directly.
The $800 quote is overpriced; DIY or aftermarket universal platform is much cheaper. Also reinforce the shell internally before adding a rooftop tent.

I have those same tracks, I went to my local rack dealer and bought the A plates that slide into those tracks and four pieces of 4 ft x1 1/2" aluminum angle. I mounted the angle to those tracks and then also mounted the angle to the tent so it just slides over very nice and tight, use dessert nuts on the inside one with four bolts down each side. I can remove the tent by just taking off the 8 bolts but the beauty is it sits nice and tight and low. I have thousands of miles on it with this setup with no issues.

If you're planning on a platform you don't need the Yak bars, just the feet. Look at Sherpa's universal platform for what I am referring to. https://sherpaec.com/collections/universal
You can DIY your own from 8020 T-track and some fittings and sideplates.
