Frank's Black Cherry Wishniak - SE PA/NJ region.
ScamperPenguin@reddit
Ale-8
FancyWatercress8269@reddit
Birch beer seems pretty regional. It’s what we always had with pizza when I was a kid.
WittyCombination6@reddit
It's not exclusive but Coca-Cola was invented in Georgia and its headquarters is in the capital Atlanta.
Since it's the world's most popular soda it has an insane amount of influence here. Pretty much every restaurant sells Coke products exclusively.
Coke even has a huge museum in Atlanta that gets over 1 million visitors a year.
ChoiceMundane8843@reddit
all the soda at my pub tastes like whiskey , is that a flavor??
doomgeneration91@reddit
Not sure it’s exclusive but at least regional to the South east - Cheerwine!
rawsugar87@reddit
I tried this at the state capitol in California! What a fantastic soda!
Trixiebees@reddit
I thought it was sugary wine for sports moms. Finding out that it is actually delicious cherry soda pop was an awesome day
eac555@reddit
I've bought it at the grocery store in California.
leannmanderson@reddit
I first encountered cheerwine in St. Louis.
WhiskeyDeltaBravo1@reddit
Cheerwine and Sun Drop! North Carolina originals!
gsxr@reddit
Sun drop is INSANELY popular in my town of 1200. it's really hard to find anywhere else outside of STL, but my tiny mid-missouri town loves it.
greasyjimmy@reddit
Never heard of it until I was in college in Rolla, MO and a friend from Washington, MO said she loved it.
gsxr@reddit
Go miners! Thats the nearest big town to me.
chirop1@reddit
SunDrop was big in west Kentucky as well.
VernonDent@reddit
Yes it was. Ski was another favorite.
TacoRedneck@reddit
Took me a while to figure out what the hell a "Bottle of Ski" was in the Kentucky Headhunters Dumas Walker song was. Then I saw one at a truck stop.
otetrapodqueen@reddit
When I think of Kentucky I think of ale8!
FMLwtfDoID@reddit
Sun Drop originated in Missouri.
fiestybox246@reddit
It was perfected and then bottled in Gastonia, NC for 65 years.
platoniclesbiandate@reddit
It was developed in Missouri but the bottling headquarters was in Gastonia, NC.
FMLwtfDoID@reddit
They bottle Pepsi in the US and Canada. Is Pepsi now half Canadian because it’s bottled there?
platoniclesbiandate@reddit
No one is here for a debate just stating facts
Saltpork545@reddit
Yep, Sundrop is indeed from Missouri.
As are Fitz's and Vess.
As am I for that matter and I happen to be a food history nerd to boot. The downvote button is the 'I don't like this' button and it's honestly sad how many people downvote based on emotions, not very easy to find info.
hypnoticbacon28@reddit
Sun Drop became big in Indiana, too, but I haven’t seen it down here in Texas yet.
Doone7@reddit
Wink too. But I think its discontinued.
tatorpop@reddit
Wink, the sassy drink from Canada Dry. So Canada.
Doone7@reddit
Weird. Wonder why it got so popular in a few states down here. Is it still made up North?
GiraffesCantSwim@reddit
Sundrop is pretty big in Middle Tennessee, but couldn't find it in West when I was in college over there some million years ago. I know we used to have Cheerwine too, but IDK anymore.
No_Information_8973@reddit
It's kinda rare, but can occasionally find sun drop in Iowa.
FMLwtfDoID@reddit
That’s probably because it’s from Missouri.
JumpyAlbatross8135@reddit
and cookout, the best fast food restaraunt (where they sell cheerwine)
queenchubkins@reddit
It’s made its way up to Ohio. We also have Buccee’s and Waffle House though so we’re trying hard to be southern.
CHIKINBISCUiT@reddit
Well, half of you moved to Florida and the other half vacations there.
JustMyTypo@reddit
How many Chick-Fil-A you got mon?
queenchubkins@reddit
Plenty. There’s one like two miles from my house.
CaPaTn@reddit
Ohio wants to be the south SO BAD but people frequently also get really annoyed when people don’t consider it the Midwest. It’s very interesting.
Th1ccSenpai@reddit
Then there's people from Cleveland, like me, who do not want to be either. Why tf are there confederate flags up here and no we dont say 'ope'
pappapirate@reddit
People in NE OH absolutely say ope lol
Longjumping-Air1489@reddit
Didn’t Ohio famously join in the Rebel Confederacy so they could own other humans? Or is it just you also have a bunch of moronic shitheads who hate minorities?
/s
Dazzling-Climate-318@reddit
No Ohio is infested with Southerners and has been almost since its beginning as people from Virginia and Kentucky were some of the earliest illegal immigrants to the area which became Ohio. After the U.S. revolution then people legally relocated from the south to Ohio as well as from the North. During the Civil War there were a lot of Southern sympathizers in Ohio, they were called Copperheads. And while the commander of the forces which literally started the Civil War by firing on Fort Sumter was no longer living in Ohio at the time, he was from Ohio. He had married a Southern Lady and supported the Southern cause so much that he accepted a commission in his States military and he literally ordered the artillery battery he commanded to fire on the Union forces which refused to abandon the fort there.
mckmaus@reddit
Those are Missouri problems too
botulizard@reddit
I think a lot of that could be avoided if we all reimagined how we view the borders of these cultural regions that might not have specific definitions. Like, parts of Ohio are absolutely not midwestern, but some of it is. Same with Michigan. It also avoids silly things like people trying to assert that cities like Buffalo and Pittsburgh are midwestern just because they have some cultural affinity with Detroit and Cleveland (both of which, funny enough, are themselves firmly in the "not the midwest" parts of their respective states).
StrangerKatchoo@reddit
Between Sheetz, Wawa, and Rutgers, PA is the home of gas station cuisine… and I still want a Buccee’s. It’s next level.
RedStateKitty@reddit
Rutters. I'm guessing that "Rutgers" was auto correct. I sure do miss Rutters and getting milk at state minimum. And Weis market ice cream. Down here you usually can't get milk other than single serve packages in gas station convenience stores. For milk the place to go when you don't wanna or can't hit the grocer is Dollar general. Which are nearly as ubitqous as gas station convenience stores.
StrangerKatchoo@reddit
Yes, that was definitely autocorrect 🤦♀️
My buddy and I are gonna do a “vacation” photo shoot at every DG in our area, acting like we’re at some grand attraction. We think we’re funny.
UnusualFruitHammock@reddit
This explains the cheerwine at the hot chicken place in Chicago and I still don't know what it is. Owner is from North Carolina.
Myfourcats1@reddit
Cheerwine is what Cherry Coke wishes it could be
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
I'm in Chicago too, and have always wanted to try Cheerwine. Where is this chicken place?
UnusualFruitHammock@reddit
Roost chicken and biscuits has a cheerwine margarita
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
Thanks!
GiraffesCantSwim@reddit
Oh my, that sounds delicious.
Saltpork545@reddit
Cheerwine is genuinely good. It's almost like a clear cherry cola, but that fails to describe the good aspects of it. It doesn't have the typical medicinal cherry flavor. If you've ever had cherry flavoring from Sonic, it's more akin to that than say, cherry cough syrup. Try it. Really.
I have a place in town I go to that stocks Cheerwine zero in bottles and I pick up a pack now and again. Have one left in my fridge.
dreddpiratedrew@reddit
Clear cherry cola? That shit red as hell cuz
Saltpork545@reddit
It is red, but it has flavors and elements of a cola. It's not a fruit flavored drink like sprite or orange soda. There's bitters in it, like a cola.
Colas are artificially dyed dark colors. They, much like crystal pepsi, are clear by default and have coloring agents added so you associate cola with dark colors because we associate the flavors of colas with darker colors and not just sweet and acid notes, like fruit flavored sodas.
Cheerwine is more like a clear cherry cola than it is a red Sprite.
RedStateKitty@reddit
Definitely has caffeine. I stop at food lion every trip through NC and stock up.
Capybara_Capoeira@reddit
And not cola. It's just a good, cherry soda.
RedStateKitty@reddit
Aldi is now stocking Cheerwine in 12 pack cans only regular, not zero sugar. (I won't drink diet anyway.)
Dorkinfo@reddit
Sweet as fuck cherry that if you ordered “cherry” at a soda fountain, you’d be happy.
stalagit68@reddit
I was going to say that.
Muppet-Ball@reddit
Grand Rapids recently got its first Bojangles. No Cheerwine. My wife was very disappointed.
RedStateKitty@reddit
That has to be a fountain supplier issue.
Dorkinfo@reddit
lol I yelled CHEERWINE at my phone when I saw the question. But the real answer is grapico.
Maeriberii@reddit
I’ve seen it in the PNW for at least a decade. My school used to stock it in vending machines. That said, most people don’t know what it is.
BankManager69420@reddit
We finally have it in Oregon but it’s only at a couple specific places and it sells out super fast.
AbilityAdventurous22@reddit
I live in the southwest now and anytime I can find cheerwine I buy it! Usually only at like a Cracker Barrel in a bottle but I’ll take it. Reminds me of childhood
JanaKaySTL@reddit
We can find it in St Louis. Good stuff! My brother gave me a few of the pineapple punch Cheerwine for Christmas because I’ve never seen that here.
SnapHackelPop@reddit
I’d heard about it and looked up the closest places by me who have it. Two spots up by my family. After helping my brother I found it, single bottles in a grab and go section. Good stuff! Didn’t taste too fake like other cherry sodas can
StrangerKatchoo@reddit
Lived in NC as a kid. We moved back north almost 40 years ago and I still miss it. My friend’s brother lives in NC and he picks me up a case whenever he visits him.
platoniclesbiandate@reddit
Cheerwine is from Salisbury, NC. Also the founding home of Food Lion.
One of my local bars serves Cheerwine and Jeagermesiter shots called Cherrybombs.
tarheel_204@reddit
Salisbury has some amazing BBQ too (my mom’s side is from there). Cheerwine and a chopped BBQ tray hits so different
Ogrimarcus@reddit
Only been in the last 8 years or so that we've started getting cheerwine in grocery stores in Virginia, my mom used to buy a ton of it everytime we went to see her family but now she can get it at the Harris Teeter.
Loisgrand6@reddit
What part of Virginia because I’ve seen it longer than 8 years ago
Ogrimarcus@reddit
I'm from the Hampton roads area, and I've lived in Richmond for the last decade and a bit.
It's possible it's been around longer and I just didn't notice, I know it could have been in stores back home longer and I wouldn't have known because I had to tell my mother about it once I started seeing it in Richmond. And even then she didn't believe me until I went to the Harris Teeter in her town and sent her a picture of it on the shelves.
crapbear83@reddit
NC over here. My husband is from Salisbury NC. Cheerwine is like the elixir of life over here. There is an annual Cheerwine Festival. This year it's May 16. All downtown Salisbury. Food Lion and Bojangles also help sponser the event (also NC o.g.). Check it out for real
TempAcct724@reddit
I’ve found Cheerwine in California and Colorado so it’s not as regional as it used to be.
Intelligent-Invite79@reddit
We gave it at Cracker Barrel, it’s delicious!
garretmander@reddit
Oddly enough at least 20 years ago, it was also super popular in parts of norway.
But so are/were confederate flags and other less neat parts of the southeast.
Suedeonquaaludes@reddit
Omg my husband and I are pharologists. We study lighthouses. Take pics, paint pics, write articles, write grants to save some on doomsday lists and we were in NC and we were in a restaurant and the girl was like what do you want to drink, we got cheerwine. We got the cheerwine and fell in love.
myotheroneders@reddit
I'm from eastern PA and Cheerwine was a staple at my grandparents house in the Poconos! One of my local grocery stores has a little section of soda in 6pack glass bottles and they have it. I don't drink soda much anymore but it's so refreshing to get once in a while!
otetrapodqueen@reddit
Yesss! I love cheerwine! when I lived in the PNW I could only find it at world market! I live in Indiana now and can sometimes find it. I'm from Tennessee tho
SnooAvocados6672@reddit
I’ve seen glass bottles of it at a grocery store in Alaska
Jessalopod@reddit
I live in Oregon and I can get Cheerwine at my local Kroger's affiliate. It's with the novelty sodas.
jackneefus@reddit
regional to the South east - Cheerwine
Yes, although sadly Kickapoo Joy Juice is no longer with us.
7thAndGreenhill@reddit
Sometimes I see 4packs of glass bottles in Supermarkets. But I can’t justify paying almost $10 for 4 sodas.
When we visit OBX I usually gorge myself on them
bigpeteontheweb@reddit
cheerwine slushies from the concessions stand at the pool in the summer hit incredibly hard growing up in NC
kefefs_v2@reddit
I'm sure I've seen it once or twice in Michigan, but it's definitely not common here.
HackDaddy85@reddit
We’ve had it in grocery stores in Ohio for about a decade now. Before that it was pretty common still at barbecue places.
ceanahope@reddit
I can occasionally find it in California. It's an interesting soda. A little too sweet for my taste, but if I had tried it as a kid, I'm sure I would have loved it.
BladePrice@reddit
Dr. Pepper is fairly US exclusive. It was a struggle finding it in Spain and it wasn’t as good. UK Dr. Pepper > Poland Dr. Pepper.
Was interesting to learn. I’ve had UK coke before and it’s so much better than coke in the states. I’d have thought UK Dr. Pepper would follow.
witchy12@reddit
Michigan (home state): Rock n' Rye and Red Pop
Budget-Sherbert-4016@reddit
And then the Vernors when you're sick
PandaBean1@reddit
Definitely Vernors! (Ginger ale for those who don’t know)
GrilledCheeseMnky@reddit
Ginger ale that will slap you in the face to say hello!
MyWorserJudgement@reddit
I've been able to approximate Vernors, even the nose-tingling, by adding a dash of cayenne pepper to a glass of ordinary Canada Dry ginger ale. I was so surprised when I learned that real Vernors isn't made with that.
Mackie_Messy@reddit
I'm having flashbacks to lying down on the couch with a bad cold, sipping Vernor's, eating pretzel sticks, and watching the Price is Right.
MyWorserJudgement@reddit
Mister Salty pretzel sticks?
Loisgrand6@reddit
It was ginger ale or sprite for my kids and TPIR and a soap opera if they stayed with my mother while I worked
ThisIsMockingjay2020@reddit
I couldn't find it in WA and I can't find it in TX, either. Man, do I miss Vernors.
Loisgrand6@reddit
I’m in Virginia. A nice clothing store sales lady offhandedly said her husband used to work for them. I think she was from PA. I bought some and love it
Oenonaut@reddit
For a long time you could get Vernors at Kroger, but with all the new lines of micro and probiotic brands I’m not sure that’s still true
Loisgrand6@reddit
Kroger is where I used to buy it from. I haven’t looked lately though
_badwithcomputer@reddit
Mixed with milk
sheimeix@reddit
Hell, Vernors when you aren't sick too. I can find it here in upstate NY every once in a while, but I usually grab a couple cases when I visit family in MI.
shelwood46@reddit
Our A-Treat vending machine vendor (in NJ of course) also had Vernors, it was... weirdly floral? But I visit friends in MI every summer and always bring back RedPop and Rock & Rye, and some Towne Cream soda.
Gloomy-Albatross-843@reddit
Vernors made it to MN! I could not have been more exited whent that happened!
Zappagrrl02@reddit
Vernor’s isn’t really pop, it’s medicine😂
SphericalCrawfish@reddit
All pop was once upon a time.
JefeRex@reddit
One of Michigan’s outstanding cultural contributions to humanity.
Arleare13@reddit
You can occasionally find Vernors in NYC in specialty stores. I got some just last week!
JayPlays40k@reddit
And in Texas, HEB sells it! It's been a staple of my household for years (my dad's from Michigan and made sure I was raised properly).
JBoy9028@reddit
Vernors Black Cherry is a Michigan exclusive.
eac555@reddit
I've had Vernors but Vernors Black Cherry sound delicious.
goblue2354@reddit
My uncle has lived in California for decades and every time he comes home to visit, he stocks up on Rock n’Rye, Koegels, and for my real local people, cream sticks from Donna’s Donuts.

Michigander here! Got the shock of my life in London a few years ago when i popped into an American candy novelty store and was greeted by an entire wall of Faygo, some flavors I’d never seen before! I gladly spent waaaaaay too much money on a couple.
ElBurroEsparkilo@reddit
I was on the West Coast a while back and was surprised to see a Faygo display- the store dude helpfully informed me it was a really local specialized brand from the Midwest that makes some really great flavors. Also they were selling single serving bottles for like $7.
Apocalyptic0n3@reddit
Anytime I go back to Michigan, I go through an unhealthy amount of Rock n' Rye. It's the thing I miss most.
Formal-Telephone5146@reddit
I only seen Faygo in Michigan and Ohio
s0laris0@reddit
I was able to find it in a select few stores and gas stations in western PA years ago, rural king for some reason always had red pop?
Loisgrand6@reddit
Sam’s club used to sell Faygo in my area of Virginia
botulizard@reddit
You know what's funny? A not-insignificant number of people outside Michigan think Faygo isn't real and that it's something the Insane Clown Posse made up.
Lerastma@reddit
I had no idea ICP was still relevant.
botulizard@reddit
I don't think they are, but their whole thing with Faygo was pretty memorable, so among people who were around for it, the association is still there.
Capable-Society-2043@reddit
I forgot about Red Pop. Thank you for bringing back that memory and the taste of the memory.
Dragosal@reddit
Rock n' Rye is the best faygo flavor.
(Also from MI)
coronarybee@reddit
Noooo def Red Pop!
metalbees@reddit
Yeah no, rock n rye is like if red pop and cream soda banged
coronarybee@reddit
Incorrect! Rock n Rye is only good until you turn 8 or so
metalbees@reddit
If you drank any of them much past 8 you probably have diabeetus now
Stan_Deviant@reddit
Agreed (from Wisconsin which also gets to enjoy your word pop)
assholetax21@reddit
I wish I could get Faygo where I live. That diet grape soda lives in my dreams.
Quirky-Nerp4089@reddit
That's not exclusive to Michigan. I've seen them both in PA for over 40 years.
witchy12@reddit
I mean they originally were, Faygo is a Michigan based company. Even now it's pretty much only states near Michigan.

I don't live there anymore, but I miss Ale8 from my time in Kentucky. Specifically Diet Ale8, because I can find the regular in some stores out here with the "fancy" bottle sodas, but never the diet.
justdisa@reddit
The PNW has a bunch of small-ish soda makers, but Marionberry Creme and Wild Huckleberry flavors seem the most local.
ASeaWolf@reddit
Jones soda was the first one to come mind! But only to realize later it was founded in Vancouver BC! 😆
justdisa@reddit
Eh. It's part of the same bioregion. 😂 And they're based in Seattle now.
The PNW also has Bedford's Sodas, Orca Beverage, and Talking Rain (that one surprised me). I'm sure there are more, but I'd have to dig to find a good list.
ASeaWolf@reddit
Ok, I'm glad I don't like a complete idiot!
Oh yeah, Talking Rain! Used to love those.
justdisa@reddit
Okay. More: Crater Lake Soda, Rachel's Ginger Beer, Hotlips Soda, Simple Goodness Soda Shop, Cascade Ice, Seattle Soda, and Merchant's Craft. Still not comprehensive.
I am starting to feel like the PNW has as many craft soda companies as it does craft breweries.
MeyerOverton@reddit
Hotlips raspberry soda was amaaaaaaaaazing. It was like drinking a liquid, perfectly ripe raspberry! But I think they stopped making it and most of the other soda flavors besides ginger ale in 2024 😭
ASeaWolf@reddit
Ah, thats a nice list! When I can get back home to visit, I need to get reintroduced to some of these.
You aren't wrong, the PNW really does well in the craft scene.
DubiousSquid@reddit
I love the wild huckleberry soda

Green River is a lime flavored soda that I don't think I've seen outside of Illinois. Maybe they have it in Wisconsin and Indiana too?
DonkeyHair@reddit
We had an old Creamery in Palo Alto, CA that sold that. Tasty soda!
hewhoisneverobeyed@reddit
Never in s can or bottle, but these were common on the menu in restaurants and cafes in NE Iowa in the ‘70s and ‘80s.
ChaoticAggro@reddit
There is a drive through burger shack in Seattle that carries it. I was totally under the impression it was referencing the green river here.
bananachickenfoot@reddit
I was scrolling to look for green river! I used to have them as a treat as a kid in the 90s out here in Washington state but I haven’t seen them anywhere in decades. Such a treat!
Catpaws335@reddit
Green River was the one I thought of, I’m from IL lol.
Although I usually just see it around St Pat’s here in the Chicago suburbs.
Zenthane@reddit
We have it around Milwaukee. (Not a fan)
rabidrabbitkisses@reddit
Some older places in Hawaii carry green river
basedkenshiro@reddit
I’ve seen it in Wisconsin
Sweet_Safe1428@reddit
It was national and extremely popular back in the old soda fountain days. I saw it in high school in NE at a retro café
botulizard@reddit
I think I remember reading that John Fogerty was so fond of it that the CCR song of the same name was actually titled after the soda.
Stephmarlowe11@reddit
I miss having Green River on St Patrick's Day since moving to the Twin Cities.
LemonBerryCake@reddit
This is the first one that came to mind for me too

HarlequinKOTF@reddit
Never heard of it. I grew up in Southeast Wisconsin.
Uhhlaneuh@reddit

Uhhlaneuh@reddit
If you follow Maxx Velocity on YouTube, he has live updates of all the storms in the Midwest at the moment. I was surprised that Wisconsin did much worse than Illinois last week.
HarlequinKOTF@reddit
I've seen his stuff before. He has a pretty good track record. One issue being on YouTube is during the big storms if the internet or power go out... poof
Uhhlaneuh@reddit

KrispyAvocado@reddit
They had it in Hawaii, too
RemonterLeTemps@reddit
It's produced in Wisconsin now (by Sprecher), so it might be available up there. But usually only around St. Patrick's Day
Muppet-Ball@reddit
It's actually made by Sprecher in Milwaukee. I just went on that factory tour and I think they bought it recently. I've seen it alongside their stuff a few places in Grand Rapids.
DadPuncher69@reddit
Yes they've made it easier to find even in the Chicago area. I'm glad they bought it.

Ale 8 one. Made in Ky
leannmanderson@reddit
And drunk in parts of Missouri, mostly in the east. Never actually tried it myself.
itsatrapp71@reddit
The original flavor is ginger ale plus some other fruit flavors mixed. It does make a good alcohol mixer.
leannmanderson@reddit
So is it just pronounced Ale 8 One? Because my rebus trained mind wants to pronounce it ail-ay-shun, like the word "elation" but from ginger ale, so alation.
itsatrapp71@reddit
Yup just ale eight one. Supposed to sound like a " a late one" if you rush it.
leannmanderson@reddit
I feel like I need to try it.
Saltpork545@reddit
I moved to SW Indiana a couple of years ago and this is my preferred regional soda. I buy ale 8 zero(I don't drink full sugar soda) in bottles and have like 4 a week.
Ski is fine, I get it, Ale 8 is good. If I ever move away I will miss it. It's like if Mt Dew was made for adults and not neon green. I like the mix of ginger ale and citrus. It goes very well in the summer time with a jalapeno pimento cheese sandwich.

Saltpork545@reddit
Ski is super popular in the Evansville metro area and tri-state. So Henderson/Evansville/S Illinois. It's one of a few of the food culture things adopted by the area.

SW Indiana here as well (EVV). Schnucks carries Ale 8 and Ale 8 zero both. I always grab one every time I go in (which is not often, since Schnucks is overpriced AF).
Saltpork545@reddit
Check Walmart. I get Ale 8 zero bottles from the east side Evansville WM and Boonville WM. Like 5 bucks for a six pack.
RadioBoy93@reddit
Nice! I work very close to the east side WM. Looks like I may have to pop in after work.
bluegrass502@reddit
Every time I head to eastern kentucky, I gotta stop at the Speedway in Winchester. It's right next to the plant, and it's the only place I've found where you can get an Ale8 slushy

I have seen it sold at Cracker Barrels in the gift shop in states where it isn’t normally sold.
labe225@reddit
I'd sometimes use it as a mixer for bourbon. I called the drink a Winchester.
bowman297@reddit
I have always heard it called a Kentucky creek water
Mission_Lock_6699@reddit
A restaurant in Lexington used to carry Makers and Ale 8 a Double-wide.

I can't wait for the Pawpaw one to come back. I missed it last year and really wanted to try it.
Kscarpetta@reddit
They were at the Farmers Market last year in Winchester and I got to try it there and get their souvenir cups!
Then we went and bought a bunch(like 6 packs of it) and we hoarded that last one as long as we could. It is sooooo good. I hate their other flavors that isn't original but they done great with the pawpaw flavor.
WingHuge2185@reddit
Yeah, I'm watching out for this too. My stepdaughter in Ashland loved it, but we could only get one four-pack last year

Maybe I'll start a company and make it real, it’ll taste like shit but in Maryland we’re so loyal to old bay and our flag we’ll make it a success. 🤣

I’d buy it! You could probably use it for some cocktail…

Not a flavor, but a brand - Sprecher root beer is a local WI brand, and every brand's root beer is a little different.
vodiak@reddit
I've found it at Aldi in Tennessee.
_sweetpeaches_@reddit
The common denominator is Germans
inbigtreble30@reddit
I love Aldi's wildly random specialty items.
vodiak@reddit
It's the best at Christmas time for European treats.
majesticrhyhorn@reddit
You can find it in Texas! Bigger HEBs carry it and same with Spec’s, a regional liquor store
poisonedkiwi@reddit
Hijacking this comment to mention Jolly Good as well (cherry is my favorite)
NotAurelStein@reddit
Available throughout MN too
Plastic_Case_574@reddit
It’s common in Michigan
Kind_Dragonfruit_925@reddit
Sprecher root beer is so good! Very vanilla-y. Even though I moved away, I can still get it at Menards.

I remember when I was a kid Dr Pepper was rare outside of Texas…: but not anymore. The real ones know that the Dublin Dr Pepper is still the real thing
Mysterious-Cod-5767@reddit
When were you a kid? It’s been available nationally for a very long time. My mom drank it as a kid in Kentucky in like the 1950s🤷♀️
Appropriate_Park313@reddit
Was told it wasnt sold in California as a kid in the 80s.
Mysterious-Cod-5767@reddit
Don’t know about California in the early 80s. I could find it there in the later 80s when I visited though🤷♀️

Full_Ear_7141@reddit
Growing up in both Metro East STL and Chicagoland, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Vess (pineapple flavor is primo) and Fitz’s outside of the STL area. I don’t think I’ve seen Green River outside Chicagoland or Sprecher’s outside of northern Illinois and Wisconsin. I think Sprecher’s is more widely distributed now though. A couple other brands that I have no idea the distribution on, but seem to have a hard time finding outside of the STL area would be anything bottled by Excel Bottling, especially Ski and Frostie’s.
leannmanderson@reddit
Fitz's and Vess have both made their way to the Springfield area, thankfully.
Effective-Ladder9459@reddit
I going to say Fitz's as well, though I'm not sure if we have a specific flavor that's unique to us. They have soooo many flavors.
Full_Ear_7141@reddit
Cardinal Cream maybe? I’m not sure if I’ve seen any fruity cream pops aside from that.
Effective-Ladder9459@reddit
Yeah that sounds like a good one. The last one I had was the Key Lime one. It was great.
enemydarksock@reddit
Ski is from my neck of the woods! I drink it daily. Frozen blueberry Ski icees some of the restaurants around here do are the best!!
Full_Ear_7141@reddit
Ooooo, I haven’t seen any restaurants with those. Do you have any recommendations? That sounds delicious. I only have Ski once in a while, but it wouldn’t be hard to rot my teeth out with cherry Ski.
stack_percussion@reddit
Dairy King in Trenton/Breese have SKI slushies with tons of different flavors you can add.
Full_Ear_7141@reddit
Thanks! I’ll definitely have to try it if I’m ever out that direction.
enemydarksock@reddit
And Kahunas in Greenville, IL. You can sometimes find them at gas stations too. My favorite is adding blueberry but “rainbow Ski” with a bunch of different flavors is very popular.
Ski is 100% my vice, I had my first kidney stone at 20 years old while quarantining for COVID because I was drinking so much of it lmao
johndaylight@reddit
birch beer (around Pennsylvania)
leannmanderson@reddit
I love birch beer so much. Never been to Pennsylvania. Like Cheerwine, first found it in St. Louis.
CheeseMongoNJ@reddit
Where I am in NJ it's common, PA is maybe half an hour away.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
Pretty much limited to PA, Upstate NY and areas close to both.
VariegatedPlumage@reddit
NYC, too! We have it here!
TooManyDraculas@reddit
If you don't think Downstate NY borders Upstate NY, you might need to look at a map.
It's not something that was made much in and around NYC, though out on Long Island it was always a bit of thing. Primarily from influence from that "bits of New England part". And there weren't really a lot of NYC based brands making it.
I grew up in the Metro area. When you could find it growing up it was usually Penn Dutch (Pennsylvania) or Adirondack (Upstate). And I don't think the last one even makes it anymore.
Even recently it's pretty much just Boylans, and they even label their red birch beer as "Philly style".
VariegatedPlumage@reddit
I definitely missed the last sentence of your post, lol!
I generally get Foxon’s in Queens, and usually the Boylan’s we get around here is the original, not the red.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
Foxon's is from CT.
And IIRC Boylans sold the Philly style before they introduced the brown one. I think they might have gotten some confused responses to it.
There's a whole regional divide on the color of this stuff. New England it tends to be clear, Upstate NY brown, and PA is usually a very dark red but rarely a insanely bright blue for some reason.
Independent-Mud-9597@reddit
In eastern pa at least the most common are red birch beer which most people consider the "normal", while white birch beer is also sold it jas a much stronger minty flavor. I've heard of brown birch beer but I don't think of ever seen it sold. And my local grocery store has an entire section of just different birch beer products.
VariegatedPlumage@reddit
Yes, I know Foxon’s is from CT, and I am aware of the regional divide, my family is from Western PA. The question was what is exclusive to your region, not what is produced in your region.
OwlFreak@reddit
Growing up, my favorite place to get birch beer on Long Island was the Old Bethpage Village Restoration. They sold it at the bar by the country shop, and it was delicious! I'm always disappointed in the canned/bottled versions- they're almost always too sweet for me.
CheeseMongoNJ@reddit
Old Bethpage! Wow! I haven't thought of that place in AGES! We moved from the Island in 1986.
VariegatedPlumage@reddit
YESSS Old Bethpage! I got to milk a goat there when I was a little kid and loved the birch beer!
-Boston-Terrier-@reddit
A very, very little bit of a thing.
I've had birch beer but I couldn't tell you a single restaurant or even grocery store where I could find it with any real confidence.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
I had little trouble finding it. Most king kullens, IGAs and beer distributors stocked it. It wasn't exactly in every store though.
A lot of the museums and shit flat out made it. Some one in another comment already mentioned Old Bethpage.
-Boston-Terrier-@reddit
I was going to comment that I’m pretty sure Old Bethpage had it but didn’t feel like explaining what that was if anyone asked lol. That’s definitely the last place I had it.
I could definitely find it. I just meant that I don’t know of any place (outside Old Bethpage) that I’m sure has it. It’s not like cola where I know every place has it.
CheeseMongoNJ@reddit
I work in a supermarket. Tomorrow when I go in I'll get a pic of the ones we carry.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
Why would I care what brands your supermarket carries?
NJ is an area that borders both upstate NY and PA. I'm aware you can buy it there.
You don't generally see it in areas outside of the specific region in question.
Max_AC_@reddit
I've bought birch beer at a Frys (Kroger) in AZ

DecadesLaterKid@reddit

fattycatty6@reddit
We have Birch Beer in CT and a few local soda companies make it.
botulizard@reddit
Yeah I always associated it with New England. Aside from one of the Connecticut brands (Foxon Park), the only cans of birch beer I can picture off the top of my head are the store brands from Demoulas and Shaw's.
nomuggle@reddit
The white variety is more New England and the red variety is more MidAtlantic. It’s actually believe to have originated in Pennsylvania by the PA Dutch (Amish) communities.
fattycatty6@reddit
Polar is big on the Birch Beer and we also have Avery's Soda out of New Britain CT.
botulizard@reddit
Oh, I didn't know Polar made one too. Maybe I'll see it near me someday, Polar has expanded a fair bit and I see at least the seltzers pretty often, sometimes even Orange Dry my beloved.
fattycatty6@reddit
Yes, Polar has always had 2 liters in Birch Beer too, while a lot are 1 liters or individuals. Oh! Stewart's does a 4 pack of brochures beer bottles too! Although Stewart's Oramge and cream or Key Lime will ALWAYS be superior!
botulizard@reddit
Stewart's orange is lovely!
kruszer99@reddit

fattycatty6@reddit

cstar4004@reddit
I was just going to say we have it, too! But then I saw you were from PA. Anywhere in the NJ/ PA/ NY tri-state will be similar to each other.
shelwood46@reddit
Yeah, you can get it in kegs/barrels from most liquor stores, so it is usually the non-alcoholic option at big community gatherings like parades and stuff. Both NJ and eastern PA (I'd say Birch Beer and, lesser so, Black Cherry soda).
Outlaw_Josie_Snails@reddit
Yep, it is commonly sold in southern NJ (Hank's, Pennsylvania Dutch, Stewart’s Root Beer stands, Boylan Bottling Co, etc.)
CheeseMongoNJ@reddit
There's a Stewart's not far from here. Haven't been able to get their ginger beer lately.
WhatABeautifulMess@reddit

For those that don't think colas are interchangeable, RC (Royal Crown) Cola. My Grandad (born 1901) used to exclaim "gimme an arra-cee cola and an 'ol Moon Pie".

for good reason. It sucks
Dorkinfo@reddit
I know of three places near me that have Moxie and aren’t Cracker Barrel. I’m in GA.
DadPuncher69@reddit
That's pretty cool. I don't know of any places that sell it near me here in Chicago.
Dorkinfo@reddit
The places I know are two vintage shops and a place that sells an array of hot sauce, soda, and produce. I don’t think any are very known. But also I’ve had malort so maybe you just don’t get to have good stuff anymore.
DadPuncher69@reddit
I rarely go to places like that, so maybe it is available here and I just don't know it lol
Dorkinfo@reddit
Figured, it’s kind of an oddity to know in atl. I can tell you where to vintage shop then walk to a strip club, too.
Acrobatic-Tadpole-60@reddit
I’m a Maine native, and I was delighted to find a candy shop called Grandpa Joe’s when I was living in Pittsburgh that carried it.

Ewredditsucksnow@reddit
Cracker barrel used to sell them in individual glass bottles in their chains. Not sure if they still do but it was in the store area with the other "vintage" soda and candy.
botulizard@reddit
They still do, and I've also had good luck in like novelty/gift shops that have a drink cooler. Often enough there are regional or foreign soft drinks in there and if that's the case, they probably stock Moxie.
DadPuncher69@reddit

So a fizzy cherry limeade. But freshly made.

Mysterious-Cod-5767@reddit
A LONG time ago you mean? It began national distribution in the 70s🤣
Far-Radio8247@reddit
Barqs root beer? Barqs has been in all of New England for as far back as I can remember.
Smoopiebear@reddit
It was in PNW in the mid eighties at least- my brother hit me in the forehead with a can at my 6th birthday… it’s the only time had had ever thrown anything and hit a target. And I can remember my aunt screeching “he hit her with a can of Barqs!”😂😂
Calaveras-Metal@reddit
It was regional to just the mid south when I was growing up. Then they went national with Coca cola products in the 90s or early 2000s. But the last few years it seems they have been retreating from some markets.
A couple weeks ago I was at a Kroger and was surprised to see Barqs. But they only had 2 liters not cans or smaller bottles.
Crazy-Squash9008@reddit
It was earlier than that. It was the only root beer my best friend liked when we were kids in the late 80s in Pennsylvania.
Calaveras-Metal@reddit
that's wild.
I grew up with Barqs in the orange can. And for a while you could get Barqs cream soda, which was red for some reason. And they had something else like orange drink or lemon lime. I forget. I only ever got the red cream soda and the root beer.
They had an ad campaign for a while that it wasn't root beer actually, it's just Barqs.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
I don't think they got bought by Coke till around 2000. And national advertising campaigns started in the early 90s from what I recall.
Rootbeer in general seems to be getting less popular. Major companies have dropped a bunch of brands, and it's hard to find more than Mug in a lot of the country.
But by that same note there's a lot of smaller "premium" brands around these days.
ceanahope@reddit
I could get Barqs in Canada when I lived there. I'd say it's international.
eyetracker@reddit
It's been near-national since at least the 1990s. I've always understood "bite" to mean caffeine, but in some markets it has caffeine and in some it doesn't. Especially near Utah, though the church has since said it's okay so I'm not sure if their root beer is the same now.
Calaveras-Metal@reddit
Never seen Barqs without caffeine? Must be a LDS thing.
eyetracker@reddit
Yeah, in Mormon areas, but even so it might be harder to find caffeinated in certain markets even if you're looking for it. I think the soda fountain versions also may be decaf even if the cans there are.

Polar is really huge in New England in a way that I haven’t seen other places. At my local grocery store in New Hampshire we have at least 35 Polar flavors at any given time, sometimes more depending on the season. This includes regular flavors, seltzer-ade (also seltzer, they’re lemon or lime flavors like starfuit lemonade), kid seltzers, expedition flavors, and seasonal flavors. That’s not including polar tonic & sodas. We’re really serious about our flavor selection.

When I visit my family that now lives in South Jersey, there is this soda syrup called "Boost". I have never tried it, but apparently it existed before the nutrional drink they sell in pharmacies, and they made some deal with that company that they could use the name as long as the original Boost could still be sold exclusively in restaurants in their region (I used to live about 30 minutes north and had never heard of it). So places offer it premixed as a soft drink like lemonade or in shakes (icees?) and also you can buy the syrup in gallon jugs. It's very strange.

My experience in the south is that you can find it okay (usually in two liter bottles). In the Midwest, I saw it maybe twice, in the northeast, I don't think I've seen it at all. Where I grew up in California, it was in every single grocery store, cans, bottles, whatever.

I need a Mormon to explain to me like I’m 5 why the caffeine from a coffee is forbidden, but the caffeine from a soda is fine.
Holiday_Actuator2215@reddit
Cult rule # 1 make up random rules and see who will follow them. The ones that don’t question your asinine rules are your new followers.
yoironfrog@reddit
It's because it's not about the caffeine, it's about whether it's tea or coffee or not. There isn't a specific reason but tea, coffee, alcohol, and tobacco consumption are not allowed. There all part of what's known as "The Word of Wisdom" which was originally a sort of health guideline to follow but during the prohibition era became a requirement to enter the highest degree of heaven.
Bright_Ices@reddit
Except the word of wisdom advises against “hot drinks” not tea or coffee. It also says mild barley drinks (beers) are acceptable and people should eat minimal meat except in winter. But it’s not really about what the WoW says. It’s only about obeying what the current leader’s interpretation of the WoW is.
Bright_Ices@reddit
You don’t need a Mormon to explain it. It’s simply about obedience. The rules change all the time, but the emphasis is obeying the current leader of the church no matter what. That’s all it is.
Bright_Ices@reddit
Look for Taproot, an actually local soda company. They make several flavors including Blackberry Mint, which is unique to them, as far as I can tell.

Not a soda, but my my section of NJ we have Boost. It's very popular here. I don't really get it, it just tastes like drinking syrup. You can also get it as a slushie.
ParadoxicalFrog@reddit
They're not flavors, but there are some sodas you can only get in the South. Namely, RC Cola and Cheerwine. RC (Royal Crown) is a cola with a distinct flavor from Coke or Pepsi; the "third party candidate" in the soda wars, if you will. Not well known, but has its following, including me. Cheerwine is a cherry soda; some say it tastes like cough syrup, but I like it. You can get it from the fountain at a regional restaurant chain called Cook-Out, and I highly recommend eating there if you get a chance. It's an extremely American experience.

Ale 8? Big Red? Rock n Rye?
RepublicOk6752@reddit
Rock n rye is often described as a sweet cherry cream pop made by the Michigan company Faygo. But the flavor is difficult to describe. The story I was told growing up in Michigan was rock candy dissolved in rye whiskey was popular in the early 1900’s. When prohibition hit in the 1930’s Faygo developed a pop that duplicated the flavor but didn’t have alcohol. Hence the name Rock n Rye.
