What is one of your favorite album covers? I’ve always loved this one from Van Halen.

This album is from 1973. While I listened to it because my dad played it, I don't consider it Gen X. Pink Floyd is definitely boomer.
ihatepickingnames_@reddit
The question was favorite album covers without reference to a time period. I was in high school when The Wall and The Final Cut were released, both of which had a large influence on me, so I wouldn't consider Pink Floyd an exclusive boomer band.
italianish13@reddit
Fair enough. I was thinking Gen X subreddit so I was being narrow minded lol. My dad's favorite band of all time.

Boston is a classic beautiful cover. I was tempted to go with Scorpions In Trance (all good tracks but the mods might object to the obscured nudity)
Intelligent_Use6443@reddit
Maybe common knowledge, but new to me. The Boston cover is a guitar upside down

At 45 years old now it's a little worn.
ELO - Time 1981
DirkBelig@reddit
My first concert was ELO for that album in November 1981.
MajYoshi@reddit
Nice! I loved ELO but never had an opportunity to see them live.
Until just two years ago during their final, Over and Out tour. Somehow, somehow scored front row for it. Was an incredible show.
Where did you see them and how was the show? I mean, if you can remember back that far, that is. I barely remember last Saturday.
DirkBelig@reddit
It was at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena - home of the NHL Red Wings from 1979-2017; demolished in 2019-20 and a hotel built on the site - and Hall & Oates opened. I'm sure I was overwhelmed by the novelty of a first concert and my favorite band to boot, but recall it was a good show.
They had a robot come out with a blinking mouth to blink sync the Prologue from Time in the darkness and then the lights came up and the band was revealed and they did "Twilight." It was the original band minus the two cellists. (Lynne, Bevan, Groucutt, Randy, Kaminski) My friend's dad took us to the show and we were all spazzing out about it. We were HS freshmen. (You know those buttons Gen Xers have that say, "I may be old, but I saw all the cool bands"? That's me somewhat.)
I debated going to the farewell show and looked on StubHub for tix and they never really got cheap enough and someone had mentioned Lynne was lipsyncing and not really playing much and since it was basically him fronting a tribute band I skipped it. Also, the set list was too heavy on earlier stuff and I wanted more New World Record thru Time stuff. A friend saw him a couple years earlier and liked it.
MajYoshi@reddit
Dude that's awesome. I had no clue they had a robot come out! I would have been spazzing out too.
Appreciate you sharing your tale.
I wished, too, for a bit more around Time, Secret Messages, or even Balance of Power (love that album). But for my only ELO show it was a pretty cool experience.
I'll leave you with this to say thanks.
DirkBelig@reddit
Since video cameras weren't something you could slip in your pocket then I can't find any video of the opening but someone has this tiny clip of the end of the show: https://youtu.be/gy_-54V4LB0?si=wt_3LYnvLZ59yQVu

That album sounded so futuristic when I first heard it
MajYoshi@reddit
Look at you now. Just on the border of your waking mind. A livin thing. A 21st Century man...
You became that future Jeff saw.
I mean as best we could, I suppose. At least we don't have to worry about anyone breaking out of Satellite Two just yet.
Remember to keep a penny in your pocket. \ \ \ The end of Prolog leading into Twilight (the witchy laughter part) has always reminded me of the movie Time Bandits for some reason.
'81 was a pretty good year.

I loved this album so hard.
I think it’s because we had a very similar theater in my hometown with a similar story. It had its heyday in the 40s and 50s and slowly fell into disrepair until it was just a busted shell of the glorious, historic theater it had been.
Then a local dude cobbled together some investment capital and restored the place to its previous jaw dropping beauty. And they started hosting the Miss (State) pageant there, bringing in money hand over fist to the community.
“Tonight’s the night
We make history…”

I did a paper on the PMRC in the 9th grade. My grade was dropped down to a B because it was way too long. I just couldn't stop writing about what a truly awful bitch she was and all the horrible things that the organization was trying to do to my music. I could have written a novel.

That Van Halen album cover is forever burned into my memory, but I don’t think I ever listened to a track of it. My family moved as I entered second grade, and my birthday that year was my first in the new school. It was early in the school year, so I didn’t know the kids who came all that well. One new friend got me this album on cassette as a present, but it was in this bizarre plastic sleeve I couldn’t figure out how to open. So it sat in my room for years, as I thought “one day I’ll figure that thing out.” It wasn’t until middle school when I started going to the mall and the music stores that I realized it was the anti-theft device and the kid had stolen it. Never managed to extract it from the case, so I guess the moral of the story is bang-up job, anti-theft designer.

I caught my uncle snickering about this back in 84 when my cousin and i were talking about how crazy it was to have a smoking baby on the cover.

the hieroglyphs on Iron Maiden's Powerslave (1984) album cover were sourced and placed by the artist, Derek Riggs, who has explained that they are not a continuous, coherent story but rather a collection of phrases from Egyptian texts.
According to Riggs, the inscriptions were taken from a book on hieroglyphics he used for reference to match the Egyptian theme.
Here is the breakdown of the "translation" and hidden messages:

I just told this story a week ago or so in another thread. My mother threw away my cassette of 1984 because she thought this album cover was sacrilegious. It wasn't a Satanic panic or anything as she didn't care about the songs on it. She just hated the cover.
So I went and bought the cassette again and took out the cover and just chunked it (sadly).
