Trust me I worked for every single penny but honestly not bad for two weeks
Dependent_Bath_4851@reddit
Anybody have any tips for someone just starting out? I recently got my cdl 6 months ago and have no clue which companies to apply for. I’m in the NorCal/Sac area
FlintIron@reddit
If you get tired of slinging cases, come join us in LTL. You can make that in linehaul. I’m a TX driver and my current lane is 604 miles. I build one set of doubles a day, drive from home terminal to lane terminal and back. I make $2638 gross a week.
RodG4358@reddit
Who you with?
FlintIron@reddit
I don’t publicly shill for my company because all LTL companies are different and what’s a fit for me maybe not a fit for you. I did research on all the companies and can tell you Old Dominion, Saia, South Eastern, FedEx freight, Estes Express etc are all on par with being 100k a year in linehaul. ABF pays less but is union with union health insurance and a pension. Of course the number one in most people’s minds is UPS if you can get it. They all have positives and negatives. Sonority is a big deal in LTL. Extraboard is usually a starting point, some use call blocks like FedEx some like Estes give you a start day and time and your OTR for 5 days a week. Depending on where you live there are regional LTL carriers too, however, more and more are being bought out by the big ones. There are LTL drivers on YouTube as well. My favorite is Trucking Through Life because Chuck shows both the linehaul and city side before Estes shut him down but allowed what was there to stay up.
KingHauler@reddit
Hell of a lot more than I got at Coremark for the same work.
That said, word of advice. Get out as soon as you can. That type of work destroys your body. Im 32 and this work caused me to herniated a disk and eroded the shit out of my knee cartilage.
No_Leadership99@reddit
Im at core mark we do so much heavy work and get paid shit that’s what I believe.
KingHauler@reddit
Coremark ain't worth it man. Get the fuck out. Shit company, shit pay, shit trucks, shit work. I fucking HATE gas stations dude. ESPECIALLY fasmarts, minutemen, and FUCKING MURPHYS.
Its been 5 years since I worked at coremark and still won't go to those fuckin stores.
No_Leadership99@reddit
I agree man it doesn’t worth it at all, I just wanted to try because people say it’s a lot of money in the food service well I haven’t seen it yet. I am trying to get out and looking for LTL jobs.
KingHauler@reddit
Go for EPES, best driving job i ever had. Wish I never left, now I can't get back in.
RodG4358@reddit
What were you doing?
KingHauler@reddit
I was contracted to caterpillar, working their yard, picking up parts, delivering tractors.
Famous_Reference_587@reddit
I am in food service …unload 3 trailers by hand a week and workout as well ….i dont think you take care of your body if this hurts you at that young of an age.
taco_2325@reddit
Sorry but I hate to disagree. I’m ASSUMING you must not be active outside of work? I work for the same company OP does, hit the gym five days a week and max out my clock every week and at 36 y.o I have never felt better. Your body adapts to the work load day in day out with same repetitive motions. Staying active outside of work with proper nutrition and enough sleep will help you stay fit and your body has no choice but to keep adapting. At the division I work at there are plenty of older (mid 50s) but fit guys not bc of the work but bc of the active lifestyle they lead outside of work.
texastruckin@reddit
I’m 28, Been at it for 3 almost 4 years, a little sore yes but I am very conscious about how I pick things up etc. I don’t overload my dolly anymore. There’s a few 55+ yr old guys at my job and most of them don’t limp or have bad knees etc. if you take care of your body your body will take care of you. I kinda prefer this job to sitting on your ass for hours on end. I’d rather ruin my body by exercising and being sore than get obese and out of shape. Now granted I’m still under 30 but yeah… I don’t understand how people can sit for 6-7 hours with the occasional pit stop and be away from home etc.
Sharp_Requirement_50@reddit
Yea I agree with you, I been doing it for 8 years now and I’m perfectly fine. Never injuries myself, I’d actually argue that I’m in better shape now than before. Also hit the gym 3-4 times a week also.
Deadbeatdone@reddit
Hurry up and wait business. Ya just gotta keep your mind occupied. Sitting for that long isn't good for the body either its not something you fuck up once and you're done but it creeps in until you see a doctor and they tell you you have blood pressure and weight issues. Either extreme could stand to learn abit from the other.
texastruckin@reddit
For sure. I just think a lot of people who haven’t done food/grocery view it as the most Intense work out there lol. I choose smaller routes to get home earlier. I probably work 50-55 hour work weeks m-f and most of my route are under 10,000lbs. Summertime it picks up but still isn’t too bad.
Deadbeatdone@reddit
Its all relative. I do no touch freight but im pretty lazy and make more than flipping burgers sitting in a truck playing videogames while getting unloaded its not as much as someone who touches freight but its enough. It just all depends on how motivated one might be. Figure it all levels out between the labor and the qualifications. I work 70 everywhere week tho.
RodG4358@reddit
How often are you home ?
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Daily
East_Indication_7816@reddit
But you damage your body lifting and stacking heavy stuffs . You will need that money for your surgery once you get an injury . No thanks

Good for you!
kinglouie1992@reddit
Otr?
Equivalent-Issue2627@reddit
How did you only pay 600 in taxes
tlowe84@reddit
So you only getting taxed $626? If I make this much the government and state are taking like a combined $1000+ from me single no kids filing. I work at McLane Minnesota Grocery only making like $1300-$1400 a week working Wednesday and Saturday only on my current bid no extra work at this place. Since it's not that understaffed and we are a Grocery/food service division now.
JamFD3S@reddit
So you only work 2 days a week and are grossing 1300-1400?? Man thats an absolute dream job. My first CDL gig working OTR flatbed i only grossed 1300 on average and thats being out across the country, busting your azz in -10 degrees to +100 degree weather, traping, strapping, chaining etc.
tlowe84@reddit
Yup its probably like 1,300-1,500 a week I dispatch on Wednesday at 2am and back at the yard by 5pm then I dispatch on Saturday at 1am and back at the yard by 4-430pm. Im single no kids lol I wanna work more than this but we pick bid routes in order of seniority and Im down at the bottom so this is my current schedule.
JamFD3S@reddit
Hey man, I definitely understand wanting to work more, higher paychecks, save more money, retire sooner, etc. but honestly, enjoy all this free time while you have it you are making 70k a year working 2 days a week, you can't put a price on having a life, especially in the trucking business!
oasuke@reddit
Same, I was grossing $1300 a week from McLane. I've made more money than that at every trucking job I've had, and that includes benefits.
Btomesch@reddit
He’s not signed up for benefits or 401k yet.
Exnoss69@reddit
Where is this at? I just started delivering beer but i see McLane all the time. Didnt know it paid this well
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Midwest, Chicago area. It's extremely labor intensive but yea the pay is pretty good
Exnoss69@reddit
Bro beer is labor intensive and im not near this lol. Ill keep an eye out for position in my area. Youre home daily right?
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Yea home daily
JamFD3S@reddit
do you have to work weekends since you are newer?
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Never Saturday. But occasionally Sunday
SweetandsourMcnugget@reddit
For real dude I do route delivery for a certain soda company and I work like a dog for less than this 😭
Even-Response4107@reddit
You do food service ? Or grocery ? I work for Mclane in Houston and we do food service.
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Grocery
tlowe84@reddit
How many routes you do this week? And you on extra board?
Exnoss69@reddit
Can u explain extra board and bid driver?
tlowe84@reddit
At McLane extra board means you are on-call 24/7 you cover driver call offs do extra routes or back hauls that need to be covered and even be a yard spotter for the day If they need someone to do that. At McLane they have a guaranteed weekly minimum $1250 that they will pay you if you don't make more than that $1250 during that week but on extra board you have to call into dispatch between 12am-7am Monday-Friday and ask if they have any work for you to do. If you don't call in you get the day off but it disqualifies you from getting that $1250 minimum if you dont make more than that during that week. Bid driver just means you have a set schedule and route that you will do every week like currently Im a bid drivers and my two routes I do a week are on Wednesday and Saturday every 6 months we bid on routes and it goes in order of seniority also bid drivers dont have to call in If we make less than that $1250 we get it automatically but every bid route pays more than that so it's really for extra board guys who may only do 1 route one week and 2 the next week because everything was covered.
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Yea extra board. I did 4 routes both weeks. Trying to get 5 but we'll see
tlowe84@reddit
So that must have been solo routes? What you guys delivering to just Walgreens,Walmart,Family Dollar?
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Nah these were teams routes. Mostly 7-11, Walgreens, family dollar
TDOTBRO@reddit
I'm not familiar with Mclane, Do you stock the shelves too or to the docks?
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
No we just take the stuff in on dollys and set it down
TDOTBRO@reddit
Nice man. Get that money and a paid workout. Stay safe out there.
tlowe84@reddit
Those were team routes or solo?
Red_Febtober@reddit
Grocery here in Concord, with a side of Panera for food service. Good money, but you earn EVERY penny.
jawsytown@reddit
Yep, I’m at a certain pizza company and we are out there busting our asses 14 hours a day. I actually like the physical labor side of it
Wiserestman97@reddit
What does that mean? You unload yourself? Not a trucker but curious what the job entails other than driving
Exnoss69@reddit
Its mostly unloading. You barely drive lol
Red_Febtober@reddit
Unloading. The back of the trailer is where you make your money.
mydemonishot@reddit
Would you say it’s easy to overheat if you’re prone to it, like is most of the labor out in the elements? Chicago summers can be brutal just wondering
Btomesch@reddit
Lol so is beer. We had to take 160lb kegs upstairs and rotate the new product and old product. Scan, rip open boxes, fill store windows. Yours is kick and go. Only thing with beer was you got off work at a decent time.
Player2orNot@reddit
You were nice enough and rightfully proud of your pay to post so I will respond. McLane is a respectable company to work for but as you know the work is physically demanding. Stay focused on your career path and work towards it. McLane is a young man’s job.
tlowe84@reddit
Wish it was but all these old mfers! Won't at my division won't retire so I can get the better route packages.
Nerooooooooooo@reddit
You mean the gatekeepers😂🤣
tlowe84@reddit
Exactly 😂😂
DismalDog881@reddit
2 of my cousins worked for McLane and said the same thing. One is now a O.O. and the other works for Martin Brower.
JamFD3S@reddit
Ive always heard you bust you azz off at Mclane, but at the end of the day if they are compensating you properly then its totally worth it. Ive had multiple jobs where I was busting my azz off and didnt even gross half off that haha, thats when it becomes a problem.
Puzzleheaded_Way2605@reddit
Come to Walmart i make 500 less and don’t touch freight but i know guys who run grocery here and make 4,500 every two weeks
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
I don't mind touching freight. If I did I wouldn't be working for McLane
Electrical_Try2977@reddit
Not bad, keep us updated!
Downstream27@reddit
I’ve been at mclane for 5 years. You definitely work for every single penny you get.
Life-Excitement8217@reddit
I had an interview with them a skipped it my ass have a bad back lmaooo. Idk why I thought I couldn’t be able to stand to work for them.
That job is physically demanding
nortyflatz@reddit
Open a ROTH, now.
Cicero912@reddit
If thats going to be semi-consistent a traditional IRA would probably be better than a Roth IRA.
Same with ither retirement accounts.
Then if you want to really increase the benefits, invest 100% of the tax savings as well.
KatieTSO@reddit
Why would it be better to do traditional?
mcr0060@reddit
Lower the pre tax amount of your checks lowering your tax rate possibly you would have to do math I contribute to both a Roth and a traditional to the max amount per year have to traditional take enough to lower my tax bracket and the Roth for the rest that wouldn’t be effected. Since all gains on a Roth come out tax free on retirement, all taxes on a traditional are due upon withdrawal. Consult a fiduciary to get the best plan for your situation, remember a fiduciary works for your benefit by law a advisor gets benefits on what they push you into, so only a fiduciary can give you the best plan
KatieTSO@reddit
But the tax rate is progressive. You don't lose out by making $1 into the next tax bracket. Only that $1 is taxed higher.
I do Roth so I don't have to pay as much taxes when I'm old.
AgreeableClass5390@reddit
It wouldn’t be, imo. A Roth is so good that it has limits on how much you can put in every year, and typically it’s 6-7k from what I’ve seen.
So in this situation it would be best to max the Roth first, and then put leftover money into another savings account of some sort.
Not an expert but that’s my 2 cents
mcr0060@reddit
Depends Roth IRA, or a Roth 401k both exist both have different limits, I do a traditional, and Roth 401k and also a Roth IRA
KatieTSO@reddit
Agreed. I am currently doing roth only. If I ever make enough to afford maxing out, then I'll do traditional.
Cicero912@reddit
Since traditional takes off income at your top marginal rate, then fills it from the bottom at retirement, tax rates are what determines which you should choose.
Once you hit the 22/24% bracket, you start reaching the point where your required income to live in retirement will be lower than your current income, which would put you in a lower bracket.
If your tax bracket remains the same, there is no effective difference between a roth and traditional account, they both have the same future expected value.
If you want to hedge, you can have your 401k as traditional and IRA as roth.
ShoebillJoe@reddit
But don't you pay taxes on whatever you remove from a traditional IRA? So you pay taxes on the growth of a traditional but not on the growth of a ROTH. This makes ROTH better in all cases as long as you invest it and leave it in the account at least five years.
Cicero912@reddit
Say you pay a 20% marginal tax rate now and in retirement (i know thats not an actual bracket %), and have $100 of income you can invest. And you can invest in an asset that will average 6% per year in perpetuity, and have 40 years till you can withdraw.
Roth: First, you pay taxes on that $100 which brings you to $80. After 40 years your expected value would be 80 * 1.06^40, or $822.86. You can withdraw that amount tax free.
Traditional: You can immediately invest the income, lowering your taxes by $20, then after 40 years your expected value would be 100 * 1.06^40 which leaves you at $1028.57. However, now you have to pay taxes of 20%, which nets you $822.86.
DreamsServedSoft@reddit
also max roth first
Cicero912@reddit
That is just not correct in the slightest.

To run carts down ramps ? Right ? To deliver at multiple 7 Elevens ? Right ? Well deserved
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Lol weather and work don't scare or bother me bro
InvstrJester@reddit
It ain’t about being scared. It’s about always doing the same thing for months and years. I’ve had concrete construction jobs and did towing. I don’t have anything to prove. I have a weight bench at home. Straight out of school a drop & hook job is the only one that called me besides Sigma. I don’t wanna do team jobs or be on call. I’m good doing drop & hook and I get a lot of overtime. I really care about getting my rest after all of that f ‘ing driving. I have a weight bench at home.

For every one of those strong 55-year-olds, there are 100 that are broken. You don't see them working there, and you can't ask for their story.
I got the same thing when I was in the Army. Sergeant Major says we should be able to keep up. If he can do it anyone can, type of thing. Then at lunch time you hear him talking bad about someone needing to see the doc for pushing too hard.
I worked at the Domino's distribution center for three years. It was harder than anything I ever did in the Army, and I literally almost died behind the wheel. They have an actual tombstone near the front door in memory of a team that actually did die on the road. Exhaustion from too many hours will do that.
Be safe, know your limits, take VERY good care of your body, and save your good money for future you (in that order). You won't work there forever, so plan for it.
Similar-Jeweler-8392@reddit
Is McLean a good company? How about in comparison to prime?
Mother-Combination54@reddit
I do LTL line haul and make close to that without destroying my body
EmergencyViolinist31@reddit
How much experience if you don't mind me asking
Shyjuan@reddit
you earn that shit with McLane, I heard the work is very difficult.
Kkalemauser@reddit
Bro! Nice Job.
Now that you got your money up, DON’T increase your lifestyle.
Stash it for that time you get injured, or the car motor blows up.
Dezzolve@reddit
I hate when people say this.
I think it’s important to reward yourself, within reason. You are allowed to enjoy the money you are working hard to make.
robs104@reddit
And I hate it when people advocate for lifestyle creep.
Reward yourself AFTER you have a fully funded emergency fund and have outstanding bills and debts paid off.
Dezzolve@reddit
“Did you hear about Johnny? He just got hit by a train the other day.”
“Well at least he worked 70hrs a week and paid off all his debts before enjoying any of the money he made!!”
You know you can do both right. You can save money, AND improve your lifestyle. Like I said do it within reason and budget. Definitely don’t go out and get a brand new car with double/triple the payment compared to what you already have. Obviously if your power is about to get cut off you should take care of that as well.
Do get that new video game you’ve wanted to try, eat at that fancy restaurant you pass by every day that everyone recommends, go on a short day/weekend trip to that place you’ve always wanted to go.
robs104@reddit
Yeah. Spend $50 for a meal and $70 for a game. That’s fine off of almost $4k of income. But for improving your lifestyle, that’s the danger. I don’t know if OP is living a comfortable lower middle class lifestyle already or is living in poverty. If they’re already living comfortably then lifestyle creep is a real danger. If they’re living in poverty then bringing themselves up a bit but doing it carefully is a good thing.
There’s a huge danger is the “you might get hit by a bus tomorrow! Enjoy it now!” Mentality. The odds are, you won’t get hit by a bus. The odds are you will live to a nice, ripe old age if you’re not a fool. If you live hard and fast then yeah, I guess blow it. If you look both ways before crossing the street and listen out for fucking trains then probably try to save some money.
LoopDoGG79@reddit
True, but we don't know OP's financial or life situation. Maybe he needs to save up
TactualTransAm@reddit
Our definition of within reason is different. I wouldn't consider it until I had something to fall back on, then you can start considering the fancy restaurant or something. But I grew up poor, and I mean dirt floor poor was literal for us, not just a saying. So I know what it's like to not have anything at all and the peace of mind of a cushion is worth a lot to me.
Snookfilet@reddit
Same. I went a summer without shoes as a kid. I keep safety net and don’t think I could bring myself to splurge much.
Cicero912@reddit
Only after everything else (retirement, emergency fund etc) is funded and debt is paid off
Dezzolve@reddit
Only for someone to get into a car accident at age 35 and never get to spend a dime of what they have worked for.
Young and healthy people die every single day.
Thats why I said within reason also, don’t go living paycheck to paycheck because you want the newest things.
Take yourself on a weekend vacation, upgrade the things you use every day, eat a nice dinner every so often. It doesn’t have to be HUGE expenses all the time, just whatever is within your means.
robexib@reddit
Naw, reasonably treat yourself. Don't go buying a McMansion and a shiny new sports car, but that massive steak at that fancy dining establishment? Go for it.
Unique-Ad-2544@reddit

PlymouthSea@reddit
In my area US Foods advertises 4/10s with overtime (SoCal).

It's mostly 4 days but as a new driver it could be 5 or even six. The guys with seniority are the ones that have the solid 3-4 routes.
This check stub is two weeks of 4 day routes

They waxing that ass you working more and for less than dudes at a warehouse for 47 hours a week. For the work you guys do you should be making a lot more. You can make this running LTL line haul and not touch a single piece of freight
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Idk man, I worked 8 days over two weeks. I'll take it
possibly_lost45@reddit
How many hours though?
Jackso08@reddit (OP)
Takes roughly 12-13 to finish a route. Could be more if you slack off
taco_2325@reddit
It depends on the accounts you have. I have a C store run that’s 18 hours gate to gate -350 miles and trailer cubed out every week on that one run. Then my other load is 13 hours just FD’s and WG’s and other load is 16 hours 500ish miles and we go cubed out 6 WM’s and a couple C stores and WG’s FD’s. This is running legal OFC. Also a trainer myself and although a lot of drivers think we have it made we actually don’t bc having a trainee more times than not slows us down since we have to take the time to teach the new boys and girls who get hired. The best part is, is when my partner and I pick up an extra grocery of food service load just us two we can literally blast though it working like animals lol
tonythebutcher13@reddit
Im guessing 112
tantric_tongue69@reddit
Yeah exactly, I worked at US foods. 14- 16 hour days of intense physical weight rk the whole time are standard. They also had the worst case equipment of any cel job I've done

where are all these golden goose LTL jobs Reddit always talks about?
possibly_lost45@reddit
FedEx, ups, r&l, Estes, aaa Cooper, southwestern, old dominion, xpl, Dayton freight, these are the big ones.
threeglude@reddit
Used to run a very successful online biz, even had a warehouse. Trust me, most of the LTL guys are touching freight. Had shit coming and going all time time via almost all the LTL carriers. Granted, most of it is pallet jack work tho..
possibly_lost45@reddit
Those are city guys not line haul. Linehaul goes terminal to terminal or a drop point halfway between 2 terminals
rigjiggles@reddit
Ltl linehaul generally touches freight every day. A lot of it has dockwork.
NegusTyGaming-YPSTFU@reddit

Sledge1989@reddit
Circle k. One year tractor trailer experience
mydearpizza@reddit
Thank you!
oasuke@reddit
Exactly. It's the lowest paying food service company. In my short time there, I saw two round of new hires all quit within the first week. Some of these drivers came from other food service companies, so it wasn't the physical aspect that made them leave.
oasuke@reddit
I didn't get paid anything close to this. I actually think I should make a thread showing my paystub so people realize just how wildly McLane pays based on location. If I was making that I would've never left, and I was there for 2 months.

Not to be a downer, but something is wrong with your taxes.
You shouldn’t be taking home 86% of your gross. Only the poorest people get the luxury of 86% take home.
Minnesota here and I’m currently being robbed blind where if I gross 6k every two weeks, only 65%-70% of that is hitting my bank, or $3,900-$4,200. This is without 401k deductions.
tlowe84@reddit
Bro Im being robbed blind too and Im in Minnesota also I looked at one of my older paystubs and I grossed a little over $3800 and I got taxed $1200
Naw_im_sayin@reddit

This is what it sounds like, when doves cry.
Mytra180@reddit

Damn son I make 2500 every two weeks after taxes and I’m in Texas at GSC. Similar to mclane. We have m-f schedule with weekends off. Some Guys choose longer/bigger routes and make upwards of 3400 3500 but I choose the smaller ones to get home early. Fairly easy work tbh. I know food service guys got it bad. Every time I see the inside of a sysco or ben e keith truck the shit it stacked to the top of the trailer and falling over lol. We got a mclane hub about an hour from me

Hahaha. Enjoy yourself. Should have been around during covid. These places were throwing 1k plus extra just to take the route (unlimited at my location per your hours) plus the route pay.
Drivers were making 10k a week. CONFIRMED!
SYGMA.

Maaaaan how many dependents do you have. $600 in taxes is epic for $4,500 gross. I get raked over the coals.

With ally deductions I got 60-65 percent of my gross. Are you even paying taxes?

I’ve been at Mclane 15 years. Make sure to stretch and keep care of your body!

I used to work in the McLane warehouse. I remember guys always wanted to become drivers. You guys are home nightly too, right?
Really can’t go wrong with the money and the benefits.
