NEVER amalgam. The most toxic thing you could put in your body. Please avoid like the plague.

Depends on the fillings - if large and deep, then amalagm can last better. If cosmetically important or small, white composite. Fillings crack over time - filling in before decay gets near nerve wise. If it gets that deep, you are potentially talking root canals and crowns.

If it's not visible, amalgam usually attaches better/lasts longer. If it's a visible place, you'd want composite.
I have a few bits of amalgam on my molars, and a composite replacement for a chunk of incisor, which was a git to make stay in place - needed it done five times...
