Upgrading cpu/mobo with DDR4 RAM in 2026

Hi experts,
I have an ancient i7-6700K on a Z170XP-SLI mobo and am noticing the CPU bottleneck in a number of games I play frequently, ranging from race/flight sim to competitive shooters and RTS games. I can't afford to upgrade the board/cpu and ram together to a DDR5 ecosystem, might as well replace the whole PC at that point given the cost of RAM (which I also clearly can't afford).
What DDR4-compatible options can give me that performance boost into 2026. I know I can get a 5600X and AM4 mobo easily in my country (NZ), would that net me a significant improvement over my current system? Or am I barking up a dead horse?

5600x is a significant jump.

You can get an LGA1700 board + i5-14400F. Huge performance upgrade but still uses DDR4.

B550 board + R5 5600 is your other option for $75-100 less. Similar gaming performance, lower all-core performance.

14400F is a 12600KF minus 200MHz so this review data is relevant.

I would upgrade that to either a Ryzen 5000-based system or an Intel 12/13/14th-gen, whatever the best CPU and motherboard deal you can find. Gaming performance would be best with a Ryzen X3D, but honestly even the Intel would run circles around your 6th gen platform.
