How to affordably ship a large parcel from UK?

I've been shopping on eBay and the seller didn't ship internationally so I arranged for the parcel to be handed to a friend who lives in the UK. Now I realised that the Royal Mail only ships small packets up to 2kg internationally. Anything bigger and heavier has to be sent by Parcelforce. I did some research and was thrown back by the shipping prices - £90 for the cheapest service for the parcel of its waight and size. To put things into perspective, the cost of shipping the same parcel the opposite way, from my country (Slovenia) to the UK is 30€. What are my options?

Whats the cheapest way to send an aluminium ladder in the UK. Approx. 3 to 4 metres long.
