Pilots whats the most medial tasks that you have to do that you wish could be automated or faster somehow?

I'm not a pilot myself (software engineer) however I have flying experience and have done my BAK exam and my dad is a career pilot. We were talking the other day and he mentioned how horrible it was reading NOTAMs especially for longer routes that pass over many different countries (he said he had to read like 40 pages of NOTAMs for a recent flight he did to Japan). Being a software engineer I immediately started thinking about how I could automate reading NOTAMs (already started playing with something) but I'm curious if anyone else has any massive "pain in the ass" moments when it comes to being a pilot that they wish could be faster or get automated somehow.

Id prefer not to discuss my medial efforts with you, sir.
Perhaps we can discuss lateral appendages instead

huh?

Medial- towards the midline of the body Menial- boring tasks
completelyFAB@reddit (OP)
I did not catch that haha. Thanks for pointing that out

You used the wrong word. You mean menial or tedious. Medial means of the mean or average, or occurring in the middle.

We're in it for the love of the game, baby. Every time I think of something I wish was automated, I hear someone on a newer plane describe how it is automated. I have a job and I'm paid to do it; no reason to help you work around me! yells at cloud

Honestly thats a valid point. The biggest plane I've ever flown is a C172 but theres a joy to the old manual feeling of it

Another one of these guys

Literally everything related to flying NAT/Oceanic tracks

We don’t have to plot anymore so that’s like 99% of the medial tasks right there.

I live in Australia lol

So NOTAMS are semi automated depending on the airlines flight plan generation system.
The system we use grades notams between Highly Relevant and Background info and applies filters to airfields.
Departure, Destination and alternate get all the NOTAMS. Everything in between is filtered down to usually just Highly Relevant (i.e Runway Closed. No ILS).
Means when I’m looking at en-route stuff that I’m only contemplating in an emergency I don’t need to wade through shit tons of temporary signage and stands being U/S. Is there a runway? Cool. 👌
completelyFAB@reddit (OP)
Thats cool. So the airlines just manually grade them?
Murpet@reddit
I believe it’s fairly autonomous with a little bit of overview. NOTAMS are coded to specify certain things such as Runway data, tempo restrictions, airfield services etc so fairly easy with a basic filter to remove a hefty chunk.
The airline can set parameters for what they regard Highly relevant, relevant etc.

It's a trap guys 😂

Filling out my logbook has to be up there 💀
Murpet@reddit
We have an app that just exports automatically from the airlines rostering system.. haven’t filled one in for about 8 years now!
completelyFAB@reddit (OP)
I've filled out like 1 logbook entry in my entire life and it was tedious haha

leave it alone
