Does anybody wish there would be a US western trend here in the UK?

I love the style, and would love to be able to wear cowboy boots and a hat as I walk the streets of Reading but let's face it, I'd get all sorts of stares. Those of you who do wear an out there style, where do you find the courage?

Wear the hat and the boots and feel amazing
Who gives a toss about what other people think?

UK could always move here:

Also there is C&W and line dancing subculture in the UK. One of my wife's friends is into it. They have meet-ups all over the UK a few times a month. There are quite a lot of them, enough to book the whole O2 for one of their meet-ups.

You reminded me there's a lad in our Asda who wears a cowboy hat at work. Talks with an American accent too. I think he's putting it on, but he's the nicest guy ever. Always seen him going out of his way to help customers.
icabod88@reddit
During the height of the festival season last year, about 88.6% of all the girls were wearing cowboy hats

Howdy partner. Ain’t nothing wrong with old timey Stetson, boots and leather chaps.
Hope you have rooting tooting hoedown in Reading.

If you live near Glasgow the Grand Ole Opry does all this stuff several nights a week.
Eggtastico@reddit
just go for the lumberjack look & sport a beard instead of a hat.
No_Worth_2271@reddit (OP)
i don't think a 23yo woman with a beard would look awfully great 🤣

There's an old bloke who lives in the council houses in my village - I see him most days waiting for a bus into town wearing cowboy boots, fringed shirt, bolo tie and a massive hat. He certainly stands out in rural Lincolnshire.
EUskeptik@reddit
Goths seem to manage it. Ask one.

I used to get a lot of comments about being goth, and it taking some bravery. if you put big enough spikes on in the right places, or carry a stick of any kind.. people will respect you, even if they disapprove of the style. Do it once, even in a place away from your hometown, and see if you get any attention you dont like. If you do, then try again with a bigger stick. Ive rocked the druid look, chef clothes on my way from work, jesters outfits. I dont care if people take the mickey, its a chance to learn some smart comebacks imo
This_Suit8791@reddit
No I don’t
BugBottleBlue@reddit
There's no point to the hat it's there to protect you from blaring sun. You could get away with a pearl snap shirt, decent jeans and belt, and some boots without a heel. Said as a Texan (grew up working on a ranch) in the UK
Too-Much-Plastic@reddit
Yeah, American workwear is probably the way to go with this. Old-school jeans, decent logger or rancher boots or something with a square toe if he wants to call back to cowboy boots and a blanket lined jacket would be UK appropriate and look perfectly normal.
sossighead@reddit
I actually quite like the look but as you rightly say it’s a practical look for working outdoors in the dry, hot, southern areas of the USA. Not if you’re an IT worker in Berkshire.
No point in LARPING.
MarzipanElephant@reddit
Funnily enough a western-style clothes shop has just opened up near me, so maybe it's more of a thing than you think. (Or possibly it'll turn out to be less of a thing than the shop people think. Time will tell!)
No_Worth_2271@reddit (OP)
yes there's one near me, 'wild wild western wear', very expensive of course but some super cool stuff in there.
sossighead@reddit
“Aye that’s Tex, he likes American things.”
Alan Partridge if you aren’t aware.
Sustainable_Twat@reddit
Sounds like a good idea till you’re having to carry around bin bags for the Horse.
datguysadz@reddit
Absolutely not.
scenecunt@reddit
This happened a couple of summers ago in Brighton. Felt like everybody was dressed like a cowboy for a bit and listening to bands like cmat and shannon and the clams.
Ok-Constant-2683@reddit
No, but it is always hilarious when you see someone wearing that shit
BroodLord1962@reddit
Not for me, no
FelicityFemboy@reddit
Just wear em, what's the worst that will happen
Chelz91@reddit
I mean in my bit of the UK there are people dressed like cowboys on the regular as well as being “line dancing” happening in some larger pubs with function rooms… I really liked Beyoncé’s mirror cowboy hat so I made and wore one of my own for a while… if you wanna do something just do it
GenericBrowse@reddit
Steps kind of started something with their songs Bootscootin baby, and we had cotton eye Joe. Line dancing seemed to take off in the late 90s.
Dress how you want, there is always a hardcore fanbase for country and western music, you could go to a gig or weekend (my grandparents were big country fans and used to go to country weekends at Pontins) event if you want to 'fit in'
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Theres a bar round here that does a monthly country night and they encourage people to dress like that
Nikotelec@reddit
What do you mean, no western trend?
Every time I go into town on a Friday night I see a load of women in pink cowboy hats. They don't appear to be at all self conscious, why should you?
No_Worth_2271@reddit (OP)
haha oh yes! hen do-esque cowboys. i mean day to day but yeah perhaps i just need to do it!
Kapika96@reddit
How do you think trends start? Somebody does it, others think it's interesting and starting doing it too. Needs somebody to be first though, so why not you?
Not something I'd be interested in though.
HalfAgony-HalfHope@reddit
No. The boots are fine but bopping round in a Stetson and fringed shirt would be bloody weird.
Suspicious_tuna@reddit
The horse might be a step too far
WoodyManic@reddit
Just do it anyway. Why the fuck not?
Fizl99@reddit
Just do it an own it! It doesnt matter if they stare, maybe they are envious of the hat
nonoanddefinitelyno@reddit
A confident adult doesn't give a fuck what other people think.
Go for it.
