I'm going through some insomnia this week, waking up multiple times a night.
anyone else have this issue?
I'm 45m combat vet. usually I have trouble sleeping, but waking up in the middle of the night isn't how it affects me, so this is a bit new. and to wake up multiple times? crazy.
but i am awake, so i figure I'd see what y'all were up to if it happens to any more of us here.
I hope not, and you're all sleeping well.
Short-Nail-3781@reddit
46f here and I wake up 3-4x a night because I guess my bladder is now the size of a pea š
pedestal_of_infamy@reddit
This was my first perimenopause symptom. Taking magnesium glycinate an hour before bed, bone broth 30 minutes before bed and getting my acid reflux under control have helped. I still get a monthly/every other month cycle where I am wide awake at 2:30 am, but at least it's not every night.
vyyne@reddit
We're approaching the full moon, so the night is brighter and that generally doesnt help.
SaltBag666@reddit
Iām awake. 3:30 am. Itās been happening a lot lately and I know itās because Iām not working out. I also have seasonal allergies so working out sucks right now.Ā And PerimenopauseĀ
touslesmatins@reddit
If it makes you feel better, I'm having bad sleep because I'm working out too much ā¹ļø
ragingchump@reddit
Right here with you on all counts

Same, but I never worked out.Ā

I started reading Russian literature at 4 in the morning on kindle. Guaranteed to get you back to sleep
Professional-Loss743@reddit
This is life. Two days in a row of 6+ hours of sleep is rare
bonefish@reddit
I still wake up around 3am some nights, but I found taking 3 grams of glycine right before bed helps me stay asleep most nights.

It's strange that you ask this right now because normally my dark and even violent dreams don't really bother me at all. Three days ago, I had one that was different and very unsettling. I've been on and off waking up with the sweats multiple times a night since. Today I haven't slept in over 22 hours. It's weird because usually cannabis helps with the insomnia and rigs me of the worst part of dreams. Something about this week was just hitting different.
shanty2021@reddit (OP)
i have found that for me, cannabis has a point where it lost its effectiveness for making me sleepy. same with its use for my anxiety. i have been off it for two months, and only in the last week or so have i been having insomnia. in fact, in the first two weeks off cannabis, i slept better than i was. ymmv. maybe a t break might be helpful.
sejenx@reddit
My anxiety is a little high right now and I am stuck in that awful cycle of im awake because I over caffeinate, because I am tired the next day and need to stay alert, but it keeps me up at night. It's totally dumb.
chunkalunkk@reddit
Get an non-flavored creatine powder, add it to a non-caffiene fluid and drink it after 12:30p. Your brain uses most of it all morning, after lunch all the blood goes to your stomach, thus the energy supply for ATP gets low. Adding that creatine saturation back into your blood keeps everything happy. Beware, some people process it quickly, so it may make you use the restroom more until your body gets used to it.
dontletyourcrownslip@reddit
Same. But I do decaf and it still does it to me. You're spot on, it's totally dumb. š
Rubik842@reddit
No caffeine or sweetened drinks and sweet snacks after lunch. Try it, it worked for me anyway. It's tough because you're craving it to keep your brain going, but ir helps with better quality sleep.
sejenx@reddit
And with anxiety! Lol.
coopnjaxdad@reddit
Selank helped me with my anxiety.Ā

Go get a sleep study done at the VA. You might have sleep apnea.
shanty2021@reddit (OP)
i do have sleep apnea, and i have and use a cpap. but i also have another sleep study coming up, bc theoretically, the cpap should be taking care of these wakeups.
good call.
EmmalouEsq@reddit
I've suffered from insomnia since early adulthood. I guess bipolar disorder can do that.
Anyway, Ambien can be a game changer if your insomnia is chronic.
RJRoyalRules@reddit
I had this problem a few years ago and it took me a while to figure out it was because my bedroom was getting too warm at night. I started turning the fan on before bed and that took care of it.
Not saying thatās the exact case for you, but sometimes thereās an external factor disturbing your sleep that you might have to investigate.
shanty2021@reddit (OP)
no, that's fair. i do have a ceiling fan that i have on at night, and just added a standing floor fan. when it was cold out, i used to have a heater that i would program to come on early in the morning to warm the place up so i could wake up comfortably. temperature is real important to my ability to sleep.
Same_Bug5069@reddit
I did. Waking up all night, staring at the ceiling, brain running laps. Then I started going to support groups. Cancer groups, trauma groups, whatever they had. Cry on somebodyās shoulder, finally feel something, sleep like a baby. Then I met a guy named Tyler and things got a little out of hand. Makes insomnia seem pretty manageable in hindsight.

Has Helena Bonham Carter made an appearance yet?
MaverickGalaxyJam@reddit
Ever since basic, Iāve never slept the same. That was 30 years ago. I used to be the heaviest sleeper ever. Now I wake straight up at the smallest unexpected sounds and thoughts.
JackBlackBowserSlaps@reddit
Yep, for years now. If waking up during the night (vs problems falling asleep) continues to be an issue, ask your doc about trazodone. I take 1-2 50mg pills before bed. Works pretty well.
PatchworkGirl82@reddit
I don't normally, but I have the last couple of weeks. I think it's mostly stress related, but even edibles can't keep me down for very long.
Hypnot0ad@reddit
I just started taking Magnesium Glycinate and itās helping me fall asleep and stay asleep. Make sure itās gylcinate, the magnesium citrate will just make you poop.
Accomplished-Run221@reddit
While living in a crumbling democracy overrun with fascists, if you arenāt having sleeping problems - youāre probably on the wrong side of history.

For women of this age, it's perimenopause.
SickOfNormal@reddit
I did, but....
Now, I put on 2 dudes from youtube - One is called Sleepy Scientist and the other is Historian Sleepy.
I will listen for like 20 minutes.... and awake 3-4 hours later and go pee and drink some water. Pop on a different one theirs... and 20-30 minutes later, I'm out again
They do this trick of repeating the facts over and over again with a calming british monotone. And it's not like I'm not interested in the topics, I am! That's the crazy thing. About to put it on right now.
BetterThanAFoon@reddit
I do something similar. I don't listen to those channels as they are AI generated. I try and look for actual creator generated content and shoot for those long videos in particular.
Purple-Protagonist@reddit
If you have an interest in gaming, stuff like Sniper Elite, Hitman etc. Sleepyslorgs is great for knocking you out.
As is anything with Jonathan Ferguson, the keeper of firearms and artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, which houses a collection of thousands of iconic weapons from throughout history.
Don't get me wrong, he does fascinating presentations, but if I'm not wide awake there's something in his cadence and timbre that puts me out.
SickOfNormal@reddit
I used to watch Forgotten Weapons with Ian McCollum .... 2 or 3 of his 10 minute videos used to put me to sleep. I learned a whole shitload about guns... and i only on BB / Pellet guns for fun. Not a big enthusiast, but found how the guns were made was fascinating.
Purple-Protagonist@reddit
Not bad...
If you really want a knock out, Lee & Grant which was a History Channel special, narrated by Jonathan Frakes was my go to back when I had a cable DVR.
ConfidenceFragrant80@reddit
Yes but for me it's menopause. Not sure what your gender is. I've found magnesium supplements very helpful for both my husband and myself
BrandyBunch805@reddit
Itās 3:45 am and I am responding to this, so, yes, yes I do.
Sorry you are in the same boat.
Skulls_of_Ink@reddit
42 now, been pulling all-nighters every night since I was 5. Tried meds, cycling my sleep. 4 hours of sleep every morning/afternoon for almost 40 years now. Wife understands, but drives her nuts.
The sound I hate most in the world is suddenly hearing birds chirping out of nowhere, and then looking at the CCTV and seeing the sun coming up.
Feel like I am the only one awake in the world at night, lowest point of stress in the "day" for me.
Mudlark2017@reddit
Yeah, I started getting really bad insomnia at the end of 2024 and wouldn't say I have fully recovered. It's not uncommon for me to wake up multiple times but it's nothing compared to not sleeping a wink for multiple days. I've had depression, anxiety, panic attacks, IBS but that level of insomnia is easily the worst ailment of the lot.
roonilwonwonweasly@reddit
Yup. Been doing it for years now and the extra stress lately isn't helping. Mix that with vivid weird sometimes very dark dreams and now makeup doesn't cover my dark circles.
Naps and David Attenborough help but lately not that much.
tdktn0@reddit
I used to, turns out even just one drink would mess my sleep up. After cutting alcohol completely its rare I have a rough nite.
Original_Mix9255@reddit
Combat vet, and still on active duty after 24 years. So I hear you.
If I donāt PT to the point of breaking a sweat or being out of breath, caffeinate too late, or have too much on my mind because of work or family stress, I wonāt sleep well. I wake up a lot too.
Some of that waking up is because I have to pee and some of it is part of the natural sleep cycle where the body produces cortisol to wake you up to ensure your surroundings are still safe - probably a survival instinct.
Taking ashwaganda before bed, as well as 200 mg of magnesium glycinate, as well as being physically tired, not in pain,- and having a temperature appropriate room and blanket helps.
Iāve done the sleep studies. And have all the data.
Likely due to PTSD from combat and a rough childhood, Iām a light sleeper. Constantly vigilant. So I really have to take care of all the variables to ensure solid sleep. Good sleep hygiene as well call it now in the DoW.
crazycatlady331@reddit
I haven't slept through the night since Covid lockdowns started.
Notchersfireroad@reddit
I get it a few times a year. My natural sleep schedule would be 2, 3 or 4 hour sleeps everyday if I could pull it off. There aren't many things more frustrating than not being able to fall asleep.
rideofthebasilisks@reddit
Sometimes I'll wake up in the middle of the night and it'll be clear that my body is just done with sleeping for a bit.
It used to stress me out, but the stress would make things worse.
I find just rolling with it whenever it happens it's my best strategy. I'll get up, I don't turn any lights on. I'll make some toast or something, and I'll sit with my phone screen at 0% brightness/night mode and I'll read some bullshit for half an hour or so.
Usually it's enough of a reset that when I go to lay back down I fall asleep no problem.
Your mileage may vary
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I fall asleep early but when life has bullshit or a part of my body decides to lock up, I wake up early. I get some exercise, get some peace and quiet, catch up on the ballgame without commercials. Make the best of it and ready for the kids and work.
-Odi-Et-Amo-@reddit
I havenāt slept throughout the night in probably. 10 years. I wake up around 2-3am. Sometimes I fall back asleep, other times Iām up for the day. Iāve become used to functioning on little sleep, however I donāt do it very well.
RoyalPuzzleheaded259@reddit
Insisted years ago. I would get maybe 3 hours of sleep a night. Wake up at 1-2 am and just couldnāt get back to sleep. This went on for months. It was being caused by me undiagnosed depression. Once I got that under control I started sleeping a lot better.
Gloomy-Moose-4367@reddit
5 hours sleep if I am lucky, no drugs or drinking in my system.
DirtyBirdDawg@reddit
Thanks to recent work stress, my anxiety has me basically sleepless right now. I usually take supplements to help me sleep but they didn't work tonight.
My body is exhausted and my brain is too. But my body being tired doesn't work if my mind is racing a thousand miles an hour.
StevieNickedMyself@reddit
Bouts? I haven't been able tp sleep properly in over a decade.

I am awake at 4:18. I have a prescription for sleep but I don't wanna take it
Pmorwin@reddit
I've battled insomnia for years. Some.night barely getting a couple of hours. I've tried seemingly everything. Did a sleep study but was only prescribed phamacuticals (do not recommend. Melatonin, over the counter sleep aids, acupuncture, acupressure, holistic medicine, exercise, watch diet and drink consumption but no avail. I finally embraced it as a superpower. Now I work a job that starts at 2am. Seems to work for me. Good luck my friend
NeverEndingCoralMaze@reddit
I havenāt slept since 2004. Your age. Go to the doc. I was just diagnosed with narcolepsy type 2. Repeated awakenings at night and extremely tired during the day. ADHD meds masked it for years. You could also have apnea. I hope you get some rest.
VectorJones@reddit
For about 20 years. Can't remember the last good night sleep I've had.

Poopy-Drew@reddit
Iāve (43M) been trying out the 2 sleeps the all humans did until about 1000yrs ago and I dono how to describe it other than it totally makes more since to my body than it does to my brain and it unlocks a magical 2hr window where Iām awake and lucid but calm and creative. Itās been my epiphany zone and I can actually work stuff out in my head really well. But it does require an earlier bedtime usually shortly after dark Iāll either watch tv in bed or let myself doze off on the couch And if you have ever let yourself fall asleep early I have always woke up at 1 and couldnāt go back to sleep, so I get all pissed off tring to make myself go back to sleep and Iāll either finally fall asleep 45min before I need to wake up. Or Iāll just say fuck it and get up then. This version emphasizes and leans in on whatever the hell makes that bullshit happen. Thatās what I mean by it makes sense to my body but not my mind.
-threefeetoffun@reddit
I have non-24 sleep disorder. I am up almost all night and worse each night.
I remember telling my keyboarding teacher I couldn't sleep at night. And this was before the internet.
shanty2021@reddit (OP)
I'm sorry. that sucks. nothing helps?
-threefeetoffun@reddit
No. I tried to kill myself with ambien in 2023 so I cant have sleep meds anymore. Pot you get used to. Luckily I have a job that grants me flexibility with it.
ConfidenceFragrant80@reddit
Jesus. Sorry. Hope you are better now, random Internet stranger
mizushimo@reddit
I haven't had insomnia since I developed mild sleep apnea, I'm out like a light and then wake up even more tired in the morning. x.x
Seriously though, when things were a little more normal for me, weed pretty much cured my insomnia, I would take half a gummy an hour before bed and be out like a light. This also cured my massive travel insomnia that I used to have the first night in a hotel.
Illustrious-Good5086@reddit
Lifelong. I was on Ambien for like 20 years then my doc read a study that said it may contribute to early onset dementia. I straight up said 'That's fine' but its her license so now I smoke a joint and take 2 melatonin gummies before bed. If I'm actually tired that will get me 4 to 5 hours. Sometimes when I wake up I'll joint and gummy again and get another 2 to 3 hours. Why am I typing this like it's advice? I'm fucking terrible at sleep!
DustedGorilla82@reddit
Up right now! Have a killer headache from a sinus infection. Canāt tell you the last time I had 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep
Wolfpack87@reddit
All, the time. Struggled with sleep my whole life, but couple times a year, I just dont sleep for a week.
Have tried everything. Nothing works. Eventually I start going insane, and then sack our from exhaustion - Course now that I have kids, I can't sack out for days like I use to. So I just end up with permanent sleep exhaustion lol.
CornishShaman@reddit
Sleep whats that! 𤣠46 and i very rarely have a good nightās sleep partly because of my mental health condition and partly because of pain (old injuries from the 90s) Iāve given up caffeine and that helps a tiny bit.
Nowadays i get more concerned when i have a good night and i think wtf is wrong with me!

I know a thing that wakes me up all the time after being in the military is my legs go numb if I don't have a soft enough bed. Just my two cents
cdgman@reddit
Say what? Not a soft enough bed? Brother dont know which branch you were in.

I read physical books with a dim yellowish light during my "watch".
I'm still resting during this time so I don't stress about hours of sleep.
The hardest part is getting to bed early and getting to sleep the first time.
I also only eat two larger meals a day, so I usually haven't eaten for quite a few hours before going to bed.
