What’s your favourite genre of UK subreddit post?
Posted by HotelPuzzleheaded654@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 116 comments
I like the ones on Driving UK where the OP will post a video of dashcam footage looking to be vindicated and the comments tell them that they’re in fact the bad driver.
docju@reddit
Anything on r/askuk where OP says something is weird only to be told repeatedly is not. An example here.
neilm1000@reddit
I loved that thread, especially where the Americans turn up claiming that OP is racist.
WinkyNurdo@reddit
My favourite was the gf turning up in the comments, and saying yes, OP is this much of a cock in real life.
docju@reddit
This is genuinely where I learned that word has racial connotations in the US!
neilm1000@reddit
Even more amusing they actually have things like graham crackers (pronounced gram, obviously) and goldfish crackers. And apparently that's not racist.
docju@reddit
There is a particular regular poster in r/UK_food whose diet is… questionable. When I see a photo of a Chinese meal I know the comments will be decent.
Etheria_system@reddit
Oh monk. I worry about him
docju@reddit
I cling to the hope that a lot of those are reposts or old photos and he is just messing with us.
auntie_climax@reddit
A Monday treat?
docju@reddit
Washed down with an ice cold Coke.

Sir-Craven@reddit
Seems like this is a good enough thread.. what's the take on the scenario below?
2 lanes on approach.. cars are backed up all in the left lane.. right lane is totally empty.. in order to skip the traffic built up on the approach, green car does the following.. discuss.
blooberdoob25@reddit
Whenever people talk about this, someone will always post some rules about “misusing lanes” to say it isn’t allowed. But I don’t see how it’s misusing lanes personally, you’re correctly using the right lane to go around a roundabout, which is perfectly fine…
peppermint_aero@reddit
A close cousin of "someone keeps parking outside my house all day, I'm definitely not overthinking it but here's a quick diagram I drew to ask strangers on the internet"
SYSTEM-J@reddit
It's called slingshotting. A close, but less safe, relative is driving up the empty "turn right" lane at a set of traffic lights when the "straight ahead" lane has a queue and then gunning off straight ahead as soon as the light goes green.
Jasboh@reddit
Someone did this Infront of me the other day, I just pissed myself, if everyone did it it would be chaos. So probably not good
Sir-Craven@reddit
Pretty sure I waved and said thanks
HoraceorDoris@reddit
It’s not illegal, it’s just not British to jump the queue!
tiorzol@reddit
Ahh. Frowned upon but not illegal right.
lime-enthusiast@reddit
The tourists who make posts saying "I'm staying in London but I want to visit Edinburgh, Wales and the lake district in three days"
soverytiiiired@reddit
People really seem to enjoy spending their holiday on a motorway for some reason
PudWud-92_@reddit
Clearly it’s the ones that are similar to:
“I earn £250k per year and have £100k in savings. Can I afford to live on my own?”
Or
“I can’t understand how anyone could possibly live on less than £80k per year, it’s just an impossible life of poverty otherwise”
DisastrousRecord1802@reddit
I agree with you. More recent favourite was the guy posting his wives driving, for her to be pointed out as the issue. I feel the guy knew she was, and just needed some vindication lol
MadamMah@reddit
Is this the one where his wife drove straight behind a car to get into the space said car was reversing into? I thoroughly enjoyed that one!
DisastrousRecord1802@reddit
Thats the one lol
DebaucheV5@reddit
I like the posts where someone's asking "does anybody else..." except OP is certifiably insane. Like "does anybody else eat their lunch in the changing room at the gym? It's convenient, it gives me an excuse to spend more time in the changing room, and the crumbs falling onto my chest soak up some of the excess sweat. My wife says it's weird, but I've always done it this way and I don't understand what the problem is. Surely I can't be the only one?"
And then the comment section is full of people losing their minds
SoggyWotsits@reddit
I love the gardening subs, but dare to want a nice lawn and you’re all but branded a wildlife murdering criminal. Post a picture of an overgrown patch of grass, with a rusty swing and faded plastic slide? It’s a beautiful haven for nature!
Spike_Milligoon@reddit
lol - someone posted about improving the view in their sons room which basically looked out on a shed 4ft away. I suggested a cheap trellis with some fake flowers on and someone got arsey with me.
hhfugrr3@reddit
I went to a gardening sub to ask about getting rid of some little trees that were spreading across my lawn. I got so much hate for a) having grass in my garden; and b) asking if I should use weed killer. In the end, I had to mute the whole sub to stop the angry messages.
No_Doughnut3257@reddit
I like the ones on r/fryup where everyone praises a sausage breakwater for no reason
ManInTheDarkSuit@reddit
Those posts are odd. Who cares if bean sauce mixes with stuff? It's yummy!
jurwell@reddit
It’s people who’ve read an Alan Partridge quote/reference without realising, and it’s become a serious thing that people sincerely believe. It’s now impossible to tell if someone’s joking or being sincere
I agree it’s nonsense.
TeHNeutral@reddit
Sort of like a savoury 99
th3thund3r@reddit
I've been like this for as long as I can remember. My gran told me my mum was the same. Bean sauce and egg yolk are separate liquids and should remain so. When they mix I get the roaring boak. Besides, different breakfast items get dipped in each. You can't just go mixing them and miss out on a substantial portion of your dipping options.
neilm1000@reddit
Bleurgh. Beany egg yolk sounds horrible.
lost_send_berries@reddit
Give it to him then, he doesn't mind
auntie_climax@reddit
To you. We're all different
ManInTheDarkSuit@reddit
Aaah. I really ought to rewatch it. I haven't seen some of that stuff since it first aired.
TheGreatBatsby@reddit
Wh-who, who, who do you think you are?
Ricky_Martins_Vagina@reddit
I stack the individual beans into a brickwork type arrangement to form a breakwater between the remaining bean juice and the sausages
auntie_climax@reddit
And lose their shit over anything green on the plate 🙄
Etheria_system@reddit
God forbid a vegetarian posts, they all start foaming at the mouth.
FiveYardFaded@reddit
Correctly prepared beans require no breakwater.
MaxMouseOCX@reddit
I remove the beans with whatever the big serving spoon with drainage holes is called.
The sauce is supposed to be on the beans, not form an amorphous sea with bacon and sausage archipelago.
imperfect_and_tense@reddit
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slotted_spoon
FiveYardFaded@reddit
You wouldn’t need to with properly prepared beans.
mosleyowl@reddit
Overall, 7 on 10!
TheGreatBatsby@reddit
Let's make love!
neilm1000@reddit
Back of the net!
chemo92@reddit
It's a partridge reference isn't it?
tannercolin@reddit
Yes, and its the easiest comment to make in that sub. Just like in every post on /r/inbetweeners you'll have the exact same set of comments upvoted
neilm1000@reddit
Coq au vin.
docju@reddit
I enjoy the ways people suggests the meat is undercooked. “Was this cooked with warm regards?”
BuzzAllWin@reddit
Its a oft overlooked fundamental… if you haven’t got a break water i. Place then how can we possibly trust your egg cooking abilities
neilm1000@reddit
A sausage breakwater is an excellent thing.
justanothergin@reddit
It's quite entertaining watching the right wing circle jerks on r/AskBrits and how they gang up on anyone that has a progressive or left leaning perspective.
But as someone else said r/GoodNewsUK is probably my favourite. There's so much doom and gloom in the UK and it's refreshing seeing what's going well here, things that the billionaire controlled mainstream media wouldn't dare reporting on!
Ok_Economist7901@reddit
Agreed, Good news Uk is excellent. I just wish more folk would read it. Not sure they’d change their opinion though, too brainwashed.
Realistic-Muffin-165@reddit
It's generally ok but not always well researched. There was a green energy one recently which was only good news if you didn't live in the vicinity of the infrastructure needed for it.
r_keel_esq@reddit
Mods there are cunts - banned me for no reason and so every month I message pointing out that they're very rude for continuing to ignore my request for clarification and that their bad manners reflect poorly on us as a nation
Enough-Ad3818@reddit
Let it go dude.
It's really not important, and if you're doing this every month then it's eating away at you far more than it is them.
Fantastic-Pear6241@reddit
At some point this becomes unhealthy
justanothergin@reddit
Same, I got banned from AskBrits too because I said I would be voting SNP. Looked into it and apparently they've banned people in the past for being "lefties" or "nationalists". So I reported them to Reddit admin for abuse of mod privileges. My main even got banned for 7 days because I called them out for it on my alt 🤦.
Realistic-Muffin-165@reddit
Bonus points for the dashcam footage being 2 minutes of tedious motorway driving and a one second incident at the end.
antiglow@reddit
I like r/casualuk always some dry British humour going on in there
auntie_climax@reddit
Every time I post on there I get downvoted to fuck lol Someone said it was because I "need an old man to take my bin out" after saying my neighbour had done it for years until he got too old (he liked doing it, I didn't "need" him to) it's a mental sub
antiglow@reddit
Someone just downvoted me in here for suggesting it 🤣🤣
I think most British sums are like that tbh. Lots of dry humour but also lots of miserable complainy British people. I wouldn’t take it personally !
GeggingIn@reddit
Just post “Mash Potato”. They will of course say Bodger and Badger and all will be well.
neilm1000@reddit
My current favourite is the Reddit moralising that paying cash means you're a tax dodger.
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
Businesses that insist on or encourage you to pay cash have either poor commercial sense or are indeed dodging tax.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
More of the former, but it isn't the work of some sinister conspiracy either way. If they get paid in cash they can take that straight down the cash and carry, get work done, do their own shopping - totally free of any technicalities or hurdles. It not going through the books is just another positive. The sad thing is people seem more concerned about their local chippy (which may be barely hanging on) possibly dodging tax than multinational businesses legally fiddling it to skip millions and pocketing the profits.
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
I don't really understand what this is supposed to mean. One of the ways they are tax dodging; it's a simple as that. Saying it's not a 'sinister conspiracy' doesn't somehow diminish that.
...yes. So they're tax dodgers.
I don't think this is remotely true. I think most people hate both.
RecentTwo544@reddit
I think in most cases it's sheer bloody-mindedness.
It's just as easy, if not easier, to dodge tax using card payments these days as it is having shit loads of cash laying about.
Sorbicol@reddit
I think some of it is small business owners not really understanding how electronic payment systems work and signing up to bad deals were the % of the payment the payment operator takes is a lot more than they were expecting / budgeted for.
They prefer cash because then they don’t have to pay that %. It’s a lot more complex than ‘I’m tax dodging’.
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
Yes, they have poor commercial sense. People will tie themselves into knots to justify not paying that small percentage (granted some rates are poor), but the cost is much cheaper than the cost of handling cash.
Ecstatic_Food1982@reddit
There are no other explanations.
You don't run, and have never run, a very small business or been self employed in a manual job, have you?
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
I've been a director for three small businesses, and I currently manage 20 self employed labourers.
Businesses that insist on or encourage you to pay cash have either poor commercial sense or are indeed dodging tax. There are no other explanations.
neilm1000@reddit
The other side to that is that people are using cash more as a way of managing spending.
Empress_LC@reddit
I do that. It's working out better for me
GoHomeCryWantToDie@reddit
Or any kind of shop that you don't personally use is a front for money laundering.
EndPsychological2541@reddit
Operation machinize.. Is apparently just a bunch of pissed off redditors?
link
GoHomeCryWantToDie@reddit
I'm sure they may discover some wrongdoing but real money laundering takes places through dodgy solicitors and accountants, not a vape shop. We've just arrested Steven Lyons who is a major figure in my town's underworld. Daniel Kinahan has also been arrested in Dubai. They're the ones doing the real laundering.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
People who are anxious and want a step by step breakdown of how to do something like post a letter or catch a bus.
People whining about some Americanism, then using one in their own replies or finding it was an originally British term.
Hedgehogosaur@reddit
I do like a good compoface but only when it's something really petty and a pointing finger.
SpudFire@reddit
What about holding up a piece of paper? My all-time favourite compoface was Ron who racked up a big PPV porn bill but shamelessly blamed Virgin Media for a billing error
docju@reddit
Crouching beside a pothole pointing into it? Perfection.
sparkysmonkey@reddit
r/motorcyclegear for the one piece leather thirst traps and also to see the king turn up and comment
Harrry-Otter@reddit
Somebody asks a completely normal question about if Crete is a nice holiday destination.
By the end of the comment chain, we’ve found somebody who last had a holiday in 1983 and is paid in pistachio shells and beatings.
ForwardImagination71@reddit
R/landlorduk where what the landlord is suggesting is so egregious that even the other landlords are disgusted 🙈
Element77@reddit
r/spottedonrightmove fascinating seeing some of the houses go up for sale in this country
Laxly@reddit
Honestly, I like r/goodnewsuk target than the doom and gloom, shows which things are actually going well
SpudFire@reddit
Unfortunately every post has some "yeah but what about" bellend in the comments. It's like the government aren't allowed to invest in anything until all the roads are like Silverstone and NHS waiting lists don't exist
Element77@reddit
The anti-r/unitedkingdom
El_John_Nada@reddit
I joined it but it seems that its good news never make it to my feed. It's a shame: there are some interesting stuff in there.
Historical_Project86@reddit
I am both repulsed and fascinated by the posts which first ask you to accept a "fact" which is at best unprovable, and at worst a downright lie. e.g. "with all the muslim r*pe gangs running rampant, do you think that......blah blah bleh bleurgh". Which is something that you and I know they heard down 'Spoons.
EUskeptik@reddit
That’s the sub where people complaining about motorway lane hogging are tailgaters and people complaining about tailgating are lane hoggers.
-oo-
Empress_LC@reddit
r/ukweddings is my fave. Some of the women there are delusional and just damn ridiculous.
neilm1000@reddit
I can't look, I'd get sucked into a cycle of cackling.
Empress_LC@reddit
😂😂😂
ForwardImagination71@reddit
r/DIYuk where people who hired dodgy trades post pictures of the offending work and ask if it looks ok.
Or they come in before hiring the dodgy trades with a description of the work and ask Redditors how much it will cost to pay someone else to do it.
GeggingIn@reddit
It is a good sub, but they are brutal when it comes to ripping people’s interior design apart.
ForwardImagination71@reddit
Yeah - "it looked better before" or it simply not being clear which was the before pic and which was the after pic 🙈
GeggingIn@reddit
“I’ve worked every waking hour for five weeks, learnt plumbing from scratch and have finally finished my bathroom.
Would love your feedback? 😊”
“Those tiles look cheap. I hate it.”
MinimumSilver5814@reddit
Misanthrophic shut-ins complaining every time the sun comes out and the temperature gets above 18c. "I'm only comfortable when it's grey and pissing it down, and I want everyone else to be miserable too".
Bonus points for Uniqlo being the only clothing brand people around here will recommend, like it's some UK reddit cult.
Shmiggles@reddit
I like the ‘what brands do posh people buy’ threads because you get some interesting product recommendations, cliched discussions about the class system, interesting examples of signalling, counter-signalling and counter-counter-signalling, and some marketing twat dropping the obligatory ‘Loro Piana and Bruno Cuccinelli’.
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
Housinguk is kinda fun sometimes. You either get the most gorgeous looking homes but they’re either extremely expensive or in the middle of nowhere. And then you get houses that haven’t been decorated for 50 years (in the ugly way not the oh lovely old, the 90% of people would have to rip out things) and the owner is convinced is ‘stunning’ ‘gorgeous’ and worth 200k more than nicer homes on the same street
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
Also the ones where someone is earning above minimum wage and people treat them like millionaires. ‘What I would do for £30k’ like be for real we should all be aspiring higher
Successful_Buy3825@reddit
Any thread of men asking what to wear inevitably ends up with Zara, M&S and Uniqlo, regardless of the criteria OP sets out. Any suggestion of slightly nicer brands results in being shouted down as a member of the global elite.
deathmetalbestmetal@reddit
M&S engages in paid astroturfing in the UK subs and I cannot be convinced otherwise.
And_Justice@reddit
Complaints about exhausts or music being played out loud. People really hate you trying to get them to introspect because they feel so safe in the "everyone else thinks this" mentality that they've never actually thought at length about differing perspectives.
GeggingIn@reddit
Go on, let’s have one about class, so we can all fall out again
And_Justice@reddit
Not an answer but in response to your choice: I'm noticing recently on those threads the amount of people who can't parse the idea of partial responsibility. It's like something has to be blamed entirely on one party or the other... I weep at sharing the road with those people
SYSTEM-J@reddit
I like the ones where someone tries to make a serious post on a sub dedicated to any classic British comedy and just gets a solid wall of quotes and in-jokes in reply rather than any serious answers.
peppermint_aero@reddit
A really niche and odd favourite:
"Please debate why I, an individual In A Hurry, the only individual to ever be running late, should not simply be allowed to drive right across red lights or even junctions where kids are crossing. It feels unfair that other road users and laws exist."
The comments universally dunk on OP every time.
TobblyWobbly@reddit
I love r/Justfuckmyshitup. No matter how bad my hair is looking, I have a poke around on there and feel like I'm in a shampoo advert.
GeggingIn@reddit
Tea, queueing, biccies, or hollibobs.
