Built myself a rooftop tent for my roofless car.

That’s awesome sauce! Quirky in all the best ways 😎

Or, stay with me here.... fun?
kdawg_htown@reddit
Fun to me is being practical which leads to being comfortable. This setup misses the mark on both. OP has a land cruiser but chooses to use an MR2 for overlanding.... what is the reason for that other than the "cool" photo for attention?
nater255@reddit
See previous response.

I usually do just sleep on the ground.
But, 2 people's sleeping stuff plus climbing stuff doesn't fit in a car that technically only has 2 cubic feet of storage space. So, I figured if I built a tent and stored all the sleeping stuff folded up in the tent, that would save me some room in the car.
Plus, it's more fun to cuddle on a mattress under real sheets rather than in 2 separate sleeping bags and sleeping pads.

Holy shit, MR2 spotted! Whoo whoo!
estunum@reddit
You out there overlanding more than many of us. I applaud you.

Oh my god, that's so dumb...I'm fully in! Let's be friends.

Why?

I'll let Warren Harding answer for me
Illustrious-Tower849@reddit
I wish o fit in an MR2 they are so great
shatteredankle@reddit (OP)
Have you tried a 3rd Gen? im only 5'11", but I dont have the seat pushed all the way back when driving so I feel like someone at least a few inches taller than me could fit.
Illustrious-Tower849@reddit
I’m 6’7”, with short legs, my head sticks up over the top of the convertible roof
dinglebingle583@reddit
Incredible. I'm shocked and in awe all at once
crunch816@reddit
While I greatly appreciate all the pictures you've shared, but I need more. I love it.
shatteredankle@reddit (OP)
Thank you! The one I shared when i drove it up to Alaska was arguably more "overlandy" because it was actually down a slightly rough dirt road.
But, I figured y'all might like this one too because you guys like roof top tents.
OoRI0T_P0LICEoO@reddit
How are you gonna drop that reference without pics
shatteredankle@reddit (OP)
Here you go.
OoRI0T_P0LICEoO@reddit
Ahhhh what a cool shot. Thank you OP! Badass Mr2!
shatteredankle@reddit (OP)
Here's a shot of it all folded up.
Carollicarunner@reddit
That's literally the worst choice of car configuration for what you do. It's so stupid, unless you know it's stupid... then it's just belligerent? But adaptive. I've owned both a 1st, 2nd, gen mr2. The cooling and weight distribution is a concern.
Currently I do trips with a 22 Jeep gladiator and I'd love to meet you on the road some day. I love your rig, overall. It's super sick.
None of this is meant to be negative. I think you're crazy but I love it.
shatteredankle@reddit (OP)
I've also got an 87 land cruiser that I've had since high school and I've driven that up the PCH and it wasn't as fun. figured the convertible might be more fun. Also figured it could be a fun little project to see if I could design and put together a rooftop tent so that camping would be more comfortable for my passenger and me.
we slept in it for 12 nights and made it all the way from LAX up to the Oregon border and back down through the Sierra.
I'm a big fan of impractical things in general, but especially impractical cars. it feels to me that if you still love something despite it being of no obvious use value to you, then that means that you truly love it for what it is.
I love my mr2 and I love the silly little adventures that it takes me on.
I'll see you out there.
louiekr@reddit
Haha I have a landcruiser and a 93 miata. Everyone I’m going up some twisty mountain roads to go camping in the landcruiser I always find myself wishing I was in my Miata. So I honestly totally see where you’re going with this whole setup. But I agree, you are a little crazy.
shatteredankle@reddit (OP)
Exactly. And then I find myself on a long dirt road in the mr2 and I wish that I were in the Cruiser. At least we're not stuck with some boring middle of the road car like a Subaru that does both things poorly.
Carollicarunner@reddit
Sick reply, I love the angle. As long as that mr2 has the air and that front end has the traction I'm fully behind you. Love the mission. Good on you and best wishes
shatteredankle@reddit (OP)
Thank you, brother. She seems pretty sorted, but those were definitely concerns of mine too.
You gotta get yourself into a 3rd Gen!

Weird reply

Hammond you idiot

Top gear has definitely always been a huge inspiration. It felt like I was living the episode where they drive the 2 seater convertibles through Iraq to deliver presents to the baby Jesus in Palestine.
