Did you know it is possible to launch photoshop on linux now? I didn't, now I do, now I'm happy

You can launch photoshop installer and app itself through this:

I love using photoshop as much as I hate adobe, I hope it would be usefull for someone.
DudeLoveBaby@reddit
This is awesome but I just pay for photopea and have it installed as a web app instead lol
lmarcantonio@reddit
Krita has followers too. If it's better or worse than gimp depends on the use case.
DudeLoveBaby@reddit
Krita's fundamentally a bit different than Photoshop or GIMP, but it's good at what it is, yes. I would never think of doing photo editing in Krita though, just like how I wouldn't edit photos in PaintTool SAI lol

I had to stop using that for a dumb reason. I can't get the bloody colour to work. So if I try to fill something in red it does nothing.
I think I changed the fill type at some point and it keeps the setting between sessions so now it just never fills. I've tried selecting different ones but it still won't fill - normal, overlay, etc.
I think I've switched to a brush and tried painting and it does nothing... Cos of the colouring or brushing type.
Cos it's such a basic, dumb thing that I can't figure out I just gave up using the app!

And inkscape, though that's a different kind of beast

Gimp doesn't deserve the hate it gets. Been using it for years
DudeLoveBaby@reddit
Eh. I think it works fine for a lot of people but I think there's also a justified amount of backlash to it being called a PS replacement. The most recent update finally brought non-destructive editing which was the biggest hole for a long time in its features... but that's literally a 20-year lagtime on a feature that is super duper critical for a lot of use cases that aren't just casual photo editing.
I think people generally overuse Photoshop on Windows anyways, when they could be using something like Paint.NET, which is why GIMP seems like a 1:1 replacement for a lot of people.
Also, I will forever die on the hill that GIMP has the most dogshit defaults, both UI and hotkey, out of any program I've ever used, ever. I've only been computing for about fifteen years so I missed the Lotus-1-2-3s of the world so I'm not gonna say it's THE worst EVER, but it's the worst in my experiences.
Ok_Conclusion6465@reddit
And 3.0 or 3.2 made it even better

Honestly, I switched back to Linux last year after being on the Mac for two decades. In the early 2000es I didn’t like Gimp and also used Photoshop via wine. I gave Gimp another try and after a short period of familiarisation I actually like it now. Best thing is there are tons of tutorials out there nowadays.
Critical_Mongoose939@reddit
It does deserve the hate. If you do an UI-led app for users, and absolutely neglect usability and the interface for decades you deserve a roast.
I say this as a Gimp supporter, user and donor for years. Sometimes devs are just blind to the consequences of their decisions.
grem75@reddit
You could do it in 1996 too.
TheCrustyCurmudgeon@reddit
True, but I didn't need it then and still don't.
AmarildoJr@reddit
True, but after some years Adobe made it really difficult to do it. I think it's been last than 6 months that we've been able to run modern (i.e. the latest) versions on Linux.

Bro is old
Foxlike__Creature@reddit (OP)
Wow, didn't know that, it's cool!
At least now it is relevant, cause alot of new Linux users have troubles with proprietary adobe software.
grem75@reddit
Executor was pretty neat, it emulated enough of a MacOS environment to run a lot of software. Ran on a lot of *NIX, but also had a Windows and DOS version.
That is running on Red Hat 3.0.3. I tried to get a Windows 3.1 version of Photoshop running in Wabi, but it didn't want to run. WINE at this time didn't even have a chance, I don't think I tried.

Love your rice!
Critical_Mongoose939@reddit
Since we're in the business of helping people. You can skip the Adobe predatory bloat crap completely and make Gimp to look and feel like Photoshop: https://github.com/Diolinux/PhotoGIMP
10/10 would recommend. Very easy to install too!
V0dros@reddit
I wish GIMP was good, but PhotoGIMP just isn't enough to fix its UX issues and lack of features I'm afraid.
my-comp-tips@reddit
Might give this another go, tried this a few years ago without much success.
lKrauzer@reddit
My god you guys use the most alien desktops
dotdev_software@reddit
Why do you need Photoshop on Linux just curious ?
Majortom_67@reddit
Ohhh.... "Linux is for everybody" and now "why do you need Photoshop on Linux?"... 👏👏👏
Foxlike__Creature@reddit (OP)
I used Photoshop for a long time at a professional level, my work was related to this.
I don't like proprietary software, but I can't give up my usual workflow, change my interface habits, and accept the complete lack of the functions I need (if we're talking about GIMP)
I think there's 50% of my fault for laziness and 50% of adobe's fault for being adobe.
I pirated it anyway, so no profit for them.
asmx85@reddit
Can you please name a few?
my-comp-tips@reddit
Exactly the same situation for me.
AppropriateCover7972@reddit
ah, the ethical way to get Adobe. Sadly my version always malfunctioned

Fuck Adobe

I use Photoshop 7, it's old, no online activation, serial number only and works without any issues in Wine.
dummkauf@reddit
Too late, I already learned to use Gimp.
Sensitive_Box_@reddit
I don't, but I thought I read that only CS6 and below worked?
techsuppr0t@reddit
Wait, CS2 works on Linux? I managed to snag a free copy when the servers were shutting down and while the features are not as developed I am super familiar with using it. Gimp always makes me get stuck trying to get basic features to work, likely a me issue, but I was never super front of it. Lately I've been using a web based program I forgot the site name but flows just like photoshop and is pretty good.
ForceItDeeper@reddit
I had a legit copy when that shit went down and finding out they just decided I couldn't use my $600 software I decided to never give them another dollar
pomcomic@reddit
Photopea?
KnowZeroX@reddit
There have been some recent patches to wine within the last few months that made some adobe products work including photoshop, lightroom(minus the ai stuff) and etc.
Foxlike__Creature@reddit (OP)
I use ps2021, it works fine. Have some bugs cause of hyprland forsed tiling, but fixed it via windowrules.
Sensitive_Box_@reddit
Well that's cool, maybe I'll try it
Ok_Conclusion6465@reddit
what are you still missing in the latest gimp 3.2 release?
No-Priority-6792@reddit
Yes it's been around for a year, but people use a better editor
