ATC comms tips

I am working on PPL right now, and I have a slight problem. I keep missing comms. I will have tower, center, or service station reach out to me and I will occasionally miss them(causing them to call me again when I catch it) or sometimes I wont be ready and get the information wrong. What especially gets me is when there is a plane with a similar tail number to mine, causing me confusion. Are there any tips on how to get better at catching info and reading it back? This isnt constant and my instructor catches these mishaps but it happens enough that I dont like it and I want to do better since I will soon be flying solo.

Say "student pilot" and they will probably talk slower to you.
Eventually you'll get it.

Just remember, they’re just dudes and sweatshirts and sweats in there who’s you’re talking to no need to be intimidated and they’re always there to help you they want to help

It's a team effort.

The fact of the matter is that every pilot learns to shut up for one second when atc starts talking until you hear the callsign they are speaking to. Never just ignore a new transmission from ATC assuming it's not for you. At least listen to the first half-second.

Are you consistently flying the same airplane, or different planes?
One tip: Every time you hear ATC start up a fresh tail number, glance at your tail number placard on the panel.
This gets easier with time and practice - it's a little like hearing your name called out in a crowd.

I listened to live ATC for my local airport. I’d do it while driving. While sitting on the couch. While cutting the lawn. And so on. While doing it I’d build a mental picture of what was happening.
The benefits are:

It will get easier without the instructor next to you. Until then - just practice, and listen to liveATC
