100% genuine Bentley CRT TV unit.
Fragrant-Plum-6798@reddit
Add an hdmi input on a crt and it gets even more confusing
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
Any CRT with an antenna port can be adapted to HDMI with what's called an RF Modulator. Very cheap on Amazon.

So this is a Bentley portable TV in a Mitsubishi 3000gt?

Highly memorable cars to drive
IISerpentineII@reddit
The dash looks very familiar. Is this a 3000GT?
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
Yep! Very modified first gen
IISerpentineII@reddit
What happened to it to make it a project car, if you don't mind me asking? I'm curious because that is a lot of modification, and most people don't buy solid VR4s to heavily mod like this (assuming yours is a VR4).
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
Mine was actually an SL Fwd model! (I could never destroy a VR-4. Feels too rare to fine one in full working condition.)
I lost timing twice on the original engine, and the lack of real aftermarket support led me to the idea to replace all systems with versions that are very well supported nowadays with good forum coverage.
Not to mention, even a VR-4 in best condition is still a 6G72 transverse engine with a five/six speed and open difs everywhere. You can't push those engines easily, the transmissions aren't bulletproof, the transverse nature means torque steer is always a thing, and open difs means the awd isn't predictable.
Mine is now a GM8100 and a built up 4L80 in longitudinal format. That and the helical differential in the rear solid axle should buy me a lot more performance potentials.
At the very least, I understand my machine better than I did when it was stock.
IISerpentineII@reddit
I'm glad you didn't do this to an intact VR4, lol. Regardless, this is a seriously cool build.
In regards to VR4 potential handling issues, while I'm careful with my VR4 (stock except for the ECS board and a shifter), I've never encountered torque steering or wheel slip beyond a quick chirp from the tires. The AWD power split with 55% going to the rear helps mitigate/prevent those issues. You'd also be surprised at how much the bottom end can take on these, assuming you have the 4-bolt forged crank. There are also clutched limited-slip rear ends made for these that are supposed to just bolt in and replace the VCU, but it's really expensive and the unit needs frequent fluid changes apparently. Like, same interval as a standard oil change frequent.
But yeah, if you're building for really huge power, the transmissions aren't designed to handle a ton more than stock, and the overall system does not appreciate shock in stock form. Making it so everything can make and handle really high hp is very doable, but it's also quite expensive. This is all kind of a moot point since this an SL though, lol.
While I'm normally not a fan of throwing Chevy engines in anything not a Chevy for the most part (specifically throwing a 350 or an LS in something that has equally viable engines from the same brand as the car), it's not like Mitsubishi has a much of a catalog of big hp longitudinal setups for cars, and this is definitely an original idea. Sticking an 8.1L in a 3000GT is absolutely nuts (in a good way), and I really want to hear and see this thing moving now, especially if this is a 1st gen 3000GT. The only thing that would make it better is if it had a manual, but I bet that would've been an absolute nightmare to pull off. Considering you went with a solid rear axle, it also seems like this is going to be a drag car, so as much as it pains me to say it, the automatic is the better choice from a performance perspective as well since a manual would be slower on the drag strip :(
As much as this build absolutely slaps, I want to see you do another one of these builds with the drivetrain from a wrecked Viper now, lmao.
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
Honestly, I almost went the route of a WR12 from an audi at the start, but that's a unique kindof fuck-you money I don't have.
As counter intuitive as this may sound, I'm focused on durability and life. That 8.1 built right can output dumb torque and respectable horsepower while barely getting warmed up. With good maintenance, they can reach 500k miles. And we rebuilt the 4L80 with a much firmer shifter and oil system upgrade. With the aftermarket controller, we will have sequential shifting capabilities, so not all the manual is gone.
When this car was manual it was the first manual I ever had, and the heat discoloration on the flywheel absolutely revealed that xD
I'll miss a 5 speed manual, it was so much fun, but I'm willing to sacrifice that third pedal to eliminate wear and money shifting potential.
If I'm ever going to build a third wild one, it probably will have a Lenco.
IISerpentineII@reddit
It's also a unique kind of fuck-you to yourself since I'm assuming you'd do all of your own work. Everything I see and hear about Audi engine work is nightmare fuel cough 4.2L cough. It's also, as you said, a unique fuck-you to your wallet.
And no, it doesn't sound counterintuitive to me to go for durability as the primary goal unless you're building for competition drag racing. Once I'm in a better position to do so, I plan on throwing some expensive shit at my 4.6 3v Mustang to rev to the moon without constant maintenance or fear of breaking. >!It's titanium valves unless titanium keeps going up in price. 8k+ safe redline is the goal.!<
Since you're going to have sequential shifting capabilities, you can go extra nuts and do what some hill climb cars do and have paddle shifters connected to an electric motor that moves the shift knob so you have both paddles and knob as options whenever you want.
You said for your 3rd build, you'd use a Lenco transmission. What was the first build?
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
The first build was rebuilding the stock engine, but I bolstered the bottom end and swapped for forged internals. The wild card was the entire M90 supercharger conversion kit I designed and made. Had liquid to air intercoolers on top and a 3D printed aluminum intake manifold.
Until a bad serpentine belt snuck behind the timing cover and caused lost timing, I was pushing near 300hp. Just never fully tuned it in. Plus, any power with FWD and an open dif is pointless.

Only car that could be made better by adding more electronics to it.
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
Ehhhh.
Thats arguably one of the top reasons the car was lost to JDM history.
You have to be daft enough to dive into electrical engineering to work around the 30 year fragile systems well pas their prime.
Wickedsnake00@reddit
I always thought it was mainly-
"Be careful, the transmission likes to explode. Also if you aren't religious about the timing belt, the engine will also explode."
"Well I'll just have to keep on top of those things."
"...yeah also it's 10lbs of crap jammed into a 5lb engine bay, so...good luck with that."
Very much in the "Awesome cars...when they run" category.
phate_exe@reddit
On one hand, you've gotta applaud the level of ambition Mitsubishi threw at these cars - AWD, twin turbocharged V6, 4 wheel steering, adaptive suspension, dual mode exhaust, and active aero.
On the other hand, all of those things were done using late-80's/very-early-90's electronics. By Mitsubishi.
dbu8554@reddit
Yeah it was sarcasm, I'm an electrical engineer and I think these things are a fucking nightmare before you even get to the electrical system.
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
I agree
I've spent the last year replacing all fragile, low aftermarket support systems with versions fully supported. Suspension, engine, transmission... All very common and well understood in forums.
As for the electrical? I gutted all aspects of the car and have been systematically rewiring everything to my own schematics and documentation. It's a ton easier than reverse engineering Mitsubishi's odd designs.
AEternal1@reddit
You know whats wild? I have come to the same conclusion when I restore limos it is easier to just throw away the master con and re-engineer all the electronics from scratch.
Sir-Belledontis@reddit
I completely agree with you on ripping out the old wires and running your own stuff. I’m in the middle of a rewire on a 86 Ford Diesel, and I’m having to run multiple new looms to correct the design flaws from the factory

That is sick!!! What are you using to run it? Pi or a custom pcb?
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
Pi for now, but I have a feeling it'll be more specialized.
Pi has a bit too much boot time to be super practical. Good for prototyping though!
PimpCheese@reddit
Keep us in the loop on your progress! I’m planning on doing something similar with my 1976 Celica as a means to display a wide band readout while looking period, ideally with a song 503 portable. Im going to follow you! I’m been trying to “retro upgrade” my radio and make an older aesthetic infotainment. Also prototyped with a pi.

If I read the other comments correctly, not only did you put this batshit dash together but also have a... Big block GM v8 in it? H... How? No way there's any of the original drivetrain... And no real transmission tunnel in these cars.. Didja cut it up?
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)
So. Much. Fab work. Yes.
Had to make a custom tunnel, custom subframe, swapped the front with a Mustang 2 assembly, and the rear with a triangulated 4 link ad a Ford 9in.
Lots of work.
ingannilo@reddit
So it's a Mopar/Mitsubishi mashup with Ford underpinnings from the world's most hated mustang, and an archaic ancient GM v8?

I'm working on a similar concept for my Corvair, the intention was to use an amber CRT, however they're getting very hard to find. I'm looking at taking a monochrome LCD and backlighting it with amber instead.
I found a nice ultra wide daylight visible display to put behind the dash, and the display to the right of the shifter is the original Prius cluster from the donor car.
malauk@reddit
Oh hell yes, I was going to use a small crt in my 62 corvair to make a period looking infotainment screen for the radio.
Vengeful-Wraith@reddit (OP)

It's both not hard and annoy at the same time.
Any CRT system with an antenna port can be upgraded to HDMI with an RF Modulator. The imae shown on the screen? I'm still working that out. In theory, a raspberry pi with the right setup and a gps module to display speed data is enough for a speedometer.
I'm still working out those details.
