how do they power this?
the amount of energy this would take is purely absurd. would be fun to do a back of the envelope calculation on evaporating that much rock/soil. guess it depends on the tunnel diameter, too

3am. First flight of trip. Going to be flying with this captain for 15 days. "So what do you think about abortion?"
At least that woke me up.
Affectionate_Aspect4@reddit
"Turns out this is where God sends the abortions captain, we've all been aborted, but given extended time. People don't actually die where we're from."
melloboi123@reddit
Forgive me for being a young one but was this question always such a double edged sword? I'm just 18 but never had heard of it as anything other than a medical procedure people could up until a certain group of people started bringing it up in a disgraceful way.
johnisom@reddit
The left thinks of it as a medical procedure. The right thinks of as the taking of an innocent life and potential.
johnisom@reddit
I'm confused why I'm being downvoted, I believe this is what the 2 sides are? Obviously this is why it's so controversial, weighing these two against each other

And some moral philosophers consider it mandatory

Why are we here?
It's one of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know, man, but it keeps me up at night.
What? I mean why are we out here? Why did crew scheduling call us and leave us here for hours for no good reason?
ImBored5336@reddit
I’m not sure which answer would be more amazing, that the universe is completely natural and happened outside of influence, or there is a creator.
If it was created by someone or something, who’s watching and why? And who’s to say we won’t be able to do the same thing?
And if it is natural, how many universe cycles did it take for one with life to happen, are we the first? So many things had to be exactly right, constants such as gravity, dark energy, the speed of light. The charge and mass of particles that allow them to bond and create larger things, atoms, molecules.
Even the Big Bang, a nearly equal amount of matter and anti matter were created that then should’ve all annihilated each other, but they didn’t. There was 1 extra matter particle for every billion pairs that annihilated each other, our universe and entire existence is a result of that imbalance. Why did this all happen? Is it always this way or is the norm for the 2 matters to completely dissolve each other.
Actually I think it would be way more interesting if the universe was completely natural and not a creation, but either way, there’s a billion more questions once we figure it out.
TheKerj2@reddit
What will really get your noggin goin is, if time is truly infinite, then everything that’s ever happened, or will happen, will happen again, and has already happened, an infinite number of times.
KITTYONFYRE@reddit
this isn't true, there would need to be a way for the 2nd law of thermodynamics to be violated for it to be true. entropy always increases: just because time is infinite doesn't mean you can unburn your toast
this is a bastardization of the infinite monkey theorem maybe
Mach_v_manchild@reddit

Hi
Oregon-Pilot@reddit
Last leg of the trip I found out the captain had been out for years due to being in the HIMS program and recovering from substance abuse. I hadn't really jived that well with him the whole trip, but that opened up a whole different view and new respect for him because I've been very close to people with substance abuse issues my whole life and I've seen how hard it can be. So awesome that he made it through and is thriving.
jungle_jet@reddit
I flew a guy a few times who was just an absolute a-hole to me. Ive flown with guys who are in general a-holes, but this was the first time it was personal. Won't list all the reasons but in my now 15 year career, only times I've had a personal problem with a pilot.
A few years later, I found out he would end up going through the HIMS program. A fellow coworker who also shared my views of said pilot said it excused their behavior.
That is something I wrestle with if I think about it. Does it? I agree the person had a disease that needed treatment and I was on the receiving end of their symptoms. But at the same time, one still has control of their own actions.
Tough call. Hell, this debate could meet the description of this thread, lol.
Oregon-Pilot@reddit
I don’t think it excuses being an asshole. In my case, he wasn’t mean, he just had a kind of strong personality, which often times isn’t my favorite because I’m pretty reserved/shy and a bit of an introvert. He was a little blunt for my taste, but not mean or anything.
kristephe@reddit
Maybe it explains it but doesn't excuse it? I definitely could seeing being one impacted by those impacted by the terrible behavior being told to just get over it because the disease excuses it and that feeling very invalidating of the pain and impact of the behaviors.

how dating and messing around with flight attendants messes u up
Legrange_Theorem@reddit
What makes it so bad? Can a good relationship really never come from a pilot and a FA who met on the job?
mfsp2025@reddit
It absolutely can.
I think it comes from the stereotypical pilot with a stereotypical flight attendant. Those personalities probably clash and don’t work out well.
But one of my buddies met a FA and they’re engaged with a kid and a house. They seem really happy. And I think she’s no longer working as a FA anymore.
Legrange_Theorem@reddit
What’s the stereotypical pilot and FA in your opinion? I’m not in aviation btw so idk
juneballoon@reddit
Stereotypical pilot is probably Republican white man that can’t talk about his feelings (partly stems from not being allowed to since arcahic FAA rules about mental health), is a serial cheater even though he spouts conservative “family-oriented” views. Boring, bland, and prefers to live in a rural place.
Stereotypical FA is probably an emotional and vindictive woman who loves to gossip and party and is really into New Age type nonsense like astrology and crystals and essential oils. Generally non-scientific oriented mind. Or she may be the sweetest thing ever but dumb as a box of rocks.
They are both raging alcoholics.
These are just stereotypes!!!

I was flying with a friend of mine, and we were both between places.
It was a long four-hour cross-country run, and at about midnight. We talked about our future, what we want to do, and girls and our parents. It was really deep and a really good flight.
After that flight, I had to move back home because I couldn’t afford to continue living that far away without a job, but I didn’t really want to go… long story short, I’m back down there!
theglobalnomad@reddit
While doing instrument training in Utah, I had a CFII who showed up to our first flight in an "Ex-Mormon Drinking Team" T-shirt. Both of us were formerly religious. We talked about God, faith, the meaning of life, and questioning all of it over the endless desert while I flew under foggles to the godforsaken Mormon drinking and gambling outpost known as West Wendover, Nevada.

LearningDumbThings@reddit
It’s sort of the perfect set up, isn’t it? You’re a trusted mentor in his life, but you’re relatable because you’re probably closer to his age than his parents. You also probably don’t know anybody else in his world, so if he tells you, it won’t get around the rumor mill in his high school or whatever. You’re sitting side by side with something to do, so no awkward eye contact and plenty of easy outs to the conversation, but still enough time to talk about it. It’s about the best “test case” for somebody who wants to come out but is afraid or doesn’t know how. You should wear it as a badge of honor.

Flying with a F/O who went a rant about noise pollution and how we need to do something about it. During a XC training flight early on in my flying training days I meet a former professor of evolutionary theory. He had flown his whole life in a bunch of GA planes he owned then worked up to his 50s and got a job flying 747 freighters as an SO then FO for an Asian airline and then retired and instructed in his 60s.
I ended up buying his book and he was a good instructor (I think?). But I left with so many questions. He also popped the window during a practice hold.
He started the conversation about turtles vs tortoises and how that happened and pressed the conversation and questions with decent answers (but hammered me on freq changes). I remember being 18 or 19 getting to the car post debrief thinking about what started turtles and tortoises, why one can live on land and why the other has fresh and saltwater adaptations.
Took a bit to get to sleep that night. Flight went well apparently but I couldn't tell you anything about it other than the line of questioning and discussion.

As the only (out) gay in the base at my old company, I had several captains of older generations ask me to explain what a pronoun or a non binary is.
Most to my surprise actually genuinely wanted to learn and do better. One was looking for an excuse to “own the liberals” though. Hope he enjoyed his mandatory diversity training ordered by HR…
