Why do my CPU temps spike after a couple hours of gaming?

Hi, this is my first time in this subreddit, but a little bit of background, I built a pc a couple of months ago. I have a r7 7800x3d with an arctic freezer 36, and when playing games like siege my temps range from about 65-75. However after about 2 hrs I notice my temps are at 80-85 and don’t drop down in between rounds when there is obviously less load on the cpu. I also noticed that when temps were at 85, the heatsink wasn’t very warm. Could my cpu cooler be mounted badly? Anyone have any other ideas?

Since your heatsink stays cool while the CPU hits 85°C, the heat definitely isn't transferring properly. You should try repasting and remounting the cooler to make sure it's making tight, even contact with the chip. Also, double check that you didn't leave the plastic peel on the bottom of the cooler by mistake.

Exactly this…Definitely repaste and make sure the plastic peel is definitely off. I have the 7800X3D with Thermalright Phantom Spirit dual tower air cooler and my temps never go above 65C even in 1080p max settings.

Wow, even when running games at high fps?
FatalGamer1@reddit
Yeah in all resolutions and fps.
Have a look at my YT channel. I showcase gameplays and how my PC performs. I do videos on all resolutions and graphics settings and have an overlay showing in my videos.
