Free 28' Morgan

Will donate or gift. Built in 1969; hull #40. 16hp yanmar. Aluminum mast. Needs some work to get back in the water---I'd be glad to help. Located on the hard in Cape Cod MA. Free to a good home, otherwise will have to scrap this summer. Heartbreaking but it is what it is.

Is that a tiger cub?
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Not sure what you mean but Sophie is a 1969 Morgan sloop. No model name that I know of. I know they named their later models.... but not this one AFAIK.
texasrigger@reddit
The tiger cub was Morgan's first production sailboat. It was a 28.5' boat that they made from the mid to late 60s. It was a great boat for its era. There's only a handful of them still around and I was wondering if this was one of them. Google Morgan tiger cub and it should pop right up. Does yours have the solid bronze swing centerboard?

Very cool!! Thank you for the info..... Maybe she's one of those but I've never seen it in her paperwork. I'll share a pic of her owners manual in a moment.
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Omg, mopast of the manual appears to have faded inside its binder.... But maybe this might help?

Its been years since Ive looked at any of this stuff but I just googled the Columbia 31 and it already existed by the time your boat was built so yours must have been Morgan's follow-up to the tiger cub.

Adding more info since folks have reached out and I've finally typed up some answers: No trailer; she's 28' with 9' beam and 3.5' draft. Need a crane to step the mast. I don't have current pics; she's shrink wrapped & looks pretty bad. She cleans up easy but there are issues to address; I'll try to be concise about what Sophie would need at minimum. Life circumstances changed at the end of 2015 and required me to ignore the boat for many yrs. Forestay snapped in a storm in nov 2015 so likely new forestay and RF jib. (Unless someone doesn't want RF.) The boatyard she's stored at had a "mishap" in 2020 and damaged the bowsprit. They'd be willing to help repair that. I was in the process of trying to put a better head in as well as tune up the brass winches.' both jobs were only halfway done. Yanmar would need tune up; might need old fuel pumped out. Major interior/exterior cleaning; compound & wax hull; bottom paint. Check all thru hulls (last replaced in 2001). Centerboard apparently fell out during a sail in 2003 but we never noticed until she was hauled out for over-winter. We continued to sail without CB after that. (Prev owner said he never used the CB in all his yrs of sailing btwn cape and ft lauderdale.) I'd give all the teak a sand & seal. There are likely some small leaks around the deck hardware. (We checked & dealt with that yrly.) One of the cockpit cushions is ripped at the zipper. Dodger would likely need replacing although it may still be functional. Sails are very old but they were fine enough for our purposes. Not sure how the electronics (depthfinder & radio) have held up with the disuse. Not sure if sure the batteries will hold a charge anymore.

Sea Scouts
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Thank you; they said no. I promise; I've tried pretty much everyone. Even NPR and AmVets. Likely too big and costly.....that's my guess.
Far_District9145@reddit
You might check to see if the Scouts or Sea Scouts will take it as a donation. I gave them my ancient, dead minivan and they came and got it out of my driveway. I guess they sell donations at auction and make a bit of cash. Not sure if they do boats (Sea Scouts, right?), but worth a shot.
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Thank you:) Tried that; they don't want her, likely for reasons noted above. Appreciate you tho!

Maybe donate to a club?
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
I reached out & offered to all the diff scouting troops on cape over the past yr; no takers prob'ly cuz she is really too large for casual trailer-ing, is old and needs work. I just wish i could find someone who's wanting one of the old morgans.
Hawk_Outdoors@reddit
I was also thinking Sea Scouts. Neat organization.
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Yah! My son was a sea scout on the outer cape. Thought for sure they'd want it, but nope:)

Morgan Free man?
leegoos@reddit
wow. super beautiful; i'm from around there, but unfortunately there is no way I would be able to take care of a boat like that.
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the kind comment! but she is not currently in that condition. That was after her refit back in 2014.... She's been on the hard; currently shrink wrapped but def in need of work. She cleans up really easily (lots of fiberglass and some teak). Motor was in excellent condition; hasn't been started since 2020 though....It would be a lengthy (but not impossible) list of things needing upgrade or repair.... Some of which depends on owner preference & purpose??

What works does she need? Sending a DM
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Thanks for asking:) Would you still like an answer knowing she is not in the condition seen in the photo? That's her potential:) She really was wonderful but quite a lot to maintain. She was a passion of mine for many yrs.
m00f@reddit
Rare to see a free boat that actually looks like it's in decent shape. I'll be she finds a new home quickly.
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
She is not currentlly in this shape---that was after I refit her back in 2014. Unfortunately she's been on the hard since late 2015 and was not protected as well as she should have been.
She isn't far from launchable, but it would require both time and money....on top of the passion imho.

Find a High School that still teaches shop classes and give it to them.
DisastrousBug5755@reddit (OP)
Thanks:) I offered to all the cape high schools (esp trhe vo-techs), 4Cs and MMA.....No takers likely due to see above. THANKS FOR trying to help tho:)
