Long John Silver’s was maybe my favorite restaurant as a kid in the 80s and early 90s - who else had weird favorites from this time period?
Posted by jtmann05@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 1176 comments
I went with my grandparents and parents many times in those years and my old man continued to request it for his birthday dinner for years. I still get it from time to time when I go back to visit my mom. I know it’s wildly unhealthy and objectively not high quality, but I think they have the best fast food chicken tenders in the game.
Anybody else have restaurants they love that have fallen out of favor or gone defunct altogether?
Droidspecialist297@reddit
Fazolis! Loved the fettuccine Alfredo as a kid. They opened a new Fazolis in my new town 20 years later and that shit is nasty
S0bchak@reddit
Schlotchkys and Hot N Now.
kirby34@reddit
They just built a new Hot ‘n Now last year near Gun Lake Casino. Unfortunately, the prices are nowhere close to what made them so popular.
While going to college, but living at home, in the late 90’s, I could get 3 cheeseburgers, a fry, and a water for $2. Was great for a broke college student.
S0bchak@reddit
I had a friend who worked at the Alpine Ave Grand Rapids location who would ALWAYS hook up me and a car full of friends with lots of extra free food. I loved the cheese teasers and olive burger. I didn't even really like olives back then. Haven't been to the new one, but I've seen the prices, and they're weak.
LumpyJump6091@reddit
Schlotsky's had a deal several years ago where for something like $50, you got a free small Original every week for a year. My ex and I got it, used it practically every week that year, then vowed to never go there again.
MisChanandalerBong@reddit
Was just thinking about Hot N Now the other day. So much food for so cheap!
S0bchak@reddit
Yep, 39 pennies, a steal even at the time.
NerdyTeacher77@reddit
Love me some Schlotsky’s as an adult, but hated it as a kid. We still have one here in Omaha.

Fazoli’s was next level.

I went to one in Plant City a few years ago and was greatly disappointed they no longer had unlimited breadsticks. And, their breadsticks were terrible, so, even if they were unlimited, I didn’t want any extra.

There’s supposedly one back here (ish, a city/suburb over). I’m tempted by nostalgia.

I just drove through Wisconsin and they are definitely still around, we saw several!

Holy shit, I haven't even thought of Fazoli's in about a decade. I used to love that place! Italian Food.....Fast.
Stock-Swing-797@reddit
I was on a long drive with my brother recently, we ended up talking about Fazoli's, and the concept of Italian fast food. The overhead with how cheap bulk pasta and sauce must be, has to be insane.
antithero@reddit
It used to be good, but the last 2 times I went there it was garbage.

Po'Folks used to be fuckin awesome
shed1@reddit
I used to eat my weight in popcorn shrimp. Now Po'Folks is long gone and my body can't even handle gluten/wheat.
tampaempath@reddit
If you're in Florida, you'll be happy to know Po'Folks is still around (barely). There are five left; four in the Florida panhandle and one in St Pete. Not as good as it used to be, but still there.
kirby34@reddit
I’m not too far from the one in St Pete and used to go to church near there. Was always happy to eat there after church.
Stock-Swing-797@reddit
Went to one in Broward when we were kids. Baby brother (8 or 9 ish) apparently thought he had some big boy pants on, and ordered the fried catfish. The look on everyone's face when they brought it out, and that sucker was staring back 🤣🤣🤣, I'll never forget.
thedisnerdiest@reddit
SAME. For me it was the chicken drumstick kids meal. We used to go to Po' Folks on Sundays and it was always great. At least in my memory it was great.
cbih@reddit
Ugh, same. All my favorite food betrayed me.
shed1@reddit
I will say that I have had some food deep fried in corn starch that is good af. We make it at home sometimes, but in some places you can find it in restaurants. Portland, ME had some awesome GF deep fried seafood options.
No-Succotash-3221@reddit
Yes! There was one in south Sacramento. I make fried okra sometimes and reminisce sometimes
According_Love2510@reddit
I was coming here to say Po’Folks! Popcorn shrimp and playing checkers while you waited for a table. My grandparents used to take use there about once a month. Good memories
timmytoads@reddit
Came in here to say this. Fried okra a winner fo sho
onthestickagain@reddit
Came to the comments looking for this. The fried okra, man. Ain’t nothing can match it (except for a granny making it in a skillet with cornmeal… but I can’t even compare the two, really, they’re both their own version of heaven)
jennbear@reddit
We would always go to Po’ Folks when we would visit my grandparents! I would insist on wearing pigtails because, if I remember correctly, I had a T-shirt from there with a girls with pigtails and I wanted to match. Didn’t they also have the glasses shaped like boots, too?
Kellzy1212@reddit

I still love Arby's. My mom says it's because she ate a ton of it while she was pregnant with me, and as a kid I'd beg for it any time we went to town. Now they're everywhere, but back then the closest one to us was in Des Moines.

I miss Arby’s! There’s one about 25min away from me, which just isn’t convenient enough to make the trip worth it.
The beef n’ cheddar lives rent free in my head.
TiltedSkipper@reddit
They discontinued the cordon bleu in 2020. My favorite sandwich of any fast food chain, staple birthday food for me for 25 years. I haven't been back, f u arbys corporate.
canisdirusarctos@reddit
Arby’s hasn’t changed any classic item in any perceivable way in about 30 years. It still tastes like it did when my brother was working there.
TiltedSkipper@reddit
They removed the cordon Bleu sandwich from their menu in mid 2020. It was my favorite sandwich and only reason I went.
I got deployed for a year in 2020. My wife asked me what I wanted for food when I got back home and it was the Arby's cordon bleu. Got off that airplane, we went straight to Arby's, asked for the sandwich, sorry sir thats discontinued. I nearly lost my shit. Wanted that sandwich all year sitting in the damn middle east desert.

LoL. I remember when Marshalltown got theirs, I was pretty pumped because it was a good bit closer than Des Moines. I used to come up with excuses to run up there all the time.
edfitz83@reddit
They completely changed the cheddar sauce for beef & cheddar and now it sucks.
canisdirusarctos@reddit
Really? Dammit. The last time I went there it brought me back to those nights driving around with my brother when I’d stuff a BBC down my throat.
edfitz83@reddit
Perhaps I have a different understanding of what a BBC is…

Bacon Beef ‘n’ Cheddar

edfitz83@reddit
Don’t Google BBC.
Reasonable-Turn-5940@reddit
I hated burgers as a kid so when our family decided to get some drive thru I always pushed for either Arby's or Taco Bell
I love the Arby's French dip. So salty and good. I still get it once in awhile if I want a comfort food.
canman7373@reddit
The roast and cheddar is still good, the gyro is aright too, but Arby's is just so expensive now, like $13 for a meal.
Less_Likely@reddit
I still like Arby’s a couple time a year. If they had the Cordon Bleu as an everyday item, I’d probably go more often. The chicken sandwiches have diminished in quality
TrixieBastard@reddit
If you like fish, Arby's has the tastiest fast food fish sandwiches I've ever had (and I live in the land of Culver's, whose cod sandwich is usually ranked the best fish sandwich in fast food. I still think Arby's is better, which is surprising even to me).
aubreypizza@reddit
Same. When I was a kid and we got to have a nice dinner for our birthdays, I wanted Arby’s. Great memories of skipping HS and getting Arby’s always with curly fries and a jamocha shake.
TrixieBastard@reddit
Those jamocha shakes were TOO good, they complemented the curly fries perfectly
anniemdi@reddit
All my mom could eat with me was Burger King cheese burgers. I still enjoy the smell and would not turn down going there, lol

Jean_Paul_Fartre_@reddit

anonymoususer98545@reddit
i used to obsessively love Arby's as a kid. i became a vegetarian (unrelated to Arby's, lol) right before i turned 12 so i obviously haven't had it in about a million years but, every once in a while, i think about how good it was to me then.

According_Drawing_59@reddit
We had a Perkins crew in high school. My friends and I would hang out for hours, drinking way too much coffee and eating chocolate chippers. The waitstaff hated us at first, then they seemed to warm up to us. I doubt we ever tipped.
Frequent_Alfalfa_347@reddit
Perkins was my high school late night hangout. Theater nerds and band geeks who didn’t drink, but wanted to stay up chatting and eating Worms in Dirt sundaes. In retrospect, we could not have tipped well.
TheRealCOCOViper@reddit

Breakfast at Shoney's, for two ninety nine
Head-Reindeer-4082@reddit
When I was in medical school, on exam days (tests were usually started at 8 AM), I’d get up and be there shortly after they opened at 5 AM. The staff quickly remembered me and always seated me in a booth so I could spread out my study papers. I’d have a hearty breakfast and the waitress (I had the same one every time and over 30 years later I remember her face but have long since forgotten her name) knew why I was there and she kept my coffee cup full. By the time it was time to leave for school, I was well fed and caffeinated to an alert and not jittery state. I remember the hollow eyes of classmates who clearly hadn’t slept and probably neglected breakfast as well. Even though my finances were decidedly not robust (my dad was a truck driver but I had scholarships and small student loans to make up living expenses the scholarship didn’t cover), I tipped my server well because I took up a booth in her station for over 2 hours those mornings. I’m sure she must have passed long ago, but when I think of the people who helped me get through medical school, she’s one of them.

We always stopped at a hotel that had a Shoney's next to it when I traveled with my grandparents because of the breakfast bar. In 2019, I took my son to one for breakfast on our way to scout camp out of state, and it was sad how dead it was on a Saturday morning. No breakfast bar either. I remember them being packed and having to wait for a table. I think it was us and a couple of older locals that day.
FlamingoResident7882@reddit
Yesssss I loved their salad bar as a kid! There used to be one off 75 in a NW GA town that was open until just a few years ago.

I remember going on vacation, staying a motel (before they all had free breakfast) and getting Shoney’s before hitting the road. Pretty sure I have a Shoney’s bear somewhere in my childhood stuff. I was borderline obsessed.
samwise58@reddit
There’s a reason early Rick n Morty had Rick at a Shoney’s with his family as a core-good memory towards the beginning of the series.
I absolutely thought Shoney’s breakfast buffet was the most amazing thing in the world. Ponderosa was our main “fancy dining with a buffet” place to go on special occasions.

dataman1960@reddit
When Fudruckers first opened they had a bakery that made fresh rolls all day. They also had a full butchery. They would bring in sides of beef and cut them down to make hamburger patties. It was as fresh as you could possibly get. Of course the model wasn’t sustainable, but it was impressive.

eLishus@reddit
I've wanted to go back for nostalgia's sake, and my wife has never been (she loves a good burger). But there are so many better restaurants in that area; I'm perplexed how it remains open. I'm days late here, but Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen has one and it's exactly the same as the one Bennigans had. Their fries are similar too. Idk if there is some ownership crossover or something but I have been to one in Orlando near the airport and one in Indianapolis and it was good.

wawaluvr@reddit
I have so much nostalgia for Ponderosa. When I was a kid, it was the height of fine dining. Waiting in line to go in with all the lighted displays of the entrees. I don’t even remember what we were allowed to order, but I expect it was whatever was the lowest price. We then made trip after trip to the buffet, culminating in the sundae bar at the end. It was glorious!
Smooth_Ad2778@reddit
I said "that was the tits" about five years ago, and people lost their damn minds. No one knew what I was talking about. Then I was told that was offensive (I am a woman). I am so glad someone else says it.

A few of my friends like it still, and there is one in town. It's like $27 for a steak and salad bar now, and it's....not good. Even the dessert bar is terrible now, if it's even working.
And sadly COVID killed Izzy's, which was an Oregon chain of buffets that actually slapped. Pizza bar, soup bar, salad bar, hot food bar with the best mashed potatoes and garlic green beans and gravy and roast chicken, all you can eat steaks and other grillables, and full dessert bar with cupcakes and cinnamon rolls and brownies and ice creams.....

Oh Big Boy was my favorite! It was 30 minutes away, so going there was a rare treat. There was something oddly enticing about that big boy character statue. Like it was going to be fun! And a salad bar…. I loved it!
Remember how the salad bar had greenery- loose dark salad leaves - surrounding everything on the salad bar? It was for decoration. Once, my mother noticed a server pick up one of the leaves from the floor and put it back on the salad bar. She thought that was disgusting and unhygienic. And we never went again.
jtmann05@reddit (OP)

ChillWaveSurfer@reddit
I too loved Long John’s. They had the coolest kids meal with the treasure chest box that hid the toy in the bottom. Aesthetically, very nostalgic place.
Of course, now you go and they’re usually with an A&W, so you can pick up a root beer to take home for floats afterwards!
Elenakalis@reddit
I was a Captain D's girl. My husband will grudgingly go with me when we're far enough south that we see them. They're one of the few places that tastes just like I remember (or maybe it's just that I still put the same amount of malt vinegar on it).
Our Long John Silver's has a KFC instead of an A&W.
erilaz7@reddit
Ours was combined with a KFC, too, but the Long John Silver's portion closed during COVID and now it's just a KFC.
PoisonMind@reddit
Ah, yes, my family when to Captain D's many times in Charleston. I always liked the interior decoration: nautical flags, heavy ropes, and shiny brass. I used to ask for extra cracklins, the little bits of fried batter. Probably not the healthiest option.
Shrimp__Boy@reddit
When I was little, the kids meal came in a box that looked like the restaurant.
They also has these mini drum sticks called "Peg Legs" that were to die for.
dani_oso@reddit
The Long John’s in my town never joined A&W and still doesn’t have a drive-thru. It still mostly looks like the one in this picture.
footsnax@reddit
The one here is the only one that's ever been nearby and has been unchanged since time immemorial. It is incredible to walk in there. Smells the same, looks the same, they still have the hats and everything.
It's like if Pizza Hut still had the red cups and fancy lights and noisy seats and you're 12 again just stopping by to get your Book It slice.
It's like they stayed open out of pure spite because they knew the nostalgia crowd would keep them alive down the road. I think it's even the same operators too, they were just like "this is perfect" and changed nothing. They're playing 80s-D chess.
ChillWaveSurfer@reddit
That’s beautiful, I love throwback restaurants like that!
CptNemo55@reddit
This may blow your mind, but they have ice cream at A&W and they will even put it together with root beer at the restaurant, if you ask them to.
Solintari@reddit
Same. I put so much malt vinegar on my fish that I had to hold my breath so I would t get into a coughing fit.
My dad was like…

Hey, they’re aren’t still trucking bc they’re giving the food away. Gotta maximize that profit per customer since they only get about 3-4 hundred a year.

BidInteresting8923@reddit
For real. My favorite thing there (and from the comments it appears I wasn’t the only one) was the crunchies. Literally only deep fried batter. It clearly wasn’t a great idea. I’m actually surprised it’s even still legal. Like places ban soft drinks but allow that horrible/awesome menu choice.
deltashmelta@reddit
Yeah. Suppose it's hard to bubble wrap everything without cultural support for the change, but it seems far easier to drink than eat calories.
Sitting at a restaurant with an open soda refill fountain, it's not uncommon to see people (and especially teens/children) refill their big cup 2-3 times before the meal is over -- and then also take one for the road.
A can of pepsi is about 150c and 41g of added sugar at 12oz, so people are casually drinking 900-1200c and 246-328g added sugar in one meal -- it's crazy.
The WHO suggests people stay under 25g added sugar A DAY because it tends to make liver fat and insulin resistance, so it seems no wonder why metabolic and cardiovascular disease are rampant, now, even in children.
TrixieBastard@reddit
I think a part of my undying love for LJS is the fact that it was a favorite of my paternal grandparents'. Whenever I would stay with them for a weekend, we'd either get the square fish sandwiches at Hardee's or we'd go to LJS for dinner the first night. I don't believe they were Catholic, but they really went all in on the Fish Fridays anyway, lol
While I do still enjoy the food (especially the hushpuppies, and the batter crumblies with malt vinegar), there's a lot of nostalgia at play, too

always gotta ask for extra crispies. sometimes as a teen we'd just drive thru for a free water and some crispies.
C_Lineatus@reddit
I believe they called them crumbs when I worked there in the 90s, my mom called them crunchies.
You start the day off with some batter through a colander to make a batch that went into the food window. They were intentionally added to every order. You could even order a side of them, no charge. We had some kids that would come get a water and crumbs several times a week during summer..
ladybug1215@reddit
I loved getting the crunchies as a little kid! I accidentally spilled an entire container of them in the backseat of the car, and no amount of work with the Dustbuster could get them all. That car still smelled like Long John Silver’s on hot days when it finally died 5 years later.
miasysinthelou@reddit
They were called drums and were so incredibly unhealthy but were the cure for constipation.

They had this shrimp wrap in the late 90s/early aughts that was out of this fckin world, I still daydream about it lol. Ljs hasn't made it up to me yet!😞🍤

Bonanza Steak House. Swamp water fountain soda was the best. Old school Pizza Hut with the lunch buffet and stained glass lamps over red booths. Heaven

Cannot tell you anything about their food, but always remember the gator cups.
trainwreckhappening@reddit
Weirdly the strongest memory I have of the food is a vivid image from when my brother threw up in the car (with a fever) after eating there on a long car trip.
And a memory of extended family discussing artificial sweeteners over diet coke while sitting in the half-dome glass room.

There’s one lone Skippers left, in Silverdale, WA, and it’s like a legit restaurant inside with tvs and beer on tap but you still order like it’s a fast food restaurant, and it’s the same menu (kind of like the Taco Time in Clarkston, or Lewiston I can’t remember, it’s all one and the same).

I moved away from Mr. Gatti's country over twenty years ago. My husband says there's a new one in his hometown and it's inside the Walmart. I've yet to try it but everything EXCEPT the buffet is still good.
Nothing against the buffet. It sustained us during undergrad with coupons for the $5 lunch buffet.
Log_in_Password@reddit
I remember many birthdays and trips to Mr gattis when they were around here. A new one opened up somewhat recently inside a walmart but without a game room and unlimted spaghetti its not the same.
Head-Reindeer-4082@reddit
Loved Long John Silvers then and now. Chicken planks are awesome! And the crumblies. Every time I make the road trip from Annapolis to my childhood home in Paducah, LJS is in heavy rotation. The one in Charleston, WV is just about halfway between Annapolis and Paducah and is my go to lunch spot. Fun fact: the original Long John Silvers location in Lexington KY was a short drive from the graduate student apartments where I lived during medical school. LJS was a nice (and starving medical student budget friendly) meal out.
Hot_Frosty0807@reddit
I don't know if they ever really took off anywhere, but we had a sandwich place called Schlotzky's Deli that made New York deli style sandwiches on this grilled focaccia bread that was crispy, and moist, and chewy all at once. I used to get their club sandwich on jalapeno cheddar focaccia and it was to die for. I haven't had it since 1995 and I can still remember it exactly as it was.
jtmann05@reddit (OP)
They expanded quite a lot for a while, but ended up closing a lot of locations. They still have some, though. I believe the HQ is in Austin, TX. I used to run in a charity 5K that was sponsored by them.

Still think about those weird fluffy eggs on the Ponderosa salad bar.
And the fake greasy whipped cream for the ice cream. A1 on a baked potato.
MixerMan67@reddit
My friends and I found out that all-you-can-eat sirloin tips was not, in fact, all you can eat. We were asked to leave after about 2 hours.
WiscoPhil@reddit
Here was my go-to Pondo hack: The chop steak entree was only like $0.35 more than the Grand Buffet. So I'd order that with a baked potato. I'd fill up on the buffet (because duh), and take the entree home for another meal.
howieinchicago@reddit
lol, I called it ‘Pondo’ too. We had one in my college town and a bunch of us would fast for half the day and absolutely destroy that buffet.
jtmann05@reddit (OP)
I loved the chicken wings so much. I remember people just hovering and waiting for a fresh batch
JayRay_44@reddit
Fr tho. Ponderosa’s wings were incredible. I credit this place for being where I developed a love for steak. And nowadays I’m still a sucker for a good ribeye or NY strip.
StaceyPfan@reddit
It was frozen Sysco steak.
JayRay_44@reddit
Yeah I could have guessed it was shitty quality but when you are 9-10 years old and ordering steak for the first time, it feels like gourmet dining. 😂😂😂
Sofagirrl79@reddit

Those weird fluffy eggs are powdered eggs. You can make them anytime you want if you just buy some powdered eggs!
StaceyPfan@reddit
I worked on the buffet at Ponderosa. They didn't come powdered. They were fresh from a bucket.
KiriStarr@reddit
I legitimately have a soft spot for powdered eggs that you find on say the Hilton Garden Inn breakfast bar. There's something comforting about them. So I decided to buy powdered eggs and make them at home for fun, and they did NOT turn out well. Maybe I should give it another go, but I think I'll just leave it to the cheap hotels. They know what they're doing.
StaceyPfan@reddit
I worked for Ponderosa for a year. I loved the weird eggs too.

Growing up as kid I loved El Pollo Loco. One of the youth soccer league teams I was on was sponsored by them, and we would go there sometimes as a team, it was fun for some reason. Maybe just the idea of going there as a team. But the funny part is that it was years & years later that I learned it was a chain restaurant, I always thought it was a local place since I live in a little Arizona town on the border of Mexico & California. 🫠

ananthropolothology@reddit
Chi-Chi's was absolutely a birthday destination restaurant for my family
NerdyTeacher77@reddit
I’m still upset that we don’t have a “fine dining” Mexican option in the States. NOT that Chi-Chi’s or COK was three star Michelin, but it was nice to have a “fancy” place to grab some salsa and a taco. Can anyone else think of one that’s still around? (granted, we’ve now found some amazing local restaurants as a result)

LJS was a treat. It was fun to go because it was decked out to look like a boat inside. The booths and floor were wood planks, there was rope and nets on the walls. Not any specific restaurant, but I miss the western-style all-you-can-eat Chinese buffets, with Chow Mein, Lo Mein, popcorn shrimp, beef & broccoli, sweet & sour chicken...
Now every place is fucking authentic. Fat greasy noodles, brined fish heads, fish balls, rice broth. I mean, I guess it's great if you're from China, but I'm not. I like my Chinese food deep-fried.

In the Midwest there was this place called Ground Round that played old Betty Boop cartoons on a big projector screen and served hot fudge sundaes in little baseball cap dishes that you could take home. It was a kid's dream. I'm sure my parents only took us there because kids ate free. But it was the best. Furr’s cafeteria, my family used to go to this when I was little in the 80s and early 90s. Some of my favorite memories with my grand parents was getting Mac cheese and pie. Someone would always give me quarter for coins vending machine with cheap plastic toys.

Sidenote: The lead singer of The Flaming Lips (Wayne Coyne) worked as a fry cook at Long John Silvers for 11 years. The first three albums were recorded while he was working there.
ammodramussavannarum@reddit
I put my son to sleep every single night listening to Flaming Lips. We’ve been listening to American Head for the past year or so. I have to clear my throat a few times so he doesn’t ask me what LSD is or why James doesn’t give a fuck anymore, or maybe several other drug references, but it’s such a good album. He usually is asleep by thee time Brother Eye comes on, but I’ll sit in the dark and listen to that song swirl through his room and watch the stars projected on his ceiling slowly circle around the room. So good.
cityshepherd@reddit
The Flaming Lips are hands down the coolest/best thing to ever come out of Oklahoma. Although that’s just my admittedly biased opinion.

Finding out they’re from Oklahoma and also responsible for Ocean Man is hilarious
SporesM0ldsandFungus@reddit
They put on such a damn fun show. Saw them near 2 decades ago at Austin City Limits Music Festival. It had been a pretty mellow afternoon, some good acts but then The Flaming Lips take the stage and blew the doors off. Great time with everyone singing along to 'Yoshima Battles the Pink Robots' and 'She Don't Use Jelly'
cityshepherd@reddit
Saw them at the free concert in Philly like 20 years ago (I THINK it was in Philly), and it was one of the most infectiously positive energies I’ve ever experienced at a concert. I’d already been a fan thanks to a profound experience I had with mushrooms while listening to the whole Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots album (and some of their earlier stuff too).
One of my dear friends got to be one of the people dressed as Santa on the stage. 10/10 experience absolutely fucking awesome.
poop-money@reddit
I still have a dream of taking some mushrooms, getting 4 stereos in the same room, loading up Zaireeka on them, and just sitting in the center of the room.

Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips. My mom would take me sometimes and I'd love to get the chicken and chips. I'd never eat the hush puppies and give them to my mom. She'd always get the fish. As I grew older I ate the fries and the hush puppies somtimes. But the chicken was always my favorite. Extra pieces of fish and chicken were like .89 cents and .69 cents respectively. By the last few times i went it was closer to $1.79 and $1.49 for extra pieces of fish and chicken. But still I when I first went the meals went for like $6 ish to $8 ish dollars?

Luby’s buffet. It was cafeteria style where you go down the line with your tray sliding across the metal bars.

I have slight nostalgia for LJS, but the amount I have for Captain D's greatly eclipses it. We lived right by one growing up so I went there more, but a new location came around where I live now in 2020 & I'm pretty much a regular there. I am a huge foodie BTW, but Captain D's is 1 of 3 fast food/chains I really ever go to. The other 2 are Pizza Hut & Arby's, and all 3 stem from my deep rooted 80s/90s nostalgia that will never go away
Gotta say too, it's a shame LJS decided to scrap their nautical themed designs from back in the day. It truly made the feel special, now there's nothing to make them stand out aesthetically

I am 52 years old and have had a Long John Silver in every city I've every lived in. I have never, I repeat, I HAVE NEVER had a meal dine in or take home where everything was perfectly cooked. Quincy’s buffet had buildings that are still supremely recognizable though the chain is long gone. I was one of 3 kids and my dad really got into a “thing” of going to our nearby one. They were famous for their “yeast rolls,” which were buttery and had a distinctive flavor that may or may not have been actual yeast.
The other place I loved as a little kid and teen was Morrison’s Cafeteria, which originated in Mobile, AL (my dad hated that city so we went to the one in the mall in nearby Pensacola, FL instead). It felt fancy while not really being. It was where I learned I don’t like liver & onions, but my dad does. Morrison’s was either merged with, renamed to, or bought by Piccadilly… I don’t know which… and then pretty much disappeared entirely. I’m told there is still one Morrison’s left somewhere in the region, but I’ve not been to it. I’m much more of a foodie now.

Ponderosa. They had a Barbie cheese at the end of the all you can eat area. Mom was like “get some veggies” so you come back with a bowl of broccoli covered in cheese. It was glorious.
noonesaidityet@reddit
After the majority of LJS closed, the closest one to our town was about 2 hours away. My aunt and uncle would drive there once a month to eat, and I would make fun of him for driving that far for food. I thought it was stupid and a waste of time.
Oh, how young and stupid I was, because if the one existing Diamond Dave's near me moved 2 hours away, I would be driving at least once a month just to get a cup of their sauce.
But, my answer to the post would be Bonanza. Just a run of the mill buffet place, but you could order steak or shrimp. They had the best imitation cheese block sitting in the middle of it all that you could shred or slice. I haven't tasted anything like it for over 30 years. Who knew I'd long for imitation cheese, but it was so good. The self-serve ice cream bar was amazing. And, the nostalgia part where we'd usually go there on a Friday night before grocery shopping when I was a kid, so I had the whole weekend ahead of me.

Shakey’s Pizza. From after baseball/soccer games, to Friday night movie rentals, I always loved Shakey’s when I was kid.

You will never convince me that the LJS in town isn’t a money laundering operation.
But to answer your question: the original Grandy’s was amazeballs
billskionce@reddit
LJS batter is a delicacy by itself without any fish or chicken wrapped around it.

Roy Rodgers. They are making a small comeback, but mostly gone.

LJS was a staple growing up. Their chicken actually good and I miss the hush puppies. Arby’s when they had the 5 for $5. Little Caesars is still my favorite pizza place. Kettle is like the first restaurant I remember going too.

Barnicle Bill's for us in Australia 😂
jazzbot247@reddit
There was actually a sit down restaurant in NJ by the beach called Long John's they served prime rib and seafood, but as kids we loved going there for the hot fresh baked popovers. It was kind of far from where we lived so it was a treat to go there.
iGingerBeard@reddit
The best chicken tender o ever had came from Long John Silver’s.
Background-Bend2877@reddit
I’d ask for the “crumbs” too.
Boring_Blood4603@reddit
LJS was always a favorite. None near me now, the last one closed two years ago.
Chi-Chis was a favorite too. Those are all gone too.
Jedi_Mind_Chick@reddit
Also mine. I miss it, like a lot.
coaxialology@reddit
Chi-Chi's. Just the smell of the place made me so happy, especially because we rarely went out to eat. And I always appreciated that they gave us Andes mints with rhe check, because those were basically a delicacy.

Oh my god! Long John Silver’s was ABSOLUTELY my favorite—it was MY birthday restaurant pick for years! 10 piece shrimp, fries, hush puppy, and a Mt. Dew with crushed ice. 👨🍳💋🤌 There isn’t one anywhere near where I live now unfortunately
mrnoonan81@reddit
Anywhere that smelled like cigarettes. It still doesn't feel like eating out without that tang in the air.
SilverAsparagus2985@reddit
It wasn’t weird but when we actually could eat out, I enjoyed that little cheeseburger from McDonald’s.
AccountOfMyDarkside@reddit
This is totally not a weird favorite. I would eat this shit every single day of the week if I could. I have celiac, so I can't eat anything breaded or battered. Please go eat some of this for me. I'd like to live vicariously through you.
DeluxeGravyPit@reddit
One time a friend of mine said of Long Josh Silvers, "I love that the soda is the heathiest thing here".

Long John Silver’s still goes. Don’t sleep on their tenders either.
jtmann05@reddit (OP)
My favorite tenders in the game. People make fun of me for saying that, but probably because they’ve never had them
elektrik_noise@reddit
My town had a Long John Silver's that was combined with an A&W and it was my fav spot in town. I'd split a hot dog and fries with my friend and we'd each get rootbeer floats where we could refill the rootbeer for free from the tap.
rdhdboi767@reddit
A&W used to be so good

I picked Sizzler for every birthday just so I could gorge myself on the buffet.

The TGIFridays by me had a three story phone booth that I was obsessed with, I always wanted to go there but my parents hated it and I don’t think I actually liked the food? But that phone booth!!

In the early ‘80s, my neighborhood LJS looked like the inside of a “real” pirate ship. We were proper country, then.

Long John's was the best in the 90s, or at least I thought so. I went to Arby's a lot back then, but avoid it like the plague now.
HicJacetMelilla@reddit
One time I ate way too many of those LJS crunchies that would be in the bottom of the container, and threw up. I then went around telling everyone I hated fish for like 15 years. But it wasn’t even fish, it was probably chicken. When I rediscovered LJS in college I really liked their fish and chicken haha.
