My engine started shaking violently for 3 minutes on the highway, then the check engine light went off and it ran perfectly. Did I dodge a bullet or is my car on borrowed time?

You have a carburetor?
ThirdSunRising@reddit
Pull codes. I bet you had a temporary misfire which would call for an inspection of the relevant wiring
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Yes I had it checked today she you were right
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
I checked it today and it was water residue in the cabrator
jeepsies@reddit
Im guessing coil
Medium-Oil8577@reddit
Sounds like a water pocket in the fuel tank went through the pump.
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Probably I think, in the morning I’d go to the mechanic workshop
Medium-Oil8577@reddit
Follow up. Engine problems are almost never intermittent. If its coming and going its an outside problem
Substantial_Team6751@reddit
Check your fluids and check the CEL code.
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
As for the fluid I can check , but what’s the CEL code
Substantial_Team6751@reddit
If you got a check engine light, a code was recorded. You can have a mechanic pull the code or buy a $20-30 device and DIY it.
BombZoneGuy@reddit
"do it yourself it"?
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Alright thank you I’d have tha done in the morning
NuclearHateLizard@reddit
You certainly got lucky but as many have said you really just gotta get it checked out. Pay attention to what they tell you and just try and learn what you can from this experience if you're new to cars. Look for a shop with good reviews and people sharing positive experiences and they should take care of you
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Okay thank you I intend to do that so as not to embarrass myself later
NuclearHateLizard@reddit
Best you can do! Good luck and fingers crossed that it's nonserious
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Thank you so much
Vitriolic_III@reddit
Did you hit 88 miles per hour? What year do you think it is?
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
2015 carry
OkCartographer175@reddit
there's no way to know until you get it diagnosed
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
I’d have no other option but to do that
Triple-Depresso@reddit
My Jetta had similar issue, drive for 10-15min, rumble kicks in, if I shut the engine off and turn it off again it runs fine for another 10-15m
It was a misfire issue, rumble is caused by unbalanced engine movements
What caused it was the coil pack, coil packs generate the high voltage the spark plugs need, so not enough voltage means cylinder no fire, no fire means unbalance etc etc
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Oooh thank you, I’m not too vast on cars to have known that but I know now
ajaxburger@reddit
It’s absolutely worth investigating. The code may be stored so you should scan the codes
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
I really am a novice to this type of issues, I really don’t know where the sides are
ajaxburger@reddit
Head to your local Autozone (assuming you’re in the US) or a similar store they should scan your car for free so you can find out what’s wrong and take it to a shop.
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Yes I’d do that, I need that for real so I don’t get embarrassed eventually
precocious_necrosis@reddit
That sounds like an intermittent cylinder misfire. Could have been caused by bad fuel or something like a loose electrical connection.
It will most likely return, so getting it checked out is a good idea.
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
Right! I need to do that asap because I just got lucky my car restarted
NotMuch2@reddit
Impossible to say with the lack of information provided. Take it to a mechanic
Mental-Philosophy3@reddit (OP)
For real I would say I need to do that because I really dodged a bullet
