What favourite bands/artists from our teens and 20s are still putting out good music?
Posted by toasterb@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 352 comments
It seems that many of my favourite bands from that era have either broken up or are putting out new music that's pretty lacklustre. So I still listen to them, but it tends to be only a handful of albums out of a pretty long catalogue.
For example, I still count Weezer to be one of my favourite bands, but despite them having 15 (!!!) studio albums, I only really like the Blue Album and Pinkerton.
Off the top of my head, the only two artists from my youth that I look forward to new releases from are Metric and The Chemical Brothers.
I'm sure there are other groups from back in the day who are still putting out good music that I'm unaware of. Who do you still listen to the new music from?

Luzon79@reddit
Same. Their last album was a masterpiece and they are still playing live. Looking forward to their next album in early retirement š¤£
HipHopGrandpa@reddit
Is Fear Innoculum their newest? I thought that was a dud. No hooks, no choruses, just rehashed jam band shit. Maynard even said they wrote that album with them all living in different places. Itās a pieced together edit album. Just didnāt have cohesion. Listened to it a few times and limped away sadly.
MartialBob@reddit
I think one of the biggest differences with their newest album is that they are focusing less on Maynard and more on the rest of the band. I had the opportunity to see them live. And I didn't realize how much Maynard isn't in the new album.
Luzon79@reddit
Yeah I get that. I did feel the same way when it was released but it has grown a lot on me and the songs sound amazing live!
But I understand the critism.
Gor-Gor_Returns@reddit
I was looking for this. Last album was great. Unfortunately also pre-covid.
gbyrd013@reddit
Pearl Jam, 311, Goo Goo Dolls, Collective Soul
HipHopGrandpa@reddit
Collective Soul concerts are special.
HoudinisBox@reddit
Better Than Ezra. I'm definitely biased because they are my favorite band, but their new music is still fuckin' great.
HipHopGrandpa@reddit
They put on a great live show too.
sh0ckwavevr6@reddit
Tool still pretty impressive
NW_Forester@reddit
I'm looking forward to their next release which will be probably what, 2034?
Content-Seaweed-6395@reddit
yeah an album every 10-20 years is not exactly consistent even if they are good. That being said I really couldn't get that into 10,000 days. It isn't "bad" but to me it also isn't "great" it is just a tool album
the_ballmer_peak@reddit
They've released an album since that one. I thought 10,000 days had some great tracks. Fear Innoculum just sounds like a rehash of a Tool song I've heard before.
Content-Seaweed-6395@reddit
Yeah exactly, that is what 10,000 days felt like too, nota bad thing but it just makes me want to go back and listen to the songs that sound like they inspired the new ones. They have a very distinct sound and way of playing so it is hard to get too outside of that box. I think that is probably why Maynard has so many other projects. I love them still though
the_ballmer_peak@reddit
I totally disagree on 10,000 days. There are a bunch of of standout tracks.
Vicarious, The Pot, Right in Two, and 10,000 days are all great, unique works.
I'd throw in Jambi and Rosetta Stoned as second tier but also good. The rest are a little forgettable, but that's still more than half the album.
Content-Seaweed-6395@reddit
it has been a few years since I listened to it, I need to go back and give it a another chance. Albums tend to grow on me over years of not getting it when it first came out.
HipHopGrandpa@reddit
Youāre forgiven for not being hooked by their last album. It had zero hooks. Iām okay if they stop making albums, if that Pro Tools Frankenstein songwriting is the best they can do.
CarolinaHeinz@reddit
Rumor they are having a run at Sphere. Itās perfect for Tool. Iāll be there if they do.

Ocean to Ocean was spectacular!
I havenāt been blown away by the two tracks Iāve heard for the up coming album, though.
Content-Seaweed-6395@reddit
I will always love her, but starting on the The Beekeper IDk something felt different. I think maybe she got all her angst out on everything up until Scarlets walk is untouchable. I have listened to everything since then and just not been able to get it. I think it also has to do with where you are when you hear certain things and I needed those early albums a lot more than her later ones, if that makes sense ha. I need to go back and give them all a listen including Oceans, admittedly I don't even remember listening to Oceans but I know I did. Sometimes albums grow on me years and years later and I would love her to be one of those. Would be actually pretty nice right now, life is kind of weird these days I think for everyone!
Stop_Already@reddit
Oh that album was totally meh. I 100% agree with you there. I kinda forget about it, it was so bad. Ahahahaha.
Content-Seaweed-6395@reddit

Mike Patton has been consistently rocking in his own way for over 30 years now and I think he's got at least another 20 years in him.
proportional-porcini@reddit
If I could pick out a super group frontman Mike would be it!
NW_Forester@reddit
I think this could work in very specific instances, like release an album where every song is a different genre yet still cohesive.
Vocals - Mike Patton
Guitar - Omar Rodriguez-Lopez
Bass - Thundercat
Drums - Questlove
Producer / keyboard - Trent Reznor
Guest starring: Bjork and Jacob Collier on different tracks. And if we get a time machine, Prince as well.
proportional-porcini@reddit
Maybe throw Danny Carey in there as drummer. Id love to see what Patton does with off time signatures.
MrsDonaldDraper@reddit
This is what I came to say. Mike Patton is hands down my favorite musician and Iām in support of everything he doesā¦.thatās not to say I wouldnāt love another FNM album/tour. His latest album with the Avett Brothers is fantastic. His voice is still incredible.

The Gorillaz's new song "The Happy Dictator" seems to have introduced a bunch of people to Sparks, which pleases me immensely. They've been putting out bangers since the 70s and aren't stopping, even though they're in their late 70s/early 80s! Saw them last year and it was such a fun concert!

Well, they were on the soundtrack with the iconic Born Slippy that played over the end of the film.
There were lots of incredible tracks on that soundtrack, and it really broadened my exposure to electronic music outside of the mainstream stuff we got in the US. I did a deep dive on Underworld and Bedrock in college.
Damn, I wish we still had soundtracks like that, the Crow, Batman Forever, etc.
ScientistAsHero@reddit
Yeah I guess I misspoke - Iggy Pop and a bunch of other artists were on that too. I just remember seeing the movie in 96 and got interested in Underworld. Been a lifelong fan ever since.

Mother Mother started up in my late 20s and I got right into their music, and they still release good music too. They had album come out last year, iirc, and it's got lots of good songs.
I agree about Weezer though, their newer music is pretty flat. I didn't care for anything after the Green Album.
GrizzlyAdam12@reddit
Pixies and Weezerā¦.but, not nearly as good as the old stuff.

Jack Black. A few Hop Hop artists but they're usually touring in Europe where they're loved even more.

Foo Fighters. Their previous album was really good. It was made in response to Taylor Hawkins and Dave Grohlās mom both passing away about a year apart from each other, so itās pretty raw and emotional. They dropped it without warning, when there was a lot of speculation about the future of the band and didnāt do any promotion or touring for it. They have a new album coming out in 2 days.

The new Smashing Pumpkins album is their best⦠and I bought Gish on cassette back in the day.

toasterb@reddit (OP)
I certainly didn't mean it to be. I got a few electronic music tips, but I'd love to hear more from other genres.
I feel like a lot of my hip hop interests have disbanded/gone inactive (Outkast, Digable Planets, Pharcyde) or had a member pass away (Tribe). Would love to find which other favourites from back in the day are still making good music.
MrNinoBrown1906@reddit
The longevity of those genres are fine. Its just the demographic of thos sub as you put only thinks about one genre. I can go in others and old school hip hop abd RnB are discussed.
WampaWon@reddit
I really like pearl jam's newer music as much as their older music. It's evolved with them as they get older. It's not just the band trying to do the same thing over and over. I find myself relating to several songs an album as I age with them

Foo Fighters are still doing their thing. I don't think anyone would have faulted them if they'd kicked back, rested on their laurels, and lived off their Everlong / Best Of You / Times Like These greatest hits collection, especially after losing Taylor a couple years ago, but they're still at it. New album is coming out this Friday and from the leadoff singles, sounds like there's an old school punk vibe going on. Bit of a departure from their stadium rock but I'm excited for it!
toasterb@reddit (OP)
Hmm, I've long lumped them in the category of old bands that are still active but not putting out music that I like.
I'll give the album a listen, they could definitely use a bit more edge in recent years.
