9800X3D or 9850X3D – is the extra heat worth it long term?

Hi guys,
I’m trying to decide between the 9800X3D and the 9850X3D. The price difference for me is basically nothing (around 20€), so that’s not really a factor.
I’m already aware of the general differences — from what I understand, the 9850X3D is basically just a higher clocked / factory overclocked version of the 9800X3D.
But here’s my concern — call me paranoid if you want 😅 — how would that affect long-term lifespan? From what I’ve seen, the 9850X3D tends to run about 7–10°C hotter. Considering how expensive components are, I’d like to delay upgrading for as long as possible.
I’m not too worried about the extra \~20W power draw.
Performance-wise, I’ve seen it’s only about a 3–5% gain. So my question is: is it actually worth it, considering the potentially higher temps and maybe shorter lifespan — or is that not really a realistic concern?
I’m open to any advice or recommendations.
I mostly play games like WoW and CS, but who knows, I might end up playing other games in the future as well.
Thanks in advance!

It's not a realistic concern. Use a good dual tower air cooler like the Thermalright Phantom Spirit and the CPU will be obsolete from a performance perspective well before it dies due to heat.
ego100trique@reddit
And you can still undervolt it if temps is really that much of an issue
hunterczech@reddit
I've had Intel CPU for 15 years it was pushing 90C most of the time and it still lived even after I replaced it later for Ryzen
lordhooha@reddit
Good cooling and you’re fine.
I’m thinking of redoing my custom loop to have my radiator in front of the blower on my game rooms mini split it’s already a bit over sized to keep my sever rack cool. The temps coming out right at the blower is -30 to -64 degrees last I checked. The loop includes my 5090 and amd 9950x3d

From reading online.
The 9850 produces more heat, uses more energy, and costs more for little to negative performance over the 9800x3d
If it's even $40 cheaper get the 9800x3d
PsychologicalGlass47@reddit
Heat does nothing whatsoever to lifespan, cycles are what matter.
SAHD292929@reddit
The main question here is if your cpu cooler is enough to handle it to maximise its potential.
IANVS@reddit
In short, i's not worth it.

Have AMD released a bios update yet to fix the 9000 X3D CPUs randomly frying? Saw a guy yesterday post about his CPU frying on an MSI X870 board and there’s been many other posts for them randomly dying on Asus and ASRock boards. A lot of them from people saying “It was running fine for a year”.
NotSlimShadyy@reddit
The board manufacturers do that. Plus the amount that burned out is such a miniscule amount anyways
bestanonever@reddit
For me, it wouldn't be worth it. That extra heat goes straight to your room and heat up the space you are using when you play. Also, it might make your CPU cooler slightly louder to keep up.
The performance difference won't save you when both become obsolete, it's basically the same thing.
In terms of lifespan, it should work just as long, or else AMD wouldn't have released this model. But more heat, noise and a performance difference that needs to be benchmarked to be felt, it's not really worth your time.
The-True-Auditor@reddit
I have honestly never experienced a computer actually heating up a room
AwayReplacement7063@reddit
Especially when a system gets obsolete it’ll start working harder to push that extra heat out. I’ve only had it happen with older systems but it definitely happens.
bestanonever@reddit
Either you are lucky, on a cold area or never had the cheaper side of GPUS I had, lol.
InvaderJ@reddit
Two builds in progress across air and AIO, 9800X3D and a 9850X3D. Legit there is minimal difference if you have your coolers and curves dialed in.
RatKingRonni@reddit
I game with the 9850x3D and I like it, can’t speak for the 9800x3D though
However in a couple different reviews the 9859x3d has been said to be the best gaming cpu right now
Celcius_87@reddit
OP don't leave us hanging, which did you pick? :)
Cradenz@reddit
Just get the newest/9850x3d if you already do not have a 9800x3d
Temperature is a non issue. It will boost itself depending on workload/ current/ temp (95c)
mshab356@reddit
There’s a new 9850x3d??
Nosferatu_V@reddit
How long have you been out of the loop? It launched back in January
According_Spare7788@reddit
Honestly, i would rather keep my 9800x3d and upgrade to zen 6 x3d (or zen 7 if thats on am5). One of the highlights for me with my 9800x3d is how incredibly cool the chip runs under gaming workloads, like literally 50-58C generally, even in CPU intensive games with a RTX 5080.
itchygentleman@reddit
120w TDP isnt a whole lot. We're just used to relatively low power these days.
TechnoGMNG589@reddit
People dont buy the 9850x3d for anything other than having the bragging rights of having the best gaming cpu.
So if you want it, get it.
donut4ever21@reddit
Cool the shit out of it and you'll be fine
BuyCompetitive9001@reddit
Keep in mind it’s still load based. I have a 9800x3d and it rarely gets above 60 during normal gameplay.
I don’t know that I’m real world scenarios you’ll see much benefit, or extra heat, unless you manage to actually get those extra watts going through it, which I think is rare while gaming.
NotSlimShadyy@reddit
I have a 9800x3d. Have it set to like negative 20 or 25 on the voltage. Hovers in the 50-85 watts while gaming. You're not going to pull much more in most scenarios with the 9850. Full power on something like cinebemch which is t a normal use case for anyone, I max at upper 120 watts
Celcius_87@reddit
Which way are you leaning OP?
I got my 9800X3D at launch and I like it because they basically perform the same but this one runs cooler (less fan noise) and uses less power (I run my PC on a UPS so I less wattage = more runtime before the battery goes dead in an emergency).
If I were buying one today though I would go for the 9850X3D just because it's the latest.
I think you'll be fine either way though.
ThunderKats351@reddit
Is a more refine chip, you can undervolt it and match the previews 9800x3D clock speed and is a win win.
Niwrats@reddit
technically speaking nobody knows about the lifespan as nobody has used these chips for a decade or two. personally for me i would go with the 9800X3D as it is more efficient, mainly because i like a low noise setup. in your case i don't expect you to regret either choice much, as it is basically just an overclocked variant. you are buying the same physical structure anyway.
maiiko616@reddit
use cases. 9800 gaming only. 9850 gaming and tabs/ apps open in the background/ a lot of stuff open at the same time. heat shouldn’t exactly be a consideration unless you’re case can’t fit a larger aio or air cooler.
aragorn18@reddit
Are you confusing the 9850X3D with the 9950X3D? The 9850X3D isn't any better for having more applications open in the background.
maiiko616@reddit
lol yes i am.
Responsible-Bid5015@reddit
7800x3d?
Australasian25@reddit
Don't worry about AMD gaming cpus heat. They're relatively cool compared to intel.
Phantom spirit 120 and undervolt all cores by -30mv to start with.
Look up some undervolting guides. It's completely safe.
If -30mv crashes, go to -25, then -20 etc etc. It'll save you 5-10 degree celsius.
Happy gaming and don't worry about this too much.
