here's what the buyer said
generalspades@reddit
This is a similar mentality to my Pokemon card collection. I collect them because I think they look cool, not to make money.
mantenner@reddit
Gives "The wolf does not concern itself with the opinions of sheep" vibes
runs_okay@reddit
If the wolf truly doesn't care then why did he write all of that? Even though I can't blame him in any way, this sounds extremely defensive.
Andreaspetersen12@reddit
Probably got interviewed and just answered the questions
runs_okay@reddit
I mean you can always turn it down lol

Collects cars but doesn't drive them
zhiryst@reddit
watch him just be building a replica of Paul Walkers car collection... but in black! so edgy.
pleasedonotredeem@reddit
People who buy cars to not drive them are losers.
A car can be sculpture, it can be art, but part of that art is that it moves. If it doesn't move or can't move, it loses a dimension.
If you buy a car to not drive it, you might as well buy a sculpture and then lock it away out of sight and just look at a photo of it. Or watch a live concert from a sound proof booth.
You don't need to track it, or drive it in the rain, or get it muddy, but if you don't drive it you aren't a car enthusiast, you are a status enthusiast.
RunnerLuke357@reddit
This, anyone that buys anything for the sole purpose of ownership and nothing else needs to reevaluate their life choices. Do you have to drive the car every day? No, but if you have so many cars that you cannot drive them all in a week's time, then you need to get rid of some.
Patient_Bet4635@reddit
Idk why someone like this wouldn't just buy the styling designs from factory, if its an art piece, those have more history, are more unique and they can be had at a relative discount
pleasedonotredeem@reddit
I suspect a big part of the appeal for a guy like that is owning something that OTHER people want and now can't have.
AndroidMyAndroid@reddit
You have to hire people to move those into your storage bunker, it's much easier to just drive a car into your underground garage.
Patient_Bet4635@reddit
fair
FeelTall@reddit
Idk, you're giving off some pretty loud "I'm a better enthusiast than you are so if you don't enjoy your hobby in the way I do, you're a loser" which sounds like you're chasing some super high status of being the best and right car enthusiant.
Lol get over yourself bud and let people live.

Shallow_wanderer@reddit
It's all just money laundering for the wealthy at this point stfg
Bonerchill@reddit
i’m going to say this as quietly as possible
HOW DOES ONE LAUNDER MONEY ON A PUBLIC AUCTION SITE?
BakedSteak@reddit
Thing 1 owes Thing 2 for a previous illicit transaction. Instead of selling this car for what it’s actually worth, Thing 2 sells Thing 1 this car for ~$150k more than it’s worth. They are settled and the money is laundered
Bonerchill@reddit
Yes, and the best way to do this is online and publicly, with record of both parties.
keni804@reddit
Its extremely simple, instead of handing over cash on an illegal transaction and having to explain to the IRS how you mysteriously acquired $200k you sell your 15 year old car for $200k and the IRS cant ask questions because it was done on a public auction site.
Bonerchill@reddit
Interesting worldview.

I would not be surprised at all if it is 😂

Money laundering
GoldenState15@reddit
Another one who has no idea what money laundering is
idkbruh653@reddit
I know exactly what money laundering is. I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t. And it’s been long rumored that BaT is a place where it happens. Because so many vehicles have sold over the years for big money for prices that don’t make sense. Just say you agree with the price this thing sold at and be done with it.
Naroef@reddit
Same thing with art.
GoldenState15@reddit
Dude blocked me cause he didn't know LMAO
UrbanRelays@reddit
You hit 1000 miles and it’ll be worth less than half.
Seriously how is this a good investment?
IWantToPlayGame@reddit
It's a toy. People at this level buy toys. This is not an investment.
Andreaspetersen12@reddit
I don't think this is bought as a toy, more like a shiny rock
Seymour_Tamzarian@reddit
Because it’s not an investment, it’s bragging rights at cars and coffee, or the missing piece of one’s emotional/nostalgic collection.
Either way it’s but a fraction of their net worth and not something they will ever loose sleep over.
_BEER_@reddit
You'd have to literally bring it on a trailer to cars n coffee because the moment you'll try to drive this dry rotted pos it'll rapidly deconstruct on you. Its a museum piece now.
literahcola@reddit
The whole "every piece of rubber will be dry rotted" trope is so irritating. That might apply to cars that are left outside in the desert for 30 years, but it's not nearly as common as you guys make it out to be.
LegoGuy23@reddit
For sure; everybody always says this, but I question it. While seals do degrade, I've always driven 15-20 year old cars. And while the bushings have worn down somewhat, they're still very much usable and nowhere as completely destroyed as these comments make it out to be.
So long as the owner regularly changes the oil and starts up the engine every once in a while, I don't see why cars like that should be any different.
literahcola@reddit
Yeah I've driven lots of old junk, one car sitting for 25 years, and didn't have these catastrophic rubber failures everyone talks about.
Lauzz91@reddit
years of those seals sitting in contact with oil will absolutely rot them out, whether or not the air is humidity controlled and the engine bay hasn't undergone heat cycles
9e78@reddit
Nobody is buying this to drive it.
j1592@reddit
I’m sure neither the buyer or seller are hurting for money.
qwertyisdead@reddit
Where are all the, “it’s not worth that much” people?
SnikySquirrel@reddit
It’s not worth that much.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
725 miles, it's basically brand new.
Think about it in a few years, what's a factory original nearly brand new e46 going for now? A CSL with a bit under 3k miles went for 350k not that long ago, low mileage very clean examples are starting to go for near six figures.
Is an E90 worth 200k? No. Is a top trim limited quantity E90 with under a thousand miles on it worth that? Probably. This ain't gonna be a driven car, it's gonna be a museum piece.
Krispythecat@reddit
Nah, this is pure speculation based on what prior M3s have done. Someone is hoping E90 will follow the same appreciation curve of its bigger brothers
I don't doubt that E90s will increase in value, but they don't have that special je ne sais quoi that the E30/36/46 all had.
YozaSkywalker@reddit
Huh? It was the last car BMW made that felt connected to the road and it's the only M3 with a V8. This dude might not make money on it but they are very unique and capable cars
TurboFucked@reddit
The S65 is that what to some people.
It's the only M3 to ever have received a V8, it's the last of the high-revving M3s, and it's a generally fabulous car.
SaintTastyTaint@reddit
I think in soon time it will get there once people begin to properly romanticize the V8 and it was the last to feature hydraulic steering
Nero_Wolff@reddit
Last hydraulic steering, last high revving NA M3. Styling is a departure from the revered E46 but the E9X is still a lot more classic BMW than the G80 is
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Also, the E90 isn't that much heavier than the E46, about another 150lbs or so.
Frankly the worst thing about the car is it's sheet metal - the interior generally feels very modern outside of the screen, which is small and well integrated, it's for sure a ton nicer than any prior M car.
Really the worst thing about the car is the exterior styling being a bit uninspired and stuck in that weird mid 00's funk BMW got in to, and the maintenance issues of the S65, which are all known quantities but definitely not negligible.
CSLsven@reddit
Worth noting the specific car that sold is a “single hump,” no screen
Nero_Wolff@reddit
Yeah the S65 is actually only barely heavier than the S54 in the E46. The E9X definitely grew in size but the E46 was never a lightweight either. Although interestingly the F80 is slightly lighter than the E90
As for interior, the only thing I truly hate is the stupid AF retractable cup holders. For the screen, mine is a 2011 so the update one and at some point I intend to do a carplay retrofit, so I’m not concerned there
For exterior, I actually quite like the look of the E9X and E60 M cars, but i do believe the E46 and F80 are better looking M3s. But the LCI E9X with the competition wheels, imo looks very good
Maintenance issues of the S65 are real but engines that rev beyond 8k and dont have problems are quite rare, especially of this era. I used to have a GT350 so finicky engines and diligent maintenance are nothing new to me and the thrill of engines like these up at the high rpms is intoxicating
Hows your Supra treating you? I had a 23 MT before selling it for my M3
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I'm liking it quite a bit, the steering is typical of modern BMW but I think this car got one of their best efforts in years, aside from that it's a great car. I'm constantly in a bit of a rut with respect to what car I want to make my permanent sports car - as in ICE three petal manuals are nearly dead and I'd like to hang on to one example forever, this might be the one.
Funny about the high revving engines and maintenance, coming from owning S2000s in the past I've constantly said the two don't need to be one and the same, but I get that's not the case for the overwhelming majority of revvy engines.
Nero_Wolff@reddit
Nice! Glad the Supra is suiting you well, its definitely a good execution for the modern era, and its very easy to own. It holds value well, is very reliable and is actually quite efficient on gas. I personally hope manuals will remain available for the enthusiast cars but they are becoming more and more uncommon, especially from Germany
And yep youre right the exceptions are the Hondas, both the S2000 and the NA1/NA2 NSXs rev high and are generally reliable. I guess the other exception is modern Porsche flat 6s, but that wasnt always the case (IMS and bore scoring)
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I'd agree.
In fact, I'd go so far as to say the V8 is very romanticized already, the bigger issue is that it's also known to need rod bearings replaced often and that's like 5k without blinking an eye. But once you get to the generation of people who have sufficient funds and want that specific car, it's going back up in value.
atomicskiracer@reddit
People said that about each of the m3’s you’ve listen since the e30.
cat_prophecy@reddit
It's a totally charm-less car that everyone thought was fuck ugly when it came out and its totally outclassed by anything that came after it.
You could make the argument that any older car is going to be slower than newer generations. But there are plenty of old cars that have charm and character and were well-loved in their time. This isn't one of them.
The person who bought it either has more money than sense, is unaware that this car isn't that valuable, believes it to be something it's not, or just has some weird love for the car and got stuck in a bidding war.
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
Can’t tell if bait or low iq. I’m very involved in BMW stuff in general like BMW CCA and M3s specifically, and not a single thing in your comment is correct. E9X was well celebrated in period as a fitting end to an era, and continues to be celebrated today (rightfully so). Having experienced a few examples in many different states of modification, I’d certainly place it above at least your minivan for charm and character.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I think if you're going to look at a recent entry that's got a small displacement V8 with a 9k RPM redline, manual transmission, and old school hydraulic steering and say that's "charm less" then it's difficult to take anything seriously lol.
not your cup of tea? Fine, lots of cars aren't mine, but charmless? lol come on.
Nero_Wolff@reddit
To clarify, the redline of the S65 is 8400
JustThall@reddit
The ugly was the interior hump for the nav screen. This example is “humpless” - so interior is timeless and gets lots of value points.
I don’t recall much complains about exterior. I would reduce a few notches for the “charmless” statements, especially given what BMW exteriors became later
Zelderian@reddit
I’m always curious. What does the low mileage matter if it’s just a paperweight? An old one could be made to look like a sub-1k mile car with like $10-$20k. Outside of people trying to verify the VIN to the mileage, what’s the difference in just telling people it’s crazy low mileage?
And even if someone planned to buy a car like this to drive, it’s not “basically brand new”. Every gasket and rubber piece in the engine bay will be insanely brittle and would need replacing. Assuming the PO didn’t do it, it’ll probably quite a bit of updating to make it roadworthy again. At that point, why not just buy one that’s seen low, but consistent miles throughout the years?
devastationz@reddit
This is like art, just trading hands at ever appreciating values to decouple it from fiat currency.
These cars aren’t even for driving anymore. I doubt this M3 will ever see 5,000 miles.

Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
I'd rather pay that for an E90 than whatever a G80 goes for these days.
ShadyDrunks@reddit
And you will be outperformed by the G80 in every metric possible
BMW is about the I6
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
Not everyone cares about straight line speed. Also, one of the fastest cars in time attack is an E92 M3. It’s mostly the driver. At some point the power becomes a bottleneck but that’s nothing some Nippon noisemakers can’t solve.
ShadyDrunks@reddit
The G80 handles better…
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
This is what TikTok does to a mfer
ShadyDrunks@reddit
That’s what having a single car that makes more than all your cars combined does to a MFer
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
I miss being 16.
aigeneratedreply@reddit
You can always count on the “no torque” trolls to make an appearance.
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Every metric except driving pleasure and aesthetic enjoyment.
ShadyDrunks@reddit
Faster car will always give me more pleasure idk about yall
And the G80 brings a way meaner presence in person, you know that shit is fast. E9X is all “yeah I make 250 torque”
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Shouldn't you have a Plaid then? Or at least a 3 Performance?
ShadyDrunks@reddit
Yes plaid when it comes to aesthetic enjoyment lol
Always the slow car defenders jumping in with the Tesla argument, it’s boring, use your brain come up with your own argument
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
You said it yourself: faster will always be better apparently.
ShadyDrunks@reddit
Great move to continue the same shitty Tesla argument

Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
That's fine by me.
Need4Speeeeeed@reddit
Not a penny over $204K.
ShadyDrunks@reddit
Ah yes showing a 15 year old car with less than 1,000 miles as an example of why another 15 year old car with 100k is worth more money than a brand new car
SaintTastyTaint@reddit

half_regard@reddit
stock market would've been a better investment
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
If you have the money to be spending north of $200k on a 15 year old M3, diversifying with assets not subject to the whims of volatile and irrational world leaders is very smart. With how car collecting has exploded recently, if you have 8+ figure net worth, literally parking your money in a car isn’t a bad idea at all.
JimEdF@reddit
It’s never a bad idea to buy a car you love. I don't need to tell you, based on your "stable". My big issue would be garage queen vs driver. For me, if I bought a great car and couldn't/shouldn't drive it I would prefer to have my money in stocks. PS: I am a level below you with an E92 and Cayman GTS
Bigboyyy66@reddit
When you got millions in the bank, this wouldn’t put a dent in your networth.
TurboSalsa@reddit
If it 10x'd in value that would be one thing, but even if I was a billionaire I don't think I'd get much value out of stashing a car like this instead of driving it. The owner probably spent more time changing fluids and cleaning spiderwebs out of the engine bay than he did enjoying it on the road.
TurboFucked@reddit
You're describing what tons of rich do with their cars: buy them, lock them up in storage, then forget about them.
What's five figures on a quick dopamine hit? Then you have a slot filled in your aircraft hanger garage with bays stacked 3 high.
TurboSalsa@reddit
It makes sense for a McLaren F1 or a Ferrari 250 GTO, but this is a production vehicle (albeit a special edition). And even some of the super rich guys who own those cars take them out on a track every now and then.
Sal_Undee@reddit
Impulse buys don't need to make sense. Who's to say this buyer didn't have M3 Competition package on his list?
half_regard@reddit
i mean, by definition, it's up to a 10% dent
UndeadWaffle12@reddit
If only my stocks were as beautiful to look at
atomictyler@reddit

ThatOneBr@reddit
If you consider price to buy, price to store, maintenance (unless none was done in which case the car’s fucked)… ehh
May have been worth it for the guy who got it new, not for whoever’s buying it now.
I’ll never understand buying a car like this just to let it appreciate and sell in 20 years. Your money is much more secure and with possibly better returns if you just invest it even conservatively.
Well I’m poor regardless lmao
Dr__Nick@reddit
It’s only worth it if you derive some pleasure from driving or looking at it. Otherwise it’s very high opportunity cost.
“had you taken that same $78,000 and invested it into the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSAX) in early 2011, it would be worth approximately $416,000 today (as of late April 2026).”
ThatOneBr@reddit
Triple the return, no worrying about storage, theft, damages, nothing.
Way I see it this chump just deprived himself of driving the sports car he bought to make less money than he could’ve had had he just invested it
breadbedman@reddit
I mean he got to look at it, I guess?
Dr__Nick@reddit
Well it says it sold on BaT in 2021, so he drove it like 600 miles in 5 years, LOL.
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
I always say that I never need to take a Vanguard or Blackrock account for oil changes every 6 months, or rent out a 5 x 2m space to store my managed fund in.
phxbimmer@reddit
The problem with a car like that is that so much of its value is tied to the ultra-low mileage, which means it can never really be driven. I never understood the car collector mentality, I like cars because I can drive them and go do fun things with them.
IWantToPlayGame@reddit
What you fail to realize is people at this level have cars in the multiples. They have garages full of cars. Trust me, they're driving. This specific car will be preserved, but they're out enjoying other fun cars.
phxbimmer@reddit
Seems excessive and wasteful to me, but alright. I already find having two cars to be difficult enough to deal with, lol.
breadbedman@reddit
Excessive and wasteful is the name of the game, my friend.
IWantToPlayGame@reddit
That's because you're poor, like me.
When you have the wealth to have barns full of cars and administrative assistants who handle the day-to-day upkeep, it's really not that difficult!
I'm being dead serious.
phxbimmer@reddit
I feel like if you need multiple barns and people to run your car collection, it's a bit excessive. That being said, if somebody gave me a billion dollars I'd probably spend some amount of it on a stable of old BMW's.
Effective-Ad-789@reddit

Effective-Ad-789@reddit

FesteringNeonDistrac@reddit
I have a collection of shot glasses from places I've traveled to, but I don't use them all, because even when I was an alcoholic, I knew that was way too much to drink.
phxbimmer@reddit
The closest thing I have to a collection are my tools, but they all get used daily since I'm a mechanic. Everything else in my life I have the bare minimum of.
GadgetChachajii@reddit
This is less a used car and more a time capsule.
At 725 miles, you’re basically paying for preserved history + the last era of NA V8 M3s.
leftlanespawncamper@reddit
That's unfortunate. Why buy a car like that if you can't afford (or are too scared) to drive it?
AndroidMyAndroid@reddit
He bought it to learn how to drive stick, and teach his friends to drive stick, but then realized he doesn't want to drive stick so he parked it and forgot about it for 15 years.

Morbidly_Off_Piste@reddit
lol it's funny because back in 2011 I test drove a car almost exactly like this (different color) and my immediate reaction was that the manual transmission was massively holding back the fun of this car.
The V8 is very revvy, doesn't have a lot of torque, and really benefits from quick DCT shifting. It's 100% obvious that the manual was an afterthought.
But either way, this is not a $200k driving experience. This is simply a collector's car due to the low miles.

aprtur@reddit
Smart dealer to stick it on BaT - they listed the car for $95k on the lot, according to this thread on BimmerPost forum where people saw it in person, and cleaned up on good old boy for another $110k on BaT. Must suck knowing you're too slow to catch the car on the lot to save 50%.
taticalgoose@reddit
To top it off, it's black/black which is such a bland combo. When you see absurd prices for a low mile Evos/Civics/something where no one saved good ones and all the existing stock is beat, I get it. But there are plenty of very nice sub 30k mile E9X M3s out there so it's not like this is your only chance to get a nice one. Yes I know the buyer for this car is different than the buyer for a 20k mile one but the point is, there are plenty of nice ones around.
What a disappointing way to spend $205k+ premium.
aprtur@reddit
Agree with you that the spend is insane, but there are some things going for this car that make it a very hard to find combo - primarily mileage, manual, triple black, and single hump all combined together on a comp, with the manual and single hump combo already slimming things down significantly on an LCI E92. Preliminary research says less than 2600 manual LCI in North America, a tiny fragment of that being Comp, and a fragment of that being single hump cars. There are some things I would've hoped to see to make it more desirable (like sport cloth instead of leather, or some other Individual options that'd make the car stand out more), but it's far from a "plop down to the corner and buy another one" spec.
TripleFive@reddit
They might have several already.
I know a guy with like 9 e9x M3's
SageAgainstDaMachine@reddit
And yet OEMs continue to push into new realms of enshittification. If nothing else, this just tells me that someone with means chose to buy and drive a time capsule of cars as they used to be instead of a car as they are now. TLDR is we've overshot peak car experience and (this) money says we should go back but OEMs are too busy making money selling ugly screen-mobiles to your aging parents who don't care about driving pleasure anymore Maybe I'm way off base and this is just crazy market speculation or money laundering, IDK...
gumol@reddit
the buyer said he doesn't intend to drive it
w_a_w@reddit
BS, he's buying for pleasure AND speculating. He sees a million price tag at the end for his kids or something in 10-20 years. He also gets to jerk in his garage to boot. Can't say I blame him.
