Modern cars with 90s look?
Posted by Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 89 comments
I like the long and angular look of 90s cars. I tried searching for it online but it only gives semi-retro stuff thats like, just modern looking with a silly shaped back or something. I dont like the rounded edges and bulk of modern cars, this is not a thing of performance or quirks, i geniunely just dont like how modern ones look at all.
TheLastGenXer@reddit
im not sure what angular 90s cars youre thinking of.
when i think 90s design,
i think 96 taurus neon, 94 caprice
are you thinking of 80s cars??
Many-Pomegranate-33@reddit
Angular designed cars from the 90s for me is basically any W body GM(Lumina, Grand Prix)
Camaro/firebird trans am(both 80s/90s).
Mitsubishi 3000gt/dodge stealth
Mustang 80s and 90s was angular and rounded at the same time.
Idk if OP is thinking of hatch back 80s cars but lots of those had some angular designs mainly the dodge/eagle hatch backs.
If you want extreme angle you cant forget the rolling hand held vacuum known as the Lumina APV/Pontiac Trans Sport van.
TheLastGenXer@reddit
i consider stuff like the w body grandprix an 80s car as it didnt change a lot from 88 to 90something
Many-Pomegranate-33@reddit
I think it was 88 to 96 or something like that
DDG_Dillon@reddit
3000gt has really good aero, so much so it has active aero. I wouldn't consider it to be angular
Many-Pomegranate-33@reddit
When I think of that car Im thinking about the angle of the rear glass similar to a hatchback car.
Outside of that yes its more aero based for sure.
OveVernerHansen@reddit
The W124 was made into the 1990'es, that was a boxy thing but from the 1980'es.
The W210 was anything but boxy.
Kdoesntcare@reddit
In the 90s VWs were boxy. After owning a '92 GTI (MK2) and a '95 Jetta (mk3) I thought the '99-'05 (mk4)s were ugly because they're actually round.
Th next generation up, the mk5, looks like they stuck an air pump into a mk4 and over inflated it, making it fat and ugly. Because it was the shortest generation I joke that even VW thinks the mk5 is ugly.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Well, 80s better said yeah. My dream car is a Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
What year, that could be many years/styles.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
454 specifically
HudsDad@reddit
I don't think the Monte Carlo had a 454 since 1970/71.
DoubleResponsible276@reddit
If OP keeps answering questions, it’s gonna be revealed that they actually prefer something from the model T era
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
well...i do love the designs of these things. If im ever rich im totally buying one moded with a modern motor for pleasure strolls.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Oh, well i did mention im not really a car guy. I had a photo saved of it and i was under the impression it was a 80s 90s thing. But yeah, it looks awesome
upthedips@reddit
I had an 84 Buick Regal and damn if that car wasn't fun. The styling made it look huge but next to my friend's late 90s Camry it was smaller in every dimension.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Awesome looking thing!
upthedips@reddit
Yep, Buick's version of the Monte Carlo. It had maroon velour interior and a thin glowing strip of light around the dash.

S/O Renault 5. I’m in USA but wish I was in EU to get one. Super retro looking, EV hatch. Something we just don’t get here.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Well i am in EU. This looks cool though, electrics are still kinda hard to manage around here though, not that many charging stations and mechanics dont really have any idea what to do. My mom has a hybrid renault i think and whenever it breaks she needs to go to the Renault Dealership because no other mechanic knows how to fix it
d__max@reddit
You and me can both wish this goes to production then lol https://www.hyundai-n.com/en/models/rolling-lab/n-vision-74
Gaddaim@reddit
Retro-futuristic. Its amazing
MdMooseMD@reddit
That’s more 70s-80s than 90s. 74 to be specific lol
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
that does look awesome
Ballamookieofficial@reddit
Off the top of my head from the side the new Hyundai santa fe looks pretty good from the side.
Facuk_@reddit
Hyundai ioniq 5 has this kind of vibe
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
I like the general look, but i dont like the back, if it tapered down a bit at the end it would have been a really good choice
Facuk_@reddit
But at least side profile looks almost like Lancia Delta heh
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
if you squint your eyes without rubbing the tears away, lancia delta looks so cool
Facuk_@reddit
Lancia Delta looks cool anyway!
Spanconstant5@reddit
the hyundai ioniq, but more like 80s- early 90s
SubGothius@reddit
The Ioniq5 specifically, which takes some design inspiration from classic Giugiaro designs like the original Hyundai Pony and Lancia Delta.
Facuk_@reddit
I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees Delta in it's side profile

GM made a handful of cars that looked very 90s yet were sold brand new in 2005
FirehawkLS1@reddit
Best bet is to buy older cars from that era and restomod or drive as is. Never happening again with any new mass market offerings due to regulations.
DoctorSquibb420@reddit
Just get an old civic. You can still get almost every part aftermarket, and even paying labor for repairs won't kill ya.
RAMBIGHORNY@reddit
Mercedes G-Class or Ineos Grenadier
Aberration1111@reddit
Try Cadillac CTS, Acura TSX, Chevrolet Camaro, Honda Element, Subaru Forester, Pontiac Vibe
Autobacs-NSX@reddit
What you’re asking for doesn’t exist in a blanket sense. First of all, 90s cars are probably the most rounded cars ever to exist, this is the melted soap bar era of car design. So either you do like rounded edges, or, you’re talking about 80s design language that bled into the 90s (like C4 Corvette and NSX). Secondly, all cars today will have modern designs to stay competitive in the market. No one is going to randomly launch an outdated design outside of a super boutique car manufacturer like TVR or something who (used to) just have crazy bespoke proportions. but low production handbuilt cars are the most unreliable cars on the market.
Lastly, it’s kind of odd to me that you’re not a car enthusiast and admittedly don’t know anything about cars but you’re sort of dying on this hill lol. Honestly just get something black on black that hides all the angles and send it. Like a Toyota Camry NightShade Edition
newtonreddits@reddit
Modern off road vehicles. Both the new Land Cruiser Heritage 1958 and the Ineos Grenadier look like old vehicles.
Autobacs-NSX@reddit
(And $90,000)

Which car is unreliable? And I'm not sure what price has to do with anything.

The Mahindra Roxor looks like an old Jeep.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
I generally like retro stuff. I have really old furniture and i plan to builda retro-looking house. Im not a colector or something though, i just like the older look. I dont like modern cars but they seem...aggresive and imposing while also hard to make out any details on it, i like how older cars seem more grounded and i like the shadows of the angular shapes. Im not a car guy though, im for it purely for the design.
BluesyMoo@reddit
Same. I also don't like the huge grilles and aggressive looks.
FartZuggerberg@reddit
Even caring about aesthetics to the point that you’re here asking makes you sort of a car guy, welcome.
Unfortunately a lot of the things that make some 80s and early 90s cars sleek, cool and good looking are also the reasons for the poor safety.
I do understand what you’re looking for though. Many modern SUVs are going back to the boxy/angular/retro aesthetic, though sedans are few and far between these days, especially in the style you seek.
The Hyundai Ioniq5 picks up on some 80s design queues but is still futuristic looking. This applies to other stuff in the Hyundai lineup as well. It’s also more of small crossover/large hatchback.
The rivian r3 is also on the same category, though unreleased. I love how it reminds me of the lancia delta integrale, or the lada niva.
As far as currently available cars go, the mustang, and challenger are very much inspired by their predecessors and retain some of the retro aesthetic.

Lonely_Let8637@reddit
The closest thing I can think of is the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser limited throwback edition. Not even sure if it was available in the states due to safety/environmental regulations but looked amazing.
Ford also redesigned the new Bronco sport package so it doesn’t just look like a re-branded Ford Explorer. I’ve seen people customize the grill and paint job to make it look more like the 90s Bronco.
And there’s always Jeep.
Other than that, you’re not going to find anything that looks like a Lincoln Town Car or Buick Le Sabre from the 90s. The Kia K5 and a few Mercedes models are the only cars I can think of that are full-sized sedans but that aren’t angular like 80s/early 90s cars
newtonreddits@reddit
Yup off roaders. The Ineos Grenadier literally looks like an old Land Rover.
Lonely_Let8637@reddit
Oh yeah! Costco had one on display a few weeks ago and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it
Sideburn_Cookie_Man@reddit
Nah.
The laws have changed drastically around vehicle safety and design.
DoubleResponsible276@reddit
You’re not gonna get what you want unless you have A LOT of money to spend or mechanically skilled to do it yourself.
imtotalyarobot@reddit
Ioniq 5?
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Too rounded, i like when they have a flat front and back like, at the same height in relation to the ground.
imtotalyarobot@reddit
Fair enough. Closest I can think of that shares a simmilar design to older cars is the 911
Imaginary-Thing-7159@reddit
mini coopers 2016-2024
Equal-Fee770@reddit
A lot of the off-road oriented SUVs. The Toyota Land Cruiser, the forerunner, the Honda pilot and passport seemed to be more squared off an edgy. The Dodge Challenger that they stopped making in 2023 is incredibly retro modern.
doc_55lk@reddit
Not sure what you want really exists tbh. Closest you can get is maybe a Chrysler 300 or a W212 Mercedes E Class because those have a more hard edged and well defined 3 box silhouette but the best way to get the 90s car look is still to just get a 90s car.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
i would love a straight up 90s car, my worry is the difficulty in fixing it if something breaks and safety (i heard 90s car have horribile crumple zones)
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
The Chrysler 300 is a good suggestion.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Yes it is. Seems like a really good mix of that look but with modern comfort inside
SubGothius@reddit
Also the Dodge Magnum, same platform and similar style but as a wagon.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
It's my choice, great car mechanically and I really like the styling of the 12-14 models with the touch of chrome on the bumperettes, tail lights, etc.
Substantial-Onion-92@reddit
I recently bought and drive a 92' F150 and my life has been so much better. The simplicity, the cassette player, then thumbs up at the gas station.. it is the easiest I've worked on by far. Little things come and go like exhaust leak and just fixed my window motor this weekend but I live for the "experience".
doc_55lk@reddit
Not much you can do in your position tbh. Different time periods have different designs that are largely informed by the aerodynamic and efficiency standards of each time period. There are some design trends that are also informed by public perceptions too though. The 00s was rounded because people were tired of the hard edges of the 90s. The 2010s were angular because people got tired of blobby designs. The 2020s are smooth edged because maximizing EV range requires that.
CatManDo206@reddit
Manufacturers should bring classic models back with modern mechanical parts
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
So true. Apparently we moved to the bean bags on wheels due to stuff like not wanting to behead pedestrians if you hit them with the sharp corner...idk, seems like a good price for me.
fad3dm1ndz@reddit
If you're in the UK, you can get the Honda E. I love the throwback feel and retro design of that thing.
Tall-Drawing8270@reddit
Challengers and chargers, although I wouldn't wanna actually own one. If you mean more like a 300zx kind of angled the closest thing now without spending a ton is probably like a BRZ or a Miata.
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
The Studebaker Avanti didn't completely end production until 2006, it was made by several different companies using chassis, and drivetrains from other major manufactures.
Given what you've said here about you style preferences it sounds like the perfect quirky car for you. You would need to learn, and find a good mechanic though. Certainly not as easy as buying a new toyota.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
I love the design of this thing, kinda of exactly what i want lmao. Saddly im not rich enough to support such a high maintanance thing
Heavy_Gap_5047@reddit
What do you think of the new Dodge Charger?
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Looks good, im not a fan of the rounded back but i like the front.
Samsonlp@reddit
Federal safety standards changed the look of cars. The change protects people and animals from rolling through windshields and corners of bumpers from destroying organs and severing limbs. That's why they have all started looking like that.
Reasonable_Hyena_163@reddit (OP)
Sigh...sacrifices must be made for cool looking cars.

The tree of cool must be refreshed with the blood of pedestrians :)

Definitely will cost more to repair a newer car and there is more that can go wrong. You should look for something with a dependable engine. GM 3800v6 or Ford 4.6 V8, neither will give you incredible horsepower but will be more dependable.
nopester24@reddit
yeah there are no modern angular cars that are also easy / cheap to fix. if you want an 80s car, then get an 80s car and learn to wrench. or even if you dont, they're still relatively inexpensive to fix, but time is running out

Nobody is born knowing cars, one day we find a machine we love and we either have to become a steward of it or watch it wither.

I mean unless we change safety standards and stop bigger companies from owning certain companies i dont see how you can prevent it
