30
They've painted the 20 on the wrong side of the road and with the wrong orientatiom. The sign is the only thing that matters.
Soluchyte@reddit
The road painting of speed limits is also not legally binding, they have to use signs.
takesthebiscuit@reddit
Is it possible the road signs are backwards?
Why_do_I_bother999@reddit
The council workers certainly are.
PennyBunPudding@reddit
Doesn't matter. Red circle signs are the only ones that are law. Any thing else is advisory. Although, it's highlight recommended you follow for safety reasons and insurance etc
markvauxhall@reddit
If it's anything like my area, people who are angry about 20mph limits spin the signs around on the poles so that the sign is pointing the wrong way and the limit is unenforceable.
All that effort because they don't want to go a little bit more slowly on a residential street.
PracticeNo8733@reddit
It's the road signs that matter legally, though. So even if they weren't intended to be that way around, that's the way they are.
Oldfart_karateka@reddit
I think they've misread the plan for the markings as the triangles on the speed bump ate on the wrong side, too.. they should be facing oncoming traffic. The 20 should be onthe other side of the road, rotated through 180°, to tell road users they are entering a 20 zone.
Mr-Incy@reddit
I thought the same about the arrows, but if you zoom in you can see they are correct, the bump rises where the arrows are painted in the same direction, probably to bring the road up to kerb level for the unmarked pedestrian crossing, dimpled paving slabs either side.
Can't see where the raised part ends, I am guessing it will be below the bottom of the picture.
Oldfart_karateka@reddit
You're bang on, I was looking at it wrong. Thanks!
Jesisawesome@reddit
I mean....looking at the road, it does seem odd. but the sign is the sign.
BuzDrivar@reddit
Floor markings mean fk all. Always follow signs.
_Democracy_Manifest_@reddit
20 if you're on the road and 30 if you're above the road.
V8boyo@reddit
Looking at the base of the signs they look new so the 20 road sign is probably still there from the previous speed limit and is awaiting removal.
No_Group5174@reddit
The road markings have been painted on backwards. Who paints speed bump warning when you are leaving a speed bump? (And where is the speed bump FFS?)
Tonybham01@reddit
It could be a one way street
Mr-Incy@reddit
Upright signs are the legally enforceable speed limit, the ones painted on the road are just reminders, so in the picture the speed limit is 30mph once you pass those upright signs.
It appears the people being paid to put up the signs and paint the road have made a mistake, which is pretty typical across the country.
roygbiv1000@reddit
I used to have a space outside my house for disabled "bagde" holders. I don't know if anyone ever contested it.
AndromedaFire@reddit
Regardless of the spelling disabled pays painted on residential roads like that aren’t legally enforceable anyway. They are just a request to keep it clear for disabled users. It is also in no way owned or reserved for the specific disabled person that requested the council paint it there and Is for any disabled person
n3m0sum@reddit
As with many legal things, it's a little complicated.
They are legally enforceable if they have a disabled parking restriction sign on an upright pole near them. Most don't, some do, it varies by council.
Almost universally true, almost. Some few councils (Tower Hamlets is one) allow for personal disabled parking bays that are restricted to a vehicle from an address. This is rare but achieved via a Traffic Regulation Order.
The_Epic_Fail_Guy@reddit
The law is a huge grey area on purpose, designed as such so people can make money from it being overly distorted, instead of simple and clear. If the law was like an algorithm, it'd be much simpler, yet instead we get vagueness.
Mr-Incy@reddit
Haha, reminds me of the shorts where they paint the word SOTP or SHCOOL.
schwillton@reddit
BUP SOTP
DTH2001@reddit
I expect that the people who put up the signs and those who put the road markings on are from different companies. Councils have to contract everything out, which can lead to a lack of joined up thinking.
Mr-Incy@reddit
Most definitely two separate teams of people.
wildstoo@reddit
Thwenty
MxJamesC@reddit
You add them up so 50
_Bluestar_Bus_Soton_@reddit
The red circle sign is what counts. You could have 20 paintings all over the road but speed limits are only enforceable when there's a sign with a red circle
StevenXSG@reddit
Same on motorways, red circle signs are speed limits, flashing yellow signs (usually older ones now) are advisory.
Spinxy88@reddit
Going along the M40 toward Oxford, the yellow signs came on for 50, then 40, road was empty so I just kept going. Then, round a bend, there was an unlit accident involving 3 cars blocking half the carriage way. Now I always follow them.
VauxsHorse@reddit
Residential street limited to one way traffic should be 10mph, 20 or 30mph and a child steps out from between cars will have yours and the Childs live ruined
UnremarkableCake@reddit
26.67mph is the average across all three signs, so go for that.
MixerFistit@reddit
That's mean
dwhite21787@reddit
Someone with art skills could change 20 to 28 and up that average
eltipperino82@reddit
Take off and landing speed from the speed hump?
MissionLet7301@reddit
The legally enforceable limit would be 30.
However with parked cars on both sides of the road I'm not sure how much over 20 you'd really want to be doing.
PrimeZodiac@reddit
Clearly you add the two together for 50 /s
Grampa_Flump@reddit
The painted 20 is fake
sparkes1911@reddit
It's 30, but actually the black border around the sign means it's advisory and not mandatory.
What makes it a 30 is the lack of repeating signs to inform you of the speed and if there's street lighting every 100 yards or so, so you would assume a default 30 based on that.
TheThiefMaster@reddit
The "black border is advisory" thing is for if the actual circle is black, but it's red. Anything outside the circle doesn't matter.
sparkes1911@reddit
Any black border is advisory. It's also a square sign, so information, not a round sign which is an instruction.
TheThiefMaster@reddit
Check "signs giving orders" section in the highway code: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/traffic-signs
It's an "order" sign, i.e. a restriction you must obey. The rectangular border is because it's a zone sign, rather than a traditional speed limit with repeater signs.
RefrigeratorSorry55@reddit
50
Dependent_Ad8920@reddit
AI. Lines don't match up, 20 mph and triangles on wrong sides of carriageways and white paint looks 3D and too white.
Dunk546@reddit
Everyone is saying the signs are right but what if they faced the signs the wrong way..? It really looks like they should be 20mph signs as they look like the entrance to a minor road. Obviously hard to tell though, from just this pic.
kainbloodheart@reddit
Signs are right as in that what's enforceable but they may be set up wrong.
Daveddozey@reddit
Then the limit word be unenforceable
LordDethBeard@reddit
As I understand it, road painted signs are "reminders" and are largely unenforceable without a corresponding sign. As the sign says 30, that is the limit
huskydaisy@reddit
It's a thirty in that photo. The number in the red circle is what matters.
Possible explanations include:
Expect it to maybe get fixed in the next 0-20 years.
Fingerbob73@reddit
Or maybe 0-30 years?
fluffybit@reddit
They probably had to put them up to cancel a 20 zone that was in force.
TheThiefMaster@reddit
The local council likely has a website to report issues - I reported a reversed 20/30 sign like these in mine and they fixed it sharpish.
Check the limit on the road that joins this one and you'll know if some numpty has spun them round or not.
Sc0ttiShDUdE@reddit
50 you add them together
Outrageous_Shirt_737@reddit
They’ve made a boo boo.
actualcompile@reddit
A speed limit is only enforceable if it is inside a red circle. Anything else is advisory (although wise to be followed).
The big circles that councils paint on the road are not enforceable, they are advisory.
In this case, the speed limit is 30 as signposted.
At a guess, they’ve either painted the junction backwards, or the speed limit signs are on the wrong way around (or have t yet been changed). Until those signs say 20, the paint on the road has no leverage.
Nightlightweaver@reddit
If the number isn't in a red circle then it's just a suggestion and not enforceable.
Yubitzume@reddit
30 onlon the road 20 max over the speed bump, the bumps are marked mostly for emergency services in mind
cypherdious@reddit
Just do 20 in any case. That area is too tight people should really be driving slow.
old-skool-bro@reddit
Twirty.
rollo_read@reddit
Ah haha, in conflicting situations such as this, speed limit reverts to national speed limits.
SithoDude@reddit
This is why I have trust issues.
mpanase@reddit
signage > road painting
Peppl@reddit
its 30, the marking on the road are recommendations, not law. learned that on a speeding course oddly
AcanthisittaThink813@reddit
25?
YetAnotherInterneter@reddit
When in doubt, go for the lower limit. That way you are guaranteed not to be penalised.
Jacktheforkie@reddit
What the fuck is that layout, the limit is 30 but might be safer to do 20 as it’s not particularly wide
ZealousidealTutor254@reddit
25
Jezbod@reddit
Alternatively, the signs are facing the wrong way...
Timely_Pattern3209@reddit
Doesn't matter. The limit on the sign is the one you follow.
81tilinfinity@reddit
25
JohnLennonsNotDead@reddit
Only speed limits in a red circle are applicable, the 20mph is wrong or as someone else suggested, on the wrong side.
HawkwardGames@reddit
It’s 30. The council have just managed to paint 20 on the road while also putting up signs saying the 20 zone ends. Absolute clown show.
TWOITC@reddit
Yeah, it looks like the 30 signs and the road and pavement around it are new and someone messed up with the 20 paint on the road.
