Why is my dispatcher mad I'm quitting?
Posted by DepressedDragonBorn@reddit | Truckers | View on Reddit | 129 comments
After almost a year and a half at my first company I put in a 12 day notice since I got a local hourly job.
Figured I'll give notice since I enjoyed my time here and I get along with my dispatcher, but now this guy sounds so butt hurt and keeps asking questions (most I don't answer since it's none of his business) essentially implying I'm making a mistake.
Honestly I could care less how he feels but it is really confusing why he cares so much, it's not like people don't quit every day.
Do dispatchers really take it personally when someone quits?
LoopDoGG79@reddit
I got lucky my first job my dispatcher was understanding. I had young kids at the time, even though I was only gone 4 or 5 days at a time, it was too much. I wanted and needed to get a local job. Oddly, had a friend that I use to stop at the same rest areas with and talk on the phone, he was trying to convince me to stay, that I was making a mistake đ
Lilgreenone@reddit
Transportation Safety Director here. My dispatch team does this, too. By you leaving, you are leaving them short-handed, I would bet and they donât have a good replacement for you. You sound like an asset to the company and you leaving is going to squeeze them in some way.
Lion-El-Johnson77@reddit
Because companies in all industries demand loyalty. Only going one way of course. It isnât deeper than that.
OnAJourneyMan@reddit
Thatâs a really dumb view. Nobody cares about âloyaltyâ. Itâs just hard to get good drivers and sucks when they leave, makes our job a lot harder in the office.
Still, that dispatcher is out of line. When one of my drivers quits in good standing, I shake their hand, wish em luck and let them know they are welcome back. Sucks, makes me job harder but we are both adults.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
Nobody cares about loyalty? Drivers feel like that starts with the dispatchers. Drivers feel like you all don't care about loyalty. Drivers feel like dispatchers are not loyal about drivers and look down upon us like we're dirt under their shoes. It's a top down problem. It's a dispatchers. Don't respect the drivers and are not loyal to the drivers. Then the drivers are not loyal to the company. It's plain and simple. It's respect.
OnAJourneyMan@reddit
Iâm going to preface what Iâm about to say. Iâm a dispatcher but Iâve been a driver. 6 years OTR. I still drive on weekends. So I know what itâs like from both ends.
Respect is a two way street. It doesnât only start with dispatchers. This is an industry with a lot of bullshit in it. That bullshit tends to flow down hill to drivers. A good dispatcher mitigates what he can, but at the end of the day the driver is usually left holding the bag because he is the one out there on the road.
Its a tough business with slim profit margins though. There will always be some things that just gotta get done. And this sometimes creates a toxic relationship between dispatch and driver, but thatâs usually because of a lack of professionalism on one side or the other. Sometimes I have no choice but to ask a driver to handle a shitty situation. A good dispatcher tris their best to push back flagrant bullshit or at worst spread the bullshit out and reward a driver who has to deal with it. But when the choice is someone does it or the company risks losing a contract or goes in the negative, itâs just gotta get done. That said, a good dispatcher never asks you to break the law or drive in equipment or conditions that are unsafe.
Some dispatchers donât care, some are petty and vindictive, it happens. Itâs a problem.
A good driver understands there is bullshit in this industry an theyâll have to deal with it on occasion. And most are willing to deal with a little bullshit from time to time, epically if dispatch has their back or compensates them.
But some driers are the biggest sacks of crap Iâve ever met. Entitled bitchy divas who think they are gods gift to trucking but havenât showered in two weeks. Not willing to do an ounce of work more than hold the steering wheel. Not willing or capable of rubbing two brain cells together to solve a problem before calling dispatch so I can get the crayons out to explain. Willing to cuss you out and personally insult you over the slightest thing. And theyâre like that from the get go.
Bad dispatchers make drivers like that and Drivers like that make dispatchers shitty and burnt out. Itâs a two way street and everyone suffers for it.
Bad dispatchers and bad drivers make the industry a nightmare for the professionals here just looking to make a buck and go home.
And it all starts with the customers! Fuck customers!
Beautiful_Cod_6524@reddit
Worst comment ever, especially for a two way player!
OnAJourneyMan@reddit
Come on, Iâm sure you know plenty of drivers like that. I know I did even before I got into dispatch. Hell, you sound like one.
Every job has some bullshit. Trucking has more than most. You canât have a complete come apart and verbally assault your dispatcher every time you have a minor inconvenience.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
Thank you by the way for posting here. I do appreciate your time. I do see your heart. My comment May or may not be directed at you. Depending on how you actually do your job.
OnAJourneyMan@reddit
I respect and appreciate you for saying that. Iâm not taking any of the comments personally.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
I wonder how many drivers quit because of dispatchers?
OnAJourneyMan@reddit
Depends on company. I never really interacted with my dispatchers as a driver. But Iâve got some that call every day to chit chat, Iâve got some that call every day to bitch over the most minor bullshit.
Beautiful_Cod_6524@reddit
There's no such thing as giving loyalty to any salty ass holes, the crusty, crumbly, audacity of trying to act paranoid is atrocious!
snarksneeze@reddit
If you died on the job they would send flowers and post your job opening. Guess which they do first?
OnAJourneyMan@reddit
I am a dispatcher. One of our drivers died. Only knew the guy a few months. Took several hours off work on a Monday to go to the funeral, pay my respects. Cooked a weeks worth of food for his wife and kids.
Not everywhere is like that.
TouristEquivalent181@reddit
Very kind of you.
snarksneeze@reddit
Corporations are exactly like that. Individuals inside the corporations might not conform, but the corporation will always be a heartless profit-focused machine that will eat anyone from the CEO down alive at a moment's notice.
OnAJourneyMan@reddit
Yeah, thatâs capitalism. At the end of the day, itâs just a job.
PrinceOfZzyzx@reddit
The flowers are a maybe at some carriers. In general they figure it was disloyal for the driver to die without two week notice. And even then they'll still put a mark on your dac.
EatLard@reddit
Theyâll drag your body out of the truck and put a new ass in the seat without even towing the truck away from the receiver.
Kathykat5959@reddit
This happened. We were hauling coal. Guy in front of me left. I left behind him. Guy behind me was tarping load and walked to get his ticket. We kept hollering for him on the cb. No answer. We get back to find out he dropped dead. A mechanic from the shop was brought in to go dump the truck. So yeah, his seat wasnât cold yet.
PrinceOfZzyzx@reddit
I've seen a few who didn't even fumigate or clean the truck prior to reassigning it.
Norsedragoon@reddit
The company I am working for atm would probably try and dock the pay of anyone who dies for failing to make scheduled loads, then send a single discount flower to the funeral with a bill for 2 dozen roses.
TDOTBRO@reddit
Also might be hard for this company to rehire fast so he might be losing on some bonuses
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
It's always been turn and burn.
BubbagonnaBub@reddit
If they're this upset its because you do your job well and bring them piece of mind.
TrapSquash@reddit
You just lost him his retention bonus. Cry me a river. Congrats on making your life better!
DepressedDragonBorn@reddit (OP)
Now I'm curious how much the bonus is and the retention percentage needed.
ChampionshipThin8916@reddit
If youâre a good dependable driver, those are rare at big companies. Dispatchers want at least a few guys they can depend on and give the less pressing stuff to the fuckups. If youâre one of only a few of his âgood driversâ, that could be why he doesnât want you to leave.

My company did that when I gave them weeks notice
I dont get how much of a pos and miserable u have to be to try and ruin someones cdl. I mean I dont do drugs and people should follow guidelines and all but thats just petty
legollama88@reddit
i am quitting my current gig soon and i canât believe what i am reading. but i also am not giving them a notice. not because theyâre a bad company just donât feel it is necessary. getting a way better job soon i hope anyways. when i told them iâm expecting a baby soon they handled it WAY better than this job did⌠they werenât all oh well you know youâre like a slave right.. we can give you 3 days off maximum no pay of course. i am not even asking a month!
MarmotWorldOrder@reddit
I got my first at my mega after cursing out a yard dog for waking me up at 4AM at a terminal.
DepressedDragonBorn@reddit (OP)
Hey, I'll welcome the extra off time
legollama88@reddit
remember companies wouldnât give you notice if youâre being let go. Business is business to me and should be for them too.
huuke@reddit
Maybe you do your job and he/she doesnât have to lose sleep over what/ where you are all the time. Itâs comforting to have someone that can do their job without holding their hand all the time. Idk, does this fit your description???
UncleFlip@reddit
He may get some sort of bonus tied to retention.
He's very likely getting his ass chewed out about it.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
The real question is, when will companies realize that they don't need dispatchers? Is this an AI job? For real. I feel like dispatchers cause more drivers to quit than.....
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
I'm always extra friendly to the worthless bitch ass dispatcher. They really think they're important. They really think like we can't figure out if giving the address how to get from here to there. How to navigate our own shit down the highway. Oh what would we do if we didn't have to tell them every time we had to take a shit? Oh, right, we would just take a shit. Then we would get back in our equipment and drive on.
Mystery_Chaser@reddit
Everybody knows this patches are the most angry, worthless, bitchy CRUNTS in the world. If I took every douche bag dispatcher personally, I would eat lead.
ud_frosty@reddit
Dispatchers get in trouble when the drivers leave as its their job to keep you there so it is seen as an inability for them to do their job properly kinda weird but I had it the same way when I left a company dude was real butthurt told me I would never work there again( was a shitty company that abused its drivers these mfs had me working in the middle of my 10 so I quit 1 week notice) they called offering me a job last month lol
Square_Barracuda_69@reddit
Had a boss that BEGGED and BEGGED me to stay, even giving me a measly $20 more a day to stay. I reluctantly stayed because I felt bad (long story). Anyway, I kept telling him I was getting burnt out and I wanted to demote myself to a lower position for well over a year because I couldn't handle all the stress of the job, especially for the money. Suddenly, after almost 2 years, he finds someone and then fires me 3 days later. New dude is green as fuck and has no idea what hes doing. Fuck these shitty bosses. Whole time I thought we were cool because of the shit we went through together but he only gives a shit about himself.
Top-Confidence4496@reddit
This is why you never accept the counter offer. They're always doing it to give them time to find your replacement
Square_Barracuda_69@reddit
I gave him the counter because I didnt think he'd give me the raise to do subpar work, and I didnt have a back up plan. Luckily I kinda sniffed it out before he fired me and got another job rather quickly with a nice 2 week vacation.
Ok_Bug_6470@reddit
Good employees make managers jobs easier. He makes money off of his drivers. If youâre a good one that he doesnât have to spend anytime with them you make him money. Bonus probably, but you go now heâll have to spend time trading a new driver and may have to dedicate ten hours a week that he used to have for other things if the new driver sucks. Or he wants to bang you. It happens. I had to leave a company for the latter.
funkeym0nkey@reddit
Theyâll be upset at anything that makes their job harder.
Top-Confidence4496@reddit
Like that's all it is. You just gave them more work. Now they gotta put up a job ad and do interviews and stuff. They're lazy
pchandler45@reddit
You're one of his good drivers, that's gonna be a hit to his wallet too if he can't replace you
stjhnstv@reddit
Dispatcher here. It sucks to lose a good driver, but itâs part of the deal. People come and go, trucking is a high turnover industry. That said, the only time I actually get upset over it is when somebody leaves without notice. I donât get why somebody would be mad at somebody for bettering themselves.
AcanthocephalaNew791@reddit
We can get fired without notice so what's the big deal of leaving without notice?
stjhnstv@reddit
If I terminate a driver, theyâve either done something SERIOUSLY wrong or received at least 3 write ups leading to the termination. Itâs never out of the blue.
J0nn_D03@reddit
Cause you're a proven good driver probably. Most new drivers have an accident or moving violation the first year they truck, you're a proven deal that they don't have to worry about fixing problems from as much.
I actually had this happen to me at the first place I worked too; dispatcher kept saying, "oh you'll be back, they always come back." Super weird lol
TLDR, you make their job less annoying, so it's annoying that you're leaving to them.
KrunschGK@reddit
At least you turned in a notice. I was on hometime with US Xpress, when I'd quit. I'd seen them strand far too many people for me to want to be the next one trying to get to Georgia from California.
Unusual-Associate174@reddit
I called cr England to tell them I quit while I was on the greyhound to Dallas for orientation with schneider 𤣠2 years later I get a 60 dollar check in the mail from a class action suit because cr England was illegally withholding driver pay.
Far-Maintenance3164@reddit
I know this was the worst decision you probably made
Unusual-Associate174@reddit
I ain't lying when I say the transition literally more than doubled my weekly gross. It was truly an awful decision. đ˘ đ after joing schneider I felt like a human being again. It was terrible.
Far-Maintenance3164@reddit
This is crazy because Iâve heard people at Schneider even leaders say yeah this company said this company sets you up for failure. What company really tries to baby trap you
Unusual-Associate174@reddit
They have very little tolerance for fuckery and very strict on the rules they have, but I worked family dollar for 2 years with them, I even backed into a delivery door and knocked it through the wall causing 5k in damages. But I was on time I was clean, my truck was clean. Never pulled over, never inspected, had good raport with my customers, all I got was a " dude, it was a straight line back how'd you hit it?" Laughed it off. I goaled twice and still hit it. But theu didn't even sit me down with safety. Just a brief 2 minute convo with manager
Unusual-Associate174@reddit
They hired me at .39 a mile with only 2 months of experience. Spent 4 weeks in training with schneider. Before they sent me on otr training with a trainer they asked if there was anything I wasnt comfortable with, I was honest af, told them I wasnt comfortable comfortable backing. The whole time I was with England I backed less than 10 times. They kept me for 5 more days had me working with a trainer and 1 other trainee, we backed for 6 hours a day every day. 90, blindside 90, 45, blindside 45, offset left and right, backing through alleys into acute angled docks. Honestly it was the best experience I've had with trucking company but the pay never really went up. And they paid me 100 bucks every day.
Far-Maintenance3164@reddit
WHATT YOU DOUBLED UR SALARY? u mustâve joined Schneider during the big sign on bonus. Iâve had friends leave Schneider for CR England, which I think they got 60 a mile, but had to unload.. iâve heard new hires at swift get paid 60 a mile or 62 . Bro Schneider starts them off at like 36 a mile.
Unusual-Associate174@reddit
Tbf this was more than 10 years ago. I got my cdl through cr England, after going through 60 days of schooling and training to get my cdl, they sent me out with a trainer for 2 more months making 65 a day. After that they wanted me to team for 30k miles at .12 a mile. I said no got hired at schneider at .39 cents a mile.
Ninja-Storyteller@reddit
They were fine about my 2 week notice, but they did have me strand my co-worker whe he got drunk and cussed out dispatch. It was his fault, but he was over 1,000 miles from home. :/
MiguelSTG@reddit
You made him a lot of money. Maybe you drive hard, willing to push or break legal limits, take lower pay for a load without asking too many questions, not really sure. But either way you made him money, and now he's mad.
GoodGoodGoody@reddit
You think the dispatcher is âmaking a lot of moneyâ?!
All the dispatchers Iâve seen were mentally broken down or otherwise sick (often obese) exdrivers just answering phones and going home at the end if the shift.
MiguelSTG@reddit
I should have said a lot of the percentage the dispatcher was making.
John9250@reddit
Some dispatchers get paid on commission. So you leaving hurts their pockets.
Far-Maintenance3164@reddit
Dispatcher is a legal pimp, if his hoes arenât working. Heâs not making bonus or commission. If a hoe was good at what they do but thinks they can find better. Id be mad too⌠this about me
Far-Maintenance3164@reddit
Which is odd at my company they rotate us like whores every few months, which I donât know if thatâs a company thing or just the thing they do at there center. I say itâs because I had an issue to wear. My team partner left off without a notice so I got stuck where he was located. I was supposed to start with a new dispatcher leader. Funny thing my old one told me that she pretty much gave me back to him. So as I took that as, so she can deliberately reject me if she thinks itâs too much BS. I was already at bad foot with her because she becomes a smart ass at sometimes but if Iâm in need those motherfuckers, take their sweet business day
Cool_Thanks_4934@reddit
Me and my dispatcher get along great. I would be disappointed if she wasnât sorry to see me go.
seem92@reddit
This is the time where they put things on your record
DepressedDragonBorn@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that would be annoying, considering my record is clean.
Oh well, all I can do is wait and see, on the brightside based on my current loads destruction I think they might be trying to get me to a terminal this week.
FrogMac@reddit
Just be cautions on the time you have left. Just make sure you have proof (emails, texts) of the plans made to turn in the truck so they canât lie that you abandoned the truck or denied loads. Take lots of pictures of the truck when you clean it out.
DepressedDragonBorn@reddit (OP)
Already done, I initially just called to let them know, a few hours later it occurred to me I should send a text too so I could screenshot it.

My first dispatcher got uppity after I had to schedule hometime the week after coming off hometime. I told them something popped up (it was a rescheduled dentist appointment). I didn't elaborate because all they need to know is that I need to be at a certain location at a certain time. It doesn't matter if it's for a doctor's visit, furry convention, or job interview. You did the right thing by ignoring prying questions.
FrogMac@reddit
I mean, if you let me know you were going to a Furry Convention, I dunno what I would do đ¤Ł

this! OP is his Dispatcher's Favorite.
CaseyJones37@reddit
Doesn't even have to be the favorite if he's making him money and not causing problems.
Lopsided-Walk-7743@reddit
My dispatcher lead was the same and I did feel bad. I don't LIKE to leave places high and dry even if Schneider is a mega lol, because they were actually good to me. The unfortunate thing is that this local position opened up while I was a week into my route and I'd be coming back in a week. They said they would hold the position for me because I wanted to interview and see the place in person.
Unfortunately they could only hold it for a week and going out for another week or two would have filled the position so I said see you later to schneider.
Ended up positive for me because I get to be in my own bed with my wife and I make more with less work but homeboy team lead called me up really angry telling me I will never be considered for Schneider again if I apply.
Famous-Eggplant8451@reddit
It's usually a money per load issue or amount of drivers he has, they make money off both.
On the other hand if you are his best driver that's probably the issue. I had a local job and took care of everything and when I got injured my boss was pissed, not because of anything else other than now they had to handle everything because I was no longer there to do it for them.
StonedTrucker@reddit
Maybe youre better than most of the drivers he can find for the job and doesnt want to see you leave
prospect151@reddit
In my experience, some people in management really care about their employees/companies and kinda take it personal when good people leave.
On the other hand, some companies are basically mini cults and foster an attitude of ownership over their employees and view someone leaving as a betrayal. This is a classic cult control method.
Sounds like your job might be the former. :)
SuspectOk2931@reddit

Sometimes dispatchers are paid bonuses the more loads they get each month/week, and its possible you were running really efficiently and making him good money
PraetorianHawke@reddit
May have his incentive bonus tied to retention of drivers. I did when I n was in dispatch. I could hit every load and safety metric but if too many drivers quit, regsrdless of how many onboarded, I lost everything.

If you was putting in the work and actually stood out work wise then I could see why one would he upset lol
My old boss was the same. I was putting in lots of hours and covering tons of shifts. I did anything and everything aslong as I was getting paid. Needless to say he really liked having me around. Fortunately tho the day came when a better gig popped up that paid alot more. Obviously I went and put in my notice. Dude was nice and genuinely tried to sweeten the gig by saying he'd give me a raise and anything to keep me from leaving as I made that much of an impact on his business lol.
I ended up leaving still but he always told me if I wanted to come back he'd hire me on the spot and that I was one of the best.
daemonescanem@reddit
I had a boss (he was the city manager who didnt drive) who took it personally, when a driver called off work. Nvm he didnt ever have to cover a shift.
He once tried to fire a guy for no-call no-show who was actually in ICU. This guy had worked with appendicitis, & his appendix actually ruptured as the were taking it out. Dude was in rough shape.
He did fire a shift supervisor for trading a day with another supervisor, because his pops was sick with prostate cancer. Shift trading was allowed, the other guy didnt show up to cover for him.

Your dispatcher should have handled it better. the correct response is something along the lines of "I wish you nothing but success in whatever you do next, and it's been a pleasure working with you."
That said, it sucks to lose good drivers. Maybe they're just well trained/experienced and can handle any load. Maybe they're the kind of driver who communicates well and goes the extra mile to keep things going smoothly. Maybe they're the kind of driver who doesn't complain unnecessarily. Maybe they're the kind of driver that the dispatcher actually enjoys talking to.
If I had to describe a good driver in one sentence, a good driver is someone I don't have to worry about. If he says he's going to be somewhere by a certain time and I don't get a call from him, he'll be there. If he has a breakdown or gets screwed by a traffic jam, he'll let me know. I don't have to check his location to make sure that he woke up on time.
Matlovestruck@reddit
Dispatchers get paid on the loads they book for their drivers. When you leave, he's not losing a coworker, he's losing revenue. That's why he's "hurt." Don't overthink it, you gave notice which is more than most do in this industry. Go get that local gig and enjoy being home every night.
DirtyDan2024@reddit
If you're a good driver they don't want to lose you. It's hard to find good help now-a-days. Dispatcher is probably upset that they're having to go back through the process of teaching a new driver the route and info. Not your problem for much longer, and no reason to get upset or overthink it. Finish out your few more days and remember it as a decent job. Good luck with your new job!
Waisted-Desert@reddit
If you're one of their top performers then their dispatch board metrics will drop. That could mean lost bonuses and revenue for him personally.
The drivers that are among those that "quit everyday" are usually the ones dragging their metrics down anyway, so it's not a big deal or could even be a good thing that they quit.
Lopsided-Move6309@reddit
If you're pretty reliable they don't want to lose you, my dispatcher was pissed after I left for a local position after a year 1/2. She said I couldn't come back, but weeks later called to check on me and see if I wanted to come backđđ. I knew she was just frustrated that a good employee was leaving and needed to cool down. But it was local and day shift, no way I was coming back to regional and night shift with crappy days off.
getinloserufo@reddit
Imagine, If you will, you had a sentient money tree. Then one day it just up and said "Im gonna be gone in two weeks, see ya"

They didnt deserve the notice. No company does. They're mad you found something better than them.
DepressedDragonBorn@reddit (OP)
I get this but that's the company, why does the dispatcher care, he'll just get another driver on his group.
hoppertn@reddit
So Iâll just say itâs either because you are reliable or take the shit he shovels without complaining and now he has do more work with a new driver OR he could actually be a good guy but saying itâs a mistake to leave leads me to my first assumption.
beastybrotha@reddit
I mean take it as a compliment? He probably liked you as a driver and maybe a person. Whats so difficult to comprehend lol
PrivatePilot9@reddit
Actually, in many areas, giving notice is legally required. Be careful with what advice you offer to the contrary, without mutual consent just quitting on the spot and walking away without notice can actually get an employee in hot water legally if the company wants to pursue it.
DepressedDragonBorn@reddit (OP)
I did hear about this, I don't believe that's the case for my area and have talked to a few previous employees who didn't give any or little notice.
fistfullofpubes@reddit
Don't listen to the other poster, they just pulled that out of their ass. You have no legal obligation to give notice when you quit in America.
fistfullofpubes@reddit
If you're talking about the United States, then this is straight up just false.
Nowhere in the US are you legally obligated (as a w2 employee) to give notice when you quit.
You cannot get into hot water, and the company has no recourse to pursue anything.
