Trying to find this paint

Hey everyone, I've been trying to get a specific candy color for quite some time now.
However because I'm located in Europe I can't use "House of Kolor" which would've been my preferred brand to use but it seems like they no longer ship to europe.
Would anyone have a paint that that they have used before that get the same effect.
I'm trying to get a very brilliant red color which turns very dark in the shadows (nearly black), Thanks in advance everyone.
Pictures included are just some examples of the types of candy red I'd love to use
nstyred@reddit
Try House of Colors out of California
techstyles@reddit
Looks like candy apple to me
illbeyourdrunkle@reddit
Any candy can do this if you apply the right base underneath. Use a silver or steel colored base, then apply medium coats of candy apple red until you get the effect you want. A job like that says more about the guy doing the spraying than the materials used really. I sell automotive paint to Honda as a living.
rensole@reddit (OP)
Thank you for that feedback, Just getting lost and cant see the forest for the trees at this point. So many different candy colors, so many different bases and everyone gives a different effect. I'll go to a store in country tomorrow to get some recommendations as to whats the best way to do this.
IronSlanginRed@reddit
You're going to want to find a high end custom car painter. Getting this quality of paint is not DIY. It involves a ton of skill and a regular bodyshop would be unlikely to be able to replicate it.
TNShadetree@reddit
Maybe it's not possible for you to DIY, but if you've done a few metallic or pearl paint jobs, doing a candy job is certainly within reach.
More steps involved, yes many. More expensive materials, yes. Few ways to correct mistakes, yeah, the worst part.
But it isn't magic and can be accomplished in an average garage with a few precautions. Youtube has multiple videos as examples.
rensole@reddit (OP)
Yeah I have a fair bit of experience when it comes to metallics and pearls. Did scooter/motor stuff for years and airbrushed custom stuff in trunks/hoods. So not a novice but nowhere near a pro. I got some paints today and I’m just gonna shoot some test pieces
East-Teacher8542@reddit
Any competent automotive painter can do candy colors, some factory paint jobs are 4 stages even these days and some colors come from the factory as a candy.
Burban72@reddit
This is correct. I used to work for a brand that was manufactured by a European company. This look can be achieved by just about any brand, it just requires someone who understands the color theory.
House of Kolor keeps getting noted because they catered to a custom paint audience. Most brands are for the repair business, and the top ones sell directly to the manufacturers. The pigments are made of the same materials, though.
As others have said, in custom work it is called a candy, but in regular terms it will be called a three stage or four stage paint. Hopefully that helps when you go to the store.

So a slight update regarding this, I want to a paint store that carries a lot of different candy colors and concentrates and explained what I’m looking for. They told me to basically try some of these out. From the brand “Inspire” I got the following colors
Base coats: base silver (medium grain) Base metallic grey Base metallic black
Candy colors: Cherry red Ruby red Deep red Blueberry (this is a blue color that caught me by surprise and just want to test it out)
I also got some Mazda 46v and a 2k clearcoat.
I’ll be working on getting something I can sand down and paint and will post results (how many coats and mix recipes I used once I can, so hopefully the next one can also get better more info).
Also the reason I got the black metallic one is because of a snippet I found on a website link it’s in Dutch but use translate It says to use the “panther black pearl” to get a color shift like the one I’m looking for. Unfortunately the shop I visited did not have this brand but another one I’ll visit tomorrow does and I’ll test those as well

May bebthisbcan help :
It looksbvery similar to " rouge lucifer " , official color proposed Peugeot in France. The primer is blue.
I think there is a great number of varnish coats.
FakeAssRicky@reddit
Would Mazda soul red crystal (code 46V) be close? Since it's a factory color it should be easy enough to find anywhere.
In person it's an incredible color. It might not hit the depth of black in shadows that a proper candy would, though.
rensole@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the recommendation Ricky! I already had that one on a short list, because to be honest it looks like an amazing color just not sure it will reach the same depth, just as you said, however I'll be doing a test piece with multiple colors to see which is the one I like
Burban72@reddit
This is where a custom painter could help. With a color like that, a small change in the base color could get you to the look you want. As others have said, using a silver vs a gold vs a green under a red base. They're going to give you different looks, particularly on the "cast" angle.
Lucreth2@reddit
It won't but it will get you 80% of the way for 1/10th the cost. It's up to you whether you want a $50k paintjob
punkassjim@reddit
Is this the only red of this type that Mazda makes? I've seen some Mazdas CX's in person that have shocking range from highlight to shadow, but sometimes they really pop and sometimes they don't. I figure it's just different daylight conditions (sunny, overcast, etc), but wasn't sure if I was just seeing different paint codes.
Rufian@reddit
There is more than one. Even MX-5 has two options (Soul Red Metallic came before Soul Red Crystal Metallic)
punkassjim@reddit
Fascinating! Though, I'd imagine the fact that it's a 3-stage paint will mean it's not exactly cheap to get it done right. But I honestly have very little clue about paint work.
Rufian@reddit
That's how it's done: https://novol.com/spectral/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2024/09/EN_Karta_procesu_MAZDA_46V_WAVE_2.0_door_Z.pdf
LilFunyunz@reddit
That's such a good color tbh. Way cheaper than anything else op is going to find and gets him most of the way there.

Thats what I was thinking too

Kandy Brandywine
rensole@reddit (OP)
Thank you, But unfortunately as I said HOK doesn't deliver in Europe unfortunately. thats why I'm searching for an alternative
Duces_Wild3644@reddit
Looks pretty close to Mazdas Soul Red Crystal. That would probably get you pretty close
Local_Bobcat_2000@reddit
Saw an old Mustang in this color in person. No photo will ever do that beautiful color justice.
rensole@reddit (OP)
I've seen one at a show as a kid and now that I'm rebuilding my own 69 mach 1 mustang I honestly want the same red.
The HOK paints look more amazing irl than any other paint I've seen in my life
EC_CO@reddit
Have you seen and considered Mazdas Soul Crystal Red? It is absolutely stunning and one of my favorite metallic reds. Since it's a factory color, you may be able to source it in europe. It is a multi-layer paint job though and needs the right person to lay it down
jbjhill@reddit
That’s one of the nicest factory colors I’ve seen.
rensole@reddit (OP)
Yes I have! I will be going into a local paint shop tomorrow to get some cans of different types (including 46V) to test and see which one comes closest to it
coyoteatemyhomework@reddit
Ford "lucid red pearl" is close to soul red but just a bit darker and deeper red. Hard to capture the true color in a pic of my sons caddy I did a couple of years ago
ZupaFrosty@reddit
Your son is a baller, wow. Beautiful car.
coyoteatemyhomework@reddit
Thanks. :)
rensole@reddit (OP)
Thank you for recommending that one I didn’t even know of this one till now, will be adding it to my list of colors to test!
coyoteatemyhomework@reddit
Ford has a few, like ruby red, lazer red, and lucid red are all in the same red pearl family
EC_CO@reddit
You won't have the darkness in the shadows effect you were talking about, but damn it is an absolutely stunning color when done right. I'm finishing the restoration on an old barracuda now, if I wasn't a stickler for keeping its color original I would absolutely have SCR laid down
rensole@reddit (OP)
Yeah I’m kindof at the point where I’m going to switch out the panels in the next months and the pen color was not my cup of thee but im switching between gungray metallic, mono grey, red candy and blue candy. Pic is where I’m at now
masterventris@reddit
If you want a good blue then Peugeot have an excellent one called Vertigo Blue I believe. Second only to Lexus Structural Blue.
EC_CO@reddit
Please no grays, that one deserves to POP. Gray is for boring BMWs/Mercedes.
unlimitednightsky@reddit
Try Alsa Corp, they sell candy concentrates. Bloody red may be close. You would have to test it over different gold basecoats to get a closer match

Go to a reputable paint shop and ask for a dark candy red, the trick in this kinda paint is that theres probably 4 to 5 layers of candy red over the base silver, someone suggested a single coat of candy green then cover it with candy red, that should do the trick real good as it will darken it alot.
CustomCarNerd@reddit
Ford paint code E9 is a Tri-coat very similar to this.
laylowlazlo@reddit
Surely there’s a US based service who could forward it to you, no?

Virgin Airlines engine cowling red.
telmesumpm@reddit
UreChem makes a really nice version of this. Pick your base then use their Red Wine tint coat over it. Very close if not right on.
who_even_cares35@reddit
Look for red with a flop. The flop is the reason you see it fade red to black from an angle. Harley Davidson was the kind of this sort of thing.
detroitragace@reddit
HoK Kandy red over a gold or silver base.

Lost-n-Space@reddit
I searched for House of Kolor Europe and found European retailers for HoK. One in Spain, one supposedly in the UK, but the web address ended with .hu
Wiseguy_7@reddit
Thought this was automation for a second
KizashiKaze@reddit
If you can't find it, Mazda's soul red crystal does not disappoint as a secondary option
Lucreth2@reddit
This is above my pay grade but HoK might be able to give recommendations. Otherwise I'd check with high end custom shops. Anyone who is qualified to lay down this level of color should know plenty of suppliers for it.
Awwwmann@reddit
The trick to a deep red candy is to prep/prime/seal and put down your metallic base. Here is the trick to a deep red candy..
Your first coat should be candy green and then layer your red to the desired color.
gospdrcr000@reddit
KizashiKaze@reddit
Its true, I saw it done once before. At first I thought i was being trolled but afterwards, it really does make sense. Pretty cool stuff
Lucreth2@reddit
He's not wrong. Candy reds generally start with a completely different base. I think I've heard gold used frequently?
brounchman@reddit
I had my Camaro repainted 20+ years ago with HOK paint. The base was metallic gold, but a really muddy color that would look awful on its own. Several layers of candy/clear over it and you can see only subtle glimmers of gold in the right light.
LoudMouse327@reddit
When I was playing around with painting cars, doing a lot of Watson style stuff, lace, panel jobs, etc. I learned to use silver if you want to cool the color down, gold if you want to warm it up, if that makes sense. I also learned that the more coats you do, the less it will mottle or tiger stripe.
But if OP just wants the basic effect of a candy job without as much fuss, HoK has a line that I believe is called CandEZ or something like that. It's a base-clear rather than a true candy, but guves the illusion of a candy paint job. Similar to what OEMs are doing now to approximate candy paint in late model cars (that great red that Mazda came out with a few years ago comes to mind).
gospdrcr000@reddit
Interesting, I don't paint cars. It is interesting to hear a minute detail like that
Lucreth2@reddit
Absolutely. It's so fascinating that I actually work tangential to the industry.
But yes the "final color" is determined by how manu very very thin layers of color you put over the base, and the base is where the depth and fluidity come from. The rest is almost like tinting.
OEMs also use "tint coats", although only a layer or two and frequently a tinted clear. Still, you can tell which colors are "tri-coats" or tint coats because they're much more vibrant than normal OEM colors.... And have an upcharge lol.
snoops-spoons@reddit
I did work like that 20+ years ago that would have been 10-20 coats of lacquer each one polished.
I once out 27 coats on a 49 mercury next time I get to storage I'm getting the pictures. Looked very similar to this.
Lucreth2@reddit
Incredible.. how do you handle corners and edges? I feel like they'd begin to soften or fatten with that many layers.
Callum-W@reddit
Volkswagen Amaryllis red LA3S is similar. Or Mazda soul red
ParanoidPinkGear@reddit
If you can get PPG products in your area, Obsession from the Crystallance/Vibrance collection is the effect you’re going for, I think. https://sketchsink.com/collection Here’s a website with more fun colors in the same vein.

Mazda Soul Crystal Red is close but a bit brighter... it's the closest OE color IMO.
exer881@reddit

Candy apple Coca Cola
TheWorldNeedsDornep@reddit

Dense-Experience6033@reddit
Looks like a proper candy apple red, either house of kolor or the PPG premium line
tropical_cowboy@reddit
That is candy apple red over silver.
There is also Kandy base coat that looks similar and is easier to spray.
I am an award winning custom painter with 28 years of experience. I spray paint jobs like this all the time.
No one should attempt this without PLENTY of experience and training. The time involved just to spray the materials and coats is like 12-15 hours. It will cost 3-4k in material costs also. You cannot buy cheap candy it will immediately fail. You cannot cocktail candy paint and use cheap clear coat, you have to use the full system. You cannot even change the reducer.
A paint job like this starts at about 35,000.00 without bodywork, prep, disassembly and more.
Dogpeppers@reddit
There are wraps that are candy red shift black..I think matte red shift black is amazing.

This is candy paint and is 100% the painter. You could have all the color codes but it will take a special painter to do. Oh and $$!! This paint job probably costs as much as your current car. P.S. You should not be looking for a paint code, you need to be looking for a painter that can do candy. Make sure you’ve seen more than one car they have done, lots of painters brag they can do candy but can’t.

Any place that mixes and sells PPG paints should be able to get you all the stuff you need. Just a heads up, this is a 5 stage paintjob meaning primer, silver/chrome base, darker red tint, lighter red tint and lastly clear. A time consuming and expensive job but the results are worth it. Source, used to work at a car/industrial paint store.

The colour is just the tint on the 2nd coat. Also HOL sells the flake and glitter etc in dry form. I assuming if you give them a shout they will be able to help at least with the flake.
