No no actually this is exactly what I expected

Again???
EnvironmentChance991@reddit
We need to go back to private security like the rest of the world already uses.
SpecialExpert8946@reddit
Honestly nothing gets cheaper or better when put to private companies anymore. That used to be kind of true but It’ll just be turned into some subscription service or we’ll just get gouged like every other industry we’ve said “it’ll be better if the government isn’t involved.”
LearningT0Fly@reddit
The rest of the world has it figured out. Airports pay for their own security, funded by tickets. And it works.
Whereas here, our government takes a tax on tickets and instead of giving it to the airport, either uses it for shit that tax wasn't intended for in the first place or just holds that money hostage whenever they decide to 'shut down'.
Idk about you but I know which system I think works better.
SpecialExpert8946@reddit
You’re overlooking the part where it would be American companies securing our airports. That’s very different than how other countries do it. See here it seems our companies exist to take as much as humanly possible. They haven’t made anything better in decades.
Rupperrt@reddit
Could be hardly any worse than this. Your security isn’t being paid, Air traffic controllers are working 6 days a week, some for many years in a row without a free weekend, being treated worse than sweatshop workers in Asia.
Interestingly the worst paid and treated ATC in the world is in countries where they’re civil servants (I can name some more examples apart from US), often because they’re bound to general civil service rules (that don’t work well for shift work), wage developments (which in times of governments tightening belts generally are often stagnant at best) and can’t have proper work action rights.
LearningT0Fly@reddit
Acting as if the ambition of 'take as much as humanely possible' is unique to private entities and not, you know, the government that shuts down twice a year and brings airport security to a standstill, is quite a take.
SpecialExpert8946@reddit
Also how is pointing out the government NOT funding it and example of them taking as much as humanly possible?
LearningT0Fly@reddit
Because they’ve collected the money, which is a tax on tickets (September 11 Security Fee) that when passed was explicitly meant to fund TSA. But government being government said fuck that and just diverts most of those funds to other shit now.
I think it’s a great example of them taking as much as humanly possible.
SpecialExpert8946@reddit
Ok that’s fair. I see where you’re coming from on that one.

SpecialExpert8946@reddit
The entire post is political dummy.
SpecialExpert8946@reddit
Yeah, we’re kinda screwed either way. The government will just line their pockets with the tax money we give them and have the actual department run on a shoestring budget.
A private company will bend us over and then scrape all our data to also sell and double dip. Did something get stolen at the airport? I hope you have your platinum security plus code in order for us to assist you. Otherwise youll have to physically go to the customer service desk in anchorage to file a claim.
quesoandcats@reddit
That wouldn’t fix the issue, because the money for private security contracts would still have to be appropriated and funded by Congress.
Rupperrt@reddit
No they could be funded by fees like now, but without those fees getting blocked or used elsewhere.
BadahBingBadahBoom@reddit
I think by 'rest of the world' they were referring to the model where the government doesn't pay for airport security, the airport does.
Like other countries Congress would simply stipulate the minimum requirements to maintain security.
FatSteveWasted9@reddit
All the security you can personally afford, just like the lords intended

Don’t know why this is being downvoted. No other country in the world regularly runs into this issue where their security ~~theater~~ agents find themselves in position to work without pay. Especially since the funding mechanism here is the same as everywher else- a tax on the ticket. So the money is there, it’s just held hostage when congress gets into their regularly scheduled dick measuring contest.
agha0013@reddit
which will not do their job when the contract isn't paid out by government because they are fucking with they money.
private security contractors still need to get paid to do the job, they'd walk off the job even faster than the federally employed screeners
BadahBingBadahBoom@reddit
Don't know why this is getting so many downvotes. This model has shown to be much more effective in other similar countries without the risk of periodic shutdowns or other conflicts of interest.
Europe seems to be managing just fine and lord knows TSA's efficacy at screening is essentially not fit for function.
euph_22@reddit
Or just have a government that is even minimally functional.
hereandthere_nowhere@reddit
Republicans cant govern. Now downvote me. But the truth will remain.
mamandemanqu3@reddit
Ok downvoted.
Totally agree though.
Loan-Pickle@reddit
TSA is funded by a fee charged on every airline ticket. So where did the money go?
phryan@reddit
The $200M check that Noem wrote to friends of hers to make 'ads'.
CorrectCombination11@reddit (OP)
I believe lawmakers re-appropriated it to go fund something else. https://www.npr.org/2026/03/26/nx-s1-5761359/tracing-the-tax-thats-supposed-to-fund-tsa
popups4life@reddit
Even if they didn't, they still have to appropriate the funds to go to DHS for TSA in (what should be...) the annual budget.
NormanQuacks345@reddit
Ah perfect.
StupidSexyFlagella@reddit
Cunts tbh. In any other situation, the people / organization diverting funds would still be responsible for the intended funding. I can’t get more money for my car because I used my auto loan funds on a new pool.
Loan-Pickle@reddit
Of course they did.
Imaginary_Storm_4048@reddit
That is my what annoys me the most. We are paying for TSA and ATC with every ticket we purchase. Their funding should be separated from government funding so that they’re not expected to go without a paycheck every time we come up against another government shutdown.
The problem is Washington knows it’s their biggest bargaining chip and it always works to strong arm the other side into an agreement regardless of who is in power. We should not be using TSA and the FAA(ATC) as bargaining chips while holding the airlines hostage in the process. It should really be an independent agency funded directly from the fees collected similar to how the postal service is set up, then they would be a little more insulated from these funding battles.
(Hopefully that comment doesn’t get me banned)
Nice_Classroom_6459@reddit
FWIW the Republican Supreme Court has banned "independent agencies" unless they are privately owned and have a 100+ year history of independence (ie, the Federal Reserve).

A tale as old as time at this point
separation_of_powers@reddit
The best option remains - just don’t travel to the US.
If they can not work out to fund this, it is not worth running the risk.
ForsakenRacism@reddit
Then pass the senate bill that includes the ATC raise already
Te_Luftwaffle@reddit
The problem is that people shoehorn unrelated things into every budget bill until you can't pass anything. Didn't you hear that the good guys can't pass the "continue finding orphanages" bill because the bad guys added funding for the puppy death camps?
There needs to be a rule where they have to pass a budget that pays the bills (salaries, operating costs, etc.) and leaves an amount of discretionary spending that they can argue about later.
Darth19Vader77@reddit
Best they can do is sit on their ass until they get another vacation and it starts to affect them and then they'll kick the can down road again
rhodesman@reddit
At this point I'm not sure what will happen first -- the can being kicked so far that it's no longer a can but just a lump of mangled metal or the road ending and the can falling off the cliff into oblivion.
Carribean-Diver@reddit
All this because Republicans can't agree that ICE agents should be accountable for their actions.
jello_sweaters@reddit
I sure do love permanent-crisis mode!
SpecialExpert8946@reddit
That’ll happen when people misuse our system against us.

Well that's one way of addressing the jet fuel shortage.
