MagCatRed@reddit
Just the idea of leaving something on an active stove for am extended period of time seems wild to me.
FishingLittle3900@reddit
You're not wrong. But as a chef myself I've done it once. Almost lost a house
munkspunks@reddit
how? lmao
FishingLittle3900@reddit
Had a farm and its embarrassing now that I think about it I dont feel like telling.
But I was frying a quick chicken patty when the neighbor had an emergency so I bolted out the door to help. Came back to a house full of smoke and a little flames on my cabinets. And a fry pot with no oil in it but a hockey puck.
I immediately smacked the flames out with my hands and opened all the doors and windows. My birds were about passed out and dogs just like wtf dad
Luckily the day was windy and smoke cleared within seconds. Looked way worse than it was. Now the place has some steel Geneva cabinets and a nice viking range and fridge. It was a lesson I guess I needed to learn. But what a stupid. Stupid move. Ill never walk away from the fry pot
munkspunks@reddit
did you forget the oil?
FishingLittle3900@reddit
No it caught fire and disappeared i guess. But it was in there when I started
munkspunks@reddit
oh i gotcha, it burned off, glad everything turned out okay
Psychological-Dig-29@reddit
Right. What the hell is up with Redditors, why am I constantly seeing posts where people forgot about the food they're actively cooking?!
It doesn't take long, stand there while it cooks and then turn off the stove when it's finished before going and doing other activities.
QueezyF@reddit
People that do this shit is why I see apartment fires on the local news every few months.
TheUlfheddin@reddit
Reminds me of the guy who was simmering something and left his apartment to walk to a nearby store, witnessed an assault and reported it, and police wouldn't let him leave the crime scene.
ACcbe1986@reddit
Can cops hold you against your will if you're just an eyewitness?
My first thought is no, but I'm not a lawyer.
DoctorJJWho@reddit
Regardless of the answer, there are cops who will still “detain” (arrest) you if you try to walk away and deal with the (most likely nonexistent) consequences later. So your stove is still on, and potentially for even longer.
ACcbe1986@reddit
Cops will do whatever. We know that.
I want to know if they have that kind of authority in that situation.
TheUlfheddin@reddit
I could be remembering the story wrong but that's the rough cut of it.
ACcbe1986@reddit
I get it. It just got me wondering.
WrestleBox@reddit
Just had one in my building last month. Thankfully I was out of town. Fire department sprayed a ton of water and a bunch of my neighbors got flooded.
My unit was fine.
Lanky_Score7414@reddit
So I am disabled, I can't stand for longer than 30 mins so what I do is I turn on the stove, but I go to my room and put a timer, I also walk to check, standing there as food is being made isn't really an option for me.
The only food I've forgotten that I can remember was some leftover lasagna I put in the microwave and forgot about it for like 3 hours because I got surprise called. When I saw it I just heated it again and ate it then lol.
But even if I forgot about my stove I have like an oven guard thing, it's annoying as hell because it beeps if your stove is on but I think mine is just busted, anyway it beeps 3 times and if it doesn't get turned off it will disable the cable to my oven, it will also disable it if it feels the stove is hot but sees nothing.
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
That seems like a stunningly poor use of time. If you are boiling some potatoes do you just stand there for 25 minutes while they cook? What the hell do you do if you’re making a stew?
Sure, don’t forget that you’re cooking something but the idea that you must sit and watch every boiling pot is insane.
MagCatRed@reddit
I have music or a podcast playing. I do dishes, chop the rest of the ingridents (because who's eating just boiled potatoes) clean the kitchen, doom scroll.
Overall I time my cooking so that I'm doing something always. If something has to boil I do that first and then work on the rest of my ingridents or just clean.
munkspunks@reddit
yeah why go sit in your yard on a nice night thats probably within eyeshot of the kitchen when you could stand around and doomscroll?
fkn reddit man..
Weird_duud@reddit
I guess this post should explain the "why"
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
Sure, I often do that but sometimes the cooking time is longer than the time it takes to do that other stuff.
Leaving something cooking without being stood next to it is incredibly normal.
Character-Parfait-42@reddit
A chuck roast is a prime example, the meat goes in the oven for 4 hours.
The steps taken after it goes in the oven are to:
cut up carrots, celery, potatoes, and whatever other veggies (onions already in the oven with the roast, so that had to be done already) and add them to after 2 hours.
Dirty dishes are a single knife, the BBQ fork, and the cutting board.
There’s another 75-90 minutes before I chuck the veggies in, and another 2 hours after that before it’s done (during which I can wash the bowl the veggies sat in before getting thrown in the oven).
It doesn’t take me over 3 hours to wash 4 things, wipe down the counters, and cut veggies. I’m gonna wander off… but I’m also gonna set an alarm on my phone.
MagCatRed@reddit
Even when I make chili or a stew that swimmers for hours I check on it frequently. Being so absent minded that you burn your food or worse is just a consequence of being lazy.
Bone_Wh33l@reddit
It’s not really laziness, that would be knowing you’ve got something cooking and choosing not to stop it from burning. Sometimes you’re just away from the stove longer than you intend to and could be caused by any number of reasons
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
Yeah, I’m obviously not proposing you stick it on the heat and then pretend it doesn’t exist for the next few hours.
Occasionally people get distracted, it’s hardly wild!
Express-Ad1248@reddit
I eat them with curd, so I just boil potatoes basically
Jealous_Chocolate_43@reddit
Put a timer on. Use a pressure cooker. Anything really
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
Sure. Or just remember to check as and when. Millions of people manage just fine doing that every day and have done forever.
Psychological-Dig-29@reddit
"a stunningly poor use of time" Jesus Christ lmao
What are you, out curing cancer in the 10 minutes it takes to boil sausages?
If I'm boiling potatoes for 25 minutes then during that time I'm still in the kitchen prepping other things for dinner as well.
If I'm making a stew or slow cooking something for hours, it's on a very low heat and I will stay nearby so I can keep an eye on everything and make sure it's cooking properly.
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
So what you are saying is that you do not, in fact, just stand there until it’s cooked. So a bit weird to express incredulity that other people also don’t.
Psychological-Dig-29@reddit
Go ahead and reread what I wrote originally. Take your time.
"It doesn't take long" is very clearly directed at stovetop cooks that are short like the one OP posted or many of the other burnt posts on Reddit where people throw something on the stove that takes a few minutes max then immediately walk out of the room or out of the house and forget all about the food on the stove.
How am I having to explain this? I assume you're one of those Americans that got their education in the no child Left behind plan
munkspunks@reddit
yeah i get it the telly told you to never leave a stove unattended and you're all so psychotically obedient you'll argue on the internet about it
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
Because there is also nothing particularly weird about walking out the room for something that doesn’t take that long. Like 10 minutes? I’m not going to stand there and watch the whole time unless I have other stuff to do in the kitchen. And obviously I’m also very unlikely to forget about it in that time. Apologies for not knowing that “actively cooking” apparently means “cooking things that take up to an unspecified duration”.
Like yeah, obviously it’s not ideal to forget about it or get distracted but shit happens sometimes. There’s nothing weird about not being in the room as something cooks.
And sorry, not even American.
chronically_varelse@reddit
Sorry about your downvotes and the troll.
You're making very valid points. I think a few people got turned around looking for LinkedIn.
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
Sometimes you just get unlucky.
chronically_varelse@reddit
Very true. Sometimes even on the same post, making the same kind of point, saying the same kind of thing but on two different comments threads- I will get a totally different reaction lol.
It's all about which things people read and algorithms and blah blah and none of that is things I should generally take personally.
Though I actually do love it when I get a really thoughtful response that truly does broaden my world. It does happen sometimes. But I am old so 🤷
Sargash@reddit
You'd make a great american
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
What? Are they particularly known for their ability to do other things while their food is cooking?
Sargash@reddit
Ya man.
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
Then sure.
anniecoleptic@reddit
25 minutes to boil potatoes?? they'll have disintegrated by that point
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
Depends how you cut them, what potatoes and what you are using them for.
pantry-pisser@reddit
I heartily disagree.
Leaving an unattended burner invites the risk of dying in a house fire, which would allow me to finally leave this bullshit they call "life".
Character-Parfait-42@reddit
I mean if it’s a roast that’s spending 4 hours in the oven I get it. As long as you don’t completely forget about it not much can go wrong.
But for shit’s sake set a timer on your phone. It takes like 30 seconds.
Princekyle7@reddit
I'd like to think there were influences involved.
stevencastle@reddit
That's only happened to me once and it was when I was very young and put a pizza in the oven and completely forgot about it and it turned to charcoal. Since then I always set a timer to remind me, I hate to waste food.
Sargash@reddit
His stove probably has a timer on it too
Dearsmike@reddit
Leaving things on a stove to cook is a very normal way of cooking.
MagCatRed@reddit
Sure just don't walk away from it. That's kinda the main argument hear.
zombawombacomba@reddit
Brain is all fucked up from constant short dopamine hits. Cooking is too boring.
Emerald_Digger@reddit
I am far to paranoid for that
Schnibb420@reddit
Do you expect me to stand there watching my gulasch simmer for 4 hours?
His sausages popped, besides that nothing bad happened, still perfectly fine to eat!
TeaTimeAtThree@reddit
When I worked at an apartment complex, we had a tenant one time that almost caught his building on fire by leaving potatoes (without water) in a pot on the stove and then left to get a pizza. The maintenance man and I both happened to notice the smoke and ran in to make sure he wasn't unconscious inside. He got home as we finished dealing with the potatoes, and I chewed him out over it. Not even a week later, he did it again. (He was always pulling stupid crap like this, though.) He was so surprised when we didn't renew his lease.
Sumoki_Kuma@reddit
My mom has almost set the house on fire with me in it twice because of this. Both oil fires. They did set alight, I just noticed before I died of smoke inhalation 🙃
VioletCombustion@reddit
I had an old roommate who decided to make mac & cheese for breakfast, had the noodles boiling, finished getting ready & left for work. We discovered it when the fire alarm went off. The noodles were a charred mess in the bottom of the pot.
Buttercup4869@reddit
Normally, you boil the water, shut off the stove and put them in.
This incident is puzzling
Nielsly@reddit
Maybe this differs per country, here instructions are usually heat up the water with sausages inside for x minutes, do not let it boil
Fit_Stable3081@reddit
Very normal for stews and the like
SmileParticular9396@reddit
No shit.. when I’m boiling anything I set a timer on my phone bc I WILL forget about it the second I walk away.
Any-Eye6299@reddit
Idk, walking away from a huge pot of stew or broth that's simmering so slowly that it would probably take a week to fully evaporate, on an electric stove that doesn't actually use fire, seems to me like a pretty sane thing to do.
tofutears@reddit
I simmer my homemade chicken broth overnight while I’m sleeping 😅 with the flame barely even showing tho
dirtybo0ts@reddit
I at least set at least two timers when I leave something simmering.
Wobblepaws@reddit
i usually set a timer for eggs or w/e, but I've accidentally swiped it off before, it happens...
FishingLittle3900@reddit
However I did remember and rushed inside to extinguish some flames a d clear the place of smoke so thick u couldn't see shit
ackshee@reddit
Brother, have you never simmered a soup? I regularly walk away from my stove for 30+ minutes at a time. You have a smoke alarm, if something goes wrong you'll get a warning. Just make sure there aren't any towels or anything flammable near the stove, and make sure whatever you're cooking has plenty of liquid so it doesn't run dry and start to burn.
MagCatRed@reddit
Sure but I check on it every 15-20 minutes with a timer stir, then go about my day. It takes 30 seconds. The smoke alarm should never come into play with normal cooking.
ackshee@reddit
You're right, the smoke alarm should never come into play, that's not how I meant that to come off. My point is, walking away from the stove is not risking a house fire. If something starts to burn, the alarm goes off, and you run over and fix it.
Ok_Mousse4534@reddit
“Oh but the weather!”..yeah but..the stove?
