Car boot, are toy repairs ok?
Posted by Angelwings17@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 91 comments
I do car boots and mostly buy/am given soft toys /toys that have been sent to charity shops that are ripped or broken - my local charity shop knows that I fix them and normally gives me a bag full that they can't sell, but I make sure to give a donation.
I also buy toys just to sell on at car boots.
I also run a small teddy bear hospital, most people can't tell where the toy was ripped. There's nothing like seeing a child walk away happily with a toy that will have plenty of playtime left.
These toys are cleaned, washed and sorted before I take them to a car boot, but I have had a problem with people telling me that I shouldn't be selling them, I shouldn't be repairing them.
This happened while I was buying the toys at the charity shop and the workers were asking how my toy repairs/car boots were doing.
A large woman overheard the conversation and butted in saying that the broken toys should just be thrown away, not mended and sold, then asked what sick pleasure I get from doing it.
I just told her that it had nothing to do with her and that it's just something that I like to do.
She just huffed and called me a Pedo.
The charity staff barred her from the shop, turns out that she's stolen/done things like this before.
But it made me wonder if people really think like this, I just like mending toys and selling them at car boots, most of which I give away.
You honestly can't tell that the toy/plush was broken.
I just don't understand people like that.
Accomplished_Arm_298@reddit
The only issue I can think of is if you repaired a toy in a way that made the toy unsafe (added a choking hazard, used toxic paint, etc), particularly if it wasn't clear that the CE tag no longer applied.
voluotuousaardvark@reddit
You've stolen some of my fun!
I like buying toys that don't work and taking them apart with my son.
9/10 its water damage and we give up but every now and then we bring one back to life.
Screw that miserable sod. You're doing a good thing. Keep it up.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
đ it's a great hobby đ
AndrewHinds67@reddit
Why the hell would mending toys make you a pedo? That's utterly ridiculous. Ignore her and her ignorance and do what makes you and children happy.
craftyorca135@reddit
It sounds like a nice thing to do, and you're preventing landfill. Like the toy hospital and the repair shop, even that programme with Sarah (Can't remember what it's called.
QuantitySharp2662@reddit
I love this story đ when I saw the words "large woman" I was like oh yes ! The meat hath arrived !
I volunteered and if I heard about you I'd make sure we kept all the ugly bears and toys that we couldn't sell so you could utilize them.
Have you thought about adding a little tag to the soft toys, letting the new owners know they've spent time at the Toy Hospital or something? Dr FixToy ?
Do you offer to fix other people's toys for a fee at your toy hospital or is that the term for mending them lol because you could genuinely think about setting up a little toy hospital/mending service. Some people have a deep adoration for them and finding someone that can properly clean a cherished bear could be worth a couple shillings lol
Commercial-Bat-4534@reddit
Absolutely nobody thinks like that, that's why it was the last straw to bar her.
I doubt that would have happened if she had a normal reaction like "wow that's interesting, how did you get into that?" Or "it must be nice seeing the joy the kids get from your repairs" like how everyone else in the entire world would respond to overhearing that conversation
RobertTheSpruce@reddit
Is that not proof enough that this person is a prick that shouldn't be listened to?
Entire-Emotion-819@reddit
Nothing wrong with mending and selling, if it prolongs the usefulness and fun of an object rather than having it going to landfill than I'm all for it, upcycling is always a win.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I adore up cycling đ
Wise-Divide7679@reddit
We live within such a throw away culture currently, its refreshing to hear from someone like yourself that is repairing these items.
Entire-Emotion-819@reddit
Tbf, manufacturers these days don't make it easy for consumers to repair their own stuff, I guess electronics are the worst offenders but laws and pushback from consumers does seem to be making changes for some consumer repairability coming back, I miss tinkering.
Entire-Emotion-819@reddit
I've been doing it since I was a kid in single digits, my grandad owned an auction house so he got me into the whole "one man's junk, another man's treasure" thing, and I've been like that ever since.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
That's lovely.
Doughtnutz@reddit
Ignore the lunatic, i think it's great that you're recycling stuff and giving the toys a new home. I've watched Toy Story, I know the toys appreciate it too.
Eggtastico@reddit
She sounds jealous. Keep on doing what you are doing.
B-owie@reddit
Some of my all time fave childhood toys were broken car boot finds me and my Mum bought, took home and repaired.
She would have absolutely loved hearing about your stall â¤ď¸ thankyou for reminding me
Nolascana@reddit
The repairs are to a good standard, there's absolutely zero issue.
Seam pops are easier to repair than, say, entire limbs being obliterated or other tears... but these days people just, dont care to learn how to sew. Like, at all.
Toys at car boots aren't always cleaned. Theyre just bagged and relocated from box to box yaknow?
Youre already making sure the previously unsellable toys have chances at new life.
Youre funding your efforts. People forget, you have stall fees, transport costs, storage concerns, material costs etc, atop all that, your labour.
People are just pissy they didnt come up with it and put the effort in themselves.
PaleozoicQueen@reddit
You sound like a lovely person and she was just a sour, jealous old witch.
You keep doing you. I think the fact that you repair toys is awesome, it gives them another life and keeps some plastic/teddies out of landfill. More people should be like you doing something kind like this!
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Thankyou for your kindness, I do it to give toys new life and not end up in landfills, plus to make children happy.
PaleozoicQueen@reddit
Do you have a website, an Instagram or something?
Have you ever thought of running an account posting the toys that you have fixed before and after? It would be cool to see, I would follow you!
Have a good day đ
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I have thought about it, I think I will do so once I pick up some more items to fix, I will let you know.
PaleozoicQueen@reddit
Please do! If i can help with anything you can ask me as well.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Will do.
dogtrousers@reddit
Fyi there is a Facebook group of teddy bear restorers that has a lot of very knowledgeable people on it. It's called Teddy Bear Restoration Group.
RefrigeratorSalt6869@reddit
You are doing a great thing and it's also recycling old toys. Take no notice. I do similar with old fashion dolls, its lovely seeing them get a new lease of life for someone else to enjoy.
DevilsAdvocate1662@reddit
If 2nd hand stuff wasn't resold, eBay would not exist.
I've also personally bought a few Jellycat plushies off eBay that have been used.
Honestly, if a kid loves a plushie, and it gets repaired rather than thrown away, that's a great thing
New_Line4049@reddit
Most people dont think like that no. She's just a bad word I wont say on a question about kids toys.
forestboy1@reddit
I donât think thereâs any issue with selling repaired toys just make sure you inform the person buying them.
thehoneybadger1223@reddit
She sounds like an arrogant wasteful twit tbh. You ate saving those toys from going to landfill, you're recycling. She's just a crayon-eating crazy lady.
Bastrato@reddit
Fuck that chunky bitch. You sound like a saint.
CherryHavoc@reddit
These people would prefer that these things go to landfill than be given a new lease of life?
Amonette2012@reddit
What a nutcase! I bet she was even happy at the end of the Velveteen Rabbit!
Junkoftheheartss@reddit
A toy fixed and kept out of landfill not only makes toys more accessible but is great for the environment. Not sure how thatâs something to shit on, she sounds like she needs to be told to fuck off a few more times lol. Keep being you x
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Thankyou, I'm not stopping my toy hospital anytime soon, Im just picking things up from charity shops and fixing them. I have thought of reaching out and advertising my toy hospital, but I'm a bit too nervous for that
AutomaticInitiative@reddit
I think there are lots of parents who would welcome such a service! "Oh Ted is a little unwell he has to go to the hospital!" and he returns clean and with his falling off ear sewn back on for a few quid. Brilliant.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
There's a lot to plan, but I am planning to do a teddy bear hospital.
NoodleDoodlesocks@reddit
Car boot sales are literally for old, second hand stuff that isn't always going to be there. A lot of my toys growing up were from car boot sales and weren't always complete or in mint condition.
The woman is just a miserable thieving bitch.
memojo1979@reddit
Chances are that a toy repaired by you is in better condition that any other unrepaired toy (especially if any damage / wear can't be seen yet) sold at the same car boot sales. Buying used items comes with the understanding that they won't be in a new / unused condition, so giving something repaired already is a bonus!
As long as the repairs are safe for kids, then to me that sounds like a good thing rather than a bad thing. And, of course, we're in a throw-away world at the moment, where things are often cheaper to replace rather than repair, so you're saving extra landfill.
If you want to remove all doubt, you could have a sign at your stall that not only advertises your toy hospital (if you get customers from it, then you can fund more repair mayerials and stock) but also tells potential buyers that all pre-used items on that end of the table (near the sign) have been through a strict safety check, cleaning and repair process. Then potential buyers have been informed and can decide for themselves whether they agree with you or not.
Yuji_Ide_Best@reddit
Just a sick minded individual is all. Sounds like the charity shop is all too familiar with it.
If anything im MORE cautious of people going around calling others pedos simply for interacting with a child. Theres no reason to make it weird unless they themselves think along those lines in the first place. For me you got to be pretty sick in the head for you to immediately jump to that kind of conclusion.
NugzYKnot@reddit
Yeah I agree with this completely. Some people manage to twist things in such a waay that I think they are the ones that have those thoughts.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I was shocked to be called it, so just because I fix and sell toys makes me a Pedo? Some people need help.
Imtryingforheckssake@reddit
Personally I wouldn't mend toys labled as suitable for under 36 months due to health and safety concerns. But other than that so long as you're good at mending and if you do any restuffing it's with toy standard polyfill I think you've covered your bases
spinningdice@reddit
If you were selling them in a shop you might have some legal issues, I don't know I'm not a lawyer but on a car-boot? Nah.
Maybe she's seen too many police shows and thinks you're putting camera's or drugs or something in them?
gxb20@reddit
Nah youâre doing something great (unless you are a pedo ig) and sheâs mad
N4t3ski@reddit
Reduce, reuse, repair, recycle.
Ignore that woman. People will look at an item and determine if it meets their standards or not.
You could mention that such items are refurbished, preloved, reconditioned, whatever, just to be upfront about it, (especially for collector items or electronics) but im not sure youre obliged to do so at a car boot sale.
Jesisawesome@reddit
wtf what a weirdo.
I think it is a great thing to do in a very wasteful world (especially toys which are plastic intensive).
Never understand why people would wish to deny joy.
Great work on the teddy bear hospital as well, might need you if my daughter's bear ever gets beyond the point of repair.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I am planning to do a toy hospital request on Facebook and YouTube.
Jesisawesome@reddit
Oh well lmk when you do
Cult-Film-Fan-999@reddit
She's total headcase, give her no more thought and keep doing what you're doing!
Gornal-Annie6133@reddit
What a smashing idea! You should do a YT channel showing the toys journey, from broken to reusable, rather like the Repair Shop.
There have been times when I couldâve used your services when my kids teddies took a tumble.
Ignore Mrs Nosey Parker, sheâs irrelevant. Good luck and thank you on behalf of all the renovated toys!
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I am planning a Facebook/YouTube toy hospital.
JennyW93@reddit
You have to be a very specific type of nut to manage to get banned from a charity shop, so I donât think youâre the weird one in this scenario
asymmetricears@reddit
The charity gets some money, toys don't go to landfill, the kids get a new (to them) toy, you make a small amount of money.
I can't see anyone losing from this situation.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Exactly, that's why I love it.
YouCantGiveBabyBooze@reddit
You're doing a really lovely thing - please ignore her.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I will âşď¸
000000564@reddit
What a wasteful attitude. Strange woman.
getoutmywayatonce@reddit
Upvoted for the wholly unnecessary description of âa large womanâ
Laughed to my chubby self about that.
Keep doing what youâre doing. Itâs good to minimise our culture of waste, and it doesnât make you a pedo no matter how much anyone huffs about it lol
Mr_Bumcrest@reddit
No, that's lunacy. Keep up what you're doing.
BiscuitCrumbsInBed@reddit
Please try to forget her. You sound like you are doing a wonderful thing; repairing this items so they can be loved again. We are so quick to throw things away.
She sounds like a horrible, twisted person and ive no idea what drove her to say such a horrible thing to you.
MrCowabs@reddit
As long as youâre not actually a paedo then itâs fine
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
Calling someone a paedo as an insult without any knowledge of the person should be a hate crime punishable by law.
RhubarbDiva@reddit
A few years ago my friend's daughter had a side gig of buying quality designer or named clothing in charity shops and selling it on. Lots of people do it now so it's not a way to make money these days.
I'm quite a good sewist so I took a damaged designer dress and by the time I had repaired it you couldn't tell it had ever been damaged.
I sold it on a prom dress website for a good profit. I paid a low price, put in several hours of skilled work, and then sold it for a lot less than it was in the shops. I even considered making a little side gig from that and if I did, does that make me weird?
My son bought a joblot of non-working electric kids' scooters and by cannibalising one he got the other 9 working and sold them on. The parents were delighted to be able to get a sought-after gift for Christmas at a reasonable price. Please don't tell me he is a paedo.
OP, fixing things is, and has always been, the normal thing to do.
Most people don't throw something away because it needs work. We get it fixed or fix it ourselves.
Keep up the good work!
Common_Man7669@reddit
What a lovely thing you're doing with the teddy bear hospital. You sound like a kind person and I wish there were more like you (from both a kindness and anti-waste point of view). Keep up the good work, mate đÂ
Nevernonethewiser@reddit
A woman browsing in a charity shop told you things should be thrown away instead of mended and sold?
In a charity shop?
And called you a pedophile for fixing toys?
Having a hard time believing any of this.
Common_Man7669@reddit
I work in a public facing NHS role (I only mention this to evidence that I meet multiple new people every day) and sadly I completely believe it, particularly the paedophile comment. Its pretty shocking how often that word is thrown about, tbh.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I have no reason to lie about this, I'm just asking for people's options.
Local_Beautiful3303@reddit
She sounds like an absolute treasure ...... (sarcasm).
Absolutely repair and sell or give away toys, you enjoy it and also helps reduce things going to landfill. You never know you might stumble across a real treasure and pull off an Only Fools and Horses.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I love doing it (I mostly give toys away anyways) I I can fix something, I pick it up. The problem with the world today is the fact that 80% of items that could be mended are put into landfill.
If I had the confidence to, I would branch out and advertise my toy hospital.
Local_Beautiful3303@reddit
I think its a great thing that you do, Im bing on recycling/repairing/re-purposing, and I definitely think you should advertise your toy hospital. You could set up a fb or tiktok page and post reels of repairs, before/after post.
Cold_Table8497@reddit
What sick pleasure does she get from stealing from a charity shop?
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
It sadly happens, she was caught before and held in the shop by the manager, waiting for the guards to arrive. But because they themselves didn't see her shoplifting (video footage was more than proof that she did) she was let go. I only know this as I'm good friends with the manager.
ggghhhhggjyrrv@reddit
What a weirdo. As long as you're not passing them off as new then all good. You're doing a good thing
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Thanks
WirelessCrumpets@reddit
What a response from her đ really it sounds like you're doing a nice thing
CoffeeIgnoramus@reddit
I think if people know they are repaired toys, then who gives a toss.
You are giving them a new lease of life.
That woman would rather fill landfills than have a child have a cuddly toy.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I never sell the toys at retail prices, just a quid or two.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Exactly! To hear her talk you would think that I was selling worn down toys.
SnooDonuts6494@reddit
Nah, just her.
DeapVally@reddit
Fixing things is a perfectly normal hobby. Fixing toys doesn't make you a pedo like restoring railwayana doesn't make me a train spotter.
No-Snow-9605@reddit
The woman concerned sounds like a lonely spinster who has had little, if any, enjoyment from life.
I think it is fabulous what you do with your toy repairs.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Thankyou, it's nice to hear some praise.
Master-Tank6719@reddit
Bloody hell she has never heard of a thing called capitalism. What your doing is fine and to me, just sounds like a side hustle and fair play. If you get enjoyment and money , that's even better!
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
Exactly! I'm just happy to see toys find a new home.
dieselsuckingmemes@reddit
Donât worry about the opinion of a woman who shoplifts from charity shops, and certainly donât try to understand her thinking. You wouldnât go to someone like that for advice, so ignore them.
funusernam3@reddit
I can't imagine anyone else thinks like this woman; ignore.
Angelwings17@reddit (OP)
I know,I just don't understand people like that.
NoFewSatan@reddit
That's insane!
OldLondon@reddit
No / sheâs a crazy person. Youâre doing a good job - I mean has she never seen Toy Story??
