2005 toyota highlander limited, maintenance required?

hey all,
my toyota gave me a “maintenance required” light this morning. now i know this light isn’t a super big issue, it just means its needs routine maintenance. the problem is i don’t know what it needs, it could be anything from like, the oil to the air filter. the guy i bought it from gave me no info, and unless im bad at looking, i can’t find anything in the paperwork either. the only thing i DO know is the oil change is due in a few thousand miles. my question is, can i plug one of those scanners into my car, and will it tell me exactly what needs maintenance? thanks, i dont know a whole ton about cars.

You can take it to any auto parts store and have the code read. However there is no guarantee that it will tell you much. It could just be a scheduled reminder which is general, or a failure in a system that will then need troubleshooting. They can be specific or very general. Your best resolution is to have a qualified mechanic look at it.

There is a maintenance schedule in your owners manual. Follow it. And change your brake fluid.
